  • Whatever you think is a permanent part of your life won’t last forever. Somewhere on an Italian mountainside, we found the sad proof of that. There is a broken city where families lost everything. After a decade of neglect, hundreds of homes sit empty today in varying states of deterioration. What happened here?
Wherever you go here: The abandoned houses still contain all the possessions, which shows that families had to flee from their homes overnight. In this episode, we explore dozens of derelict structures to see what is left behind. Almost one thousand people used to live in this city, and now it is a ghost town. Life can change in an instant. #urbex #abandonedplaces #bwturbex

Since there are so many open questions and requests, we did a follow-up! Watch a new Italian ghost town exploration here: th-cam.com/video/-5tznjeYABE/w-d-xo.html
After posting this first ghost town video from our recent Italy trip, we got in touch with several locals who could explain why there are many of such uninhabited villages all across the country. Houses with everything in it were simply abandoned. The Italian people who reached out to us helped us understand this rather complex subject. It is not that easy for people to return to their old homes. The insights we learned are part of our second ghost town exploration.

God bless and keep them. I don't think I have been there even so I did visited quite a few Italian places including my friend's home up in the mountain somewhere so remote and very close to some borders. Very sad to this facts only can pray.

Forgive my grammar but English is my forth language and I'll try to do the best as I can... .
I don't know how I got to this video but it sure brings back memories of my friends in Tuscany.. They lived in one of the most attractive villages and I use to go and visit them, spend time in different places, enjoying artifacts and building of the medieval times. The weekly market in the main square was also one of my favorite. It made me feel like I was back in time. I was very fascinated by everything and I made sure that every time I went to Italy they would be on my list of friends to visit. I took many videos and pictures and I will always treasure them..
My friends life changed very suddenly when the government notified them and the rest of the people in the village that they had to evacuate because the village was in danger. The village was build on a rocky hill. Underneath there was an active coal mine where miners would excavate coal every day. The government of the region knew of the danger but never said anything until the hill was in the verge of collapsing...
My friends left many thing behind, always with the intention of retrieving them once they had settle but unfortunately, shortly after they left, the government locked up all the houses and they were prohibited to enter.
Years later (by then they lived in the city) on one of my visits, I told them that I would like to have gone back to see the village. They showed their sadness and told me that the village was blocked and we couldn't not enter. I told them, as long as we have a mind and 2 good working legs we will find a way and, if anyone would asks questions, let me do the talking and I will tell them I don't speak Italian..😂
It took them 3 days to decide but finally they agreed to go. For me it was exiting to return to the village and I didn't understand why it was so difficult for them. Their new place was beautiful and they had everything a person could have asked for, but still, there was something there that I couldn't figure out.
When we arrived to the village, to my amazement, all the greenery were overgrown and in places it looked like a jungle. The houses were visible but everyone of them were securely locked. I looked up to the top of the hill and there stood my friend's house. The good memories got to me and I got very emotional. Tears came to my eyes but, my friend hugged me and whisper; you're not the only one that feels that way and she started to cry.. Right then I understood why it was so difficult for them to return to the village. They could see their house but couldn't get to it. And even if they could, they couldn't get in. They told me later that in that house they had left half of their most precious memories (their family and their children pictures and much of the belongings past down from generation) and couldn't get to them. Many times they asked for permission to enter, but permission was never granted.
With sadness we start walking down a small path, that path took us in front a rocky wall on the side of the hill where the people from the village had build a small shrine of the Virgin Mary, in honor of the 48 people of the village that were shot on that wall during the war. We sat on a rock and they took the time to tell me as much history as they could about the village with a great enthusiastic look on their faces. Any one could tell they were happy to be there and that they missed the place.
I learned more history about the village that day then all of the previous times put together. They missed their home, their belongings, their friends and the life they were building for themselves in that particular village. Unfortunately, the government took all that away in a blink of an eye.. The sadness that belongs to those ghosts villages could make anyone cry long after the people have moved on..
Thank you so much for the beautiful video and for bringing back wonderful memories. 💖 Good luck to you on your next exploration...I hope that someday you will get to the village that I left my heart...

