I miss this era. Just in general, I miss the time when Preach was making videos like this. We were all enjoying WoW, life was simpler. This came up in my feed again and put me straight in my feelings. Love you Preach, thanks for all the content over the years pal.

I stopped playing late WoD, and can't bring myself to play ever again (although I did play WoTLK/Cata classic, some MoP private servers, etc). I don't know what I miss more, the state of the game or my state of mind, or even my life circumstances... But my soul aches for what used to be, and will never happen again... We should be greateful that it happened though, so thanks Preach for all the joy you brought to my life.

+Tholyn underachiever FTW (Its an addon that fakes achievements for those who haven't heard of it). I used it a couple of times back in the day to get some WOTLK raids before i found a decent and fair raiding guild. Good times :) . The scumbags also never took into account the people who did their homework on boss fights by watching either tankspot or youtube videos.

BACK IN THE HAYDAY you actually had to invite people and judge their abilities and kick them if they proved themselves incompetent.

yes, but everyone could see it with the addon which led to things like players use pvp gear in raids or players using gear that is not good for their class like paladins with haste rating just to get picked.
wwwpwndcom But ilvls now are VARY reasonable its just like he said in the video back in gearscore days people wouldn't even respond to you if your gearscore wasn't above the items in the actual raid and it was retarded, I remember one time i got rejected from the raid because i had one crit gem on my hunter by having that ONE gem he told me I didn't know how to play a hunter and my toon got blacklisted from the guild.
Sinbadman Actually the same exact problem exists. On my server (Illidan) you need 550 ilvl to join a flex pug and RF only drops 528. This is obviously a giant flaw, because in order to get 550 you would need to do flex but you cant get invited to flex because you are in 528 RF gear. Naturally, having a raiding guild gets you around that (somewhat, a lot of guilds actually require ilvl to raid with).
ilvl to day IS the EXACT SAME THING AS GEAR SCORE!! lol. the only difference is that the player base aren't making the same mistakes they were when we had gear score. Same thing, just the way we as a player base treat it is different.

Rogue ninja looted the Strath mount in vanilla when I rolled a 99 and he rolled a 20. I'm still salty about that in 2022. It lives rent free in my head, I haven't seen that mount again since.
I ran a DKP guild. No one ever quit because of how we handled DKP. And yes there were people like me and my officers who had tens of thousands of DKP, and yet new members still had a fighting chance. (2000 DKP signing bonus) New members could also build DKP easily because we farmed several raids specifically for the guild bank or to gear low geared new folks. I also awarded DKP for bank donations, showing up to guild meetings and lastly answering call outs whether for guild mates or just other horde to stop alliance from ganking someone. (That's part of how built our rep was being willing to show up and help anyone being griefed, it was a pvp server.) We were pve raiders mostly. That's what we loved to do, 25+ raids. Best way to have the people and others in reserve just in case, was to be fair. And progression did not suffer. We were either the 2nd or 3rd horde guild on our server to get 25 man malygos. (I quit playing about half way through wrath) And usually we were in the top 3 guilds overall on our server. Though we did drop in progression a couple of times. My point is DKP can be fair. It should reward long time members and raiders who show, on time, for every raid. But it shouldn't preclude your new guildies from being able to gear up and raid with you.
many people had a great DKP system my guild also did, I remember it very fondly. Unfortunately I say those objecting to gear score and DKP systems were among the have nots in WoW history, always having a spot in a good raid afforded a lot of happiness
i fucking hated Gearscore I remember back in the day I used to play all the time did all I could to make sure i was playing my Lock at the best I could play him. Gearing up with the best gear I can without raiding getting all the best enchants on my gear but no matter what I did no matter how good my DPS was or how good I played "oh ur GS is'nt blah blah blah bullshit no you cant raid with us" God I fucking hated it. Then one day I magically got into a raid because some guy left the raid, so I got invited somehow. I got there they look at my gearscore and say "hell his GS is way lower then the last guy theres no way were gunna down this boss" and guess what we wiped once then i got the mechanics down and second pull we downed him with me almost toping the DPS charts and I had no raid gear. Guys in the raid still hated me because they were proved wrong and didnt give me the loot that i won roll on. Fucking scum bags.
That was me when I came back to Cata, after quitting during TBC. However, I never managed to get into a raid at all. Eventually just quit again. I'm not sure how people expected me to get raid gear when literally nobody would accept me TO raid. Even after I practically solo'd Venoxis (from maybe 70%) when the rest of my party wiped :^)
One time a guy on my server decided to start a ICC25 raid, but rather then ask for a gear score requirement he simply wanted people with some experience. Well several people joined and as expected some had some shitty gear lol. But we got really far, almost to Lich King but are tanks had to log off so the raid ended. But that showed me that the gear score system was really shitty at the time. I'm glad its gone.
It's not gone. Blizzard just implemented their own. After GS it was "link your achieve" but at least that was slightly more appropriate as it showed the player had experience. Most players realized however that GS was bullshit, especially when there was some gear like trinkets that were better than others with a higher GS.
A few years back I was doing random dungeons and kept getting teamed up with a particular scumbag (forget the name but it was Shark something). The reason why is because when loot dropped he NEEDED on EVERYTHING no matter if he could wear it or not. I think he was just ignorant of the looting rules cause even when they were explained to him, & you better believe they were very quickly, he still kept doing it anyway. He said, "well, I can sell it for the money-I NEED the money." It's like he thought NEED meant whatever you wanted it to. Like his definition of NEED didn't just have to mean if you could wear it & it upgraded your current gear. To him EVERYTHING was NEEDED cause he needed money! I'have no idea where he is today but I bet he's still doing the same thing.
James Shelnutt I still run into players like this while leveling alts but now if you need roll on a green gear item it soulbinds to you and I'm glad blizzard done that it really puts a limit to the benefits of stealing loot instead of sharing rolls.

I know this is irrelevant and your fans will probably attack me for saying this, but I feel like the more scumbag move in any video game are raid leaders in lotro. Lotro (which people sometimes refer to as a mild version of wow, since there are a lot of similarities between the two games). This has something to do with your "minimum gear point requirement" point. In lotro, especially on the server I am on, no one will let you go on any raid unless you have good gear. The only way to get good gear is to either be of the craft which crafts your type of gear (tailor for low and mid, metalsmith for heavy), be maxed at top tier guild crafting (which is different than normal crafting) and wait 6 day intervals between each piece of gear. Not to mention, the recipes for these pieces of gear requires a special gem that could only be acquired through the top raids. No one wanted to raid with you if you didn't have good gear, but you could only get good gear by raiding. It was a lose-lose situation for anyone who wasn't a kin leader who couldn't force his kinmembers to take him on raids. This was particularly frustrating for me because I am a younger player than most people in my social circle. Albeit, some are barely a year older than me, I am still one of the youngest. Which means, I am still in school. These scumbags only run raids during school/work days and give kinmembers the weekend off to recover. No chance for younger players, no chance for improvement.
I forgot to mention that only ONE (or, if you're lucky, two) gem drops in every raid. Each different type of gear (helmet, shoulders, tunic, pants, gloves, cloak, and boots) required a DIFFERENT gem. ONE person in the entire 12 person raid would get a jewel. There was no rhyme or reason, just whoever the game decided to give it to. You could also get duplicate gems which was worst than the worst. Back when level 75 was the cap (it's now 100), and Draigoch was the shit, you needed 3 dragonscale gems to make a cloak, and then you needed a clasp to complete the recipe. This clasp only appeared once per raid and if you ran with the same group more than once in a row (which was hard to do since everyone would throw a fit and leave), it would seem like it was always the same guy who got it. This guy had quite a few alts with the claps before our kin-leader even got one.

