Due to strong colors and oft iconic subjects such a bubble gum machines, dessert case repetition of cakes. The NY 60’s critics placed that on him. He saw himself as more then that. We here see him as Bay Area Figurative though his style taken by a hyped color work, that is much the atmospheric effect here. Due to our proximity to the bay and the Pacific oceans fog/sun mystical effect producing wild pastel colors! A fanatical fascination with contour and loose but well put color allowed him to enter a unique space between graphic and painterly. He taught for years at UC Davis not far from us (Benicia). He was not directly allied with the original SF/Bay Area Abstract movement; Diebencorn, Park, Bishchoff, Weeks, etc. (first generation) Bruce MaGaw, Manual Nuri, Joan Brown, etc. (second generation). I studied under Bruce MaGaw at SFAI. To my point his connection is to that groups “idea” of unrecognizable (abstract) flatness lilting into recognizable (realistic) form.

@@contemporaryartissue that’s not a good enough answer. Excellent video, thanks. The narrator of this video displays a good example of what in the art world is called Art speak: Artspeak (often derogatory) The specialist vocabulary and language associated with art and artists, especially when seen as complicated or pretentious. An Artist's Art is meant to speak/communicate to the audience or viewer through the artist's art not interpreted or explained by a critic or presenter. By all means, share your feelings, and thoughts, good or bad Etc...when talking to friends other collectors, and associates. But when speaking to Art brokers, dealers, Gallerists, Advisors, Etc... Beware, this is one reason there is such elitist manipulation in the ART market today. If you are a collector like me listen to your heart, after all, if it's your money and it's going to hang on your wall and be a True reflection of you and your taste, not someone else, Beware !
A sad truth indeed... However, diversity is on the rise and with the current generations of artists we notice a very equal balance when it comes to gender. Thank you for tuning in!
Women don't care about pushing the limits or antagonize art institutions, usually. So they often end up doing decorative arts and crafts, but not the innovative type. They rarely take risks in life, because their biology is focused on more important things like safety and raising children. It's no surprise that you saw mostly men in those top ratings. It's natural. I'm a woman, 43 and speaking from experience living in traditional Eastern European society and modern North America 🇨🇦

