Not a chance and he even admits it himself. The hardest working and toughest but not the greatest. Often gave poor rides at the biggest meetings and compare his record to Walsh and Gerraghty in the best races.
The Greatest Jump jockey in history without a doubt, and there has been quite a few.A remarkable rider who was 20yrs top rider in succession.Tony had the knack to judge a race, win on horses that others couldn’t win on.A real champion of the sport.
The unusual thing about this man is not his drive longevity or talent (as vast as they are) its that , although he had all those things in abundance , he's retained a sense of humility that I've rarely if ever seen among those at the top of their profession.
AP is a true great and very humble The fact he doesn’t want to be called Sir makes him more worthy Doesn’t do any harm that he is from the same part of the world as me Simon you are killing it with these interviews and as a huge boxing fan, I thoroughly hope you het involved and make it better, as it is a bit of a mess really to put it kindly Great chat!
Another great interview. Will always disagree he was the greatest just because he road the most winners but his will to win, determination and strength of character are to be hugely admired, great interview again.
Interview top class. What makes a top jockey is small details like feel for the horse. Information they provide to trainer like ground conditions, dist a horse prefers, how to be ridden from behind, mid div, front run and the horse ability what type of race to run in. McCoy like Walsh, piggott, eddery brilliant at that as well as the drive. McCoy remarkable. V.v few mistakes. Also I remember watching a type of superstars program. A very young hollie Doyle so tiny remarkably beat top arsenal women's footballers on fitness tests like squats, running etc. Fitness Coachs couldn't believe what they were seeing and me also. You have to be really fit to handle racehorses. AP is a proper legend equally for his info he reports after a race as much as riding in it. Legend a word used to much in this case he is.
Och that was a grand wee conversation, AP is such a gentleman and seriously solid bloke... Simons phone book must be a who's who of who's who, can't wait for the next one
Indubitably, as a kindred Simon, I am veritably enamored by the magnificence of the podcast you host, and your astute inquisitiveness certainly leaves an indelible impression on the mind. Whilst it may be contended that the copious lexicon that we share may elude the comprehension of certain individuals, it is not within our purview to mollify the uninformed. Forsooth, we are here to impart knowledge and stimulate cogitation amongst the intellectually astute.
Northern Ireland- Less than 2 million people , world champions in snooker, boxing, golf, world player of the year in football, best jockey ever! regardless of whatever religious nonsense
Have zero interest in horse racing, so, Simon Jordan was the only reason I watched, however, it was a brilliant episode and AP seems like a genuinely humble but astonishing man
Dorians story is great but sadly bodybuilding is really still an underground sport to some degree and not really mainstream enough for something like this channel
Loving your new channel Simon, AP is a legend and you've done him justice in this interview...the only other sportsman I can compare him to is Valentino Rossi.
Greatest sportsman ever to operate in Britain, as tough as they come and a complete obsession to be the best. It’s been a privilege to watch his career.
A great interview with AP, Simon maybe you could try interview his old boss one of the greatest owners in the business John P McManus i think that would be an amazing interview
APM won so many races on average horses. He rode at courses that were not grade 1 level. Simon has to realise that the great jockey's have the skills, horsemanship, and iron will to get over the line first.
Great podcast. Annoying at the start because Simon kept interrupting! We all became fans of certain teams because of the FA cup final. 1979 I became a Gooner too! It is remarkable that AP is in one piece!
Am a big fan of Simon, generally. But let your guests talk more. Interrupt less. Loves the sound of his own voice a bit too much. Enjoying this series nonetheless.
Truly incredible, unique talent in national hunt jockeyhood. Complete tunnel vision and dedication to his craft. Quite predictably those character traits make him dull as dishwater on TV.
Questions need to be more concise Simon. Too much time spent talking about Palace and your own success. Will keep watching and hope this improves. Big fan of your work.
i understand simons point about the horse or the formula 1 car should get all the credit but as a life long formula 1 fan i can offer you abit more on that (not the horse racing) before formula 1 drivers get to formula 1 they have a long career of racing starting at karts when they are literally children, from there you HAVE TO PROVE you are quick before you get a sniff at a good kart/car going forward. Fast forward years, if you are good enough you may end up in formula 2 (main formula 1 support race) and in this series the cars are all stock meaning besides minor setup changes they are all THE SAME. So obviously beating your competitors in the same machinery is the best way to prove your talent and 99% of people who end up in formula 1 do well in this series or equivalent. Then you come to formula 1 where obviously some cars are better than others but then its absolutely no coincidence that the drivers who did the best in the support classes usually end up in the best cars... this isn't an accident where you can just put everything down to luck, its a result of proving your speed over your life time, beating people in the same cars and earning your position. Then when you get to formula 1.. it isn't just 1 driver in the best car.. its 2.. so why then do we get people dominating their teammates year in year out? (hamilton/schumacher) Its because they are not only quick over 1 lap like most f1 drivers.. the level of consistency is quite literally robotic, imagine driving a 60 lap race and every single lap you drive being on the limit and every lap being within a second of each other.. this is what separates the elites from the world class because some drivers just cant maintain it. Ayrton senna talked about driving unconsciously and being so at 1 with the car he no longer had to think, only the elite drivers can take themselves into this space and stay there. A good example of this would be hamilton vs rosberg.. rosberg beat lewis hamilton to the 2016 F1 title and this would be his only F1 title because he retired after that season. He said he retired because beating hamilton over just one season took too much out of him. It drained him mentally, physically, emotionally and he admitted that he couldn't summon that out of himself again. Meanwhile freaks of nature like hamilton, schumacher and now max can just do it week in week out, they are quite literally robots that are built different and the out of this world speed they produce comes so easy that it would blow the minds of mortals like us. Now i know this is a long one, but some people really really don't understand what it is to be successful in F1. but put incredibly simply... the best drivers will always end up in the best cars because they are the only ones who can take it to its potential.
The question of horse welfare is not the horse who is at a yard and well looked after , its the horses that have been breed that don't make it same in greyhound racing the amount that are put down is freighting.
AP is a living legend. Simple as that. The greatest NH jockey of all time and with a will to win that’s rarely seen. What a stupid question and theory from SJ about whether you can be a great sportsman aided by a horse for a jockey or a car for race drivers! What a complete numpty. It’s surely even harder to get everything right on a powerful horse running and jumping at 35 miles an hour with all the other factors to consider such as the ground conditions, pace, dodgy jumpers, other horses around you and fallers, rather than an individual sportsperson looking after himself or herself. Anything Palace related is almost irrelevant and boring to listen to in the context of this interview.
Simon can be a dick. Would Maradonna be known for greatness if he’d played at Arbroath his entire career? Of course great jockeys are great jockeys regardless of the horse they are on. They’ll always get the best of any horse they ride.
Glad this show isn't getting many views. Sad to see Simon take the betting money😢. Is it a show or an hour long William Hill ad? Sport has been royally ruined because of all that money
i love horse racing but all this whip cushion shit is a load of bs fundamentally it causes some sort of pain so stop saying it dont hurt coz it does facts
Greatest jockey in history. The sheer bloody mindedness to win and his understanding of horses is incredible