Difference is that GS was just regarding gear, not actual progress or skill. Raider IO just shows what you've done it actually counteracts the whole ilvl bullshit that we have now.
Funny enough with that is that original wow didnt have this till pre cata and lasted only till I think mid to late M.O.P. which thank fucking god for that oh you want to go do 55 dungeon oh you cant well I guess you can rando that and have a chance but wait it gets better. After mists came out randos only give you within your gear range so if you get a dick in the group everyone else gets left behind so literally the only way you can progress is if your somehow leader and the lowest gear lvl in the group and always need on the stuff to progress ya brilliant thinking blizzard oh and B.O.A. gear doesn't work in dungeon ques so in order to use it you que in jump into your boa then go and they later patched that so you cant what a waste

It's so sad about 25 man raiding guilds...my guild is one of the last true few 25 man raiding guilds on our server. Also loot councils are the absolute worst shit I've ever had to deal with in the game. Also you forgot to mention people that excessively gear their alts in the raid and take loot away from other people's mains.
My guild had DKP but we had a clear systelm: rank Trail: Cannot bid for any item, except if the item isnt going to be disenchanted, Alts-above trails but still cant bid if any main wants it ( BUT if the alt is specificly requested by the raid leader he gains the statute of a normal member, because the player was forced to play with his alt), and up above are the normal Veteran-Marshal-Officer which get the main priority to get loot.
VKGchaos DKP sucked ass. Always did. It was never fair to good players that had real life responsibilities, like a job, and could only show up two or three times a week compared to the kid that could be there every night especially during summer.

Alexander Atanasov This is the type of system that works best. DKP, loot councils, both can go fuck themselves. Your core 10 man group should be a group of 10 friends, not 10 enemies trying to steal loot from each other. A little courtesy can go a long way. My guild has been together since wrath and we have been gearing just fine by allowing the GM to be Master Looter and list items and allow them to be rolled on.
If anything right was done in retail it was the badge gear and personalized loot. You got a roll in for clearing the raid. I admit at one instance I did like the competitive loot rolling thing but I kind of hated the backstabbing loot council shit. People that manipulated others got the best gear of course because of scumbaggery.

Gearscore was THE WORST thing to ever get into WoW and got reformed into ilvl. Gearscore in short : Dungeon needs 200 GS, Idiot in LFG wants you to have 250 wich is raid score. Makes no sense!!
That said, item level and achievs are here and right now truly it’s not too bad. There’s gonna be groups that require stupid high ilvl+achiev, and they’re gonna deny you if you don’t have either. And that’s fine. Because they intend to smash it. There’s also always groups that require the minimum, where you can go if you haven’t done any content yet. And if you want to guarantee yourself a raid spot, you can always find a guild!
I remember the horrors of the DKP system first hand. A Rant by an ex-WoW player As he discribes it perfectly, my situation was a bit worse..... As a paladin you had to be a healer in order to raid, however because i was questing i was dps specced since holy talent-paladins were crap for questing and only good for healing in instances or raids.... Because of that i missed the first few raids my guild had and make me loze the DKP points with it. Eventually when we managed to get some loot the paladin who had more DKP got the loot. At first i was ok with it untill i saw the full, extended effects which can be named as "PROGRESSION" Yes! the word that f**ked my life was the meaning to "progress" in the raid instances meaning the better geared would always get picked first... That meant for me, even DURING a raid, a higher level pally could come online an hour after the raid started JUST before we were going to attack a boss and kick me out to be replaced with him.... The following then happened: I got DKP for attending the raid. The NEW paladin got DKP for attending AND killing the boss AND spend it on loot drops which still resulted at a higher increase ( because of multiple boss-kills ) that he'd still have more DKP then me..... Basicly meaning ANY paladin loot that dropped didn't even go to me but to every other paladin ( we had 4 ) meaning no matter how many times i DID get to raid i never got loot or DKP high enough to compete. Then they introduced the bidding system ( bidding DKP with a minimum amount, but no maximum ) meaning the very little loot i DID get would either cost me nearly all my DKP to aquire it ( because otherwise it would get disenchanted ) or was simply outbid by any of the regular paladins. And even when i was the only paladin still needing the paladin only item i still had to pay the minimum DKP which often meant spending all my DKP earning of an ENTIRE MONTH just to get 1 item. They wouldn't just give it free, it was either pay up with your DKP or it gets disenchanted.... This resulted in me eventually quitting the guild because i felt like they were treating me like a 3rd rank guildmember beeing ignored by these people claiming to be your friendly guildmembers but giving crap about your disire to raid or be a part of that team... Beeing force to raid 5-man instances almost endlessly i discovered a "members only" chat section ( During the burning Crusade ) that was basicly a high-end guild looking for raid channel for recruiting people to do Pug's ( pick up groups containin random people from diffrent guilds ) to raid high end instances like The world tree and Black temple. Even though i told them i was low-geared they accepted me and gave me a better time then the guild i was in. It was there in this channel that wasn't even a guild but a random assortment of other people in high-end guilds with the same kind of problems that i actually felt like a member and was eventually a regular in the raiding group(s). Not to brag but during the "warchief Thrall" section of the world tree i was no1 in healing* and no.6 in DPS on the boss fight as a DPS-paladin. *This was all due to a game mechanic called the judgement of light which gave every Physical melee or ranged attack heal that person. Combine this small amount x40 players and you get my drift.... If that wasn't enough you could do the same but give back mana instead meaning i was a welcome sight as both a dps and a secondary healer, giving a steady amount to healing to every player around. If it wasn't for Blizzard making the DPS-spec for the paladin a reasonable option and this chat channel, i probably would have quit WoW because of this opressive system.

I like GDKP. You buy the items with gold, give the gold to the lootmaster, at the end of the raid, all gold spend is shared evenly between all raiders. If you don't get gear, least you get money. Supports the entire guild.

Kind of a cruel tradeoff. People would gear up, but I'd be in hysterical laughter at their panicky deaths the entire time.
gearscore ruined wotlk for me. i had stopped playing and joined right before icc i think so i had very little time to gear up along the others. so i was very much behind. guess what. i never raided icc.
I wasn't even level 80 when ICC opened, and it was easy for me :b I just started the groups myself in the beginning. In the first few weeks I only got like 2-4 bosses down, but the extra emblems and occasional loot, made it easy for me to join a guild and quickly start heroic raiding :b But i guess it differs from server to server. and another tip is to just link an uncompleted achiev, this was especially useful in 25-man runs, as the leader had to manage a lot, and often didn't bother to look at it.
As a warlock in those days it was easy for me to get into a group(mostly) Naxx was my first raid I'll never forget that T7.5 gear. I regret deleting him.

