- Malaysia is home to many unique cuisines, from Chinese dishes to Malay dishes, from Nyonya food to Indian curries. There is so much delicious food to be found throughout this South-East Asian country.
In this video I explore Carpenter Street in Sarawak's capital Kuching. There are numerous restaurants here with yummy meals, but I am looking for the best noodles in the world! These can be found at the Kim Joo Coffeeshop!
This family run noodle restaurant has been operating for more than 60 years. Personally, they serve the best Kolo Mee Noodles in the whole world!
The Kim Joo Coffeeshop is located at 73, Ewe Hai Street (Carpenter Street) in downtown Kuching. They are open every day (except for Mondays) from 06.00 - 14.00.

Kolo Mee the origin is from Kuching, a dry noodle with non-halal minced meat, char siao meat and a bit of boiled vegetables in it, selling at the hawker street side. Best eat it with cut red (big) cilli marinated in dark vinegar. In Kuching several types of choices, such as a signatured 'Red Kolo Mee', the colour red oil is actually the sauce came from the BBQ 'Char Siao meat' and served with a hot bowl of mix vegetable, wanton, meat chunks soup. Kolo means 'Dry Stir' or 'Dry Mix' in local dialect chinese, also know as 'Kan Lao' (Dry Mix)' Noodle. and it's easy to prepare, delicious to eat! and cheap too! (those ol'days only RM 2.50 per bowl). so popular that these dish been copy and re-modify in other countries, they re-name it Mee Kolok (halal version), or Dry Mee (mix with dark soy noodle) mostly can find it in West Malaysia, Dark Vinegar Kolo Mee, Seafood Kolo Mee, Lobster Kolo Mee and much more. Nowadays its listed in the Menu of high-end restaurant and 5 stars hotels, it has become a National Food.
Wow! Such a great comment with a stunning amount of information. Thanks so much for sharing this!! I have learned a lot!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 big clap.....thank info....
Mee kolok is kolok mee’s halal cousin 😊
Its my parent favourite place for having breakfast. Its really nice place to eat. Carpenter street the most nostalgic, legendary and historical place. Well done , l really enjoyed your video, Nick
Thanks so much for watching! Carpenter street is my favorite street here in Kuching!
Thank you for promoting Sarawak to the world.
It's my pleasure! I love showing the uniqueness of this beautiful state.
Those were the days....when I was in Kuching.... missing coffee at Kim Joo ☕🤗. Also Nick show us the open market area just opposite Electra's House . I miss d Rojak kangkong n ABC.....🤭👍
I will go to the open air market soon! I love the kolo mee there with some sio bee!
I went to Kim Joo the very next day after watching your video. The kolo mee is indeed not like the regular ones you find all over town - has a slight sourish tang to it. Love the pork pau and now buying regularly from him. As a Kuching resident, I never realised that Ewe Hai Street is actually the end part of Carpenter Street. I always thought it is one of the side streets leading off from Carpenter. Thanks for the recommendation of Kim Joo - it is old school, unpretentious and quaint! I passed your shop but you were not in then.
Hey! Thanks for visiting Kim Joo after watching my video! That's nice to hear! I'm usually at my workshop on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. However, I am traveling quite a bit these coming weeks!
Definitely!! this shop I had when I'm ard 25 yo, I still remember the taste when I back to KL, I'm asking around for the shop name around my friends from East Malaysia, no one know about it when I described the mee with vinegar ( I didn't remember the shop name). I able to walk around the town on business trip two years back when I was age 36, gosh! I find this shop back !!!! I'm so glad that the taste was still the same ! 😭
Cool story! They maintain their traditional recipe, I just love it too! I have been eating these noodles regularly for over 11 years! Haha
I missed original kolomee from Kuching. Have not been back for 2 years ( currently in Singapore). Love watching your channel!
Hey! Thanks for watching the video. I can imagine you must miss Kuching a lot. I hope you can make a trip back soon.
Definitely a good pit stop to try out the delicious local cuisine at carpenter street. Thanks for bringing us around Nick !👍
Thanks for allowing my video to occupy some of your time today! Thanks for your comment!
Yeah now kolo mee/laksa Sarawak can been seeing around all the Malaysia as long there are Kuching people live around the place I'm proud to be Sarawakian 😎
I'm from Peninsula & I love Kolo Mee ❤

