What a fantastic interview. Thanks so much Simon.
As a welshman I'm thrilled we have a coach like Warren. He has really bought into Wales and even when he left in other interviews he was still using the expression WE when discussing Wales, even in the current tense.
    He never left :)

I'm a Scot, i'm 52 & have always been a massive All Blacks fan. I have the jersey. For a country with a population smaller than ours to have been so dominant & feared over the years is amazing. And i've never met or even seen an arrogant nasty Kiwi. You must be so proud to be one. I've never delved into how the rugby team have done it over the years but i'm guessing rugby is drilled into you from a young age, right?

When the Lions toured NZ in 2005, I was working at a bar in Wellington. We had had 15,000 Barmy Army cricket supporters here a year or so before. Before the Lions came it was (well I ) believed there was going to be 50,000 "Barmy Army" (sorry, but they were often complaining types!) coming again and I dreaded it. Well I was totally wrong on that, the Lions supporters weren't the England cricket supporters at all, far from it. They (the Welsh in particular) were just great people, just like us, loved their Rugby and down-to-earth people.. We were sad to see them go. I can see why Gats, an ex-Moo Loo would love Wales, and why Wales would love him. Great interview, great man, --- NZ represent!.

Great interview, some really interesting points around "Woke", not sure Simon was right about this in terms of progress / reset. Mental health is very important but Gats is 100% right, elite sport is a rarefied environment and is tough both physically and mentally. If you are not up to either element, you are not qualified to compete. The players need support and assistance but it has gone too far. The same can be said in business.

@Warren Garland - what makes a great coach is adaptability. Living in a woke world is not an issue (and yes it can go too far) but those who can adapt are smart. The fact that you can evolve to being a manager in a woke world speaks wonders to you humanity and leadership. Good leadership is being able to adapt - that is the stuff of wisdom.
P.S - the reason why the reference to “girls” is no longer acceptable is because it was used in a derogatory context back in the day. Understanding the power of words is key to adaptability. It is not a weakness (or BS).

I think it was a really interesting question how you asked about taking time out from Wales for the British Lions “How does that suit me?” For me, that’s the difference between being a great manager and being a great leader. Management would be selfish (stay here with me) Leadership would be, this is bigger than me, you go and live your dream. Denying him that would be wholly wrong.

Had a gents evening with Gatland so I know he speaks well generally.
A very silly comment & demonstrably false correlation between “woke” & “mental toughness” though. Jordan does nothing to correct him just nodding along like a gormless fool.
The literal definition of “woke” is “having or marked by an active awareness of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those involving the treatment of ethnic, racial, or sexual minorities.”
    Nothing about mental toughness.
And again, anyone proudly stoking these pathetic culture wars & declaring themselves anti-woke, do they really realise what that says about them? Specifically being pig ignorant &/ or racist.
Few would disagree that mental toughness is required in elite sport. It’s required to get through the challenges of life, let alone elite sport.
But people who suffer mental health episodes are often extraordinarily mentally tough people. The documentary of Ben Stokes is an incredible demonstration of that. An absolute beast, yet reduced to a shell of a man. But the beast returned. That’s real mental toughness, bouncing back from the lowest point you can reach.
Countless elite sportspeople that are the very definition of “mentally tough” have suffered from mental health issues.
And just to clarify again, “woke” has zero to do with mental toughness.

If you think that you're centre then you are probably slightly left with a few right wing opinions, or you are slightly right with a few left wing opinions. People who describe themselves as centre either don't know anything about politics or are uncomfortable in sharing their true beliefs. Either way it's a cop out and should be avoided.

I wish to f#ck that people would stop using the word 'woke' as some some kind of generic derogatory term for weakness or namby-pamby behaviour. Woke in its modern usage means being alert to, and concerned about, social injustice and discrimination. How the f#ck does caring about the wrongs of the world stop somebody being as tough as nails on a playing pitch??? Sorry about the language but I'm seriously pissed off with this sort of behaviour. I'm old enough to have seen how feminism was mocked and derided as just being about burning bras. I would expect better from a public figure like Warren Gatland.

I wish rugby had gone "woke" years ago! I love rugby and played it for years. I always had a big problem with this "We might fight, but we leave it all on the field and have a beer after" nonsense. Rugby was full of disgraceful behaviour back then. This "rugby respect" was complete smoke and mirrors. The British & Irish Lions disgraceful pre-mediated fight with Australia in 1989 and Rob Jones/Finlay Calder's assault on the brilliant Aussie scrum half - You call that a game steeped in respect? I know it has different problems now with big heavy impact players, but I certainly have no desire to ever see off the ball incidents and fights of old ever making a comeback. I'll have woke over that any day of the week.

I think you are mistaken, woke doesn't mean polite or soft, woke is a reference to a set of radical, far left beliefs that have become common in certain sections of society since 2014. The closest that rugby has got to being woke is the disgraceful kneeling during the 2021 lions tour or the WRU banning Delilah. I'm all for respect in the game but the last thing I want to see in rugby is politics, even if I agree with it and share the same views. But I especially wouldn't want to see radical left wing politics given lip service at the rugby. That would truly make it woke and would ruin the sport.

@@d.jparer5184 Thanks for reply. Yes, I am aware that woke is about ideas. But, is it a bad thing that coaches are no longer allowed to F and Blind at players? That shouting at someone in training to go back in and put on their high heels is now considered unacceptable? Similarly, what's wrong with insisting on calling roles "Chairperson" rather than "Chairman" or "Kit Manager" rather than "kit man" if it helps attracts more women to the game? Rugby (like football) no longer puts up with the bad attitude player. They guy who's a bad influence, poisons minds, or is a trouble maker. Similarly, it no longer wants the toxic coach. Surely all that's a good thing for everybody? I certainly don't ever want to see our sport become like another sport which is proudly the opposite of all this. Look at The UFC where their professional mouthpiece Dana White and the large roster of fighters happily swear non stop, call each other derogatory terms, and give brain-dead comments to interviewers which often involves telling whoever it is to "F-Off" if its a question they don't like to the loud acclaim of the audience.

@@JSL2000 it's a good thing if it works. If a coach doing that creates a toxic environment then he should be fired, if it works and they win then he should be given a raise. The high heel comment is still seen as acceptable by the majority of the population. Only woke people would have a problem with that and they are a vocal minority of the population. Yes we are not changing the English language because extremists have issues with it. Kit lady is a term that already exists and you can say you are the chair as a de-gendered way of saying chairman if you insist on that but chairman refers to both sexes anyway. Just because you want the game to be polite and welcoming doesn't mean we should adopt radical left wing talking points about language and gender.

@@d.jparer5184 I'm not looking for the loons to take over! I used to hate the woke crowd and thought Prince Harry had become a joke. But, sometimes within the messages of the woke element is a good 10%-15% which would actually do everyone the world of good. Nobodys calling for the term hooker to be banned in case it offends prostitutes! It's simply a desire to reign in some people who hide behind being a "Big personality". There is no hard left trying to take over etc. Remember years back we were all accused of being health and safety mad? Now we have outstanding health and safety. Those people were also called nutters and kill joys.

@@JSL2000 That's a reflection on how much power, for better or worse, the players have now. They can get coaches sacked if they don't like them. Literally zero to do with woke.
There's an interesitng convo to have about the topic that is, as usual, being ruined by people dragging politics in to something that has nothing to do with it.
Left and right wing players can get coaches sacked if they don't like them or how they are being talked to if they have enough influence. It's a bi-partisan issue, ha. And as the internet shows, being salty and sensitive is also bipartisan.
