    Quick question. How do I negotiate when I don't know anyone in the field and how much they make/did make at the beginning?

    Hi MJ, current matriculant here.. I was wondering what your take on AP ('advanced programme') Maths is?
    Do you think that it's very helpful in first year calculus and algebra? And what about the statistics and probability covered? Did you find it very similar to first year stats at varisty?
    Sorry for bombarding you with questions, just wondering about what lays ahead for me next year 😁 Thanks. Keep up the good work 👍

      AP maths is good, but our lecturer was of the opinion that at school they teach us wrong. So don’t worry about it too much as you will cover it again at university. This is especially the case with financial maths and stats. Doing calculus and algebra is beneficial though

      Hi I am currently a first year actuarial science student at uct and I do advice you take ap maths if you have the option to, it'll give you a good head start for your first year maths course as you will have a good introduction to calculus. I personally didn't do ap maths as my school didn't offer it. though I am coping with the maths course it takes a lot of practice and hard work and I find that my peers who did ap maths in high school grasp the concepts much more easier and feel less pressure but regardless if you work hard you'll still succeed its just nice to be a bit familiar with calculus.

      @@assandrao as a MAM1000 student, I second this, AP math fundamentals allow an easier grasp on the abstract concepts - I say this having done nothing more than NSC pure math but having friends with different math backgrounds.

    What are Product Development actuaries and what do they do?Apart from developing products

      It’s the creative side of actuaries. They design financial contracts in such a way that value is created for both the issuer and the purchaser. Most commonly insurance contracts and what features to include and how to set the various parameters such as excess, benefits, premiums, etc

    Hi Mj, sorry I know this doesn't have anything to do with the video but I wanted to know if it is still possible to study actuarial science by majoring in maths and statistics rather than studying actuarial science itself, since UKZN offers maths and statistics only, any suggestions?

    • @MJtheFellowActuary
      @MJtheFellowActuary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s possible to first do an undergraduate where you major in maths and then write all the exams on your own. But much better to do a dedicated degree to Actuarial Science that earns you exemptions from the Society. This will help you to qualify quicker. Wits, Tuks, UCT, Stellies, offer this

      In South Africa it is far better to study actuarial science. Other countries differ

      There is other material out there, Actex is good for the American exams and Acted is good for the British exams. And there are a few good independent textbooks for each of the subjects

    Hi MJ, any thoughts on the new world order and the mark of the beast?

    • @MJtheFellowActuary
      @MJtheFellowActuary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you read that one cannot trade without the mark of the beast and that the number 666 was linked to a tax in the Old Testament, it does kinda sound like a financial thing. But the thing with Revelations is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways that one should be cautious about drawing conclusions from interpretations