Nick, 😎
Nice restaurants in the neighborhood. 👍
Especially near your workshop.
Indeed! It was one of the reasons we opened up our shop here!
Wow! Just found out Colondong is soursop. Full of vitamins and supposedly anti cancer treatment. Lucky you Nick. Its so difficult to find soursop in other countries in region nowadays.
Kedongdong is actually a different fruit. The soursop is also delicious, and it's called Durian Belanda here! How funny, named after my Dutch people! Thanks for watching!
hopefully visit there soon, all local food so delicious
You should! You won't regret it!
wow great that we know bout this place.will pay Kim Joo a visit on my next trip to Kuching
Thanks for watching! I hope you can visit Kuching and Kim Joo soon in the future!
@@GlobalGibbon i lived there in 1977 n visited a couple of times.am a MAS crew hope i can visit soon n order a coffee table too

Super duper yummy . Never beeb to this place. Must go here one day....great sharing and nice vlog. 👍
Thanks for watching! You're awesome!
Nick, thank you for your great videos. I am having a great time in this wonderful city, but unfortunately tomorrow I have to go on with my trip. One thing is clear: I will come back as soon, as I can, but meanwhile step by step I will see all your videos to learn and to prepare myself even more for the moment I come back! I felt in love with Sarawak and his culture. May be, I will come to live at least for one or two years here. (I am already 67, so plans are more short term driven). All the best for you and your family and again thks for your videos and for which is yet to come !
Nice sharing ♥️
mmm kolo mee was my favorite! Mouth watering just watching the video! I also had coffee at the Black Bean coffee a few times! Around that area I went to the Indah cafe many times and took their cooking class. However I must admit that as I am a pretty bad cook I haven't been able to redo any of the delicious recipes. I was surprised the other day when I went to eat at the Gaia here in Burgos, Spain. The owners are a couple who travelled extensively before the pandemic in Asia. I asked if they had been to Kuching. She told me sure thing and even had a tatoo done. Finally they even had laksa on the menu that day!
Great comment! Thanks for sharing! I used to have a coffee at black bean every single day when I was working nearby. These days we make our own coffee in the workshop from Kura Kura coffee, a local coffee producer, yummy!
I love Indah as well, I like their vegan sandwich. I am looking forward to doing the cooking class soon as well!
Wow.. My hometown.. Kuching.. Thank's for man for promo my hometown to the world.. Stay save and god bless..
It's my pleasure, Kuching is amazing!
😂😂😂😂 buah kedondong...mcm kau sebut in the beginning...beniging...beniginiging...❤❤
That hair salon in 2:34 .. has trimmed 3 generations of my family's hair.. starting from my parents, my siblings and now my kids.. we used to live about 5mins walk from there

