The John Deere 3R cab rock shaft adjustment

  • Regarding a recent video by TTWT I felt obligated to touch on a few key points that should have been mentioned. But, this isn't the only purpose of my video, it seems to be very common place now that the rockshaft on these 3R cabbed models are simply not adjusted properly from the factory. I found this information on Green Tractor Talk online forum, once I had this knowledge I made all the necessary adjustments and finally got my 3 point adjusted. I hope this video helps out someone else.

    Good content and information Pat. Very thorough explanation and no "exciting" headlines to attract attention. BTW, I had to go through most of the same adjustments except for the cable on my previous 3 Series OS tractor. Once and done.

    My 4R is easier down than it is up. So mine acts just like yours. I do agree with you that these adjustments should have been done at the assembly line since there is a spec for the 3pt adjustments.

      Absolutely, no way we should have to worry about getting the rock shaft adjusted properly. But, once it’s done it is much nicer, and a sense of accomplishment knowing that I made it right myself.

    actually the right thing to do IMO is to talk to Tim privately prior to going public
    which i was very surprised when i read the thread on GTT to see that clearly that hadn't happened
    as far as the technical part of your video you did a fantastic job showing and explaining the procedure

    Pat,
    Let me take a minute to defend Tim and myself some if I may...
    We shot that video top present facts as we found them, and I feel that is what we did. The results were just as shown in the video on the various machines, the 3R cabbed was brand new on loan from JD with only a few hours on it. We (at least for sure I) did not think of trying to mention adjustment or solutions for each individual result we found as we did tests and comparisons, that obviously would not have been possible in that video due to time-but is a good topic for future videos from Tim and even other influencers like yourself.
    It seems the rockshaft and joystick issue really touched a nerve with some guys including yourself, and I'm personally sorry for that-it was not the intention to bash the machines, but merely show the differences overall between them since it's rare to have so many machines in one place at the same time.
    Anyway, we are starting to beat the horse more deader 😆 I am happy to hear (and learn) that the adjustments can me made easily on the cabbed machines, and that you are not unhappy with the joystick as soooo many are including myself. Regarding that, I've also learned that the cabbed 4R's use a much different cable routing setup that greatly reduces the force needed to operate the joystick when directly compared to the cabbed 3R's. I'm still doing some research on how we might incorporate that idea in the 3R to make it better.
    Tractor on! Keep up the great videos my friend 👍

      @ElkCreekAcres  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for the reply Kenny!!
      To set the record straight, I was not purposely trying to bash Tim's video. The only thing that really touched a nerve with me is the fact that his channel has so much more reach than a small channel like mine. I haven't looked, but his video is likely at 40K views, mine will be lucky to reach 500. So it is IMO up to the bigger channel to be more diligent when making videos, simply due to the amount of reach that his video will achieve. I understand the loaner tractor issue, but there again, that could have been mentioned.
      As for the FEL, I never said that I like it, it's definitely not as nice as a direct connect. All I'm saying is that with mine I don't feel it is as much of a burden as many like to say it is. And many of the haters are simply "following the line at chow time" IMO.
      Thanks again for stopping by and dropping a comment, you are still one of the most respected in the JD world and I appreciate what you do for us.

      @@ElkCreekAcresobviously I shoulda mentioned or even adjusted the 3 pt lever.
      However, the MAIN point of our video was intended to be the loader joystick. ….and to my knowledge, there is no way to adjust it.
      I personally think YOU are not being fair by brushing the loader joystick issue under the rug…trying to isolate the discussion on the ONE area that COULD be adjusted.
      I love the 3R cab tractor, but this issue is major. Denying it is being disingenuous. Not helpful to our viewers.
      We try to do an accurate job, and we WERE accurate in this video. Failing to think about and mention the 3 pt adjustability seems pretty minor to me when Christy cannot smoothly control the loader with one hand!

      @@TractorTimewithTim just making sure I understand you. If I say that I can operate my loader as smooth as necessary is misleading and disingenuous!! But for you to say that it takes 27 lbs of force to pull the rock shaft lever back without mentioning the very simple adjustment to correct this is not misleading or disingenuous?? You seem focused on the FEL, my video was to show the adjustments to the rock shaft so the user has a fully functional 3 point hitch.

    Great video. Needed to adjust mine and this was helpful to increase the height. Does the feedback control also adjust the low limit position or is that only adjusted with the valve linkage? mine does not seem to drop low enough. Also were you able to remove pin “B” in the image from the service manual for the valve adjustment without taking the tire off? It looks like it’s a pressfit pin. As I said I need mine to drop lower to hook up to a a JD weight ox with my imatch. Now I need my weight box to be on RR ties to reach it since the hitch won’t drop low enough. Thanks for the videos!

    I didn’t have much issue with this video. We did not think of or mention that the 3 pt lever tension could be adjusted, ok, could be a mistake…and we put ourselves out there, so we can take the criticism.
    However, Pat’s replies to the comments are a different story. Total misdirection, We pointed out a major issue with the 3R which to my knowledge has NO fix.
    The loader joystick control is very difficult to control, and requires a LOT of strength to operate smoothly. Christy simply cannot control it smoothly with her small weaker hands.
    I consider Pat a friend. I have no idea why he has chosen to attack. This really should not have been a big deal.

    • @ElkCreekAcres
      @ElkCreekAcres  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tim, this was not a personal attack on you, I even referenced that towards the end. I suppose to me it seem a bit overdramatized on the rock shaft lever, especially with no mention about just how easily it can be adjusted. With a channel as big as yours your video could very easily mislead the unknowing to believe that this is it.
      As far as the FEL joystick I will agree, it definitively takes more force to move it. But I will stand by my statements that I have no trouble operating it smoothly. Actually if I could just eliminate the slop I wouldn’t have any real issue with mine, with the exception that the float detent is not as easy to engage as it was on my other tractors. IMO that’s not misleading anyone, that’s just been my experience, but that is also limited to only this cabbed 3R.

      @@ElkCreekAcres you certainly didn’t defend me to the guy who says ‘this is why he unsubscribed’ from me.And yes…you DID focus on one small point in our video. Rather than the whole point.
      BTW, how well can your daughter handle the joystick?

    • @ElkCreekAcres
      @ElkCreekAcres  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TractorTimewithTim my daughter can operate this loader, but she doesn't actually use the tractor, so for any expectation of her operating it as smoothly as I do is not fair, but she can and has operated it just playing around. My wife has operated it as well, though I was more nervous than usual when she was hoisting me up in the bucket with a chainsaw to trim branches. Lol
      The focus of my video was not on one small segment of your video. It was to show people that the rock shaft can easily be adjusted. In reading in Facebook groups and on GTT it is no secret that most of the cabbed 3R's are coming from the factory with the rock shaft all out of sorts. I wanted to show people this, and I actually tried to film it, but without removing the rear tire you couldn't honestly make out what I was doing in there. So, I decided to use screen shots of the tech manual instead, I'm not as high tech as you. Yes, I focused on that one segment of your video only because it seemed like a big deal in your video, and it's a very simple adjustment that took literally only a few minutes. As I've told you, I didn't use my scale before I started. I simply adjusted it until it "felt" better and then used my digital scale to make the final adjustment.
      Sorry if I offended you, that was not my intention. But, your video touched a nerve with me as well as the title. As I said, better advice would be to go to the dealer and try one out first.
