I quit most sugar 3 weeks ago... I should have done it 25 years ago. My productivity has skyrocketed! I really can't believe how my focus has improved. I know everyone isn't the same... but if your focus improves 1/3 as much as mine has, it'll be worth it. Since I was a kid, I've eaten candy bars and/or big bags of gummies, nearly every day. Seems pretty harmless, but over the span of 30 years, your mind/body starts to fail on several fronts. I'd had brain fog for perhaps 10 years it seems... Unreal. I did it 4 weeks ago ! Didn't really quit all sugars but lowered it by more than half. And cut all industrial bars and cakes. My skin is cleaner, my mouth feels less charged, and I think I have a clearer mind too, that's why I looked for 'sugar brain effect' on youtube probably like you ! Going shopping in a major supermarket when you are on a health journey for unadulterated foods reminds me of those little brain challenges of "can you find the rabbits hidden in this picture?" After we have found maybe half of them, (food in a produce section and meat counter) we have to look harder, (by reading labels in canned, frozen and packaged goods). We might still be missing some. The food industry puts us through an obstacle course the minute we walk through the door. Junk food is interspersed throughout the apple display (caramel coating kits, apple pie crusts) all through the veggies (sour cream dips, bacon sprinkles, vegetable snacks) and through the cheese and meat aisles (instant pizza dough, cheese in a can, chili mixes loaded in sugar, white flour buns). We are stalked at the end of each aisle with cake mixes, refined oil, snacks, cereals and candy. They say to shop on the perimeter of a store to avoid all the tainted food in the middle of the store, but they are two steps ahead of us. Even in a health food store they do it. To stay healthy, you must be selective in your viewing, eat before shopping or going to a place that will sabotage your good intentions. It's everywhere.
That is illuminating! I don't mind her use of rewards, I'm trying really hard to abstain from sugary/sweet foods but it's not possible 100% of the time. I'm interpreting it to mean one-offs or very infrequent rather than I've done something good here's my reward. It's my Dad's 80th in a couple of weeks and there will be birthday cake so sure letting myself have that. But I'm not having a cake every day I think is the point!
Great talk. I'm desperately trying to get me and my teenagers off sugar. I have even more of a reason. Trying to be healthy in the west is so difficult sugar is everywhere.
I am 76 and weighed 235 on March 1, 2017. After watching FOrks over knives, I vowed to never eat another animal product or processed food again. Today, May 29th, I am now 207 pounds, no longer take medication for blood pressure or diabetes or cholesterol. I am total vegan. Sugar is toxic and it will send you to an early grave. First, stop eating animal products including meat, pork, chicken, fish and dairy including milk, icecream cheese etc.Eat only plants. The first problem with eating animals is they have no fiber. When you switch to plants you will visit the toilet much more frequently and rid your body of toxins. Next, animals do not have the MICRO nutrients our bodies need to heal themselves (Let food be thy medicine - Hypocrates). Doctors do not get trained in nutrician and upon graduactioin become pawns of the pharmacudical industry. If doctors would prescibe broccoli instead of the poisons the prescribe, there would quckly become a health epidemic instead of an obesity epidemic. Anyone interested in becoming healthy (by losing 50 pounds and keeping it off) should look for plant based doctors on youtube who have been reversing heart disease and diabetes for the past three decades by switching from pills to plants. Check out Dean Ornish, Noel Fuhrman, John McDougall, Mike Greger, Caldwell Esselstyn and his Dr son Rip, Neal Barnard, Garth Davis, Alan Goldhammer, Travis Stork, 98 year old Dr. Wareham, Ted Barnes and so many others. Stop paying for your doctor's BMW and making the drug companies rich. In 2004 science finally found the proof to show that sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocain. Read your food labels and you will notice that ALL processed food contains added sugar. So do not eat processed foods. Plants will heal what is wrong with you and your teenagers. Smooties are a great substitute for sugary foods. There is a big difference between the sugar added by corporations to make money and the fruit nature provides.