I realize it wasn't a game-wide thing, but by FAR the biggest scumbag move in WoW was when Serenity (might be wrong on that name) raided the in game funeral of a girl that had died. Even posted a video of it.
Yes I remember that but I didnt see it as a scumbag move they all respected the in game rules. Now had they raided the realife funeral that would have been a scumbag move. They could have done the funeral at a no pvp zone doing it in a pvp area is like asking for it tbh. Now on a diffrent note to answer the video scamming was one thing that should have been on the list.

i liked his complaint about DKP. Thankfully the guilds i was in never used DKP we used a loot roll rule. Everyone is entitled to one win through need roll until everyone of that loot class has gotten an upgrade then it resets. That means you roll need on stuff until you win a piece for your class specific needs then once you win you can't roll need until everyone else of the same grouping has gotten something.
Our guild used something like a need vs greed system for sharing our loot , usually the people that need specific items to improve get that thing , if no one needs it , it gets auctioned away into a stack of gold to fund our raids , basically everyone gets what they need and we never have to restock on potions cause we auction away useless junk. After a lot of our guild members left the game (due to life ) me and my ex guild leader joined a guild that uses DKP. We quit after the first raid even though we almost carried their asses. I hated the DKP system , I hate how guild members can't just give new guild members what they need and improve the guild overall in raiding. The selfishness of a man can often turn them into monsters.
We had a mix back in Cata that worked well. It was MS item first, and then it went to need v greed, but raid points detertmined who got it. So if both A and B needed it for MS, but A got gear last raid and spent his points, B spent his and got it ( unless someone was extremely generous and worked out a deal)
The fact that your salty ass quit after one raid is a perfect example of the strength of dkp it keeps randos from taking a bunch of loot and ghosting the next day.
Loot council worked really well for my guild. Everyone got loot. For items more than one class needed IE: rogues and warrior weps. Warriors would get it one week and then rogues the next. If it didn't drop the next week rogues kept priority until it dropped again. It really helps when your LC isn't corrupt and really has the betterment of the guild in mind. It also helps when your guild isn't full of loot whores and know their turn will come.
the worst thing about the gearscore addon was the twats who designed it, giving vendor loot of the same item level as loot from raids a lower score, so anyone who had more than a few badge pieces would always have a lower gearscore than people wearing the same level gear from only raids. then there was the sparkle pony debacle where it would seek out the pony in your mount tab and deduct gearscore if you had it.
Me and my friends struggled through and downed everything but the last boss of every dungeon at the beginning of Cata. Funny thing too is we were also doing Cho'Gall wrong, and got him to like 3% on our best attempt. We didn't learn of this situation until much later, and it made the whole situation funny when we realized that the struggles were because they completely fucked it up.
I absolutely despised DKP. I always ended up being in the negatives because I had to take the crap than no one wanted. And since I could never get the really good gear, they always wanted the people who already had the gear to do the raid... So I would sit outside, with my negative DKP, unable to earn new points to get the gear that no one wanted because the Idiots who thought this was a good idea wanted the best possible chance to get the one fucking item at the end of the raid that all the high end people were saving their DKP for. DKP Raiding is one of the contributing factors for me leaving WOW the first time. =^.,.^=
Not giving DKP to the benched players should be an obvious problem to any guild officer. If a person shows up at raid time, stays online the whole raid, and stays ready to swap in at a moment's notice, then they should get points to spend. Your problem sounds less like a problem with points themselves and more a problem with idiotic management. The twin goals of any loot distribution system should be to maximize the benefit to the raid and to reward the people who show up for progression. Letting a few players accumulate more points and denying points to others who show up just ensures that big upgrades don't go to the people who need them and the raid suffers.
'Gearscore' started before the addon was around - the addon just filled a request for a quick verify method. It actually started in Burning Crusade, I have screenshots at the end of BC where pug _Heroics_ were requiring T6 or equivalent gear. Only thing then is you had to invite them, wait for them to be summoned to, then inspect them to verify. Gearscore just made it easier to be like that - you could quickly verify via addon. I loved when it temporarily went to achievement link only, because (If people don't know) you can actually link any achievement in the game, and have it tagged with your name and a date like you actually earned the achievement and this fooled people for awhile to the point where group leaders literally had the armoury up in the background to verify gear/acheivements lol.
This still applies for todays wow sadly, me being a 'Mythic' raider, i joined a Sylvanas HC run, pulled when the timer hit 0, but the tank never went in, so i took 2 arrows to the face and died. 3 people instantly jumped on me spamming "lol 10/10 mythic raider, gj buddy" pretty much flaming me for the entire pull (Oh, neither of those people had any mythic kills) A rogue even took it to whispers, and told me i was mentally ill, i was a retard, i should off myself.. the list goes on. All of this, because i died as a mythic raider, on a HC boss.. you love to see it.
The first time I got my Kingslayer title was actually on a crap character that had just dinged recently with some heroic gear. Late night, went into general chat and start a alt ICC25 pug. Didn't ask for gearscore or anything. We went in there, with 2 wipes and on that night we cleared EVERYTHING up to LK. Gearscore/itemlevel never.... meant.... shit. Understanding of game mechanics, tactics and class was key.
DKP is the worst. While raiding as the off-tank during Hyjal, a cape dropped for the tanks. The other tank was way more geared than me. So, I bid for it. And what did he do? He bid against me. Why? To make it so I would have to spend even more DKP for this cape, and then wouldn't compete against him on loot he may wanted. Either I spend all my DKP on one item, or he gets it and vendors it. Fucked up.
there shouldn't have been any bidding in DKP. All the items had costs already laid out, whoever has the higher accumulated DKP from raiding and wants the item gets it and spends only the item price
So many different things in this video... just classic. Gearscore: Wow was this the most horrible thing that ever plagued the game. I remember I took a break from the game for about a month and then came back and suddenly no matter where I went everyone was asking you about your stupid gearscore as if that score automatically meant you could play. I remember specifically getting told I couldn't run in instances because of my score and various people dropping me to bring someone I had previously played with and I knew sucked. Such a bad thing. DKP: I actually was the person for my guild that put in the DKP every week. I actually enjoyed doing it and never screwed anybody over to be honest. The big issue I saw is the what you mentioned where we would have people with tons of DKP and others with negative DKP all over the place. I was actually also the Druid Class Officer for my guild so I tried to pass on gear to get everyone evenly geared, even though I had way more DKP then every other Druid. Still to this day though, I screwed myself in one of those instances by passing on the Stormrage Belt. It never dropped again. I still have all my Stormrage except for that Belt. I've even done countless runs back through BWL solo on my Druid and it has still never dropped again. Sure dropped on my Warlock, but on my Druid? No way! DKP had its positives and its negatives. For me it was the best solution for our guild at the time. Despite the issues it still overall worked out.
Atlasloot doesn't work like that anymore. In fact, I'm not even 100% sure it ever truly functioned like that. It was a rumor at the time. Now, thanks to WowHead and datamining, we have databases that record each and every possible drop for a boss, so Atlasloot is populated using that information. I don't recall Blizzard ever making a loot table accessible via an addon.
DKP isn't that bad. It just all depends on the people in your guild and how honest they are. I was a kid. Maybe like 10-12. and I was raiding ony. My t2 mage helm dropped and I threw ALL MY DKP on that. All of it. Someone in the guild threw in a point higher than me. The raid leader looked at it and realized that the dude who put in an extra point over me didn't even need the helm at all. He was a totally different class. The raid leader gave me it and said fuck you to the other. Because I needed it. He didn't. DKP makes sense to me back in 40 man's. You raid for points to vote on gear. The people who put more hours into the raids and the guild get more of a chance at that loot. Because gear was far harder to get. While the newer player may not have as much of a chance. He will later down the line when he raids more. Of course the Raid leader should take in consideration on if the person voting truly needs it or it just a small upgrade. My guild use to tell people to link the Item they had and how much DKP they were throwing towards the Item. Then of course the raid leader would figure out who would benefit it from the most.
+Mary Jane I agree that DKP can be used properly with relative ease. People are acting like a warrior can just use DKP on a cloth chest, when I've never in my life seen a guild use a system like that. It sucks to see a loyal raider who shows up every week but can't win a roll get outrolled on an important piece by a guy who was taken to the raid because they needed an extra body, and that's where DKP works. It happened to me before I started doing Mythic HFC; we killed Archimonde every week since the second week he was out on normal and later heroic, yet for the life of me I couldn't get the class trinket. A week before I finally got it because I rolled unopposed (since everybody already had it) we pulled in a bunch of randoms from the guild for an Archi kill so that they could get ring upgrades and whatnot, which we'd do once a week, and some random outrolled me on the class trinket; this was back in late November, and I haven't seen him log on that character once since then, yet I was one of the top 3 dps for the entire raid group. The only rules for DKP should be that the person can use the item and actually needs the item for an upgrade; sure, things were a little more muddled back in the day before armor specializations when Paladins and Druids would wear cloth sometimes, but overall it still worked. We don't really use it because most people are consistent in our guild and it's unnecessary, but I could see instances where it could work in really large guilds with tons of players.
+Andrew Macro Im not even raiding for that matter anymore(also, don't forget the hideous "ahead of the curve achievment" requirement)...but even with a 711ilvl i find it very hard to get into mythic dungeons, as most of the grps require 715+.
+PLord I second this so hard it's not even funny. I have an ilvl 714 rshaman since no guild can work with my work schedule being third shift in an ER and find it hard to get into heroic HFC groups (EVen with AOTC) because I'm not 715. Same with Mythic dungeons. So (Me being a goblin and having a shit ton of gold) I have to buy either carries or buy hfc boe gear to get my ilvl up... It's ridiculous and god forbid I try to get in a heroic hfc group with my 709 hunter...
+Alterscene mythic dungeons are faceroll, was tanking them with 667ilvl on my paladin. Try making your own grp for mythic dungeons it'll make it easier. For the raiding bit, fuck knows try getting some 710 pvp gear and replacing an item thats bellow 700. may get you that 1 ilvl
The other problem with 10 mans, at least in Cata, was the loot drops. When I was in 25m, loot almost always went to someone. In 10m, we were consistently getting gear that nobody could use. Not even that they already had an equal or better item, or even that they were the wrong spec. We would get rogue gear in raids with no rogues etc. We tried to run 1 of each class, but that isn't ideal and some fights even require X ranged, Y melee or class stacking etc. I was in charge of enchanting, and I ended up disenchanting 50-75% of all drops. Meanwhile, we would raid several days every week during "progress" with almost no item progression, and then top 25m guilds would run 10m after 25m was completed and claim that it was easy, when they had cherry picked their 10 ideal classes and top geared players, with gear that a 10m guild could never have had. I assume it's the same in MoP and will be the same in WoD, but I quit years ago.
As a soon to be new player the only thing I sort of understood was No.3 regarding Raid Requirements due to Destiny and people only accepting others who had a Ghalljahorn and the catch 22 was you wanted to join a raid to get that item that but wouldn't be accepted because you didn't have it.
Every issue you said DKP has was addressed by my guild. Resetting DKP was a bad idea, instead do what we called zero-sum. Basically every month DKP for everyone would be balanced based off a percentage of total DKP. The more DKP you had, the more you lost. The less DKP you had, the less you lost. We never once had a single issue with loot or DKP with our system.
I agree with the 9000gearscore/"LINK CHEEVO" issue in WotLK. That ranked up there among the most terrible things I've dealt with. "Oh you took classes and are therefore geared slowly through the expansion, but now you have the correct gear? Guess what. You'll have to wait a few expansions to solo it if you want to see that content."
Gearscore was the single most fucked up thing added to the game. I remember running wotlk dungeons in really good pvp gear (because I pvp'd a lot). I would routinely get kicked from 5 man groups, even though we were facerolling the dungeon and I was doing as much damage as the other clowns. "Nice fucking gear n00b" kicked. Over and over. Would they have rather I entered wearing green and blue shit? Fucking stupid system that has NOTHING to do with skill since these days you basically fucking log into the game and epics are sent to you in game mail.

