megatron spent eons building him a throne of glass ( beating him up publicly and destroying his reputation to an extent ) so the decepticons would never respect him as a leader. And then when starscream finally got to use it, it shattered under his weight, destroying him. Then as insult to injury he was punished for it.
One thing to acknowledge is that Starscream at this point is 100% loyal to Megatron and only took over as leader after saving and focusing everything on reviving Megatron. Not only is he mentally and physically beaten before Megs attacks him, but he also lost support and respect from the Decepticons even after the Matrix of Leadership responded to him (not as much as Optimus or Hot Rod/Rodimus but still)
Everyone is the hero of their own story. And if Megatron had no virtues - courage, vision, work ethic, prioritization - he would be ineffectual and weak like Starscream, rather than the terror of his species.
It's the ambition, determination and intelligence, the iron will to change the world and the knowledge of how to attain his objectives, that makes him stand out from all other bots. He was tortured by a totalitarian pre-war system for being a dissenter: What did not kill him, made him stronger.
The music during that speech fits so well. Ironic considering it's from the Fall of Cybertron, yet Megatron's speech is used to have his Decepticons rise again.

I really hate this Megatron in a good way you know. Like he’s abusive and cruel and wants to just beat Starscream to ease his mental state, but seeing Starscream like this is just sad. He doesn’t want power he just wanted respect from the other decepticons. He saved Megatron from being killed by Optimus Prime and stole the Matrix of Leadership from him. This Starscream cared about Megatron and wanted his respect, yet even after saving him Megatron just wants to show Starscream he doesn’t care for respect and his loyalty he just wants to beat him for his amusement….The saddest part is The Matrix of Leadership actually responded to Starscream. Regardless the Decepticons ignored him.
Megatron is cruel however he is doing this solely for not only his satisfaction, but also for starscream. I believe megatron wants starscream to be disloyal and everything because starscream is a more effective soldier to him when he’s like this. If he ever gave starscream respect and love that would make starscream effectively weak he would no longer have reason to scum against others he wouldn’t work hard as he use to effectively starscream would be dead just like he is before megatron beats his ass.

Funny thing, it happened the exact other way. Megatron ended up picking up the autobot insignia, got a redemption story, while Starscream went neutral but ended up fucking up and ultimately in prison after a short while of ruling cybertron.

But outside IDW comics and in other TF continuities and shows, do you really think is the case every time? But what happens when shit hits the fan and Megs dies? If Megs has not planned for that eventuality then he truly is an idiotic leader, if he expects that the "strongest bot leads" and "leadership is taken, not given" policies of the Decepticons are going to work and determine the next leader, then that is a poorly planned line of succession. Not to mention, not that many would qualify for that. SS is actually be the most qualified out of them all, but every time when that happens, he is written to fail. Most would say that Shockwave would be a better leader, which would make sense. But because he is too detached from emotions most troops wouldn't want a leader they cannot relate to. And Soundwave has little to none true leadership material. He would work well as field commander but not full on army or nation leader. I guess that they keep purposelessly writing Megs to be this big of an idiot as a tyrant to not count in these scenarios, to show these as his egotistical flaws and to show how and why the bad guys loose in the end. It kinda sucks. The only time Megs has somewhat counted this scenario was in Armada. SS was his planned next in line and to be second in command. He even says it out loud in the JP version which is considered the definitive version and it's clear if you read in between lines and understand the characters. It sucks that this has not been repeated or even tried at after that. Also, what sucks that most people nowdays think that only one depiction or continuity is the default definition for all the characters in all the media. And then go on and gloss over the actual character of set characters and just keep on rehashing the same old stereotype. It's kinda insulting if you ask from me.

Sort of like a war between ideals

@@albertrex6851 While he does care about Screamer in that way and is pushing him to become his ideal successor, that doesn't mean he will ever let that happen or has any feelings of love towards him. The closest these two in this comic series could get is philia or even a small hint of storge but both are warped to an unhealthy degree.
@@Brian-zk2up In most TF depictions, that is the case. And so is in this comic and the old IDW comic run. His purpose is to keep Megs in top shape and to contribute to the Decepticon cause. But outside IDW comics and in other TF continuities and shows, do you really think is the case every time? But what happens when shit hits the fan and Megs dies? If Megs has not planned for that eventuality then he truly is an idiotic leader, if he expects that the "strongest bot leads" and "leadership is taken, not given" policies of the Decepticons are going to work and determine the next leader, then that is a poorly planned line of succession. Not to mention, not that many would qualify for that.
SS is actually be the most qualified out of them all, but every time when that happens, he is written to fail. Most would say that Shockwave would be a better leader, which would make sense. But because he is too detached from emotions most troops wouldn't want a leader they cannot relate to. And Soundwave has little to none true leadership material. He would work well as field commander but not full on army or nation leader.
I guess that they keep purposelessly writing Megs to be this big of an idiot as a tyrant to not count in these scenarios, to show these as his egotistical flaws and to show how and why the bad guys loose in the end. It kinda sucks. The only time Megs has somewhat counted this scenario was in Armada. SS was his planned next in line and to be second in command. He even says it out loud in the JP version which is considered the definitive version and it's clear if you read in between lines and understand the characters. It sucks that this has not been repeated or even tried at after that.
Also, what sucks that most people nowdays think that only one depiction or continuity is the default definition for all the characters in all the media. And then go on and gloss over the actual character of set characters and just keep on rehashing the same old stereotype. It's kinda insulting if you ask from me.

Haha it wasn’t meant to be sinister 😅 I wanted to paint it in such a way that it was majestic and grand, as Megatron knew it was what he needed to do to reignite Starscream’s hunger for power and self preservation, all the while, I was also using emotional scores here and there in the sequence so we could see from starscream’s eyes as well. Sort of like a war between ideals
