This team had a lot in common with the 1984 Husker squad with regards to turnovers and an awesome defense. They both fell short by one game, and the ultimate "what could've been..."
The Monday after the 2000 Fiesta Bowl I was sitting in Spanish I talking to a friend about the game. To refresh your memory, Nebraska had beaten Tennessee 31-21, but they had rushed for 321 yards in the process and made Tennessee look incredibly weak. As we were alternating between "Como esta usted?" and "Damn, Nebraska abused the hell out of Tennessee.", there was a knock at the door and none other than Phil Fulmer poked his head in the class asking to speak with one of my teammates he was recruiting. A few students surrounded the man as he showed off his 1998 national championship ring. I watched from the rear of the classroom as it glistened in the light and provoked wonder from the awestruck students. That's when Brian spoke up. Brian was like a high school Stephen A. Smith. Once he saw everyone fawning all over Fulmer, he looked up, made eye contact with the coach and yelled from the far corner of the classroom, "Yeah, well what the Hell happened last night, n****?!!!!!!" Fulmer looked like a deer in headlights as the eerie silence in the classroom eventually turned into nervous laughter.
This is one of my all-time favorite games to watch because of those drives. Power football at its finest. The Huskers dominated the line of scrimmage completely. Tennessee could do nothing about it but hope Nebraska made a mistake.
oh man...the Good old days. I was living in LA in 2001 and went to the Rose Bowl. Sat by 2 Old Birds in full Hurricane Duck Garb, man they were funny. by the end of 3rd Quarter and Miami was Coasting, we laughed it up with those gals & me and my Husker Buddies were screaming, We're # 2, We're #2.
The 1999 Cornhuskers were one of Nebraska's best teams ever. Had they not stubbed their toe in a close game against Texas earlier in the season (a loss that they avenged in dominant fashion in the Big XII Championship game), they would have gone on to win yet another national championship that year.

I love Osbourne's Nebraska; "I-Bone" some call it for running some wishbone-esque Option out of the I Formation. I just like watching the Close Games; there's some nice ones in the 80's; and mid 90's dominance is mostly blowouts; but I've seen BOTH Epic Games with Miami (go for 2!) probably 3x in the past 5 years as I started diving into College Football and its history Year round. THANKS TH-cam Uploaders!! I wish I was born sooner so I'd have all this at a younger age. Adult Responsibilities get in the way of watching old and new Football Year round.

This was the last time the Vols were in a major bowl game (NY6/BCS). Technically they made the Peach Bowl and Cotton Bowl in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004, but those weren't BCS bowls back then, and weren't reintroduced as NY6 until the playoff format was implemented in 2014.
If they could have just held onto the ball they could have been champions. Fumbled 49 times that season, losing 25 of them if I recall correctly. Dan Alexander looked like Scooby-Doo on roller-skates and Correll Buckhalter also had a case of the yips. Fumbling was contagious. The more they worked on it, talked about it, and thought about it, the more they fumbled. It's not like they had an empty roster for running backs: Dahrran Diedrick, DeAngelo Evans (early in the season, at least), Josh Davis, DeAntae Grixby, etc.
Can any Nebraska fan tell me why Frank Solich was fired? Yes, I know that he had the 7-7 season in 2002. However, Solich had the fantastic Big 12 Champion in 1999, 12-1, avenging their only loss to Texas in the conference championship game. He was 10-2 in 2000, 11-2 and played for the BCS Championship in 2001, and 9-3 in 2003 before being fired. Nebraska has been mediocre since.
I heard rumors that Frank Solich was having affairs with young women and otherwise living a "non-Christian" life that was seen as an embarrassment to the university and importantly to Tom Osborne. This was what I heard was the "inside" story of Solich's downfall. Can anyone else familiar with the situation comment if you heard the same?

GtFo Honestly it's not even a good comparison. Osborne did what he did with mostly 3 and 4 star players. The strength and conditioning was pro level. Alabama gets literally half of the top 250 players every year who are all trying to get to the NFL. Different era bruh.

Stuff like that probably happens in a lot of games, but for some reason the audio setup was so bad it was very clearly heard on every play. The network probably put a mic on him to capture game noises, not realizing he was so chatty.

They should have made the adjustment when Weinke, Vick showed that throwing the ball is becoming the first choice in an offense. Not run 50 times/game and throw only 12 times.

The coldest weather game of the year for Nebraska was this game in Arizona. I had 50 yard line seats and froze my ass off.
