This scene makes me tear up like a big ol' crybaby. Something about how Delmar delivers such spirited relief when he is saved and the beautiful singing by the congregation. One of the greatest scenes in the whole movie.
It’s interesting that one scene with a huge group of people in white singing is beautiful, calming, and hopeful and the second has the exact opposite feeling
I just now noticed that, too. In this case, it's a flock following a man in white to water for salvation, while the latter involves them following a man in red to fire for damnation. The best and worst of humanity, religion, and America, side by side.
Made even more interesting by that Klan scene denouncing "Jews" and "Catholics," which includes the Coens, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Tarturro! Like they knew the hypocrisy there.
What I love about this scene, besides Delmar’s sheer, adorable joy, is how the preacher and his congregation react to the trio. They don’t ask questions or act suspicious; they welcome them without judgement. The preacher baptizes a liar and thief without hesitation, wishing to guide him to the path of righteousness. For he is the good shepherd, and he sees Delmar as another lost lamb. And that’s exactly what the congregation is: a good shepherd leading his flock to salvation and forgiveness. Perhaps that’s why they’re all wearing white, for symbolism as sheep?

It’s supposed to be during the depression guys. It was an extremely sad, desperate time in those days. All people often had was their faith. It was also a time of regret for a lot of people. I was baptized almost exactly like this a long time ago when I was 17. One thing I find interesting about this scene, is the impulsive choice by both Delmar and Pete to join in and be baptized too is not an uncommon occurrence in reality. Whoever wrote this part of the film had to have known this. It is common in these sorts of traditional ceremonies that people who have come just to watch and support the person being baptized will suddenly decide to be baptized too, right on the spot. When I was baptized, I was the only one the church had planned on doing that day. By the time we were done, 5 more people decided to get baptized too. The power of the Lord is very strong in these types of rituals. It is something I will never forget. ❤🕊✝
This film is definitely one-of-a-kind. (If you ask anyone whether or not they've seen it, and they answer "I'm not sure", they haven't seen it). It always reminds me of an opera, because the big scenes -- the baptism, the Sirens, even (ugh!) the Klan assembly -- are more like arias or set pieces than conventional movie scenes.
I don’t personally believe, but I think there’s something of beauty about the symbolism of a baptism. The washing away of past wrongdoing, forgiveness of oneself, starting anew.
I think that the way he ran into the water to be baptized is how God wants everyone to come, but it is not the water of baptism that cleanses & washes away sin, but it is the blood Jesus shed on the cross that washes away our sins, but you must receive him as lord & saviour, & confess your sins, repent of sin, & asked to forgiven of all your sins, AMEN.

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this scene... it’s not supposed to be a hopeful, beautiful religious sentiment. Our blundering protagonists intrude on a holy ritual out of a shallow desire for a quick and easy way to erase their sins, but the audience knows that it doesn’t really work that way. It’s more a satire of simplistic and shallow views of religion than glorifying baptism. The comedy comes from the irony of escaped criminals joining Christianity on a whim because they think all they have to do to be saved is put their heads under water. You should watch the whole movie before praising this as a beautiful scene of hope. It’s better than that; it’s funny.
Interesting perspective but I respectfully have to disagree because the of how the movie plays out. First the scene is meant to contrast with the klan scene, both our groups in white but as one is brought to water the other is to fire, and one based on hope and forgiveness the other is based on hate and death. Second, you say this is a jab at “quick fix” but every time one of them prays they are saved. 1st when the warden, the films embodiment of the devil, is going to hang one of them they say “god forgive me” and he stops, then later the same guy asks god to save him Clooney’s character appears and saves him, then finally at the end when Clooney’s character prays the flood comes and stops them all from being hanged (through more magic realism methods). I personally don’t see this scene as satire and the film does show a genuine nature to this scene, it even jokes during the scene where Clooney’s character is trying to analyze/mock this whole event the rest of the gang just sorta ignore him.
@@christopherauzenne5023 the Coen brothers’ movies are certainly open to interpretation. You could see it as contrasting with the Klan scene, or possibly even as likening one to the other as two sides of the same coin. The KKK considered themselves Christians and both scenes are examples of gatherings of people united under a strict and specific ideology, for good and/or evil. I don’t personally see the ‘miracles’ that occur later as a kind of simplistic statement that prayer works or something so on the nose but the ambiguity of the movie is what makes it interesting to watch (and discuss). It’s been way too long since I saw it, I think I’m due for a rewatch
the song is beautiful, but the theology is wretched. baptism is not an immediate forgiveness of all sins; it is a sign of forgiveness and acceptance into the covenant. forgiveness comes with repentance and turnign to Christ, two things this guy obviously has not done
IIRC, the earliest version of this hymn was written by enslaved African-Americans, and was in part a coded message for those trying to escape on the Underground Railroad. The first line originally contained the phrase "down IN the river," instructing escapees to stay in the water to avoid leaving a scent for bounty-hunters' dogs to pick up. The "starry crown" may have been a reference to using the stars to find the cardinal directions and thus head north, similar to "Follow the Drinking Gourd." There's definitely an underlying religious theme of requesting guidance/protection from God, but in a very particular context. Something is lost when this song gets picked up and performed by white people (like in this clip) who aren't aware of where it came from.

Let's go down, come on down
O sinners, let's go down
Down in the river to pray
As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way!
Everyone knows, even atheists admit it's a religious hymn. Sinners? Good Lord show me the way? Robe and Crown? Study that good ol' way? Screams Christianity.
Evil s*** in the south? what the hell is in your picture the South has more Christians in my opinion