BBthePally I never said I wanna use bgs to level. Have you ever played a dungeon with eryonebody else using heirlooms? You're a joke there, you can't cast a single spell and the target is dead. Healer, tank,nothing matters because no monster stays alive for more than 5 seconds. Or even better, try a pvp server. Level in THAT world without heirlooms. You have to hide everytime you see an enemy because he has at least 1/3 more hp and damage/spell power. I'm not gonna lie, I have used heirlooms, but if Blizzard asked people if they want heirlooms removed, I'd agree without even asking for a refund.
Cataclysm? OK. But what's wrong with Pandaria? This was the best expansion created for WoW. It had great content, but it actually had a story for a change. Although I agree, Wrath is what this game should have always been. Friendly to both casuals and hardcores.
Borislav Arnaudov That's what I liked about WotLK the most. Mists of Pandaria would have been much better if it was short and focused. Instead it's messy and overlong. No new dungeons kills casual involvement. New islands lose their longevity quickly. LFR loses any grip when you've got the gear or just don't want to see it any more. Quests are so scripted that the replay value is slashed because of the increased length. I mean I liked Mists of Pandaria 'till the end, but it won't be fondly remembered. Cataclysm was great until 4.3, the go to excuse for a patch being shit.

You can't remove loot from a game. No one would want to play. Loot is a instant reward that players look forward to. If you remember way back before raiding was added, we didn't have as big of an issue with bad players. Today its raiding gear the current status symbol of choice. Because if you have the raid gear, that means you've done the raids that it came from.

Maybe you can put a real fight in a game based on the skill of the players, and not their gear. It's not removing loot entirely. I know, this game has became all about the gear and less about actually playing the game for fun. Blizzard almost has killed the game for the casual players. You want to play once or twice a week, and you want to get in on a raid. Well I'm sorry, your gear score is way to low so we don't want you. That and achievements, worst thing ever. I remember when people use to call out in trade that they were looking for people to do instances, but in order to join the group you had to link your GS and Achievement. No wanted you if you didn't already have the achievement. Didn't matter if you just hit level 80 that day. If you didn't have the correct GS or Achievement, you weren't going to join them. This is the reason I don't do dungeons or raids anymore. I raided big time in Wrath. Always joining any raid that was asking for players, but that's along time ago. Now by the time your of the right level, no one will let you join in on their reindeer games with your quest gear. So yeah I understand what you are saying about it being more about gear than skill.

Man, I'd nearly forgotten the days when the "guild bank" was just some guy's alt holding stuff in his personal, private bank with no way of anyone else seeing what was in there. Just (at most) a list on the guild website, that was kept updated by that guy himself.

