My x-wife used to work in the PR dept at Warner Bros. Burbank. Prince came in one day with his band to do an impromptu little promotion concert just for the folks at Warner Bros. They played on a little patio in the back of the building. They were only supposed to play for about 30 minutes, but he wound up doing over two hours. She said it was one of those memories you divide your life by.
Was this 1991? If so, I was there as well. The promotion was for the Diamonds and Pearls album. My girlfriend at the time worked in the marketing department and told me to get to her office before they shut the doors because Prince was giving a concert. I tried to think of the best lie to tell my boss so I could get out of the office. I ended up just telling him the truth and he was a huge Prince fan as well and covered for me. Unbelievable experience.
Great quote and so true: "There's no difference between him singing and playing. It's a singular expression." - YES! (Prince fan here obvs) So cool to see you break down just what is different and interesting in this music. I don't play guitar but it's fascinating to watch you break it down and also play your own rhythms to it. Thanks so much for the breakdown.
Prince is probably the greatest artist of the last 50 years. Name anyone else who could play that many instruments at that skill level, write that much incredible music, and do it live with that much swagger. There are better single instrument players, better songwriters, and better performers, but nobody could lay claim to the entire production pipeline except Prince, in my opinion.
it always amazes me that people STILL underrate him as the elite, musical genius that he was. There are people out there that think of him like a pop star, like Michael Jackson. If they just listened to him for 10 minutes, they would realize he's more like a mix of Jimi, Stevie, and Herbie - and the sum may be greater than the parts...
Michael I'm a 70 year-old intermediate guitar player. My kids who are grown now couldn't get over it back in their teens that their old man was a Prince fan. Guy was so cool on many levels. Thanks for this one. GT

Thank you for a prince lesson!! If you can find Prince on SNL when Steve Martin was the host. Prince preformed “fury”. It truly was jaw dropping. I filmed it off the TV. Unbelievable.
Prince? Talented? Absolutely! So versatile on so many instruments. But his genius comes in on the arrangement. He knows how to arrange the simplest of things in a way that makes them sound out of this world level. He has given the fan that actually listens, instead of just hearing, so much to appreciate. The best artists do everything from their ear and their feel. I doubt they ever technically break down their work. "The more you think the less you do"

Agreed up until you put Hendrix beneath Prince. That is incorrect and Prince himself would've told you so. Jimi was second to no one. Prince was massively influenced by Hendrix and not just his guitar playing but even his clothing style and swagger. Being a guitarist I can assure you both of them were amazing instrumentalists but some of the stuff Hendrix did was almost impossible to emulate. His style is quite a bit more demanding to play than Prince's. This is coming from an old school Prince fan (started buying his albums as a kid with Controversy and saw his Purple Rain tour at the New Orleans Superdome) and till this day I say that 1999 is one of the greatest albums of all time. But guitar skills? Hendrix definately gets the nod. Cheers P[>