Its been amazing watching your content Nick. My wife and i live in the UK now and she hasnt been able to see her mum for 3 years. Finally we will be coming back to Kuching on the 1st 😁 She said she recognised you she used to work at 5 ft way
Hey Gareth! Thanks for watching my video! I'm happy you guys can come visit Kuching again soon. Do come and say hi at my workshop on Carpenter Street when you're here!
5 foot way, good memories! Haha
I always having my afternoon coffee at the Black Bean. I guarantee their coffee is much more better than Starbucks.
So true! They serve the best cup of coffee in Kuching! Next time, pop by my workshop and say hi!
@@GlobalGibbon sure Nick. 👍
A cup of black coffee at Chinese coffee shop cost RM 1++(mostly places at west malaysia state)..A cup of americano at Starbucks cost RM10++(whole Malaysia Starbucks shop) 🤣🤣
Top video. I miss Carpenter Street, the kolo mee of mister Kim Joo and you Mag and Milow. ❤
We miss you a lot too!!!
I just discovered your channel and been catching up with all the videos! thank you for promoting Sarawak to the world! Hope to see you one day :)
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. There r many other noodles dishes that u can try later. Handmade noodles r always d best.
What is your fav pasta? Mine is spaghettini bolognese, used to make it every now n then, now I can't remember when was d last time I cooked it. While I was in KL, I used to cook spaghetti bolognese for Raya, I even made some for office gatherings. I also add to d buffet, sardines spaghetti for my farewell, posting to Mumbai n also did d same for two colleagues who were on official visit to Mumbai. Now, I made myself hungry, hehehe, haven't eaten since I woke up in d morning, for more than 21 years now, it's felt like I have performed fasting in ramadan, eating once a day in d evening. 🙂
You eat once a day? Wow, that's something different. I don't really like pasta so much, but I do like to make a simple tuna pasta with a bit of olive oil, tomatoes and garlic. Simple is yummy!
@@GlobalGibbon Yes, I only eat once a day due to budget constraint. Yes, simple is delicious, tuna pasta sounds good. 🙂
Many youtubers talk abuot kolo mee. But you nailed it bro. Keep up the good work
Thanks buddy! I always try to do it a bit different!
Will go this weekend. Thanks Nick
Nice! If you go during the week, you can say hi to us at our workshop two doors down!

Some people say kampua mee taste better kolo mee? Or personal favorite?
Nice tour on Carpenter Street, Nick, memories land for me, miss kolo mee and all those local friendly people..stay safe & God bless
It's a truly nostalgic street. I love working there every day, the whole street and all the people have so much character. I could make 10 videos about the street!
Carpenter street was my favorite place for mama an when I lived in Sarawak in 1968. I am glad that the food is still banyan Sadat There are very few places that serve Malaysian food in California. Please give some suggestions on where to get Malaysian food in California Does anyone know where to get Sarawak food in California
Jack
Thanks for watching Jack! I found one place in California that sells Malaysian food. Here's a link to a video I watched a while ago about this food truck:
"Satay Queen of San Francisco" is the name of the food truck.

welcome to kuching hope you enjoy your lifestyle here
Hi Nick, did you know we Malaysian and Indonesian call Dutch or Netherlands “Belanda”.. and i always wonder why Soursop is called Durian Belanda .. still don’t know till today😃
i wonder the same thing as well
I do know that! We're Orang Belanda from the word Holland, Hollanda (other word for the Netherlands).
I know why they call the Proboscis Orang Belanda, as they have big bellies and big noses like us! Haha.
I also don't know why there is a Durian Belanda and even Ayam Belanda. I will have to do some research!
Maybe the Durian Belanda is because we Dutch can be a bit sour sometimes? Soursop in English right? 😂😂
@@GlobalGibbon nick..a soursop? All I see is the cool, calm dutch guy..never masam
While we’re on Belanda, Malay also having a saying “Belanda Dapat Tanah” 😂
Nice video Nick! Don’t hear a Dutch accent when you speak Englisch👌🏻. Hope the borders will open soon so we can taste all that delicious food. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks for watching! The borders to Malaysia will open on the 1st of April!
it has been a long long time i didnt patronize this cafe, i always order 'one set' whenever i come to his coffee shop...
It's time to plan a trip back there again for your One Set!
I always order the bak cho mee at Kim Joo, Nick, which translate to meat ball noodles. You should try it with black vinegar. It's been my usual meal everytime I go to Kim Joo. Their kicap chicken rice is good too
Yeah, they have many delicious dishes. My wife also likes the Bak Cho. I shall order it next time. When I am really hungry, I'd go for the fried rice. Only once in a while I can finish it! Such a big plate full! 😂
Nick, I been living here all my life never know this place, thanks bro
Time to go Makan there!
Morning pals...👍👍
Good morning!!!!