In vanilla, the only time I've used DKP, we used a zero-sum system (Suicide Kings from memory) and it worked fairly well, at least from my experience. If you want an item, you nominate for it, if you're the highest ranked, you win it, and whoever wins it gets reset to 0 (in order to prevent whoring). So essentially all DKP did was give you priority for a single item. This was extended to a secondary list, so that there was a second level of needing gear, for off-specs, or for main-specs who considered it a minor upgrade. You could still whore with the second list, but it would only last for one item - making it fairer. Of course, even with this DKP system - and all loot systems - you have to rely on players to cooperate and put the interests of the guild ahead. From BC onwards all guilds I've raided with have done some variant of loot council, and it has been fine - though we haven't had any major douchebags in the guilds to spoil things.
Back when I still played WoW and did raids, I was lucky enough to have a rather laid back looting system with the guild. Granted it was End of BC / Wrath that this was done, so things were itemized better for certain classes than vanilla. Basically, we just used Blizzard's built in Loot Leader options to hand out to members who would roll on an item they needed. It is similar in concept to what you described with the DKP above, we just didn't keep any real scores. If you won something, you passed for the other healer kind of situation. Then you both rolled for the next gear you could both use use. Getting an item didn't automatically preclude you from future items, so it was safe to get them if they were an upgrade, regardless of BiS or whatever.
I miss this era. Just in general, I miss the time when Preach was making videos like this.

I stopped playing late WoD, and can't bring myself to play ever again (although I did play WoTLK/Cata classic, some MoP private servers, etc). I don't know what I miss more, the state of the game or my state of mind, or even my life circumstances... But my soul aches for what used to be, and will never happen again... We should be greateful that it happened though, so thanks Preach for all the joy you brought to my life.

yes, but everyone could see it with the addon which led to things like players use pvp gear in raids or players using gear that is not good for their class like paladins with haste rating just to get picked.

Actually the same exact problem exists. On my server (Illidan) you need 550 ilvl to join a flex pug and RF only drops 528. This is obviously a giant flaw, because in order to get 550 you would need to do flex but you cant get invited to flex because you are in 528 RF gear.
Naturally, having a raiding guild gets you around that (somewhat, a lot of guilds actually require ilvl to raid with).
ilvl to day IS the EXACT SAME THING AS GEAR SCORE!! lol. the only difference is that the player base aren't making the same mistakes they were when we had gear score. Same thing, just the way we as a player base treat it is different.

I ran a DKP guild. No one ever quit because of how we handled DKP. And yes there were people like me and my officers who had tens of thousands of DKP, and yet new members still had a fighting chance. (2000 DKP signing bonus)
New members could also build DKP easily because we farmed several raids specifically for the guild bank or to gear low geared new folks.
I also awarded DKP for bank donations, showing up to guild meetings and lastly answering call outs whether for guild mates or just other horde to stop alliance from ganking someone. (That's part of how built our rep was being willing to show up and help anyone being griefed, it was a pvp server.)
We were pve raiders mostly. That's what we loved to do, 25+ raids. Best way to have the people and others in reserve just in case, was to be fair. And progression did not suffer. We were either the 2nd or 3rd horde guild on our server to get 25 man malygos. (I quit playing about half way through wrath) And usually we were in the top 3 guilds overall on our server. Though we did drop in progression a couple of times.
My point is DKP can be fair. It should reward long time members and raiders who show, on time, for every raid. But it shouldn't preclude your new guildies from being able to gear up and raid with you.
many people had a great DKP system my guild also did, I remember it very fondly. Unfortunately I say those objecting to gear score and DKP systems were among the have nots in WoW history, always having a spot in a good raid afforded a lot of happiness

i fucking hated Gearscore I remember back in the day I used to play all the time did all I could to make sure i was playing my Lock at the best I could play him. Gearing up with the best gear I can without raiding getting all the best enchants on my gear but no matter what I did no matter how good my DPS was or how good I played "oh ur GS is'nt blah blah blah bullshit no you cant raid with us" God I fucking hated it. Then one day I magically got into a raid because some guy left the raid, so I got invited somehow. I got there they look at my gearscore and say "hell his GS is way lower then the last guy theres no way were gunna down this boss" and guess what we wiped once then i got the mechanics down and second pull we downed him with me almost toping the DPS charts and I had no raid gear. Guys in the raid still hated me because they were proved wrong and didnt give me the loot that i won roll on. Fucking scum bags.

That was me when I came back to Cata, after quitting during TBC. However, I never managed to get into a raid at all. Eventually just quit again.
I'm not sure how people expected me to get raid gear when literally nobody would accept me TO raid. Even after I practically solo'd Venoxis (from maybe 70%) when the rest of my party wiped :^)
One time a guy on my server decided to start a ICC25 raid, but rather then ask for a gear score requirement he simply wanted people with some experience. Well several people joined and as expected some had some shitty gear lol. But we got really far, almost to Lich King but are tanks had to log off so the raid ended. But that showed me that the gear score system was really shitty at the time. I'm glad its gone.
It's not gone. Blizzard just implemented their own. After GS it was "link your achieve" but at least that was slightly more appropriate as it showed the player had experience. Most players realized however that GS was bullshit, especially when there was some gear like trinkets that were better than others with a higher GS.

A few years back I was doing random dungeons and kept getting teamed up with a particular scumbag (forget the name but it was Shark something). The reason why is because when loot dropped he NEEDED on EVERYTHING no matter if he could wear it or not. I think he was just ignorant of the looting rules cause even when they were explained to him, & you better believe they were very quickly, he still kept doing it anyway. He said, "well, I can sell it for the money-I NEED the money." It's like he thought NEED meant whatever you wanted it to. Like his definition of NEED didn't just have to mean if you could wear it & it upgraded your current gear. To him EVERYTHING was NEEDED cause he needed money! I'have no idea where he is today but I bet he's still doing the same thing.
James Shelnutt I still run into players like this while leveling alts but now if you need roll on a green gear item it soulbinds to you and I'm glad blizzard done that it really puts a limit to the benefits of stealing loot instead of sharing rolls.

I know this is irrelevant and your fans will probably attack me for saying this, but I feel like the more scumbag move in any video game are raid leaders in lotro. Lotro (which people sometimes refer to as a mild version of wow, since there are a lot of similarities between the two games). This has something to do with your "minimum gear point requirement" point. In lotro, especially on the server I am on, no one will let you go on any raid unless you have good gear.
The only way to get good gear is to either be of the craft which crafts your type of gear (tailor for low and mid, metalsmith for heavy), be maxed at top tier guild crafting (which is different than normal crafting) and wait 6 day intervals between each piece of gear. Not to mention, the recipes for these pieces of gear requires a special gem that could only be acquired through the top raids. No one wanted to raid with you if you didn't have good gear, but you could only get good gear by raiding. It was a lose-lose situation for anyone who wasn't a kin leader who couldn't force his kinmembers to take him on raids. This was particularly frustrating for me because I am a younger player than most people in my social circle. Albeit, some are barely a year older than me, I am still one of the youngest. Which means, I am still in school. These scumbags only run raids during school/work days and give kinmembers the weekend off to recover. No chance for younger players, no chance for improvement.
I forgot to mention that only ONE (or, if you're lucky, two) gem drops in every raid. Each different type of gear (helmet, shoulders, tunic, pants, gloves, cloak, and boots) required a DIFFERENT gem. ONE person in the entire 12 person raid would get a jewel. There was no rhyme or reason, just whoever the game decided to give it to. You could also get duplicate gems which was worst than the worst. Back when level 75 was the cap (it's now 100), and Draigoch was the shit, you needed 3 dragonscale gems to make a cloak, and then you needed a clasp to complete the recipe. This clasp only appeared once per raid and if you ran with the same group more than once in a row (which was hard to do since everyone would throw a fit and leave), it would seem like it was always the same guy who got it. This guy had quite a few alts with the claps before our kin-leader even got one.

