    While sugar is easy to spot in candy, soft drinks and ice cream, it also hides out in foods you might not expect -- including peanut butter, pasta sauce and even bologna! Robert Lustig decodes confusing labels and sugar's many aliases to help determine just how much of that sweet carbohydrate makes its way into our diets.

      BaadBoy's Playhouse Well, we can take time to learn how to read them and what exactly each of the things are. My fifth grade teacher taught us how to read nutrition labels and then she taught us what each thing meant. She explained carbs to us, fiber, the different types of fats and all that stuff to us. I knew how to generally read the labels before then but I didn't know exactly what it meant. So if other schools aren't doing this already, they should teach us how to read the labels. That way we are being an advocate for our own health!

      Sometimes, companies can lie

    • @griffingreenberg1922
      @griffingreenberg1922 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Companies can and do lie all the time, but only about things that are in their best interest to lie about. If you lie on nutrition facts, where regulatory agencies like FDA and USDA can easily discover your lie and demand that you pull all of your products (at enormous cost to the offending company) and correct the labels (as well as fine you lots of money for deceiving customers), you are committing a very stupid and obvious crime. In fact, food products can't even go to market before regulators have had a chance to verify the information on these labels, so companies would have to change these labels after the fact and hope that no one notices the change on, in the case of some products, millions and millions of units. Even greedy companies wouldn't do this intentionally, as it's incredibly risky and the benefit is really pretty minimal (most people don't read nutrition labels anyway, so lying on them only lets you trick a small number of people). This is very basic information, you can read more about how this works online really easily (www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/GuidanceDocumentsRegulatoryInformation/LabelingNutrition/default.htm).

      as a vegan i try to eat mostly “whole foods” and as little of the processed foods as i can. for me, foods like vegan nuggets are a treat in the same category as icecream and chips and should only be enjoyed once in a while to stay healthy

    • @flandrescarlet506
      @flandrescarlet506 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should be noted that any plant products you eat will naturally contain sugar. Plants produce sugar as a byproduct of photosynthesis, so if you're eating plant products such as a salad, you're eating sugar. As the sugar is naturally occurring this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and your body needs sugar for energy anyways. But it's important to know how much of the sugar in plant-based meat comes from the plants or from manufacturers adding it.

      Difficult to avoid? Here's how: buy a bag of dried beans that has only one ingredient: beans. Pick and wash and soak overnight. Cook the next day with real paprika, real peppers, real onions, real garlic, and a side of brown rice, with a nice fresh salad that you sprinkle with your own bottle of olive oil and a squirt of lemon and apple cider vinegar, and enjoy the palate delight that real food is. You know exactly what's in it because you put it there. So simple and tasty. The possibilities are endless and you don't need that bs vegan meat to enjoy real vegetarian food.

    A couple details here for your health:
    Glucose is brain food, it's what every carbohydrate eventually breaks down to in your body. Glucose is also destroyed by stomach acid and absorbed very quickly. Your body works HARD to keep your blood free of sugars by producing insulin, but over time, this can damage your cells, making them insulin resistant (diabetes). When sugar is absorbed quickly, and insulin is produced to clear it, you have a short burst of energy usually followed by a crash. This can also influence moods.
    Mostly this is about timing. The longer it takes the sugar to get into your bloodstream, the lower the insulin level needed to clear it out. Simple carbohydrates absorb faster than complex carbohydrates, but all carbohydrates are forms of sugar.
    As your insulin level rises, when the sugar is too much for your body to metabolise out, your body responds by storing some of that extra carbohydrate as fat. This can quickly lead to obesity. A good rule of thumb is to start reducing the number of simple AND complex carbohydrates in your diet, emphasizing complex when you have to. This means paying attention to labels. Skipping the sandwich, opting for lower starch vegetables and meats with an occasional piece of fruit as a main diet. This means vegetables at every single meal, lean meats at most meals. A pitfall people tend to fall into is desserts and breads. You can have a slice of bread (a single serving) once a week with little to no damage, or a sugary treat after a high fiber meal once or twice a month. Having an everyday "little treat" is physically VERY damaging, and should be avoided. This is a guideline for life, not a diet to get thin for the summer then go back to eating crap and wonder why you balloon up.