I see from your own pinned post that you're embarrassed by lack of diversity. Rather than directing readers to another article, why not do better with this one? This is so well-made that it seems patently obvious that you could do better. In the interim, we must give thanks for the existence of Mehretu, lest all hallow'd artists be ordained in the image of the narrator.
Yes, a very good question and valid point. The reason why I do not meddle with these research results is because we aim to be as objective and art scientific as possible. Via this methodology, the Artfacts algorithm is able to provide a reasoned selection of the most prominent artists today. However, these top results still need to be interpreted with a critical pair of eyes and mind. The main reason why we adore using the Artfacts algorithm is that it enables us to approach fame/popularity/pertinence objectively. Otherwise, depending on the person who creates the list, it would be entirely different. If I made them, I would be imposing my personal opinion on you, which I don't feel comfortable with. Instead, with this algorithm, we can create these rankings in a very coherent and consistent manner. It crawls all artists in the world, so every artist is considered, and it can often show a discrepancy between our perception of the fame of a specific artist versus reality
@@contemporaryartissue I get it. And... your article is called "A Complete Survey" including "the 12 most important artists". Now that does sound like a worthy project, be it a book or an audiovisual piece. And I do believe you're up to it. It sounds to me like you're as uncomfortable with the imposed parameters as I am.
Female artists don't produce such garbage, as they're focused on harmony and beauty, as they create stunning decorative art and crafts. Men often take risk, don't care about beauty or practicality of their work and enjoy antagonizing art institutions and people in general. So, this rating of hideous garbage is mostly done by biological males.
Yes, we have included Mamma Andersson it the more extensive selection of the article: www.contemporaryartissue.com/the-best-contemporary-landscape-painting-a-complete-survey/ Great artist!
Well, the West is the most modern place and it leads the world. White men did contribute the most in human evolution. They're also likely to push the limits by taking risk, unlike women (who are focused on safety, beauty, harmony and raising children). Those are the reasons for this list. I'm happy that women didn't produce anything hideous enough to make it on this list.
How does one then define landscape? Having figures in a landscape as a reference should not preclude any work of art as being a landscape , house's, boats on the shore are well known in the history of painting in many a famous landscape work. And in fact Beksinski does have work without any figures at all. But he is a grim painter and that can be a turn off in today's overly sensitive world.
@@TruthSetsUfree100 I like a grim painter to be honest, Beksinski simply did not end up in top results of our survey. I strongly believe he is an underrated artist. White men are leading the human evolution, so they are taking risks and push their limits. Read history, don't be so ignorant. Women like safety, harmony and beauty, so they didn't make it to this hideous garbage contest 😂
Don't know when I have last heard so much verbal diarrhea ??? A constant referal to various genres which describe people who cannot actually paint !!! Minimilast being the worst ! Really a case of "the emperors new clothes "
Most are hideous, I agree 😂 With some interesting ones, but those are minority. Modern artists have art experience of a toddler and it truly shows in their fake art.
Hi Ivan, no there sure is! They simply did not end up in the top 12 results, hence not being presented in this video. We simply presented the top results of our survey. Good critical comment though, so thank you for tuning in!
@@contemporaryartissue who did you ask? The results are neither accurate nor reflective of reality (much less "scientific") if the people who are asked are the people who will only know or think of white men as "real artists" or "important" artists. A biased sampling obviously.
We have anticipated these conclusions in our pinned comment, which I would like to refer to. We strongly promote diversity and inclusivity. @@contemporaryartissue yes. and still a long way to go. kind of proves my theory... the art system is not inclusive in its historic as well as current DNA. your data will find men predominantly in all of your lists. guess why? sigh.
@@gabrielepichler The reason why our data results in predominantly men in our lists is not because our algorithm discriminates, however it illustrates the art world still does. This is a very important difference of course. Doing so we measure how the diversity is changing, think of our list of artists born after 1970, which was very balanced, whereas other lists with older generations, we see the opposite.

Everything is now ridiculously abstract. These contemporary Abstractions is when you have a concept that you desperately need to convey but you dont know really how to paint well. Cant they be a little more subtle in there abstraction. Show off some skills in actual painting.
I disagree on this one, especially with landscape painting. If we would focus on skill and mimesis instead of a refreshing visual take on landscape painting-involving abstraction-the genre would become obsolete.
It's just hideous to me, because I've been exposed to high quality art throughout my life and developed rather refined taste. Most stuff in this video is absolute garbage 😂 I'd never pretend to like it, because I have my own eyes and brain. What a scam, this fake "art" 😂
Awful prononciation of Adrian Ghenie's name. You make it sound like 'genie in a bottle'. Do some research, try the speak feature from google translate, select Romanian.
Hi Alex, we are aware of this issue. In fact, we know the Romanian art scene pretty well, including how the names should be pronounced. The problem is with this narrator that it is an AI voice. The language is set the English, so we can not reproduce sounds that are not in the English language, nor can we switch to another voice in the middle of the video. But now things are better as we host our video's ourselves, instead of using an AI voice. In any case, thank you for tuning in!