Difference is that GS was just regarding gear, not actual progress or skill. Raider IO just shows what you've done it actually counteracts the whole ilvl bullshit that we have now.
Funny enough with that is that original wow didnt have this till pre cata and lasted only till I think mid to late M.O.P. which thank fucking god for that oh you want to go do 55 dungeon oh you cant well I guess you can rando that and have a chance but wait it gets better. After mists came out randos only give you within your gear range so if you get a dick in the group everyone else gets left behind so literally the only way you can progress is if your somehow leader and the lowest gear lvl in the group and always need on the stuff to progress ya brilliant thinking blizzard oh and B.O.A. gear doesn't work in dungeon ques so in order to use it you que in jump into your boa then go and they later patched that so you cant what a waste

It's so sad about 25 man raiding guilds...my guild is one of the last true few 25 man raiding guilds on our server. Also loot councils are the absolute worst shit I've ever had to deal with in the game. Also you forgot to mention people that excessively gear their alts in the raid and take loot away from other people's mains.
My guild had DKP but we had a clear systelm: rank Trail: Cannot bid for any item, except if the item isnt going to be disenchanted, Alts-above trails but still cant bid if any main wants it ( BUT if the alt is specificly requested by the raid leader he gains the statute of a normal member, because the player was forced to play with his alt), and up above are the normal Veteran-Marshal-Officer which get the main priority to get loot.
VKGchaos DKP sucked ass. Always did. It was never fair to good players that had real life responsibilities, like a job, and could only show up two or three times a week compared to the kid that could be there every night especially during summer.

Alexander Atanasov This is the type of system that works best. DKP, loot councils, both can go fuck themselves. Your core 10 man group should be a group of 10 friends, not 10 enemies trying to steal loot from each other. A little courtesy can go a long way. My guild has been together since wrath and we have been gearing just fine by allowing the GM to be Master Looter and list items and allow them to be rolled on.
If anything right was done in retail it was the badge gear and personalized loot. You got a roll in for clearing the raid. I admit at one instance I did like the competitive loot rolling thing but I kind of hated the backstabbing loot council shit. People that manipulated others got the best gear of course because of scumbaggery.

Gearscore was THE WORST thing to ever get into WoW and got reformed into ilvl.
Gearscore in short : Dungeon needs 200 GS, Idiot in LFG wants you to have 250 wich is raid score. Makes no sense!!
Gearscore and random dungeon finder were basically the death of the WoW community.
That said, item level and achievs are here and right now truly it’s not too bad. There’s gonna be groups that require stupid high ilvl+achiev, and they’re gonna deny you if you don’t have either. And that’s fine. Because they intend to smash it. There’s also always groups that require the minimum, where you can go if you haven’t done any content yet. And if you want to guarantee yourself a raid spot, you can always find a guild!
Basically the azzhole wants a guarenteed completion

As he discribes it perfectly, my situation was a bit worse.....
As a paladin you had to be a healer in order to raid, however because i was questing i was dps specced since holy talent-paladins were crap for questing and only good for healing in instances or raids....
Because of that i missed the first few raids my guild had and make me loze the DKP points with it.
Eventually when we managed to get some loot the paladin who had more DKP got the loot. At first i was ok with it untill i saw the full, extended effects which can be named as "PROGRESSION"
Yes! the word that f**ked my life was the meaning to "progress" in the raid instances meaning the better geared would always get picked first... That meant for me, even DURING a raid, a higher level pally could come online an hour after the raid started JUST before we were going to attack a boss and kick me out to be replaced with him....
The following then happened:
I got DKP for attending the raid. The NEW paladin got DKP for attending AND killing the boss AND spend it on loot drops which still resulted at a higher increase ( because of multiple boss-kills ) that he'd still have more DKP then me.....
Basicly meaning ANY paladin loot that dropped didn't even go to me but to every other paladin ( we had 4 ) meaning no matter how many times i DID get to raid i never got loot or DKP high enough to compete.
Then they introduced the bidding system ( bidding DKP with a minimum amount, but no maximum ) meaning the very little loot i DID get would either cost me nearly all my DKP to aquire it ( because otherwise it would get disenchanted ) or was simply outbid by any of the regular paladins. And even when i was the only paladin still needing the paladin only item i still had to pay the minimum DKP which often meant spending all my DKP earning of an ENTIRE MONTH just to get 1 item.
They wouldn't just give it free, it was either pay up with your DKP or it gets disenchanted....
This resulted in me eventually quitting the guild because i felt like they were treating me like a 3rd rank guildmember beeing ignored by these people claiming to be your friendly guildmembers but giving crap about your disire to raid or be a part of that team...
Beeing force to raid 5-man instances almost endlessly i discovered a "members only" chat section ( During the burning Crusade ) that was basicly a high-end guild looking for raid channel for recruiting people to do Pug's ( pick up groups containin random people from diffrent guilds ) to raid high end instances like The world tree and Black temple.
Even though i told them i was low-geared they accepted me and gave me a better time then the guild i was in.
It was there in this channel that wasn't even a guild but a random assortment of other people in high-end guilds with the same kind of problems that i actually felt like a member and was eventually a regular in the raiding group(s).
Not to brag but during the "warchief Thrall" section of the world tree i was no1 in healing* and no.6 in DPS on the boss fight as a DPS-paladin.
*This was all due to a game mechanic called the judgement of light which gave every Physical melee or ranged attack heal that person. Combine this small amount x40 players and you get my drift....
If that wasn't enough you could do the same but give back mana instead meaning i was a welcome sight as both a dps and a secondary healer, giving a steady amount to healing to every player around.
If it wasn't for Blizzard making the DPS-spec for the paladin a reasonable option and this chat channel, i probably would have quit WoW because of this opressive system.

Kind of a cruel tradeoff. People would gear up, but I'd be in hysterical laughter at their panicky deaths the entire time.
gearscore ruined wotlk for me. i had stopped playing and joined right before icc i think so i had very little time to gear up along the others. so i was very much behind. guess what. i never raided icc.
I wasn't even level 80 when ICC opened, and it was easy for me :b I just started the groups myself in the beginning. In the first few weeks I only got like 2-4 bosses down, but the extra emblems and occasional loot, made it easy for me to join a guild and quickly start heroic raiding :b But i guess it differs from server to server. and another tip is to just link an uncompleted achiev, this was especially useful in 25-man runs, as the leader had to manage a lot, and often didn't bother to look at it.
As a warlock in those days it was easy for me to get into a group(mostly) Naxx was my first raid I'll never forget that T7.5 gear. I regret deleting him.

i liked his complaint about DKP. Thankfully the guilds i was in never used DKP we used a loot roll rule. Everyone is entitled to one win through need roll until everyone of that loot class has gotten an upgrade then it resets. That means you roll need on stuff until you win a piece for your class specific needs then once you win you can't roll need until everyone else of the same grouping has gotten something.

