- What the shit is up my dudes! Today I will be reacting and reviewing to Periphery - Reptile (Audio) from the album "Periphery IV: HAIL STAN". Do you guys agree or disagree with my thoughts?

This song was my introduction to Periphery. No lie, a new-to-me metal band hasn't knocked me on my ass like this in 15+ years. Whoa.

Well actually that bit in Garden in the bones is a nod to reptile. Reptile has a little bit of every other song on the album within it. That's why its such a good intro track
I fucking love Garden in the Bones so I'm so okay with them using that melody twice
they actually wrote reptile first, then reference it in the rest of the album.
This song is a great example of wh Periphery stand out for me among the tech metal crowd. They wrote a 17 minute long song but never lost the melody, the groove or the mood throughout. You can sing along with parts and headbang to others. So many tech bands just throw 50 time signatures into one song and it’s got no discernible structure. It’s not all about playing as many notes as possible while switching from 5/8 to 3/4 every 30 seconds.
That's cause Periphery is in no way tech metal.
Trent Crow that’s a huge part of why Reptile stands out to me. It’s a super long song where I never think “how much of the song is left?” while listening to it because it’s that entertaining and moving to listen to. There are so many great things about this song. And as far as the 50 time signatures thing,I get what you’re saying. Some songs definitely nail it and do it with a musical purpose (Panic Attack by Dream Theater is a perfect example),but there are plenty of examples where it might be done just for the sake of doing it. For me though,it doesn’t bother me either way. 99% of music that most people consume nowadays is in common time (4/4) or 3/4. So hearing stuff in different time signatures is very refreshing.
The climax for me is around the 9 minute mark, after the spoken word section. I've listened to the song dozens of times and still get chills every single time. I'm becoming more and more torn on whether or not this will overtake Stranger Things or the Somewhere In Time Trilogy

Same. Lovethe whole song but after the spoken word part it is pure perfection. Spencers vocals after the spoken section is amazing.
For sure. National alliance .. he leads the fight. Definitely kicks off the climax in my opinion. Very powerful.
The part after the spoken word is the most perfect piece of music I can personally imagine hearing
Don't know if you're planning to react to more off this album or listen on your own but either way you absolutely have to check out the track Satellites, imo it's Spencer's best performance of his career and overall it's just a masterpiece, I get chills every listen.
I can highly recommend Periphery's Satellites from P IV.
Reptile is amazing and I'll love it forever. Satellites triggers the biggest emotions for me (though It's Only Smiles and Sentient Glow are close behind).
To separate from my other comment, the song is literally about an alien reptile invasion on earth where a stoner named Billy is the one who saves the world 🤣 The beginning goes something like
'Here is a story about a boy who reached the masses.
His name was Billy and he liked to get high.
A normal day until the green skin apocalypse a do or die'
And that's literally what the whole song is about. Although fun little Easter egg, when Spencer says 'There must be something in the water', and the song is called Reptile, I personally believe it's a satirical jab at Alex Jones when he said 'The water is turning the frogs Gay', and if I recall correctly, he believes former political persons are actually reptiles. So theres that as well.

Absolutely agree with the alien invasion thing. However, I see this more of a tragic story were Billy defeats the aliens, but loses someone who's close to him or he dies protecting someone he loves, and the last part is the burial.

Anytime you hear an epic amount of pinch of harmonics in any riff or solo, it’s Mark.
I like to think of it as having chapters. A beginning, middle and an end with interludes and bridges.

Thanks for turning me onto yet another band. I'm only recently getting into more Progressive Metal and Deathcore, so you've opened my eyes to a couple of really good bands already mate.
Yer man mikee goodman from SikTh does the narration in the middle bit, the bit after that gives me chills everytime, ive listened to this 50 times and just keeps getting better, great review
Racecar was my favorite before but Reptile took the throne for me 🤷🏻♂️ Its also a very good summary of the entire album and what to expect. Fantastic song and album
Also you should check out Ghost Iris if you haven't before (After the Sun Sets Part II or The Rat and the Snake, but neither have actually music videos). They're seriously a criminally underrated band
The reason it ebbs and flows so much is because the lyrical content wills it to be that way. It's a full story, set in a post apocalyptic world. It's supposed to feel like an action movie
This song is a modern masterpiece.

I think nowadays Mark is writing most of the badass riffs. I believe he's responsible for reptile, it's only Smiles, the way the news goes, etc. When I say responsible I mean for the big idea and riff of a song. Its still always a team effort no matter what.

Most of the atmospheric background ambiance is actually Jake. He fills the space in the sick Holcomb/Mansoor riffs with the textural stuff.. Such an incredible blending of 3 great guitars!

I love every aspect of your album background
Ok wow, a lot to unpack. Never heard any periphery, completely missed this band. Musically this was great. Such nice ebb and flow; sweet dynamics. Vocally it was really off putting initially, bad flashback to emo boy bands but maaan did he win me over. Wonderful soaring cleans, soft spoken word, great screams, fucking solid as shit.
Think I gotta make my mom listen to this next time the folks come to visit, such an elegant demonstration of very many different aspects of metal. It's approachable yet complex, and there's basically something for everyone, regardless of what you prefer, it's got it all. Perfect way to shut down the "it's just noise" argument.
Also, think orc/orch (like in lord of the rings) + straw but soften the w and kinda make it an L, orchestral 👍

He is dismissed and lumped into the emo/boyband/generic-core waaaaay too quickly by a lot of people.
@@moatfloater yeah it gave me bad flashbacks to like fall out boy, bullet for my valentine and green day. But he didn't keep going with those vocals, he changed it up massively after like 2 minutes

There a fun band....to me there like a very silly yet fun mix of sikth, twelve foot ninja and polkodot caldavar/mr.bungle.

You must check Omega from this band, it's the song that gave the title to the part two of their Juggernaut album, it's very similar in structure with reptile.

I really think you should check out Persefone. Either Consciousness pt.1 and 2 or Returning to the Source. The band is right up your alley seeing as how we have very similar tastes. Ik you will love it
The fucking breakdown is the climax. I've listened to this song a hundred times over and never fail to get goosebumps
I think for me, the true climax is when Mark's solo ends and leads into the orchestra, with the garden in the bones prelude being the comedown.
I thought the Focus Hour riff was he climax of this song, although it was in the middle.
React to this one with your girl if she’s willing to sit through a song that long lol also you should react to music with or without music videos more often, because typically the songs with music videos aren’t the best songs from the band.

Archspire Human murmuration guitar playthrough (you will love it! Tech death with a special growler and 4 great musicians all exceptional ) , Beyond creation - earthborn evolution or all other songs, don't really care ( Fretless Bass). Obscura - Akroasis (one of the best young guitarists in our scene). I don't want to spoil too much otherwise there is no surprise.
So i literally have only gotten about 10 seconds into the video (first time watcher) and started looking at the back panel you have. It was literally me drunkenly out loud saying "Oh shit he's got btbam, neat Sitkh! Fuckin Darkest Hour, and what is that Dillinger? Christ he's got Kezia on there! Every Time I Die, my boyyy!" etc etc
