Thanks for sharing your knowledge It boosted my mind After 8 years of break today i sew my daughters skirt I measured my waist .... then divided the waist into box pleats i wanted(6) I cut my waist band(thin plastic wrapping sheet)size into 6 equal pieces I placed on the fabric ..... then folded the pleats ... ❤
I'm excited! Civil war is my favorite. Not only do I love the fashion, but I want to write a book set in the general time frame (1857 to 1866 specifically). I've spent hours pouring over the Godey's Lady's book, looking for sewing and cultural tidbits. It has been my favorite source by far.
Thank you for sharing your technique! I did many boxpleats in my sewing life but I never thought about pinning them on top of each other 😄. I definitely have new ideas for future projects.
I love the sound of the fabric!! ARGH!! I totally hate when I'm sewing something and I miss the edge, or miss a section! This looks fantastic. This isn't just regular box pleats. These are multi-layer, this is what I need for a skirt that has been UFO'd for almost 15 years because I would look at these crazy diagrams for multi-layered pleats, and I could do one, maybe, and it was ALL CRAP! Thank you for this! I recently found a tie for my husband that matches this particular UFO. I think this skirt will be moved up in the pile. Stay well! And Merry Christmas!
If each pleat is 1/8th of the skirt, then it's 1/8th of your waist! This works irrelevant of how full the skirt is because there's so much fabric in it. Hope this helps ☺️
I am not an expert of any kind but I think 🤔 You mark the 8 parts in your fabric as she did, then each one of those will be the center on one big pleat. Create those pleats taking the fabric to meet the pin that you mark as center. The fabric between each big pleat needs to be pleated under the big ones. At the end you will be left with 8 4 and 1/8 pleats that make your 33 inches waist. Hope this help.
I keep coming back to this video because I have never seen pleats as neat and beautiful as in your skirt. It would be incredible to see it in person because even through video they are the best looking pleats on TH-cam period. There are many "historical" costume channels with some of the worse sewing techniques and knowledge and use the "period accurate method" as an excuse to cover their very obvious lack of training in sewing or design. I have no clue what your background or training is, but all my compliments to because this skirt is impeccable and the pleats are perfection. Pleats are so difficult even for seasoned fashion designers but you make it look effortless. Happy new year.
Thank you! That is very encouraging feedback. I definitely agree with you... historical accuracy shouldn't be an accuse for bad skills. I'm very big on sewing with neat and tidy practices, which makes a hug difference! Learning to make quilts helped tremendously in making sure everything was square. Happy new year to you as well!
I'm not the original person who asked but perhaps take a short video ( would not have to be longer then 5 secs) and just post it to your TH-cam account. Just a suggestion as someone who loves to see others creations.
Looks amazing. The amount of fabric needed, though! I could totally see this as part of a wedding ensemble. Maybe with embroidery or something sparkly running down the midst of the pleats.
There is a behind the scenes Christian dior video where they create a plissé dress by hand stitching down the pleats. I was wondering if you could explain how pleats can be stitched down by hand and what type of stitch should be used.
Trims are done first after the hem, not last. Your four panels are flat, they are not yet in a circle, your hem is complete, now you do trims, then you put your skirt into a circle and pleat it. This is so you do not have to angle the trims, they will be all at the same length on the skirt when it is finished.
Great explanation! Now I can tackle those scary demons scaring me away from that beautiful fabric, I cannot wait to make this skirt! Liked and subscribed😊
I can't stop watching and re-watching this video over and over again. One question - what kind of fabric is it? Is there a name for this heavier kind of silk with stripes woven into it? I would love to buy something similar but have no idea what to search for. Totally intending to do a similar dress. Thank you for the inspiration and tutorial.
So glad you are enjoying this video! 🙂 good question! I bought this material at an upholstery store as %100 silk taffeta. It didn’t have an particular label in it as it was an abandoned store that the building owners were trying to unload all the fabric. Pretty amazing! I wish you well in making this dress!
Hi, Talorette: pleating the skirt off the square as you talked about in your video is absolutely historically accurate. I have made more than one civil war skirt this way and worn it to many civil war musters.
You made this with 5 yards of fabric, but can I make it with less and create less pleats so it's not so full? I'm wanting to create something like this for my wedding dress.
Hi, beautiful ❤️. But could you please show how to do the 2 nd box pleat next to first? First box itself you have done thrice. After how much inch I should start making the 2 nd box? Understood how did you do pleat for the first box.
Good question! Perhaps I could do another video on how to do the measurements. I don't do exact measurements, I like to divide the skirt up and the fold them according to my size.
I'm not sure, but I think this formula can be used: Your waist between 8 (or de number of plates you are using), then you take this measure and multiple it for 56 (you need 3 plates for each side of each 1/8 plus the center one, so in total we will use 7x8 pieces; sorry English isn't my lenguaje). Don't forget add sewing allowance. I'll try this formula in a 1/4 scale, and if I'm wrong, I'll come to say it. And, she only decides first how many fabric wants into her skirt and then she makes a reverse formula to fit all the fabric into her waist measurement, or something like that hahaha it's also a great method.
hello im an amateur tailor..i stitched a skirt for my daughter with this tutorial and it came out really pretty..thank u so much for sharing the detailed tutorial🥰🥰. now im trying to stitch a hoop skirt for her. is thr a tutorial on how to make hoop skirt? i couldn't find it. could you help me with roughly how much boning i would need for a regular hoop skirt? thanks in advance.
When you mentioned about the "natural waist", I don't know if this is the same, but my mom always told me to measure at my bellybutton. How many layers did you end up doing? It looks like it would be HEAVY.
Excellent question! Your belly button is not your natural waist. What every size chart is asking for in your waist or natural waist measurement is your measurement just below your last rib. I have a video on how I do my measurements, but this one is the most misunderstood measurement! I can't quite remember how many layers this dress is, but this skirt is made of one fabric layer. petticoats go underneath if they are desired by the wearer. :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge

If you add a Stay Stitch to your plates you will eliminate missing layers when you go to add your waistband
Wow. This is a stunning skirt. Absolutely beautiful.

Those crispy pleats make me so happy! Thank you for this video, it’s gorgeous!
Thank you and you’re welcome! 🙂
This is so lovely! I don't usually see pleats done in this style. 😊
This is a beautiful skirt! Can you explain the math to figure out based on your waist size, how wide each pleat should be?
If each pleat is 1/8th of the skirt, then it's 1/8th of your waist! This works irrelevant of how full the skirt is because there's so much fabric in it. Hope this helps ☺️
I still don't get it.... Because my waist is another size. Its i think 33 inch. Will this fit then if i do it like in the Video? I love your Videos!!!
I believe you divide your waist of 33 by 8, that is 4.125. Meaning 4 and 1/8. That is the measure of each pleat
But how do you then know how long your fabric needs to be to fit your waist with 4 inch pleats?
I am not an expert of any kind but I think 🤔 You mark the 8 parts in your fabric as she did, then each one of those will be the center on one big pleat. This is the most beautiful skirt ever. I need to make one!
Man I wanted to see you fold that nicely with all that mess behind it. Bravo!
My mind is so muddled with how you did that. I’m so I’m awe of your skills
Thank you 🙂
What beautiful fabric handling! I adore your hand sewing the waistband!
The box pleats look great on a long skirt!
So pretty... I can appreciate all of the work it took to complete this skirt... cant want to see what else you come up with
Thank you! 🙂

I love your pin holder. Thanks for showing this technique. I'm always doing cartridge pleats. I'm going to try this next time.
This was a very informative video. I had no idea how to make this type of skirt.

Making them are just as satisfying too 🙂

Do you happen to have a video illustrating double or stacked box pleats?
I thought you did a very good job making the pleats. How did you find out how deep or how many inches you need each pleat?
Wowza. I hope to someday make a shorter version of this for lolita. It's gorgeous.

Absolutely! The skirt will not be as wide, but if that’s what your going for, than by all means I’d go for it 🙂
the pleats are beautiful :D so satisfying to see it all come together nicely! well done ^^