Hallo! You're awesome 😎
Nick, have you tried the stall name "Red Kolo Mee" at open air market? It's quite popular.
Hey! Yes! I love the kolo mee there at the Open Air Market. It goes well with the Sio Bee that they sell at the neighbouring stall. Yummy!
Love ur blog keep doing
Thank you so much! I upload videos every week! 😁
Am yet to eat there...maybe I'd like to one day
You should definitely add it to your bucket list!
I was told that the malays in East Malaysia is very different from West Malaysia KL. In the GOOD SENSE. the east Malaysian are more easy to get along.
Here in Sarawak, everyone lives together and everyone is friends - no matter what race or background. That's why I love living here!
good post but cannot agree .. Best you try Noddle Descendants in Kuching Jalan Pandungan No 172.

My favorite mee Kolok. 😍
Oh yummy!
Red kolo mee please! Btw come to Sin Chong Choon cafe
Ooh, I also like the red one, yummy!
Sure you’re not going back to Amsterdam?Anymore? Promise?
I am planning a trip back to Europe later on in the year. It's been 4 years since I have been back!
Eating kolomee in Kuching is a religious experience equivalent to eating original pizzas in Naples Italy.
Do they send them over to KL? Grab? Foodpanda? LaLa Food?
Haha, unfortunately not. I guess you'll just have to book a trip to Kuching!
What's that green drink called?
Enjoy your ko lo Mee Nick.A lots of ko lo Mee stall in Kuching but not all taste nice.
G’day & Good afternoon Nick.. You make me really homesick see that kolo Mee … we in Australia no kolo Mee .. If the have it’s never the same kolo Mee like in Sarawak ☺️😆😋😋😋😋😋
Hey! I can imagine that Kolo Mee in Australia would be very different than here in Kuching! Are there any nice Malaysian restaurants nearby your house?
Anne,i left Sunshine Coast,at Sunshine Coast university,2 1/2 years ago,I used to work at the Thai restaurant there, don't you think that, that is a bit of boring there? But,i can travel to KL for Beef noodle near the China Town,or fly to Kuching or Sibu for other delicious local for a penny compare to Australia....Be safe, protect yourself,be happy...
@@GlobalGibbon Nick.. we have Malayisan restaurants near me here, but no kolo Mee I ever found in Australia … If the have Kolo Mee will never be the same kolo mee as in Sarawak☺️😆🖐👌👍
Now have some instant kolo mee brand's noodles can buy online.. that is a good new for ppl overseas
Hi,yes, there is a company in Sibu, produced the instant kanpua/kolomee,almost similar to the real one,to ship oversea is costly, why don't you drop by eat & enjoy it in a few pennies, after the covid-19,have a holiday there,God bless...

Hi Nick. I will travel solo to kuching end of this month. Where is the food court?
Hey there! The places in this video are all along Carpenter Street, the second main street in downtown Kuching. It's the first street inland from the waterfront. 😁

delicious
Yes indeed! Sedap!
If I may ask about the opening times why the early opening and closing is it the heat do people rise at 5 am ? what are normal working hours ? Ty
Hi! Many restaurants are open for breakfast and lunch only, so they open around 6 am and close around 2pm. Most people will go to a coffeeshop in the morning for a cup of coffee or breakfast, before going to work. Other restaurants are only open for dinner. Normal office hours are the same in other parts of the world, from 9-5.
Hi !, nick...goodday!,
Hey Karen! Good morning!
Handsome man good afternoon 🌅🌻😊
Amazing comment! Thanks! 😂
Is this the same as Wanton Noodles?
Wanton Noodles are different! There are so many different types of noodles available. Yummy!
If laksa Sarawak I think pak amit cafe or mom's laksa is good
Moms laksa is yummy yes!
Wait, until u try laksa penang or mi bandung, u will forgot kolo mee...
I must say I love a good Laksa Sarawak, which is my second favorite dish. I did try the Laksa Penang once but somehow I didn't quite like it. I will have to try it again in Georgetown soon!
Kolo Mee is the best noodle menu.
I agree! Yummy!
@@GlobalGibbon even though Kolo Mee is originally a non-halal food, you should give it a try for the halal version. They have their own uniqueness as well.
