It’s not only the toothbrush head but the body too. When I noticed how there’s mold in the brush head, I really take the time to separate them and clean them after use. At the top of the body there’s a gap around the metal piece, this is prone to have mold. I have the light color toothbrush. After awhile of using, I do notice the mold sipping out of the body where the gaps are. There’s no mold on the outside, but at the gaps, it’s very clear that there’s mold. I can’t imagine what’s like inside the toothbrush body.
For the amount of money I paid for this tooth brush, I would hope it was more resistant to mold. I rinse it thoroughly with water as the video shows and there is still mold growing on the inside of it. The model before this never had this problem!
I am a qualified dental nurse and I really love how the IO brush cleans my teeth. I am neurotic about rinsing both and my husbands IO brush after use, as per this video but still loads of residue builds up in the small openings and in around the magnet, eventually this starts to smell! 😪 I have to use interdental brushes and flossers to get in around these and remove the residue. I steep the heads in a steradent tablet once a week to remove the build up from around there. It’s very high maintenance and I’d much rather spend the time on the oral hygiene of my mouth than my toothbrush. 😠 I’ve had various oral b electric toothbrushes over the years and none of them required this amount of care. I was really keen to purchase the IO for my son but have decided not to now, as I know he will not take this much time to keep a brush clean , very few would. It’s unfortunately a bit of a flaw in the design. 😔
Black mold grows inside brush heads long before they begin to wear out. The brush heads aren't cheap so replacing every week isn't practical. This mold is not exactly visible as it resides deep within - it comes out in small chunks. Major design flaw of this brush is allowing these areas to be inaccessible & constantly wet. Go with another brush definitely - Oral-B iO victim.
Idk about the mold, because i shake the water out of the brush head and base and lay each separately flat on a paper towel to dry each time. After 3 months I don't see or smell anything. But who knows if there's small bits of mold in there. What I hate though is after you put a new brush head on, after a week they start make a horrible loud sound whenever you use it.
@@peewee6187 Do you put yours back on the plugged in charging dock? The dock starts charging it immediately after use or if its full it just wastes electricity since its light still works. I don't keep mine plugged in unless the battery is low.
Simply rinsing is insufficient. Brush and unit should be cleaned with soap/water, preferably foam soap to get into nooks/crannies, then dip brush and unit head into cup of mouthwash to sterilize. Let brush air dry in small cup that is regularly cleaned, not the stand which impedes air drying.
I appreciate that. I think you should re-do their video. They are in a make-believe world. The foam works, a lot quicker. They also don't talk about how to keep the base from getting water in it... which means you spend 2 minutes brushing but 4 minutes cleaning the brush....
To be honest, even with my genius 9000 I had before my current io, the inside of the cross action heads would sometimes be dirty looking by the time it was time to replace it, even with cleaning, but it's just the inside of the brush head body, so doesn't really matter as the inside of it doesn't make contact with any of you mouth. It's never done me any harm though.
I just got a brand new Oral B electric toothbrush because my old one (expensive Oral B!) was leaking a grey fluid, seemingly from the handle and not the base. I clean the head every time and dry the base. it seems to come out when I shake the handle after I have brushed. It is liquid, no bits of mould or anything. Anyway, I just used my brand new one for the first time and exactly the same thing happened on the first use!!! I have tried wetting it when it is dry and turning it on without brushing my teeth, then shaking it in the same way, and no grey water comes out. What is going on? Also, it's not originating from my mouth! So why is this happening? Help!

Naw.. I did it like that, but it wasn't enough. I use those rubber tooth picks to clean that base part that the brush head attaches into. I push the tooth pick all the way down into it and move around to get all the gunk out.

I purchased a new Oral-B toothbrush that cost me over $120 six months ago. The old one crapped out on me too. The new one is much worse. The Oral B head started to fray within three months. About a month later, this fetid smell came from what I thought was my mouth. I went to my Dentist who gave me the all clear regarding my dental health. She told me to check the smell of the mechanism beneath the brush head that I clean after each brushing, as well as cleaning the inner and outer brush head. Sure enough, something must be growing in the mechanism. My old Oral B power toothbrush at a third of the price never smelled after my brushing and cleaning regimen. I dislike Phillip’s Sonicare because it doesn’t reach my back teeth as easily as the Oral-B piece of crap. Is there another brand of electric toothbrush that doesn’t screw you out of your money anyone could recommend?
"that's it" - are you kidding me? Im sending mine back, it's rediculous. Why are there slots in the sides of the brush heads anyway, its leaking like crazy when in use. my sonicare did not do that and took basically no more maintenance than a normal tb.
