How much thought do you give to your toothbrush? If you’re like most of us, not a lot. But if your dentist has told you you are an aggressive brusher, you have gum disease, recession or cavities, you might have been told to check out a better toothbrush than the old manual option. I’m here to tell you there’s lots of choice in the electric/ultrasonic/smart toothbrush category and I’ve reviewed many of them. The latest to cross my sink is the all new Oral B iO smart electric toothbrush. In this review, I’ll look at what it’s like to use, how well I think it cleans and what kinds of special features it has.
    What is Oral B iO?
Oral B iO is a rechargeable electric toothbrush, with an Interactive Display that guides you as you brush. The brush also has a unique L-shaped head with a circular brush that’s a bit different from the standard horizontally-oriented brush. More on that in a sec. Paired with the Oral B app, it can help you slow down, stop brushing so hard, and to brush for long enough to be truly effective. Important for a toothbrush is should be effective and Oral B says the iO is validated by Canadian Dental Association to remove plaque, and reduce and prevent gingivitis.
    What’s in the Box?
In the package there’s the brush handle, two?? Toothbrush heads, a magnetic base for charging and a travel case.
    Set up and prep
There’s not too much to do to get ready to brush with the Oral B iO: plug in the charger and ensure it’s full of juice to start. Download the Oral B app to your phone. Pair?? That’s it
    Linear Magnetic Drive
In what sounds like the flux capacitor of the toothbrush world, Oral B touts something called Linear Magnetic Drive. Linear magnetic drive is supposed to “direct the cleaning energy to the point of every individual bristle and integrates Oral-B's iconic round brush with gentle micro-vibrations for better plaque removal* and an amazing brushing experience.” While that sounds like a lofty promise I think it translates to ‘the brush head vibrates around your mouth’. I wouldn’t say I felt cleaning energy at the end of every bristly but I appreciate a good sales pitch.
    Round Brush Head
The brush head is “Dentist-inspired” and is circular. It’s supposed to “expertly clean with micro-vibrations and oscillating action.”. Oral B doesn;t say on its website what a round brush is supposed to do better than a rectangular one
    Smart Pressure Sensor
What’s it like using Oral B iO?
This toothbrush has been an experience. I’m going to try to describe the experience without ending up being overdubbed j. for an adult video.
For starters, the round brush and L-shaped head take some getting used to. The configuration of the brush head really means you need to open up our mouth more and it can be a bit awkward to manoeuvre it into your cheeks. Because of its taller L-shape if feels really big and like it’s getting in the way of my teeth. I have to be really deliberate about brushing because it feels more like your operating a tool than just mindlessly brushing easily. But I guess that’s partly the point.
Brushing with this device does require your attention: you need to work to get it around your mouth. You need to apply the smaller circular brush head to every tooth. And of course you’re supposed to brush for the full two minutes or risk frowny face,.
The truth is, for me personally, I didn’t like the round L-shaped brush head; it was too big and awkward. I did appreciate how it made me slow down and brush more deliberately though.
    Battery Life:
    I got about 10-14 days
    Overall:
Overall I liked a lot of things about this brush and some things I didn’t. The round L-shaped brush head is a bit like using something shaped like a rake in your face. I jest, it’s not that bad, but it is like using a whole new tool. I didn’t care for it. The round brush head is okay; the brush itself is a lot smaller than I’m used to so it forces me to brush more deliberately, aiming to hit every tooth.
I like the colour screen, but I don;’t love the battery life. Compared to another toothbrush I have that lasts months, this one feels like I should be keeping it plugged in. I found a lot of the brushing modes to be too much for me personally. But at the same time, I really did feel like it cleaned really well. Selling for about $279 CAD, it’s also much more of an investment than some other options.
This is a tough one for me: I like the clean it delivers but the tool just isn’t my fave because I honestly prefer mindlessly brushing my teeth so I don’t think I’ll keep using with this one and will revert back to my other brush, whcih happens to be the Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean. That review by the way is also here on the channel.
The Oral-B iO is available in 4 different colours - Black Onyx, White Alabaster, Violet Ametrine and Rose Quartz, sold at local retail stores from $279.99.

The iO3 is a lot more affordable but missing the fancy digital display and interface to the phone app. Still works the same overall is my guess at nearly 1/3 the cost.

I’ve had my io for over a year Because there is no manual or instructions included in the package, and I was too lazy to look it up online, I did not know about all the features of the toothbrush.
This review provides so much more information than Oral B does

batteries have short run time (~5 brushings) and die after a year of double daily use, but for $7 ebay and 5m, easy to replace Sanyo UR14500AC 740mAh, just use a pipe wrench or vice grip to lightly grasp the bottom cap, twist (standard thread) and use pick tool etc to remove snap ring top (it's really on there), and then battery simply drops into the holder.

I have owned several oral B electric toothbrushes and this is by far is the best. I really like the round brush head no need to scrub just glide the brush and the round heads do a great job of cupping each tooth, not a fan of the app don’t need to add anymore time to my oral routine. Price is expensive I bought the series 9 if I could go back I think I would buy the series 7 and save a 100$. Great review video. You forgot to mention it only takes 3 hours to fully charge, you should try to use the gentle clean brush heads before you give up on the io.

