This is a great informational video. I see this misconception that "wrestling/nibbling =aggression" a lot with novice pigeon keepers. Pigeons are prey animals, they will always try to flee if they feel threatened and they don't hate you if they tousle with your hand. Thank you for sharing this!
as someone who got wingslapped on my head numerous times I can confirm this. I see enough pigeons with aggressive behaviour that is basically RUH'ing at me (guttural, not like this in the video) and flying away when I come to close. And that aggressive behaviour is actually only a defense mechanism to warn you not to come to close. And that's just the behaviour towards other species that might be able to harm them.
I feel like this is the case with a lot of animals - TONS of animals have "play biting", like, probably more than not realistically.. Cats, dogs, heck I think even rats do this sort of thing. Animals do *NOT* have hands, so mouths are just like.. yeah.
@@maxwell_edison It's true. My cat would often nibble my hand and I used to get real pissed at her and rip my hand away, which she'd hiss about, and bop her on the head. I kept wondering why SHE was mad at ME. Well, turns out that's just little affectionate nips, after research. So now I basically ignore it as best I can and let her do it if she wants to.
"you're literally a giant, so he has to try very hard to impress you" something about the idea of this pigeon just thinking he has a wife that's probably like, 50x his own body mass and everything's totally fine and normal with that is hilarious, and also very cute
Whats even funnier is when a pigeon bonds to a human, even if they go on to bond with another pigeon in the future they still might try to woo a person. They really like us thanks to their domestication
I've always figured that if the birb was actually aggressively attacking you, there'd be no actual doubt to be had. The pecks and bites would be strong enough to inflict actual pain and strong enough to draw blood with wounds.
Pigeons beaks are not made for pecking they are used to root around for bugs, even sparrows and finches who have more peck oriented beaks can't even break the skin.
Nah, their beaks and claws are pretty weak, haven't you ever picked up a wild pigeon/dove? Those animals are terrified for their lives and they can't even scratch your skin (when they don't just freeze in terror).
I know someone else said it, but the thought that this pigeon is trying to woo and impress someone who's foot alone is probably as big as he is and weighs just as much is absurdly adorable. I mean he probably weighs what, MAYBE 1lb? 2lbs at most? The average person is easily almost 100x his size is mass, and he's trying so hard to impress you! That is such a precious birb!
My old man JonJon was the sweetest, most humble and gentle boy out there. He never did driving behaviour, never pecked, just coohed at me for attention or to come to bed. He was a rescued feral with club foot and internal parasites. He was also a bit senile. My partner and I decided to keep him as he wouldn't have lived long on the streets, he was sitting under a table by himself as it started to rain. He must have been a fairly dominant pidge in his day because he was huge with big crusty ceres. He decided I was his mate but it seems like he decided he didn't have to prove himself and could just bask in all the love and attention in his retirement
You will see him again someday, you cared for him in his old age and ailment. A bond like that doesn't end with death its spiritual, don't ever doubt that!
You can tell he is being friendly by his pigeon growls. They make that sound when they wanna court a female... If a pigeon is legit aggressive he will not bite... He will peck and slap you with his wings.

i've heard that Pigeons can purr (Or do something purr-ish). I haven't really looked into that though, So i don't know the ins and outs and could be wrong. But some people are saying that they can.
Very true. I can tell actual pigeon sass when I see it (usually would occur when I'm handfed them; some of males would fight for the food, and when I put my fingers near them to deter the aggressive ones, they'll turn on me. More humourous than bothersome though). :)
I've recently rescued a male pigeon, and I was actually wondering why he had been doing that, I wasn't sure if it was normal but it warms my heart he's trying to "impress me" 😭❤ Normally after he does it my bf and i tell him he's "a good boy"
My female pigeon does this too, all the time. I love it. It's adorable. Unfortunately, I cannot cuddle or pet her much, as everytime we have a proper petting session, she lays an egg or two. And she's a bit older now, so it's straining on her to lay multiple eggs.