    This is my village.
My childhood is filled with memories of these same streets that I now see empty, destroyed and growing bushes. That "bar" that is shown somewhere mid-video was actually the only shop in town and the gathering place to watch football on the weekends, the square was beautiful, the city's life revolved around it and the annual festival took place on it.
It pains me to see every second of this video in ways that I cannot describe. I can only thank you for sharing the story of what happened here and also for not mentioning the name, keeping what is left of our town safe.
There is an organization making a tremendous effort to bring the village back to life, with many of my neighbors and their descendants participating in it.
    Once more, thank you.

The two things combined make it much easier for me to understand English with subtitles than without them.

That's how it's like in my southeast asian culture too. But only our houses/apartments are right beside each other with extended families like aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents in adjacent lots.
Because in my country, land plot deed is shared from a parent to equally their children. So for example, my grandparents have 6 children (my mom and 2 aunts, 3 uncles); so my grandparents' plot of land is divided into 6, hence we have 6 apartment/house in a "housing complex" style.

Someone else commented it & I agree- these folks are the National Geographic of Urbex! It’s true!!!
These videos are just in another universe with even the biggest channels!! The humble & respectful approach to document & record the history, the backstory to the places & things, the artistic quality of the photography & videography - it’s just incredible!!!! Each video is a delight! It feels almost like actually being there in person & I always learn something interesting!!
    KUDOS!
This is pretty much the only Urbex channel I can stand to watch, if I do watch any videos on other channels I have to mute the volume & fast forward through a lot. Their juvenile approach to the entire project, the inappropriate music, the way they have to handle, poke, prod & move objects, the commotion between the explorers, their ignorance as to the history of the places & things, their disregard of dangerous situations like black mold etc is just beyond annoying & makes it just impossible for me to enjoy looking at the places filmed. This channel has NONE of those issues - AT ALL!!! There’s just absolutely no comparison to be perfectly honest! 👏👏👏👏👏

I've heard about this village before from an italian friend of mine. The story is even sadder than what is being told here.
After people left their homes, they were told they could return in a few weeks. When that was no longer viable, they were told the government would recover some of the more major belongings (like cars, bicycles and such) in the safer parts of the lower village.
None of that happened. People never got to take their stuff back nor got any real compensation. It is really a saddening story.

Thank you for not telling the location. It appeared on my youtube and I recognized instantly. I lived just in the nearby village. Usually, during the months and years following that night, people were accompanied by firefighters to gather their belongings (of course, only small things). But in some cases, it was just too dangerous. In this village, even the streets are no more accessible.

I once went to jail for about 2 months, while in there I lost my apartment and they cleaned it out and threw everything in the dumpster. All my possessions from my clothes to my birth certificate and social security card and everything.
    Lost my job.
Got out homeless and jobless with just the clothes I was wearing on probation with a $250 a month probation fee I had to pay or I violate and risk going to prison. But I couldn't get a job with no birth certificate or social card.
    It was super tough.
I went to jail for a little marijuana, which is now legal.
Life can change on you real quick.

Despite the obvious destruction, you can still see relics of what once was a typical beautiful Italian town. The architectural character, the surroundings, everything about it just screams out this is what a Postcard Italian town should look like--albeit, not the destruction aspects. Surely the type of town worth saving if not for its potential living community despite needed re-construction, for its iconic and world heritage value.

As a mason, I believe these structures were built to withstand some shock (it looks bad, I know) - but they can bend and shift and crumble. Afterwards, they should be repointed and repaired one block at a time - slightly altered to accommodate the change in terrain. Those craftsman who can do this are no longer with us today, therefore, the steel industry has come in to fix the problem. The tragedy might be in the fact that the construction knowledge needed to actually exist in this place has been lost.

Thank you. It says a lot about how things are in Italy. I have seen 2 villages so far that had to be abandoned because of earthquakes and being on mountains. Says a lot, tbh. Earthquakes are a normal thing in Italy. So landslides and more is not something to look forward to in mountain villages.
