Pleats That Pop - Adding Contrast Color To Inverted Pleats

  • This week we take a look at using the methods we've been practicing and adapting them to the inverted pleat design element.
An inverted pleat is a pleat formed by bringing two folded edges toward or to a center point on the outside of the material to form a box pleat on the inside. The design features a repeating inverted pleat element along the entire skirt.
You can use the machine method (with the tape marking and the pin folding) to make these pleats, you just need to remember that each pleat will fold in the opposite direction - one under - one over, repeating.
In the video, I demonstrate how to splice apart a pleated design to add contrasting interest. For the example project in the video, I am using the skirt portion of the Cosplay Day Dress pattern. I've simply sewn the waistband pieces together along the top seamline to create a standalone skirt. Note - The design of the pattern has a dropped waist, so the finished skirt sits at the hips (not the waist.) I show two examples - the first uses just one accent fabric insertion, the second uses a contrasting fabric for the entire series of pleats.

I never made cheerleading outfits for my grand daughter's doll because of fear of alternating color pleats! thanks for showing exactly how to place the panels and use your pattern, which can be confusing for beginners for sure!

Interesting method. I’ve done these pleats by pinning everything on my ironing board scorching my fingers as I go

This is a great STASH BUSTER!! You could do the under/ contrasting fabric with all sorts of coordinating scrap fabrics! And bonus if you use a relative's old clothes as the coordinating contrasting fabric!
Sewing the skirt itself is just like piecing together a quilt, then adding pleats.
Now I want to buy this pattern!

The asymmetric polka dot contrast is really sharp, and clever.

Nice to know the difference between all the pleats you can make - love the colors for cheerleading.

I’ve not attempted inverted pleats, but they’re really cute and you make it look achievable.

I love the look of these inverted pleats with the coordinating fabric. It will be fun to go through my fabric stash to find the perfect coordinating fabric .

I had no idea this was how these multi-color pleats are created. Cool!

I always wondered how to create this design on skirts. You make it look so easy and now that you have also shown how to calculate how wide each fabric is needed (depending on the pleat sizes) I definitely want to try this method.

I have not made a cheerleading outfit with alternating colour pleats but I like the look of the black & white inside the red. Very striking. The template is a great idea.

Oh my goodness so adorable. I will definitely be trying this. I have made cheerleader outfits for my boss's twins but not with pleats. That red and black is adorable.