I'm glad you guys are taking steps to improve. I will say this, its not about specifically Africans or the lack of. Its about every body, else. Let me give you an example, think about the American world series, how is it a world series If only one country takes part. We are simply presenting the top results from our survey, and as often, the top tiers of the art world still lack diversity. However, we strongly believe and notice things are shifting for the better. Feel free to read the entire article online, discover a broader selection of artists (link in description).
White men are leading the human evolution, so they are taking risks and push their limits. Read history, don't be so ignorant. Women like safety, harmony and beauty, so they didn't make it to this hideous garbage contest 😂
@@contemporaryartissue Not good enough.
Don't know when I have last heard so much verbal diarrhea ??? A constant referal to various genres which describe people who cannot actually paint !!! Minimilast being the worst ! Really a case of "the emperors new clothes "
Yes, you're 100% correct. The king in fact is nakеd and that hideous garbage is definitely not art. What a scam! 😂
What these paintings all seem to have in common: They're very large, and really hideous "landscapes". What a crock the art world has become.
Most are hideous, I agree 😂 With some interesting ones, but those are minority. Modern artists have art experience of a toddler and it truly shows in their fake art.
@@mikesamovarov4054 You nailed it!
What a load of old tosh. Mumbo jumbo & meaningless non speak, the works featured are banal in the extreme.
Once again, only 1 woman included.
Women don't make garbage like that 😂 They like harmony and beauty, on average.
It seems to me that there is not art in south america, africa and asia. What a deception review!!!
It’s all junk
temporary CON ARTIST Landscape PaintingS ?
Yes, it's complete garbage. Which is obvious 😂
And not one of them a female... disappointing...
PLEASE work on your pronounciation of terms and specially NAMES! this ist no advertising for you!!! rgds h.
At the time, we still used a text to speach AI voice, hence the terrible pronounciation of the names... Thank you for the feedback!
Wow…. Did I miscount or was there seriously only ONE woman on this list???
Please read our pinned comment concerning this matter. Thank you for tuning in!
Women don't normally create pathetic garbage like these scam artists 😂
Can't stand text to voice. Bye.
only one woman. this art system and your list is still in the dark ages.
We have anticipated these conclusions in our pinned comment, which I would like to refer to. We strongly promote diversity and inclusivity. However, when we have done a survey, we will not meddle with the results of course, otherwise the survey would lose its art scientific value. We would have loved to see more female artists in this list!
Women don't make such garbage 😂
All men. I guess there are no women landscape painters.
Hi Susan, thank you for tuning in. We have anticipated these conclusions in our pinned comment, which I would like to refer to. We strongly promote diversity and inclusivity. Women don't make uggly сrар like that 😂
Everything is now ridiculously abstract.
Too many men

And thats the main problem not the fact all the artists are not that good
Only men can produce such сrаp 😂
Un 0 a todos. Todo basado en el azar, a ver que pasa. Ninguna maestría
Exactly! Pile of garbage, what a scam 😂
There are no woman artists here at all. That’s disappointing.
Hi there Bethany, thank you for tuning in and for your critical comment. As we have stated in the pinned comment, we anticipated these conclusions whereas we simply have presented the top results from our survey. We are doing are very best to promote more diversity in the art world: we critically discuss the lack of diversity time and time again with these top lists, for instance, we have created a separate video and the greatest female artists. We strongly promote diversity. But not diversity for the sake of diversity. If these are the results from our survey, then we can only present these results. Altering them would make the selection less valuable from an art scientific perspective.
just men? Please do better
Please read the pinned comment in which we address this issue. Thank you for tuning in
Only white men feature on this channel, and a white woman or two. *clicking on don't recommend*
Dear Inotila, sorry to hear you feel this way. However, as I have stated in the pinned comment, we anticipated these conclusions whereas we simply have presented the top results from our survey. We are doing are very best to promote more diversity in the art world: we critically discuss the lack of diversity time and time again with these top lists, we have created a separate video and the greatest female artists, we have recently published an article on African painters you need to know on our site, which will be featured in a video in two weeks time... I hope this might be helpful for you
I'm glad you guys are taking steps to improve. I will say this, its not about specifically Africans or the lack of. Its about every body, else. Let me give you an example, think about the American world series, how is it a world series If only one country takes part. How is a "survey" a legitimate/complete top list of it didn't cover all that fall in the category of artist. My issue is not with the list, im sure those artist are great, but to call them the most important is a big claim.
@@inotilaatinghaamwa9333 Hi there, I am not familiar with the American World Series. I think I understand what you mean, however, our algorithm crawls all artists across the world, encompassing every continent, country or city. By measuring their influence in the art world (number of shows at major institutions, retrospectives, exposure in major art publications, biennales, auction results, etc.), a selection of top results emerges of the artists who are statistically the most important, which is the selection we have presented here.
@@contemporaryartissue okay, i understand now. Keep uo the good work!
@@inotilaatinghaamwa9333 Thank you Inotila!
