Great video Courtney! The ones on the Kubota are Faster (brand) couplers. For the pressure buildup problem with grapples, etc., I simply bought another set of male/female couplers and put a tiny ball valve on the other end. Plug them on the implement hoses and simply crack the ball valves to relieve any pressure buildup.
The couplers on your Kuboda are pioneer style with a double action collar, mounted in a breakaway configuration. The double action collar can be moved in either direction to get the retaining balls to disengage. In a breakaway configuration the collar is clamped (or is a housing) so the coupler moves instead of the collar. This is pretty common setup on larger tractors and has been around for decades. My 1973 Allis Chalmers 200 (original owner) came with these.
Yes, they are Pioneer couplers that just release when the collar is moved either way. The collar is what is attached to the tractor, so as you push or pull the hose it's actually moving the collar just like you would by hand on a standard coupler. The AC 200 you speak of has little levers that can assist you on the outlets.
I needed this episode. The hydraulics on my tractor always confuse me. I read the chapter about it in the manual and it feels like it’s written in a completely different language. This vid was a huge help in me gaining a little more understanding about something so crucial to tractors and operating them. Edit: I know this is your job, but your videos are very informative and have the ability to make sense to the most novice of tractor users (me, lol). Your hard work and dedication will see this company soar. Keep up the Good Works Courtney. 👍👍
I put a thin layer of grease on the chrome piston if the implement is going to sit around for awhile to prevent pitting, then just wipe off when i go to use it.
Great Video. I drove hydraulic lift high cube commodity trailers for 14 years. The change in temperature would cause the hoses to pressurize. We used a block of wood and a hammer to release the pressure. We had 1” pioneer fittings.
Perhaps i missed it, but you also want to relieve the pressure on your 3rd function. Once the tractor is off, you need to move the third function rocker switch back and forth before unplugging your lines.
Check to see if the third function valve is electric and if the key has to be on to use it. If the valve is keyed, you have to turn the key back on after you stop the engine, then rotate the joystick to release the pressure to the valve and the hoses.
That push or pull to get hoses hooked or disconnected was around for years its a pioneer couple that is mounted by the collar they were mounted that way years ago .the collar is solid mounted u push in the hose moves pull out the hose moves and if your implement comes unhooked the couplers release instead of breaking hoses
great segment. good advice about moving the joystick to relieve the pressure. thanks for the tips. going to have to look into a top link for my JD 1026R
When hydraulic connections fit it feels satisfying. When they don’t connect it is so annoying. Why are the connectors on the back of the Kubota not an industry standard?
Great video and really appreciate the info. I have a TYM 394 with a backhoe and both backhoe hoses have male fittings. I connected the backhoe and turned on the valve but nothing worked. I swapped the hoses and that fixed the issue. So, for some tractors / attachments, the direction of fluid flow matters!
All tractors and attachments require the correct fluid flow direction. Some stuff will just work backwards, some stuff won't work at all, and some stuff can be damaged by hooking the hoses up backwards.
Upgraded my 2014 1025R with power beyond, an electric 3 spool rear remote from Summit. Have a top link on one spool, wrapping the loose hydraulic lines with the hose wraps to prevent any chaffing. Going to add a tilt link on the second spool. And the third spool I'd like to rig something up to lift the 60" belly mower which is the challenge.
This was a very helpful video. I just did a retrofit on my FEL hoses and need a way to mark them so that if I disconnect them at the quick connect, it will idiot proof the re-connection. You gave me a direction to go in.
For the 3rd function do you need a bigger tank beciase your running another hydraulic cylinder? I have a bigger older tractor that I want to do this to but I wanted to ask before I spent the money on it
Lol sorry, I should also clarify the term originates with firefighting hose, where a Mr higbee added a notch on the threaded couplers of each side so that mating hoses quickly under duress and with ppe on would be easier. It marked the start thread of each side so you could repeatedly get a positive connection. …Former volunteer fireman….. it always stuck with me
My JD 2240 front hydraulics get week when working pto or front bucket for a while. Was told I needed 2500 worth of new trans pump. Going to try the filter and new screens first too.
Filter might help, but hydraulics getting weak after the oil gets warm is a tell-tell sign of a worn pump. Could also be a worn relief valve, which is much cheaper than a pump.
Courtney, you did not show the replacement of the hydro filter on the JD 4720. Could you please show the filter and the replacement procedure. thanks, Bob
My 3520 has a relief valve on the 3rd function box. Clockwise for pressure, counter clockwise pass through, no resistance pressure for running a backhoe where the backhoe controls regulate pressure. Turn the valve counter clockwise to relieve all pressure when hooking the grapple up and hook the grapple lines together when dropping while there’s no pressure.
Turning off the tractor and relieving the pressure is absolutely a good idea, but it might not prevent over pressure if you relieve the pressure when it's cold and try to connect when the weather has warmed up, or even gone from morning to afternoon temperatures. Hydraulic fluid isn't compressible in any practical sense, so when it expands due to heat it expands the hoses which are a really stiff spring. The pressure relieves quickly, but it can still be a problem even if it's just thermal expansion. IMO: A wrench is the best way to relieve it because it's more controlled.
