    I love your lessons they are well thought out and you never assume that viewer already knows something you have mastered and neglect to show the actual step by step important parts. Bravo! I always look forward to the next video.

    I was searching on how to start playing fingerstyle,and all I found were silly PIMA patterns with no real melody,I mean its all cool but it wasnt what I was looking for. They didnt improve anything,especially not my thumb. But this...this is gold. I spent 10 minutes doing the method 2 and I can already see the progress. Gonna practice this every morning before work! Thanks a lot man. You made a shitty guitarist happy! :D

      +Hats I struggled for years with my finger picking until I learned fingerstyle ukulele techniques. It turned out that guitar instructors were mostly sticking to an old, classical teaching script. Meanwhile Uke players were much less strict, and explained their techniques in simpler terms. I believe in developing a base of common patterns played consistently, from there you can variate it any way you wish. Keep up the practice!

    Or 5,2,4,3 for outside/inside pattern.

    I like your teaching style. Is there a reason you leave the pinky free? I have developed a habit of not anchoring the pinky and utilizing it on the high E string which leaves the thumb to only focus on the low E and A. I am willing to retrain my brain if it is necessary to advance my skill level but if it's not...

      Rob has a lesson on "Green, Green Rocky Road" by DVR on his channel....do a search. I know because it's the first real fingerpicking song I've learned. By "real" I mean other than "Freight Train" lol. If he can teach a ham handed klutz like me, he can teach anyone!

  • @DavidLaFerney
    @DavidLaFerney 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great lesson. I've read that Merle Travis actually only used his thumb and forefinger though.
    There's an even easier pattern that I never see taught. Alternating base with the thumb and alternating the second and first strings - which I do with my pointer. It's easier, but it sounds good in a lot of songs. Dust in the wind is a great simple workout that covers all the roots with simple chords and straight 4/4 time.
    What is a good pattern for 3/4 or 6/8 songs?
    Again - thanks for all the great lessons.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, Merle and also Doc Watson used thumb and index primarily, but I personally don’t recommend it. Actually, Doc had expressed that he found the technique somewhat limiting as well.

    Been playing for years but trying to widen my knowledge and your videos are awesome for that so thanks! Question: how do you do these patterns for the D chord where the root moves to the D sting?

    • @willardwort5408
      @willardwort5408 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      D string is the root but it sounds good with the A too

    • @lalzangamgangte6018
      @lalzangamgangte6018 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      me too im so confused about the root notes in D of the first finger picking pattern

    • @chillymeatball
      @chillymeatball 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lalzangamgangte6018 I was taught that the D chord, thumb starts on (root) D string (4th) and bounces to the A string (5th). It works because A is in the chord D, but you still have to still have to start on the root. So your thumb is doing basically the the same movement as the C chord but you start on the d string for the first beat and move it up to the A for the second beat. Hope this helps.

    • @kedarpathare9323
      @kedarpathare9323 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we play second fret of low E string with thumb, that gives us F# note which is part of D major chord. I think we can use that as root note. Right? 🤔

    Thank you and you are an excelent instructor. Very "to the point" so to speak. But most pattern lessons (not only yours) lack the songs that can be played with them, otherwise it is just a useless techique. Can you name / reference any songs or even demo them for each pattern next time you do a techique lesson (Actually you referenced one of them for travis picking pattern). That would be awesome. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you’re enjoying my teaching style. I’d recommend you get each pattern down, then dig into my fingerstyle playlist and tackle songs like “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me,” and “Helplessly Hoping.” Aside from learning songs, I really hope that you’ll use the techniques I’ve taught here to create your own original music, that’s the true benefit of learning common techniques outside of the context of a specific song. Have fun!

    No fingernails on my picking hand. So it sounds muted. Any suggestions ?

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +stan hankins I also have no fingernails. That muted sound seems to go away once you get the muscle memory, causing you to spend less time making contact with the string. In addition, the fingertips will harden, resulting in a brighter tone. I've never been able to bring myself to growing my nails out, it's a pretty creepy look haha.
