Thank you very much for making this first impressions video. I am Carlos Diaz the author of the game. It is a game that you have to discover little by little to enjoy it. I recommend that you start playing the short scenario of 4 turns (from the 4th to the 7th) because in the second part of the game there is less chrome. My intention was to make a game for the veterans of the series by offering additional new things.

I was really excited and looking forward to this game. I always wanted a 4 or 6 player Here I Stand’ish’ game without the political mechanics of the Pap/Prot, and that plays in 6ish hours. This was close but as I researched the game I realized it was just too complex for me. Im glad you guys had a good time with it and I hope the game does well and is successful first the designer. I agree with Grant, the cover and production is fantastic. My problems with it are all the rule exceptions and walls of text. My game group have gotten Here I Stand down to 4 or 5 hours, and can play Virgin Queen in 6 or 7. We can't even get this to the table yet, haha. It's just too much chrome for us, but I hope to digest it all eventually.
My local group of dedicated wargamers, GMT testers, asl veterans gave this a try several times and they died on chrome hill. These are literally wargame designers and industry vets, and after a few long game sessions and several long email threads, the consensus wasn't good. This one needed a stronger hand in editing is all I can gather. I had high hopes for a streamlined faster 4p game set on the Virgin queen framework.. This smacks of kitchen sink design that sinks under its own weight. Really wanted to love it.. We play HiS and VQ yearly.
Good commentary. I've been reading the rules and pushing stuff around. It looks to me that Tanto Monta represents the first phase of consolidation into proto-national states. Historically a very messy, brutal, and complex process. Here I Stand and Virgin Queen represent the follow-on phases of this transformation. I feel that each of the games handles the major issues of their respective eras very well. I like complexity and chrome so thumbs up from me so far.

You guys are so nice, I never see you being harsh in any game review. I'd like to see you being bluntly honest at times. Would you please make it clear whether you are promoting or reviewing the games you get?... Thanks.
Surely "bluntly honest" includes being respectful of the design and the efforts of the creator/s, as well as providing nuance in respect to what the game is trying to do. It's difficult to see how those efforts indicate that a game is being "promoted".
One of the reasons some of us turn to The Players Aid is because it doesn't have the invective and nastiness one often find elsewhere, and because the reactions here are genuine.
Have you guys played Napoleonic Wars? It had minor countries, fortified spaces, event/operations cards, Combat cards, Response cards, Mandatory events, etc four years before Here I Stand.
Nice review, not sure about picking this game up, or not. Love Here I stand but haven't played Virgin Queen, and the complexity of this game is a concern. Tanto Monta will most likely become a Grail game in the future. When it sells out, I highly doubt it will get a reprint for many years and the game will be very difficult to find in the future for a reasonable price.
I don't understand why this game gets so much hate. This is the first one in the series I purchased. I really enjoyed it. It made me excited to get Here I i stand and Virgin Queen

I don’t have enough players that are into these sorts of games. I play lots of war games but when it comes to this complexity or amount of time needed, just about everyone I know refuses to play. Is it remotely possible to play with two players? I’d take half the factions and my other player would take the other half?
Does Genesis, Successors, Pax Romana, Virgin Queen, Here I Stand, and Tanto Monta share the same (or very similar) base rule set?
They seem to be extremely similar, with varying levels of chrome.
No. Virgin Queen, Here I Stand, Tanto Monta do. Successors is very different, it's a bit more like multiplayer Washington's War. Genesis is a more strict civ building game with combat, and we've not played Pax Romana yet, so hard to say on that one.
I'd try and play to be polite but would be utterly useless at a game like that.