You could try limiting the petting to the neck and head and slightly cutting back on the sunlight she sees to mimic the sunlight hours of the winter months. Thats what you do for parrots at least. That is a huge reason why I've always stuck with male birds myself
For some reason wood pigeons have chosen a telephone line outside my window as a place to mate, so I get to see their entire procedure regularly. They are surprisingly affectionate they chase each other up and down 'kissing' and nuzzling. When it comes down to business they are very quick, there is lots of flapping then he usually flies off immediately and leaves the female looking disappointed. It does not help the line is too wobbly they should use a more stable tree branch.
it really just comes down to reading their body language, like the twitchy wing for example is one common thing people mistake because it can mean 1 of 2 things 1) its scared of you or 2) its just happy, and its a happy wing twitch, pretty easy to tell if its a happy wing twitch cause theyll do there little dance that yours does, starting nesting behavior after the bird knows youre impressed
the totality of expression/body language/speech&sound/situational context can tell you more dependably what the animal is feeling. makes sense that if a bird is nibbling at you and dancing around without harming you that it is probably playing or something. one of my dogs “bites” my forearms or hands very very gently when he gets super excited. if he ever chomps too much then i just pretend to whimper or cry and he immediately stops and tries to kiss me 😂😂❤❤ i love animals.
I love pigeons. A lot of people give them a bad rap because they think they’re super dirty and unhygienic (which isn’t really the case). As a kid I remember going to the town pavilion on multiple occasions with my cousin, where she’d buy some bird seed and tell me to throw it in the air. About 75-100 pigeons came flocking down. She told me to hold some seed in my hands and one flew up and started eating it, where she would come up behind it, grab it, then let me pet and hold them
see, i go to my town on occasion. and a few of those times, ive had some stuff to give the pigeons there, theyll come flooding down and land on me. im a wheelchair user and im totally fine with it, tons of them would just sit on my lap, perch on my wheelchair and just enjoy the seeds and whatnot. it was really cute. one time there was a brown pigeon and they had a really bad eye. my parents didnt let me clean it and the poor thing just refused to leave me. (im 20 by the way) so i hope thst pigeons doing okay, miss the lil guy.
I've never even thought of owning a pigeon yet I clicked the video anyway, very fascinating that this is how they behave and think. Might have to consider getting one in the future! Thank you
If you do, I'm not sure if this applies to females but if you do get a male and he starts doing that you just wrestle him until he is tired and then "submit" by just laying your hand down while nodding your head or hand. He should get the hint at some point that your impressed and calm down
Very cat-like behavior, especially (though not exclusive) to males. I still have scars on my forearm, from when my boys Seti and Grendel, would grab ahold, and lay-in with the biting and kicking. The biting isn't too bad, but the kicking/raking with their back claws can smart. Very cute little fella you have!! 😺
I dont have a pet pigeon but Ive always loved them and this has DELIGHTED me. he just wants to impress his giant spouce, dangit. also, the lil wing flaps are adorableeee
I have one that doesn’t do any courtship behavior. He just bites. He’s got an owl beak so it can hurt. It started when he was the only bird that I keep inside. He was very affectionate. Then I brought 2 squeakers inside and he became very protective of them. So I put him in the loft with the other birds and kept one of the squeakers as my house bird.
It’s a little like a cat’s playing nips. No harm intended, just a bit of… culture shock? Species shock? He’s an adorable birb and I love his lil foot feathers!
I haven't seen the biting [among urban pidgeons (not pets)] before. But those pidgeon sounds plus the little twirl he makes is very common mating/nesting behaviour to see, especially in spring. Most of the time, i've seen one or more males that were feeding near a female get very alert and do those twirls while following her everywhere. The female pidgeon usually got tired of the harrassement and flew away, while the male either followed her or stood confused for a moment before proceeding to keep eating crumbs.
this is the cutest video i've ever seen omg. he sounds so contented getting pats from you. Thank you for posting this, this makes my heart so damn happy lol
I am taking a wild guess here. But if a pigeon (or any animal) is truly being agressive, it'll stand their ground. Or even go on the offensive to make it clear you're not welcome. Unlike this pigeon which is clearly pacing back and forth.
This can apply to multiple taxonomic families of birds which now reside with humans as "pets," actually. 👍 An example? Male (pet) ducks also do this, it's a way to get your attention. It really is about undivided attention. ❤
This behaviour is common among bonded birds, but birds who don't form a bond as easily such as budgies are just being mean when they bite. Usually the birds that talk are more inclined to communicate with their feathers to get affection, or their voice. Pigeons talk mostly by touch and some sounds
My dad kept racing pigeons and i looked after them. A joy!❤ he is very bonded to you...doing the display behaviour😊 and cooing like the male does to his wifey)😊
Pigeons are very affectionate birds. They have very subtle body languages. They dance and sing for their mate a lot, putting a lot of work into their relationship also into raising the chicks. Their beaks aren't there for strength. Pigeon beak is nowhere as strong as any finches or parrots who were evolved to Crack seeds. They have thin gentle beaks. And their bite is barely any pressure 🙂
This makes perfect sense to me. I'm a happy nested man and my wife and I make little jabs at each other. A casual observer would think we're annoyed, but it's one of the layers of our intimacy and I love it.
