Ok, I'm mind fu$&ed here I have NEVER heard a closer or more awesome sounding pickup, pearly gates yeah there good, burst bucker 1 and 2 good, 57 classics good, these oh my God I can't believe what I'm hearing, I'm blown away, amazing 🌋
How do these stack up against the Seymour Duncan Antiquity set? It seems like the only real alternative, and being a NC native and resident I would really like to know if these compete with the Antiquity so I can buy local. 👍🏼
I’m sort of interested in these pickups, but I’d like to hear a real A-B comparison, you know, with the same guitar, the volume knob set on 10, playing the same riff.
Why did Mojotone discontinue this pup? Is the only difference between these and the 59 Clone in the RC Alnico 2 vs the Alnico 4 in the 59 (and the aged cover option)? Buehler?
Dude, you know how to get “that sound”. Great comp-on, I like your traditional very much, original PAF have a bit less highs, a bit more midrange, but new pickups are more solid in good way.
Damn, haven't seen a better box, I seen more hyped up boxes like the Monty's with the wax seal, hand dipped strawberries and bottle of champaign, but this is more appropriate. I thought they were the Harbor Freight of guitar parts, but this box makes me want to do some more investigating.
A good PAF sounds like a single coil as far as dynamics are concerned when the vol pot is down. This is what you want to look for in PAF. And to like the core tone ofc
one problem I consistently observe in mojotone pickups is that they aren't voiced for the original strings, i.e., pure nickel. They are wound dark to compensate for the modern high output steel strings.
What Pots do you recommend for these? Along with the caps? If I remember right 59s used 500k or 550k pots and a 0.015uf for neck cap and a 0.033uf for the bridge cap. Otherwise what do you recommend with this set?
Andrew Rush the pots were 500K if they were a higher value in recent years it is because the pots go high as they wear. The caps are 0.02uF bumble bee caps. I'm not sure the type of caps make that much difference. 0.015uF on the neck tone control is the Clapton mod. I don't know if he did it on his Les Paul on the Beano album or if it was something he did to his SG Les Paul.
Mark70609 I just went with 500k CTS pots and the Clapton Womens tone mod for caps. Wired based on a 59 wiring diagram. Sounds really good with these Mojotone PAF’s in my Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top.
Andrew Rush good to hear you are happy with your Epiphone Les Paul. Which 59 set did you go with? Hot, normal or low winding? I got a set of 60th Anniversary 54 Strat pickups and they are very chimey. The Mojotone does seem to have the boutique mojo at a reasonable price.
Mojotone, the pickups sound great, but did the originals come with the little black strips of insulator material between the bobbins and maple spacer? Didn't the originals have only one maple spacer? Your pickup appears to have two maple spacers in this video. Are the four bobbin to base plate mounting screws you use made of brass or steel? Thanks
@@Dad-Gad No, I was only asking for educational purposes. Obviously the extra spacer is not necessary unless they have an issue with bobbin warping. They have indeed revised their bobbin material, so maybe that was the case. You can always remove the extra spacer if you are seriously worried that it is affecting your tone :). I use maple and plastic. It's mostly about tension, TPL, turns count and the resulting inductance from the sum of all conductive and ferrous materials. FWIW, "Historic" means one maple spacer, and no added insulator. The Mojos still sound great though.
Thank you for asking, the covers do come installed. Wood make no difference ? pickups only capture what they receive and each guitar has a different tone. That is why old strats or LP sound way better than re issues. So yes wood makes a difference and you cannot compare 1 thing (pickups) if the key element( wood) changes as well. Please compare on same wood piece that would help understanding if your pickups are as good as you say they are. Thanks
Hardly a comparison; the vintage doesn’t sound very PAF-y, finger picking and slide seem to play around (avoid) the typical tonal benchmarks, and the bridge pickup never being used on the modern just seems to further these suspicions. Great playing and all but 🧐
Close but not the cigar. Nothing like the real paf! I owned many & I am sorry I sold them when I was younger. They clean up like nobody's business! Way to expensive to get a hold of today & you would have to know what you are doing so you don't get ripped off! I will say the mojo 59's are probably the best I've heard yet!
G. M. Maybe a slightly smaller cigar tho, if not the stoagie! Gotcha... But close enuff for me... I'll take it. & You're right, would be tuff & risky to find an origional set. Time is $'s, $'s is time. I trust your judgement on these, sounds like u've got some experience in this realm. But wow! These mojotone s are beautiful sounding. If not a bullseye, they're on the edge of it! So close, they could call it a wrap & celebrate. At the end of the day, either set is a big winner. . .
I don't know why the player played distorted slide guitar. The more distorted the amp is the less the difference between the pickup is evident. I like the traditional format where the player starts clean and moves to distorted.
So, the gold is NOT a true 59. Then, when he jumps from the goldtop to the traditional, you’ll notice he’s using the bridge pup on the goldie but uses both pups on the traditional immediately afterward. 🤷🏼♂️ Not sure if that was an oversight on his part but you can tell that there’s a big difference in tone. It’s not a true comparison, is it? I bought a set, but the only true test will be whether I like them once installed...
One of my pet peeves in pickup comparisons: using two different guitars sporting different pickups. The scientific approach should always have a baseline and one manipulated variable - the pickups themselves. One guitar, different pickups.
They don't sound like PAF's... but that may because they're in wet wood Gibsons - sounds so much soggier than a burst that has WAY more high end bell tone, clarinet mids smoothness AND clear woody snarl.
Ok, I'm mind fu$&ed here I have NEVER heard a closer or more awesome sounding pickup, pearly gates yeah there good, burst bucker 1 and 2 good, 57 classics good, these oh my God I can't believe what I'm hearing, I'm blown away, amazing 🌋
i can always count on mojotone!
One of your better demos, much more professional and clean straight into amp with good choices of playing and volume samples. BIG thumbs up!
Well done you guys!! Great comparison! That’s how you sell a pickup. Wow. I know what my next purchase is going to be...
Thank you.
Jer
They sound fantastic. Great playing too.

