    We may not agree on absolutely everything. But I've been really appreciating all the shotgun stuff you've been putting out lately. Everyone talks about rifles and PCCs and even handguns these days but shotguns have been neglected a lot in recent years. So I can appreciate the work towards educating people on their use and effectiveness.

    Yesterdays video got me all excited... Ammo prices and availability are insane and I'm totally rationing. I dry fire a lot, but noticed the flinch come back after not going to the range for several weeks. So I'm going to go and resist the urge to burn through boxes....If you were to limit yourself to 10-20 rounds on the range, how would you use them?

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Practice the most important things. If you can draw from a holster I would practice draw to first shot, making sure to get a good sight picture after the shot. Do that 4 times. Then practice draw to 2 shots on a smaller target like a head box. Do that 5 times. Then practice shooting one target, transitioning to a second target, and shooting once. Do that 3 times. 20 rounds, lots of skills honed in live fire.

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      On modern pistol mags and rifle mags, yes it's cycles that are the real worry. Remember though that shotgun tech is old school and most of these long shotgun tube springs are not made with modern steel but are older wire-type springs. They WILL take a set if left fully compressed for too too long.

      @@ASPextra I got that part (and I should have use 'one' instead of 'you' in my original comment). And as I was saying, if you weren't going to use it in the demo, take it off.
      I have seen way too many defense, police, crime, and unrest videos with defenders danging an unused sling which is a safety issue. It is sorta like always demonstrating good muzzle discipline even when handling an unloaded weapon or with the safety on. It teaches through continuous exposure (and example) to the right 'culture' of handling the gun.
      On a similar topic, an instructor, or other role-model should never be seen using a crappy holster. I have even seen professionals (off-duty police/military) using a crappy/floppy holster with poor retention or causing them to root around with the muzzle (pointing at themselves with loaded gun) struggling to re-holster. I even saw an off-duty officer loose a loaded gun from an uncle mike's holster.
      Good (and proper use) of slings and holsters are the very next tier of safety after the fundamentals of finger/muzzle/target.
      Keep up the good work. I have picked up some valuable info and learned stuff from your channel.

      I think that there is no point at all. Legally speaking there is no difference between the 2 types of ammunition (at least to my knowledge, I’m not a lawyer, check your local laws) but if you need that first shot to be a tight group and immediately incapacitating, bird shot ain’t gonna do it. There is no real reason why I need my home defense shotgun loaded with bird. If you are concerned about overpenetration, then load with #4 buck. It’s been shown to lose enough velocity after going through 2 layers of sheet rock to be considered less than lethal in many cases. If you hand load, then load that sucker in a federal flight control wad and cup. But to my knowledge the old adage of bird bird buck buck slug, is just that. Old outdated information.

    • @reptiles900
      @reptiles900 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's too much thinking. Once you get a dump of adrenaline and you're about to be faced with kill or be killed, you just want to pump and go with 7 rounds no thinking required. 00 buckshot or similar. You lose a lot of fine motor skills and gain gross motor strength under adrenaline stress, you could easily fumble the shell and get killed in the distraction.

    • @timinwsac

    I have my sling attached to the factory lug on the bottom rear of the stock and the front always goes forward. I've been thinking about buying a ring that goes between the stock and receiver, or putting another lug on the side but I think that maybe too much of a weak point in the plastic.

      A harness/attachment point like John has on his in this video is one option. This allows you to attach the sling on the side of the stock instead of the bottom stud. Condition One is the _only_ way I keep my defensive ready tools.
    To clarify even further, I specifically keep our HD shotgun in Condition One with one minor adjustment. While we _always_ keep one in the chamber; with our shotgun we choose to simply keep the action on a “half pump”.
    This means that the pump is neither fully seated in the ‘ready to fire’ position nor is it completely locked back as if you were cycling a round.
    The safety being “ON” the entire time btw. It’s the only tool we keep staged in this manner. Everything else is in standard Condition Zero ready.
    Now if I can only convince my wife to train more with the 12ga. She would run right past it to get to her preferred home defense option. We were looking for a 20ga Mossberg for her, but we all know it is nearly impossible to find such a thing these days.

    My definition of " cruiser/closet SAFE" is: empty chamber, mag tube charged, action locked, safety off. Yes, this requires one to hit the slide release in order to cycle the action...no issue whatsoever for me, as that is baked in to my training. This way, no matter what happens, same protocol.

    So, for me personally, this just isn’t safe. In my home, I don’t have space for a safe. (Very very small house) and I often times have my nephews over who are 7&9 respectively. They both like guns and are very interested in them. They know the rules of safe firearms handling and know better than to touch a gun without permission. But I can’t be too careful. I leave the action locked. I personally don’t believe that they will be capable of easily figuring out how to unlock the action and then run the pump, and fire. But that means I’ve got to be very mindful of the condition my weapon is in if I ever need it. It’s not ideal, but I think it’s the best I can do in my current situation. When I have a place where I can actually mount things to the walls, I’ll get a shotgun rack and hang that sucker 6 feet off the ground so as to eliminate this issue.

    For both semi and pump, the sound of racking one will give away your position and your element of surprise. You're letting the bad guy know you know he's there and letting him prepare for a fight. Why lose your tactical advantage? Keep one in the pipe just like a pistol and keep it in a safe spot.

      Tactical Advantage is how people get killed like your kid who comes home from college or the drunk neighbor from a block over or your spouse who couldn't sleep. 1st step, call 911, Second step start yelling I'm Armed, Leave, I don't want to shoot you. Make sure you have lights on and or a light on The shotgun so you know what your shooting at. ( don't want that 7 years bad luck by blowing away a mirror) I don't want to shoot someone, I want them exciting as fast as they can. Shoot the wrong person you have to live with it for the rest of your life likely while in prison.

      John wants you to know that he has his hearing protection on. Your ears are important to protect, especially when at an enclosed range. He has a video on what kind they are and why he uses them. It's part of the safety package he keeps. No, hes not gay. He probably shoots more than a lot of people and he is constantly training students in both proper use and their shooting skills. He makes no bones about proper ear protection because he wants you to have good hearing skills when you get older without ringing or other problems to deal with.

    I strongly disagree with you. Do you carry a CCW without one in the chamber? Of course not! Number one, racking the action gives away your position. Number two, it takes away valuable time that you might not have. Number three, you might not be able to cycle the action at that point in time. Number four, in the heat of the moment you might short stroke the action, causing a malfunction.