Our guild used something like a need vs greed system for sharing our loot , usually the people that need specific items to improve get that thing , if no one needs it , it gets auctioned away into a stack of gold to fund our raids , basically everyone gets what they need and we never have to restock on potions cause we auction away useless junk. After a lot of our guild members left the game (due to life ) me and my ex guild leader joined a guild that uses DKP. We quit after the first raid even though we almost carried their asses. I hated the DKP system , I hate how guild members can't just give new guild members what they need and improve the guild overall in raiding. The selfishness of a man can often turn them into monsters.
We had a mix back in Cata that worked well. It was MS item first, and then it went to need v greed, but raid points detertmined who got it. So if both A and B needed it for MS, but A got gear last raid and spent his points, B spent his and got it ( unless someone was extremely generous and worked out a deal)
The fact that your salty ass quit after one raid is a perfect example of the strength of dkp it keeps randos from taking a bunch of loot and ghosting the next day.

Loot council worked really well for my guild. Everyone got loot. For items more than one class needed IE: rogues and warrior weps. Warriors would get it one week and then rogues the next. If it didn't drop the next week rogues kept priority until it dropped again. It really helps when your LC isn't corrupt and really has the betterment of the guild in mind. It also helps when your guild isn't full of loot whores and know their turn will come.
Then there's the problem that there is no raid that week skipped and guild forgets it was warrior 1's turn on the loot and gives it to warrior 2.
the worst thing about the gearscore addon was the twats who designed it, giving vendor loot of the same item level as loot from raids a lower score, so anyone who had more than a few badge pieces would always have a lower gearscore than people wearing the same level gear from only raids. then there was the sparkle pony debacle where it would seek out the pony in your mount tab and deduct gearscore if you had it.

Me and my friends struggled through and downed everything but the last boss of every dungeon at the beginning of Cata. Funny thing too is we were also doing Cho'Gall wrong, and got him to like 3% on our best attempt. We didn't learn of this situation until much later, and it made the whole situation funny when we realized that the struggles were because they completely fucked it up.
I absolutely despised DKP. I always ended up being in the negatives because I had to take the crap than no one wanted. And since I could never get the really good gear, they always wanted the people who already had the gear to do the raid... So I would sit outside, with my negative DKP, unable to earn new points to get the gear that no one wanted because the Idiots who thought this was a good idea wanted the best possible chance to get the one fucking item at the end of the raid that all the high end people were saving their DKP for.
DKP Raiding is one of the contributing factors for me leaving WOW the first time.

Not giving DKP to the benched players should be an obvious problem to any guild officer. If a person shows up at raid time, stays online the whole raid, and stays ready to swap in at a moment's notice, then they should get points to spend.
Your problem sounds less like a problem with points themselves and more a problem with idiotic management. The twin goals of any loot distribution system should be to maximize the benefit to the raid and to reward the people who show up for progression. Letting a few players accumulate more points and denying points to others who show up just ensures that big upgrades don't go to the people who need them and the raid suffers.

'Gearscore' started before the addon was around - the addon just filled a request for a quick verify method. It actually started in Burning Crusade, I have screenshots at the end of BC where pug _Heroics_ were requiring T6 or equivalent gear. Only thing then is you had to invite them, wait for them to be summoned to, then inspect them to verify. Gearscore just made it easier to be like that - you could quickly verify via addon.
I loved when it temporarily went to achievement link only, because (If people don't know) you can actually link any achievement in the game, and have it tagged with your name and a date like you actually earned the achievement and this fooled people for awhile to the point where group leaders literally had the armoury up in the background to verify gear/acheivements lol.
This still applies for todays wow sadly, me being a 'Mythic' raider, i joined a Sylvanas HC run, pulled when the timer hit 0, but the tank never went in, so i took 2 arrows to the face and died. 3 people instantly jumped on me spamming "lol 10/10 mythic raider, gj buddy" pretty much flaming me for the entire pull (Oh, neither of those people had any mythic kills) A rogue even took it to whispers, and told me i was mentally ill, i was a retard, i should off myself.. the list goes on. All of this, because i died as a mythic raider, on a HC boss.. you love to see it.
The first time I got my Kingslayer title was actually on a crap character that had just dinged recently with some heroic gear. Late night, went into general chat and start a alt ICC25 pug. Didn't ask for gearscore or anything. We went in there, with 2 wipes and on that night we cleared EVERYTHING up to LK.
Gearscore/itemlevel never.... meant.... shit. Understanding of game mechanics, tactics and class was key.

DKP is the worst. While raiding as the off-tank during Hyjal, a cape dropped for the tanks. The other tank was way more geared than me. So, I bid for it. And what did he do? He bid against me. Why? To make it so I would have to spend even more DKP for this cape, and then wouldn't compete against him on loot he may wanted.
Either I spend all my DKP on one item, or he gets it and vendors it.

Gearscore: Wow was this the most horrible thing that ever plagued the game. I remember I took a break from the game for about a month and then came back and suddenly no matter where I went everyone was asking you about your stupid gearscore as if that score automatically meant you could play. I remember specifically getting told I couldn't run in instances because of my score and various people dropping me to bring someone I had previously played with and I knew sucked. Such a bad thing.
DKP: I actually was the person for my guild that put in the DKP every week. I actually enjoyed doing it and never screwed anybody over to be honest. The big issue I saw is the what you mentioned where we would have people with tons of DKP and others with negative DKP all over the place. I was actually also the Druid Class Officer for my guild so I tried to pass on gear to get everyone evenly geared, even though I had way more DKP then every other Druid. Still to this day though, I screwed myself in one of those instances by passing on the Stormrage Belt. It never dropped again. I still have all my Stormrage except for that Belt. I've even done countless runs back through BWL solo on my Druid and it has still never dropped again. Sure dropped on my Warlock, but on my Druid? No way! DKP had its positives and its negatives. For me it was the best solution for our guild at the time. Despite the issues it still overall worked out.

Atlasloot doesn't work like that anymore. In fact, I'm not even 100% sure it ever truly functioned like that. It was a rumor at the time. Now, thanks to WowHead and datamining, we have databases that record each and every possible drop for a boss, so Atlasloot is populated using that information. I don't recall Blizzard ever making a loot table accessible via an addon.

DKP isn't that bad. It just all depends on the people in your guild and how honest they are. I was a kid. Maybe like 10-12. and I was raiding ony. My t2 mage helm dropped and I threw ALL MY DKP on that. All of it. Someone in the guild threw in a point higher than me. The raid leader looked at it and realized that the dude who put in an extra point over me didn't even need the helm at all. He was a totally different class. The raid leader gave me it and said fuck you to the other. Because I needed it. He didn't.
DKP makes sense to me back in 40 man's. You raid for points to vote on gear. The people who put more hours into the raids and the guild get more of a chance at that loot. Because gear was far harder to get. While the newer player may not have as much of a chance. He will later down the line when he raids more. Of course the Raid leader should take in consideration on if the person voting truly needs it or it just a small upgrade. My guild use to tell people to link the Item they had and how much DKP they were throwing towards the Item. Then of course the raid leader would figure out who would benefit it from the most.
+Mary Jane I agree that DKP can be used properly with relative ease. People are acting like a warrior can just use DKP on a cloth chest, when I've never in my life seen a guild use a system like that. It sucks to see a loyal raider who shows up every week but can't win a roll get outrolled on an important piece by a guy who was taken to the raid because they needed an extra body, and that's where DKP works. It happened to me before I started doing Mythic HFC; we killed Archimonde every week since the second week he was out on normal and later heroic, yet for the life of me I couldn't get the class trinket. A week before I finally got it because I rolled unopposed (since everybody already had it) we pulled in a bunch of randoms from the guild for an Archi kill so that they could get ring upgrades and whatnot, which we'd do once a week, and some random outrolled me on the class trinket; this was back in late November, and I haven't seen him log on that character once since then, yet I was one of the top 3 dps for the entire raid group.
The only rules for DKP should be that the person can use the item and actually needs the item for an upgrade; sure, things were a little more muddled back in the day before armor specializations when Paladins and Druids would wear cloth sometimes, but overall it still worked. We don't really use it because most people are consistent in our guild and it's unnecessary, but I could see instances where it could work in really large guilds with tons of players.

