We are Gruhak I have two sets of Wizz, the Beano set & his regular clones! They’ve really made a huge improvement in both guitars I use( 2002 Custom Shop R-0/ Historic Makeovers) & a 1963 ES-335TDC reissue block inlay from 2014!
@@LPCustom3 Mine is a 08' Standard faded. Great guitar, and the BB pro's were good, just not my cup of tea. I ordered a Jimmy Page set with the wiring and all. It's like a new instrument.

I think without a doubt people will love the Wizz pickups better. For the cost of admission though I don’t hear a big enough sonic enhancement to justify replacements of the original pickups. Honestly if I wanted to buy an R9 and spend the money on a premium grade instrument, I would play as many as I could and purchase the guitar that sounds best to me rather than buy and shape into what I wanted. The world is your oyster at this price range and add an additional $500 to an already $6k instrument seems futile. I’ve chased Tone for years and gone down the rabbit hole myself. The only thing is it cost me playing time. Rather than focus on becoming a better player I focused on trying new mods and pickups. After 2 decades of modding guitars and playing I’ve come to the conclusion nobody cared about my mods and if I had just practiced more my abilities would make a bigger impact on the sound than getting that extra 10% of tone.
I'm late to the party this time and it's surprising how many people didn't hear any difference. The first chord you played I could hear the bass and presence of the Wizz. They sound stellar Johan! Also knowing how many videos you've done with the stock R9, the burstbuckers are still excellent. I've been really happy with the BB Pro's in my Standard
I think I like the slightly thinner sound of the burstbucker I. It sounds more old-school to my ears. I like vintage sounding guitars and amps tho. Thanks for sharing Johan!
Very similar, but the Wizz sounded just a tad bit sweeter to me. A little more open and airy sounding. The Burstbucker packed more of a punch, I think. It's just up to personal preferences. Both sound really good to my ears.
I changed the magnets out on the Burstbucker set in my ES335. Both are rough cast A4 now and the bridge magnet has a stronger magnetic charge on it. The difference is astounding.
DMSProduktions The bridge BB2 has a nasal/honk midrange that wasn’t there with the stock A2. The neck BB1 is less boomy/flubby with more top end. Reminds me of the Seymour Slash set or Pearly Gates set. The stronger charge on the bridge A4 made a huge difference in the midrange.
I’ve replaced magnets in a variety of pickups with both rough and smooth A4’s almost universally A4’s are more open than A2’s, and articulate without being a bit icepicky like some A5 pickups can be. Better midrange and smoother low end to my ears than A5, too. Swapping out the A2’s for A4’s in Gibson 490 pickups really wake them up. A4 loaded 490’s are some of my favorite pickups.
@@corneliuscrewe8165 another vote for alnico 4. Broad but also natural sounding. I think it lets the character of the guitar come through more compared to the compressed lower mids of alnico 2 and the higher mid chirp in the alnico 5
It really comes down to that sound in your head. Burstbuckers seem more modern with a top end clarity to drive a full on Marshall stack hard. Removing the nickel cover would aid a PAF in getting there. The Wizz is more vintage with more upper midrange emphasis and softer bite
BBs are one of Gibson's best pickups but the Wizz are much more refined and have more spectrum, dimension and sustain. As well as more sparkle and chime. I have a set in one of my Les Paul guitars and they are right up there with Tom Holmes, Bare knuckles and Arcane.. which are all a cut above Lollars and Throbaks. .
Wizz sounds better once again. The Wizz neck has a bit more weighty or fat sound but is still very clear and not muddy. I thought the Burstbucker sounded a bit light for a neck pickup but I guess it all depends on what you like. I thought the Wizz sounded like the neck pickup sound in my head. The perfect neck pickup. There is always something better but in small increments. I wonder what pickups are better than Wizz? As long as he doesn't raise his prices I will buy more Wizz pickups. The prices are getting a lil out of hand with some of these companies.
The WIZZ pickups have their thing to them...and in other comparisons.....they sound as close to a real PAF as you can get with consideration to all the clones on the market. Personally I favor the Gibson Burst Bucker 1's due to the minimal winding compared to the #2 & #3 versions. But I would change the bar magnet to an Alnico4 in them rather than what Gibson puts in them.....and then wax pot them too. I think in some cases from what I have been able to read on the WIZZ, the guy uses the Alnico4's also in them. My preference for the Gibson is based on being more domestically available and less costly than a WIZZ set, but they need to be adjusted with the magnet. If cost was no factor in selection...WIZZ wins
What, Johan playing the neck pickup? What is this wizardry?!! Really hard to say which one I like better. The Wizz sounds great on lead lines, but the Burstbucker sounded more articulate for chording. I almost feel like the differences could be EQ’d out by the amp. Both sound really good in their own ways.
Both pips are excellent, really? I suspect Skydog would have made either set sing and roar. The Wizz set seem a tad darker to me, which is gritty/great. That BB set sure rings clear on full chords and maybe while not as warm on single notes, that might change through a cranked JTM45. Thanks to Mr. Vibrolux too.
Since there is NO one PAF tone they both probably sound like some PAF. Anybody remember what their PAF sounded like when it was new? Forget all this "clone" hype and get a PU you like. Mostly the differences are so small a little tweek on the tone controls of your amp will do it. I left the BB's in my R8 and they sound great. My 335 has the original Shaws and also sound great, but my fav is my Sunburst 22 PRS with the original wind 57/08's (8.1k & 7.8k). 57/08's have changed several times over the years, The new ones sold from PRS are not the same as the ones in my guitar.