Yeah let’s go desolder some original PAF’s out of a vintage 50’s LP to film a your “real” A-B comparison.
The clone sounds nice but modern . A bit thinner than the real paf
I'd say your pickups are "splitting hairs" close! Great sounding PAF Clones!
Why did Mojotone discontinue this pup?
Is the only difference between these and the 59 Clone in the RC Alnico 2 vs the Alnico 4 in the 59 (and the aged cover option)?
Buehler?
I've been searching for a little while now for a set to pop up for sale somewhere, shame they're discontinued
Oh, and how is the goldtop ‘hard to date’? Isn’t it a ‘57early ‘58? No SN on headstock? No dates on any components (pots, caps)?
@@MrBluzhound the PAF pickups are hard to date not the guitar. They are not original to that particular Gold Top.
Dude, you know how to get “that sound”. Great comp-on, I like your traditional very much, original PAF have a bit less highs, a bit more midrange, but new pickups are more solid in good way.
That rolled down neck tone on the GT at 3.20 was amazing. Unfortunately you didn't recreate that on the Mojo neck. Everything else was superb.
very nice sounding pups !

How about the neck pickup in a Tele? How do you think that would go over?
A good PAF sounds like a single coil as far as dynamics are concerned when the vol pot is down. This is what you want to look for in PAF. And to like the core tone ofc
Yup.
one problem I consistently observe in mojotone pickups is that they aren't voiced for the original strings, i.e., pure nickel. They are wound dark to compensate for the modern high output steel strings.
Why didn’t you just use a set with covers? The covers attenuate high end. Baffling choice
Because it looks cool. Also high end is for p*ussies get a clue 😊

Mojotone bridge pickup not demo'd here....I use it mostly.womp womp

I used the bridge quite a bit in that video. Hope that helps! Thanks!
Fantastic Tones!
Sounds quite pleasant
Followed the link, they're all sold out unfortunately. Does anyone know if Mojotone will do another run of these?
At the moment we have intention to run these pickups again. However, anything is possible in the future. Thanks- Mojo Team
Was that "Helplessly Hoping" by Crosby, Stills & Nash for the final clean neck comparison?
Yes! First song I ever learned.
@@justincodyfox I thought so. I also like to play that tune on a paf'ish neck bucker, or on a Tele neck pickup. Happy Holidays!
Do you have these in 4 conductor?
I honestly don’t know which I like better. Can covers be installed?

Hi I am a bit confused : how can you compare pickups on 2 different guitars. As if a the wood made no difference.
Because the wood makes no difference. Wood is invisible to electromagnetic pickups.

the mojotone do have higher harmonic in their notes even though they aren't single coil
great sound
Listening with headphones
The gold top perfection
Mojo- much brighter
A frequency in there- hurting my ears

Yeah the switch must have jumped back to the middle. Sometimes a fresh switch will do that. I still had fun playing both!! Thanks for buying a set
How did these work out for you Butler Crow? Cheers
was the opening and closing black keys riff played on the premium historic guitar?
I believe I played that on the Goldtop actually.
One of my pet peeves in pickup comparisons: using two different guitars sporting different pickups. The scientific approach should always have a baseline and one manipulated variable - the pickups themselves. One guitar, different pickups.
The neck sounds boomy/woofy on the mojo tone compared to the balanced PAF.
What is this witchcraft!! I must upgrade my Epiphone inspired by Gibson 50s standard with these and some decent pots
When you want to hear hear how a pickup sounds... Always use a slide