As a farmer I actually hate the quick connect ag couplers(the ones with no collar) on big tractors because they get worn out and like to pop out. It's very frustrating having to climb down out of the cab amd go plug the hydraulics back in so you can fold your tillage implement, etc.
Very informative video. I hope to add a third function and two rear circuits soon. I want a hydraulic top link and a hydraulic side link. Box blade work will be sooooo much easier.
How do I hook up a hydraulic wood splitter too my Mahindra 2655. I have two rear remotes one hook up to a hydraulic top link the other is open. The rear remote control valve is detent type ( double acting with detent. Im worried I will ruin the hydraulics if not hooked up right. TIA
Not necessary. Farmers aren't exactly clean freaks and hydraulic system damage from getting dirt in the couplers is almost unheard of. Sure, do your best not to cram dirt in there but a little bit won't hurt anything at all. It all gets filtered before it goes back through the pump.
@outlander330cc You do what you want, 40 years of heavy equipment mechanic, and farm equipment mechanic, says you are going to cause yourself some very expensive Repairs
Great video. I need to get me some of those hose wraps. As for your large orange machine couplers, Deere has the similar style couplers on their larger 5 series machines. I call it a push/pull style coupler, I am sure there is a fancy marketing name for it. That 5115M you sold me a couple years ago has that same style coupler. Glad to hear it was just a plugged filter on the 4720.
Hi Courtney, I had a White 2 105 for several years. Hydraulics are closed centre and locked when engine was off so sometimes almost impossible to disconnect if there was pressure in the system. What is the answer? Do any small tractor have closed centre systems?
I have never found dustcovers that actually stay put. Seems like as soon as they get hydro fluid on them they come off to easy. And they always get gunky leaving me to clean them off each time. Might as well just clean the couplers off instead.
I have a great hydraulic fitting identification chart I can share if you provide an email address. It matches up to the fittings in actual size so you lay the fitting over top of the image to I.D. them.
A bunch of the old tractors has the push in copper like the Kubota both my Oliver’s farmall 130 farmall m both my bigger fords and my new massy Ferguson has them from factory I have added them to my Kubota and my allis chamler tractors but pioneer sales at kit to add them to tractors
That plastic wraparound looks like it might save my hydraulic lines from uv ( sun ) damage . I literally have to replace a least one hydraulic line every time I hookup the backhoe . Dont use it very often , so the hoses always crack , then leak , then go ta hell
I have the flat face couplers on my sawmill and love them. Though I still carry a clean rag to wipe them off, Dad always taught us to wipe off hydraulic connectors so I keep that practice. I agree that the pin and whatchacallit is there for safety reasons. One of the guys helping me didn’t turn it and we were lifting a log when it came apart…hydraulic fluid flew out for a couple seconds but it hit him in the eye, lesson learned The link to hose end chamber is missing the “b” in chamber btw😂
Walked into a Home Depot here in Georgia last week and there was an ad for Summit tractors. Buy them here! Who is going to service it or have local spare parts. Not HD. No thank you. I have 3 New Holland dealers within 25 minutes of my farm.
The first time i took off the backhoe from my tractor I didnt relieve the pressure. Oh lord that was an learning experience. I ended up loosening the fitting just enough to bleed off a touch of pressure. Haven't forgot sense and I hope I never do.
Unfortunately, hooking the male to female hydraulic doesn't ensure they are easy to disconnect. In fact, I found the only benefit is that it keeps the connections clean (like using a plastic cap). Last season, when I stored everything for us winter, I did just that with everything I could. This summer, I tried to use the accessories, and ALL of them were totally pressurized, and the only way I got many of them to work was to unscrew something on the hose. If you have a 3rd function or electric diverter, you need the tractor but the key on, to let the pressure off of the lines.
Depends on how it is wired. Mine works with the key off.
If you park an attachment in the winter and try to hook it up in middle of summer the pressure may build up with the temperature change.
Definitely so!

When hydraulic connections fit it feels satisfying. When they don’t connect it is so annoying.
Why are the connectors on the back of the Kubota not an industry standard?
Made the mistake of not relieving the pressure a few times. I initially didn’t know the reason but finally found out how to prevent it.

For the 3rd function do you need a bigger tank beciase your running another hydraulic cylinder? I have a bigger older tractor that I want to do this to but I wanted to ask before I spent the money on it
No, not at all. It's really not much extra fluid in the system.
I’ve run in to this connection problem and learned to warm everything up before disconnecting any hoses.
Great tips once again. Thanks.
I appreciate it!
Dot and slot, most commonly known on other connectors as a higbee notch.
Don't come up in here with your fancy lingo. I speak simpleton! Showoff! 😂😂

Haha I know it. Except right now it'll look the exact same the next time I use it!
Keep cans of brake clean handy to clean out the couplers. One speck of dirt is all it takes to damage your hydraulic pump, or valves.
Not necessary. Farmers aren't exactly clean freaks and hydraulic system damage from getting dirt in the couplers is almost unheard of. Sure, do your best not to cram dirt in there but a little bit won't hurt anything at all. It all gets filtered before it goes back through the pump.