I have an ilvl 714 rshaman since no guild can work with my work schedule being third shift in an ER and find it hard to get into heroic HFC groups (EVen with AOTC) because I'm not 715. Same with Mythic dungeons. So (Me being a goblin and having a shit ton of gold) I have to buy either carries or buy hfc boe gear to get my ilvl up... It's ridiculous and god forbid I try to get in a heroic hfc group with my 709 hunter...
+Alterscene mythic dungeons are faceroll, was tanking them with 667ilvl on my paladin. Try making your own grp for mythic dungeons it'll make it easier. For the raiding bit, fuck knows try getting some 710 pvp gear and replacing an item thats bellow 700. may get you that 1 ilvl
The other problem with 10 mans, at least in Cata, was the loot drops. When I was in 25m, loot almost always went to someone. In 10m, we were consistently getting gear that nobody could use. Not even that they already had an equal or better item, or even that they were the wrong spec. We would get rogue gear in raids with no rogues etc. We tried to run 1 of each class, but that isn't ideal and some fights even require X ranged, Y melee or class stacking etc. I was in charge of enchanting, and I ended up disenchanting 50-75% of all drops. Meanwhile, we would raid several days every week during "progress" with almost no item progression, and then top 25m guilds would run 10m after 25m was completed and claim that it was easy, when they had cherry picked their 10 ideal classes and top geared players, with gear that a 10m guild could never have had.
I assume it's the same in MoP and will be the same in WoD, but I quit years ago.
As a soon to be new player the only thing I sort of understood was No.3 regarding Raid Requirements due to Destiny and people only accepting others who had a Ghalljahorn and the catch 22 was you wanted to join a raid to get that item that but wouldn't be accepted because you didn't have it.

Every issue you said DKP has was addressed by my guild. Resetting DKP was a bad idea, instead do what we called zero-sum. Basically every month DKP for everyone would be balanced based off a percentage of total DKP. The more DKP you had, the more you lost. The less DKP you had, the less you lost. We never once had a single issue with loot or DKP with our system.
This just got recommended to me. Oof.

"Oh you took classes and are therefore geared slowly through the expansion, but now you have the correct gear? Guess what. Gearscore was the single most fucked up thing added to the game. I remember running wotlk dungeons in really good pvp gear (because I pvp'd a lot). I would routinely get kicked from 5 man groups, even though we were facerolling the dungeon and I was doing as much damage as the other clowns. "Nice fucking gear n00b" kicked. Over and over. Would they have rather I entered wearing green and blue shit? Fucking stupid system that has NOTHING to do with skill since these days you basically fucking log into the game and epics are sent to you in game mail.

BBthePally I never said I wanna use bgs to level. Have you ever played a dungeon with eryonebody else using heirlooms? You're a joke there, you can't cast a single spell and the target is dead. Healer, tank,nothing matters because no monster stays alive for more than 5 seconds. Or even better, try a pvp server. Level in THAT world without heirlooms. You have to hide everytime you see an enemy because he has at least 1/3 more hp and damage/spell power. I'm not gonna lie, I have used heirlooms, but if Blizzard asked people if they want heirlooms removed, I'd agree without even asking for a refund.

Cataclysm? OK. But what's wrong with Pandaria? This was the best expansion created for WoW. It had great content, but it actually had a story for a change. Although I agree, Wrath is what this game should have always been. Friendly to both casuals and hardcores.
Borislav Arnaudov That's what I liked about WotLK the most. Mists of Pandaria would have been much better if it was short and focused. Instead it's messy and overlong. No new dungeons kills casual involvement. New islands lose their longevity quickly. LFR loses any grip when you've got the gear or just don't want to see it any more. Quests are so scripted that the replay value is slashed because of the increased length.
I mean I liked Mists of Pandaria 'till the end, but it won't be fondly remembered.

You can't remove loot from a game. No one would want to play. Loot is a instant reward that players look forward to. If you remember way back before raiding was added, we didn't have as big of an issue with bad players. Today its raiding gear the current status symbol of choice. Because if you have the raid gear, that means you've done the raids that it came from.

I know, this game has became all about the gear and less about actually playing the game for fun. Blizzard almost has killed the game for the casual players. You want to play once or twice a week, and you want to get in on a raid. Well I'm sorry, your gear score is way to low so we don't want you. That and achievements, worst thing ever. I remember when people use to call out in trade that they were looking for people to do instances, but in order to join the group you had to link your GS and Achievement. No wanted you if you didn't already have the achievement. Didn't matter if you just hit level 80 that day. If you didn't have the correct GS or Achievement, you weren't going to join them. This is the reason I don't do dungeons or raids anymore. I raided big time in Wrath. Always joining any raid that was asking for players, but that's along time ago. Now by the time your of the right level, no one will let you join in on their reindeer games with your quest gear. So yeah I understand what you are saying about it being more about gear than skill.
So Ben, you would rather live with the problem rater than fix the bad players. And so what if the bad players left. The game would get better with them gone.

Man, I'd nearly forgotten the days when the "guild bank" was just some guy's alt holding stuff in his personal, private bank with no way of anyone else seeing what was in there. Just (at most) a list on the guild website, that was kept updated by that guy himself.

I love your narration you explain things exactly as they are in the world of war craft.
In vanilla, the only time I've used DKP, we used a zero-sum system (Suicide Kings from memory) and it worked fairly well, at least from my experience. If you want an item, you nominate for it, if you're the highest ranked, you win it, and whoever wins it gets reset to 0 (in order to prevent whoring). So essentially all DKP did was give you priority for a single item. This was extended to a secondary list, so that there was a second level of needing gear, for off-specs, or for main-specs who considered it a minor upgrade. You could still whore with the second list, but it would only last for one item - making it fairer.
Of course, even with this DKP system - and all loot systems - you have to rely on players to cooperate and put the interests of the guild ahead. From BC onwards all guilds I've raided with have done some variant of loot council, and it has been fine - though we haven't had any major douchebags in the guilds to spoil things.
Back when I still played WoW and did raids, I was lucky enough to have a rather laid back looting system with the guild. Granted it was End of BC / Wrath that this was done, so things were itemized better for certain classes than vanilla.
Basically, we just used Blizzard's built in Loot Leader options to hand out to members who would roll on an item they needed. It is similar in concept to what you described with the DKP above, we just didn't keep any real scores. If you won something, you passed for the other healer kind of situation. Then you both rolled for the next gear you could both use use. Getting an item didn't automatically preclude you from future items, so it was safe to get them if they were an upgrade, regardless of BiS or whatever.