Very easy to tell- but then, i live in a city where i -often- always see pidgeons. So i can tell its not, its a silly cute dance. I appear more charmed by it than the females themselves xD
Aww he sounds so happy! Don't know why I was recommended this but obviously YT was listening yesterday, I was having lunch outdoors with my son and the wild white pigeons were eating from my hands ❤ I said I wanted to get pigeons at our house! Your boy is beautiful! 🐦 ❤
I’m very glad this video was recommended to me one day before Zfrank posted his video on pigeon and male pigeon behavior. I felt like I already had insight into what they would talk about.
Lol cute, my cat does something similar-ish. She'll "attack and bite" people's legs (and this morning startled my poor chihuahua into yelping by nipping his belly) but it's affection and not play or attack. The difference is the gentleness - just barely enough pressure to know she put teeth on you, but not enough to even indent the skin. Startling, tho, TBH. Poor pup was just laying there on his back and she was like NIPNIP BISH. :'D I had no idea pidgeons did this

horny in a pg way 😂
don’t tell me i’m wrong
Man- i love how he sounds like is purring when you caressed his head
Very true. I have experienced the same and noticed the pigeon only wanted to get in contact with me. 🕊️💙🥰
What a cute fluffy birb.
Pigeon wing twitches are like dogs' tail wagging. It shows contentment and happiness.
😮💨🥹🥹🥹that’s soooooooo adorable
They're such adorable little feather fluffs!
I think the short wiggles with his wings also showing that he is happy. That's a behavior you can observe on many birds.
And their bite is barely any pressure 🙂
babies
pigeons look like little sweeties
I was expecting a plot twist but this is actually wholesome.
Is he wearing a vest? His style already sold me.
i didn't know i needed this cuteness in my life today but thank you
Pidgy goes all-in on rizzin' up the giantess.
God that's so cute.. Trying to work so hard to impress you by biting you, and then snuggling up when he knows you're impressed
It always amazes me how even birds like the head pats and scritches.
oh my god he's such a 'fluffy' boy what I didnt even know the feathers could look like that
pigeons can have long hair 😅🤪
he’s a hippie
bellbottom feathers
This makes perfect sense to me. I'm a happy nested man and my wife and I make little jabs at each other. A casual observer would think we're annoyed, but it's one of the layers of our intimacy and I love it.
Very easy to tell- but then, i live in a city where i -often- always see pidgeons.
So i can tell its not, its a silly cute dance. I appear more charmed by it than the females themselves xD
a pigeon could look at me sideways and i would fall in love
“As you can see he’s a nice happiness man now” I love this so much 💖🌸🌱
What a beautiful pigeon! I had no idea some looked like that lol. If I ever get a pigeon I’ll definitely make sure to remember about their behavior
Oh you should absolutely look up "silly looking pigeons". They come in such a wide variety of looks.
@@valeries9297 Oh alright I’ll go see 👍
Aww he sounds so happy! Don't know why I was recommended this but obviously YT was listening yesterday, I was having lunch outdoors with my son and the wild white pigeons were eating from my hands ❤ I said I wanted to get pigeons at our house! Your boy is beautiful! 🐦 ❤
This pigeon: man that's a huge lady bird! She's so pretty 🤩 and she likes me! i better bring my best !
I do not own a pidgeon, but I have taken all this information to heart and will now randomly remember it while sitting at the dinner table
So adorable mind! What a cute pigeon! Like his fluffy feet! I absolutely love pigeons haha!
TH-cam algorithm recommending me this channel is probably best thing it did in years
He’s a happy little baby. Look at him dance to show appreciation.
I’m very glad this video was recommended to me one day before Zfrank posted his video on pigeon and male pigeon behavior. I felt like I already had insight into what they would talk about.
Little guy is just aggressively happy. Hehe
That is literally the cutest pigeon I‘ve ever seen
Lol cute, my cat does something similar-ish. She'll "attack and bite" people's legs (and this morning startled my poor chihuahua into yelping by nipping his belly) but it's affection and not play or attack. The difference is the gentleness - just barely enough pressure to know she put teeth on you, but not enough to even indent the skin. Startling, tho, TBH. Poor pup was just laying there on his back and she was like NIPNIP BISH.
:'D I had no idea pidgeons did this
There's a pigeon couple that live on my garden shed and he has to make sure his girl is very impressed, very loudly, very often...
My pigeon is trying to impress my dog…
Love his proud little struts and wing flaps and growls, so impressive and handsome ❤