    It has many different names which aren't listed on the nutrition label, but are cleverly on the ingredients label. While product labels list total sugar content, manufacturers are not required to say whether that total includes added sugar, which makes it difficult to know how much of the total comes from added sugar and how much is naturally occurring in ingredients such as fruit or milk.

    • @porkinitup210
      @porkinitup210 10 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      SymbolX except that completely misses the point of the entire video and what it's trying to get across.... If you're actually trying to say fruits arn't healthy, you are nuts. Ya they have sugar, but we also absolutely need sugar to survive. Carbs is where we get most of the sugar in our diets, but if you eat nothing but Carbs, it can be really harsh on your system, leading to an increased risk of diabetes. Some Sugar (glucose and fructose) aren't bad for you at all outside of huge amounts. Sucrous, Maltose, Maltodextrose, high fructose Corn Syrup, and many more are bad due to the processes our body has to go through to break it down, as well as the interaction those sugars can have with the bacteria in our bodies ( for example, sucrose is directly involved in the development of Biofilms in your mouth, which are the cause of cavities).
      Science can do a great many things, but our modifications of food are not a very good application. Sugars produced chemically, that our bodies inevitable can't be used to, can cause some serious problems. Try to eat more natural foods, as they are more likely to be healthy.... unless they are genetically modified, as most foods are xD... its hard to win

    • @symbolxchannel

      porkinitup210 I know what sugars are all about… I have studied in biology & organic chemistry in CÉGEP…

    Any meat you buy (in USA) that isn't a basic cut, has added sugar in it. Anything that is process, even a little, has sugar. Even then, good luck finding a hamsteak that doesn't have extra sugar. Sausages, scrapple, any canned meat, meat patties, ground meats... all have added sugar. Some brands of jerky have more sugar than it does meat. Found all this out when I flirted with Keto a few years ago - Every meat I found had to be crossed off the list.

    Sugar is also highly addicitive which is very difficult to overcome. But if you can discipline yourself to stop the addiction, in a short time you can break the habit and greatly improve your health. For me it was soda, fruit juices, gatorade, pastries, candy, breads, etc. For drinks, I replaced with sparkling lemon water. For the other things, I used whole fruits and nuts. I like cashew, peasnuts, and almonds. Anything is better than candy and pastries. Before long, the addiction was broken. I lost weight, feel better, and I am pretty sure my other health indicators have improved - like insulin resistance.

    A little common sense goes a long way.
    American food does have more sugar in it. Beans are sweet, ribs are sweet, condiments are sweet. It must be a carry over from the time when a single sugar lump or loaf would have to last several months so that people tended to over compensate from lean times.
    I happen to consume quite a bit of sugar but not in the foods I eat so it doesn't bother me or make me fat. I also take all of the supplements that I need.

    I have come across a couple of labels of products sold in the u.s. and boy, are they cryptic. In the u.e. labels are much easier to read, for instance you get the nutrients for 100 gr in every product ( and not "serving", which can vary), so you can immediately compare two labels.

    Artificial or low-calorie sweeteners are an alternative to sugar, but they must be treated carefully. They can help you cut calories, but they don't avoid the insulin spike that accompanies sweet foods (so they don't help avoid diabetes) and if you don't drink them with food or something filling, your body soon realizes it hasn't gained any calories, so it triggers your hunger response. If you're not prepared for it, you'll end up eating more calories. However, if used correctly, they can be an effective tool in losing weight or avoiding sugar.

    One thing that was said is no longer true - sugar is now being added to raw meat as well. I no longer eat meat, but I was looking for turkey to cook for my dogs, when I looked at the label and was shocked to see that sugar was being added to the raw meet.

    "That Sugar Film" is related. One teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams.
    Since there is no law requiring food products to indicate the percentage of daily requirement for sugar, they list the number of grams on the label.
    So if a drink has 12 grams of sugar, that would be like adding 3 teaspoons of sugar to the drink.
