    Let me save all of you some time - stay away from buying units unless you want a sore back and a warehouse full of absolute crap you can't get rid of. You can make money doing it but you had better love selling at the flea market or have a way to move the TONS of junk you will accumulate. I did it for 2 years full-time. Less than 10% of the stuff you buy will be appropriate to sell on ebay (really only around 5%) - practically nothing is appropriate for Amazon because of the condition of the items (even new in the box will be blemished or boxes will be crushed) - the rest is craigslist or yard sales and you need A LOT of space to store everything. Then you have to deal with the trash - which often almost half the units are nothing but un-sellable, broken trash. I have never worked so physically hard in my life. It was harder than when I worked construction - especially if you don't have a partner to help with moving the big items. God forbid you find a piano in the back (happened to me twice - and neither was in sellable condition.) My back is permanently damaged because of all the repetitive and heavy lifting. I too had a thrift store and that's it's own set of problems because you need to hire employees to run that while you are buying, moving and sorting and all that costs money.
    Also - it's a 7 day a week job. When you buy a unit it has to be cleaned out in 1-2 days usually - no exceptions unless you want to pay to rent the unit for a month - and I've had to load plenty of units in the dark on weekends after working all day at the thrift store. Then you need transportation - usually a box truck or a big covered trailer to move stuff - and you might need to move it from an hour or two away from you and keep it dry and safe when you get back - unless you want to unload it right then. I'm making about as much money just picking and selling on ebay as I was buying units with none of the headaches or labor. It's fun and the bidding wars are very exciting but, for me, it wasn't worth it. If you have enough capital to start off right away with a big space and hire several employees and run it as more of a manager then go for it, but if you're over 35 - I wouldn't recommend it other than as a side hustle.

      Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative post. I always thought it looked like more work than it was worth. I'm guessing units were also a lot cheaper before fake reality shows like Storage Wars existed, where about one out of five units is worth a small fortune.

    • @saltyapostle44
      @saltyapostle44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ZefTillDeath8878 I've heard plenty of stories from old timers about all the $5 units that profited them thousands of dollars back in the 80's and 90's. Yes - the TV shows really screwed it up. Most people only buy a few units before they quit but there is a steady supply of newbies that think they are going to make a killing on every unit and they keep the prices jacked up. It's an adventure everyone should try once.

    Thank you for this video. The timing was perfect to apply to my life this truth of selling to other resellers as a good business model. I sold a painted bench for almost half what I could have, but I still made four times my money. Needed the bench out of my vintage booth to have space to reorganize.

      Deals Gap is a popular and internationally famous destination for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts, as it is located along a stretch of two-lane road known since 1981 as "The Dragon" or the "Tail of the Dragon".The 11-mile stretch of the Dragon in Tennessee is said to have 318 curves. Some of the Dragon's sharpest curves have names like Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Shade Tree Corner, Mud Corner, Sunset Corner, Gravity Cavity, Beginner's End, and Brake or Bust Bend. The road earned its name from its curves being said to resemble a dragon's tail. The stretch bears the street name "Tapoco Road" in North Carolina and "Calderwood Highway" in Tennessee and is signed entirely by US 129. To those coming from the North Carolina side, the Dragon begins at Fugitive Bridge with a view of the Cheoah Dam where Harrison Ford jumped in the movie The Fugitive.

    We just started buying storage units (my father and I). It is exciting, to say the least. We get a lot of trash, but we have a strategy and a large barn to house the trash until bulk garbage pick up. So far, I have doubled and tripled my investment AFTER accounting for our time, fuel, etc. We plan to continue buying until it doesn't make sense anymore. We have one commercial storefront space to operate my eBay store and the fiance's alterations and apparel design studio out of. Anything not worthy of online gets consigned to the church thrift store here in town.
    Lots of fun I have being a reseller full time. Would rather do this than building houses like i used too!

    60 storage units a year is a lot? Thats 5 units a month. I regularly deal with storage unit buyers who do that in a day, let alone a week. And they don't even utilize a warehouse this size, that actually costs significant money out here.
    This storage unit buyer is more of a hoarder than an actual reseller.