I have used a regular brush for eons. As soon as this came in the mail, I charged it and tried it out with a new toothpaste, as well. I got gunk out that I wasn’t aware of. I love the series 9. It’s quite the tool, I am managing to get 3 solid minutes everyday. The smiley face appears at 1-2 minutes.

Nice review, thank you! Just bought this brush and have a problem with the brush head being too large - perhaps 50% larger than the previous model. This new design has a ring of longer brussels surrounding a shorter set. When you push on a flat surface, the outer layer spreads out. With the previous (smaller diameter brush), i could brush the surface of TEETH. The brush did NOT overlap onto the gums. How could a brush be designed to simultaneously clean both enamel and soft tissue? It can't. Guessing this new design will cause a lot of gum damage. Not from over brushing - but from poor mfr. design. This brush makes absolutely no sense. (previouly, i used the electric brush on my teeth and a soft manual brush to clean gums, etc.)

Thanks for video! It looks like your possibly still brushing your teeth rather than maybe letting the brush do the work and you moving it to the spot you want. Just something I noticed and I do the same thing but with the io9 I'm getting a little better at it. It oscillates more than my old inexpensive electric toothbrush. Overall really like the io9 although the app doesn't seem perfect sometimes I'm doing a section of teeth and the app is confused what teeth I'm brushing. Probably me doing something not quite right. Like the pressure feature. I used to brush far too hard and long. Its an expensive toothbrush but I just needed a little help so I spent extra. No regrets it cleans good and its helping me.

I wish there was an exact brush like this, but without the Bluetooth gimmick- *ahem* I mean “feature.” I looove the sleek and stylish look of this toothbrush, but I feel like the added Bluetooth technology makes it that much more expensive when I don’t see myself realistically using this feature beyond the initial excitement of getting my first electric toothbrush. I still kind of want this toothbrush so maybe I’ll wait for a really good sale. Are there any other models you’d recommend? (Great review btw)

I feel like you didn't give yourself enough time to get used to this brush. It takes a few weeks to get used to this brush, but once you do, you'll realize just how thoroughly it cleans your teeth. My teeth feel like I just came from a dental cleaning. As for the battery life, I'm a bit confused about why a toothbrush lasting 2 weeks is an issue. That's a long battery life, in my opinion. Maybe you're comparing it to some older model electric toothbrush, which isn't nearly as powerful.

    • @ErinLawrenceTV

@ErinLawrenceTV It took me almost a month to get used to how bulky the toothbrush felt in my mouth. It is a bit difficult to get the back molars, but I figured out how to maneuver it after a while. Now, after getting used to it, it's the best toothbrush I've owned. Of course, it's all just personal opinion.

nice video. I have the non "smart" version of this brush as recommended by my dentist. They advised that I shouldn't "brush", bur rather hold the brush on the gumline for 5 seconds per tooth area. As the brush ihead is spinning, there is no need to move your hand in the conventional sense. Once I got my head around that, my teeth cleaning has improved.

I have the regular Oral B. I got mine from Costco Canada about a year and a half ago, on sale for roughly $100 for two units. I only charge them about once a month.

I got this toothbrush for half the price to test. And it kinda feels strange to use it. I’m actually using a non- electric nano toothbrush. And it feels like my tooth’s are cleaner with my nano toothbrush then the io. Not to mention the battery life but I have the io on the charger all the time. And the 3d thingy isn’t accurate. I wouldn’t buy this toothbrush again, and definitely not for the price. Go for the io8 or 7 it’s almost the same. I’ll still use this toothbrush until it died but I’ll also use my nano.

Purchased this through my dentist but there’s no way I’m going to download an app for a toothbrush. Wow

Hmmm..... This review had made me think twice to perhaps go with the Philips Sonicare for the head although don't know how I'll like their ultrasonic tech as I've been a Otal B (older head) user for many years. I am a little cautious on their new larger head as it does look to be a little awkward to use. Think I'll go the Sonicare Diamomd Smart 9700 as currently I can pick one up for a steal ($270 AUD / Aussie Dollars) Anyway thanks for a honest review it'll certainly help in making the right decision for me.

I love mine, I bought it a couple of days ago. The only thing is I used the whiten mode, after brushing it tells me to clean my tounge, but I don’t understand, am I supposed to use the toothbrush for that? Because it mentions tounge cleaning mode, but how do I select it?
Well I sent an email to the company, it’s not very clear

Not sure if anyone else has this problem but its impossible for me to keep the pressure light green. It seems way to more force to put on my teeth..

I bought this toothbrush. I use it for regular brushing. It is great! I also use a manual toothbrush after using the electric. This way I am sure I brushed properly. I can buy new brushes and different types on line or at a pharmacy near to me.

Greetings from sunny Florida! And thank you for posting this most informative video , Erin. You've just saved me near $300 USD on this toothbrush. Your review showed me all of what I needed to about this device. I too enjoy "mindlessly" brushing my teeth instead of making it a such a laborious and uncomfortable endeavor just to keep my teeth clean. Liked and subscribed. Keep 'em coming! Be safe and be well.