There is an AMAZING live version of Prince playing ‘Crimson and Clover’, and of course his playing is out of this world! Would love to see your reaction, and what you think!
I think my favorite thing about your videos is how deftly you can weave your knowledge of music theory together with passion for “all the shit that just makes ya feel good!” Sometime when hunting for that knowledge, one would instead be met at the gates of Theory-opolis by Stuffy McJazzhead who looks down their nose because the song doesn’t have 40 chord changes over a shifting time signature. When there is a nugget of wisdom wrapped in a catchy pop riff, I call it a “dog pill wrapped in cheese”. The audience may not realize the extent of awesomeness going in their ear, they just know they can shake their asses to it.
The irony is that Prince most likely was totally unaware of all the 'theory' you are analyzing but was just playing from his heart & soul looking for the "sound" he heard in his head. It's marvelous that you understand and can articulate the theory of what's happening and appreciate the genius of it all. I appreciate your videos. It seems that most of the artists who create the sounds we enjoy so much are simply trying to make tangible what they imagine in their mind. I met Tommy Emmanuel a few years ago after a concert and purchased a book of music for one of his albums as a gift for my daughter.(she was taking guitar in school and learning note by note).. I asked him to autograph it and in conversation with this wonderful gentleman learned he doesn't read a single note.( I'm a 'Chet' picker from waaay back and that was no surprise to me 😁😁)
I like the rest of your comment and you seem like a nice person, but I believe you are wrong about Prince - I don't think he was "totally unaware" about anything. It appears to me that every note on every record was meticulously thought out and executed - and I believe he knew exactly what he was doing every moment...
It's a real mistake, and a disservice to beginners, to say that these pieces are created with no theory. You learn to create easily by drilling the knowledge until you really understand it and it is second nature. It's not really magic, it's like being a magician, knowing how to do the "trick" really well and selling it.
@@greenatom It is not a disservice to tell anyone the truth. Prince's music can be analyzed and explained by those educated in music theory after the fact, but it was not created using music theory in practice. I have a friend who plays French Horn in an orchestra and is a retired HS music teacher who likes to say 'it's easy to play the blues... you just flat the 3rd.'...and he believes it to be true. 🤣 .... Some of the greatest blues players in history couldn't tell you what the '3rd' was if you asked them. Prince took piano lessons in the 7th grade, but he was already playing by age 7. He was self-taught on every instrument he played. His only "formal" education in the arts was a year of classical ballet at the Minnesota Dance Theatre through the Urban Arts Program of Minneapolis PUBLIC Schools. He never had a single class in theory. He was gifted and diligent, both are necessary. Without the 'gift' you cannot be an artist, only a mechanic. Without the 'diligence', focus, and perseverance to develop the gift you cannot be successful. What Prince accomplished was undeniable in the arts but it was not the result of a formal education in music.
@@R.L.KRANESCHRADTT Well, his father was a jazz musician, and very early on he had a mentor who took him under his wing and helped him a lot. He and his first band studied lots of records very closely.
@@greenatom All true. The only point, if you want to call it that, is Prince did not have a formal education in music theory and was essentially self-taught. An amazing talent not wasted and gone too soon. My observation is the over emphasis some have on 'formal' music education. Many simply look down their nose at those who do not have the benefit of it as if it's required to have any success. Which simply is not true. I studied music in college and have had a lot of interaction with the 'classically' minded musician crowd. Most are never really going to be very good at really playing music very many people want to hear, and even less would pay for, but often feel slighted if not given deference for their long hard studies of theory. They can analyze the heck out of what someone else does, but usually come up short on doing anything of consequence themselves.
I heard one time that an interviewer asked Eric Clapton , something to the effect of “How does it feel to be considered the greatest guitarist of all time”. He said, “I don’t know, ask Prince”
Prince albums were each different, back to back. So his guitar sounds were constantly different, too. Where is Eric Clapton's When Doves Cry or U Got The Look or Controversy or lady Cab Driver or Get It Up or 777-9311??

This!
Michael, I love Prince! Got to see him in L.A. for the Purple Rain tour. Best concert! And now, I'm starting to love your channel too! Thank you for your bravery in posting this. Glad I got to see it and hear your comments.
And along with so many others here in the comments, *please* take a look at the 2004 HOF performance AMGGW Director's Cut.

To add to my comment, I’ve always been a Prince fan from his breakout hit “I wanna be Your Lover” right on through to his last. A truly underrated musician. Thanks Michael for the reply.

Great post Michael!
Friend, I'm Brazilian and I've been following you here for a short time and from the little I've seen, you're very good on the guitar and your work is amazing! I would like you to analyze here on the channel Peter Tosh's reggae - "Jonny be good". You will notice that the variety of instruments available makes this music way too much. Success for you man!
Thanks! I think you were born to do what you do. And it doesn’t hurt that you are so handsome.
Thx :)
Love your work man. Long time subscriber. Might I suggest a reaction video to one of Wolfgang Van Halen‘s new songs from Mammoth. Maybe Mr. Ed or Empathy. Unbelievable tracks. That guy is talented!!!
Prince Shhh Paris 2011 - Fireworks really get going at 2: 14. Not sure there is an overly technical analysis here, but his guitar work just kicks you in the soul.
Paison.. we share much! Love the channel!

Goodness gracious is that PRS one of the most gorgeous guitars ever or what? You loving it Mike?
“When you hear something that sounds awesome - and you’re like ‘why does that sound so awesome? Stop. And figure it out!’” is simply some of the best advice on the planet. And now I’m going to jam on my guitar and listen to Prince. Thanks brotha. 🤘🏻
OKay, I been watching for a while and loved your "reacts" to the Colter Wall video...look into Slaid Cleaves and his song Breakfast in Hell...great story telling and some decent guitar