vistagraphsnet meat is good for you as long as it’s organic and pasture raised. Eggs are a superfood and are packed with many micronutrients. Giving up dairy is understandable, as it can be harmful to many people and, from nature’s perspective, we aren’t really meant to consume it. Research the carnivore diet. There are plenty of people who eat nothing but meat and are very healthy. Look at eskimos: they’ve been eating strictly meat forever and they were just fine! There are studies showing that those who consume no fiber have the most regular bowl movements. Also, Forks Over Knives has some questionable science, particularly the claim that dairy acidifies the bloodstream. I’m not saying to give up your vegan diet. If it works for you than I’m all for it! But giving up all animal products isn’t necessary to live healthily. We can agree that processed food and sugar must be cut out of the diet, and I can agree that animal products can be extremely unhealthy depending on it’s processing and how the animal was raised. Best of luck too you!
I think the key is to practice fasting. Once you get comfortable going long periods of time without eating, the idea of a sugar snack becomes very undesirable. You seek and crave foods you know will sustain you for the next 6 to 8 to 12 hours. Even fruit becomes undesirable if you plan to go long periods without eating.
Sounds like waiting for true hunger to hit. That's great and all but don't acclimate yourself to fasting everyday either. I truly believe the problem is that people aren't eating ENOUGH. Eat more vegetables, healthy soup, lean meats, whole grains, healthy fats, and FISH. People get lazy. Don't prepare ahead of time and then you are left with unhealthy choices. Or they get wrapped up in a diet mentality.
Ari Lehnen I mostly agree with you, but you can be a healthy vegan too. Actually its much easier to be a healthy vegan than an omnivore for most people.
@@arimonL Agree with you about people being lazy, and therefore making unhealthy dietary choices. However, with few women at home; with no home-ed classes in school, and no example to learn from; many do not know how to cook anymore. Lean meats are not healthy to consume.
Yes, fasting is the best and easiest way to clean out and reset the body - taste buds included - at no cost. According to SCIENCE OF FASTING documentary, there now are fasting clinics in Germany. Listened to MD Jason Fung and Alan Goldhamer D.C. and became a faster - hooked for life!
when i was a little girl my dad would say that sugar is a toxic material, I sure wish i would have listened. He was beyond his years and they didnt have google back then.
I’m in the U.K. I was eating Yorkie chocolate bars that had 27g of sugar. I started with one per day and soon progressed to 6 bars per day. That’s 162g of sugar per day just for the chocolate. It doesn’t include the other food I eat daily. This went on for about 2-3 weeks. Yikes! When I started to have trouble doing up my trousers I knew I had to stop. I have now stopped it and don’t eat any at all. It’s addictive. I know from experience.
I disagree with the conclusion: we should not treat junk food as a "reward". This implies that everything else you eat isn't as tasty and that you avoid junk food only because you should, instead of doing it because you want. That's not going to last. The key here is to find healthy foods which you enjoy eating. Believe me, there are plenty and there are many ways to prepare them to make them even tastier. Once you find healthy foods you like and start having them consistently, you will find yourself instinctively - not forcedly - avoiding junk food.
I remember not being able to resist any sweets or junk food as a child. I would eat ALL of it...fortunately the control has improved with age even though it is still challenging.

Interesting science, but I believe in abstaining from flour and sugar altogether. After a while, substituting protein snacks for any kind of sweet snacks, my cravings are all but gone. Currently, I am at day 111 of no flour or sugar and if I were to slip I would be trying to get back on track as soon as possible.

sugar as a reward , meaning sugar when taken from natural sources, such as fruits and unprocessed foods, then yes, it must be considered as a reward...
Carbs (even if just a minimal amount) are needed for your neurons and neuromuscular junctions. I hope you’re still eating fruit and veggies though, because those are carbs and very important. I’m not trying to be mean at all, I just want us all to stay healthy ❤️
@@maricamaas5555 Excuse me, I don't see where finance plays a role at all. You can eat nothing but sausages and mince patties and eggs for a week, they really don't cost much. I mean add a bit of cheese and a bit of cabbage or lettuce and tomato if you like and you have a burger without the bun. So how hard is that?
@@toni4729 According to my limited knowledge (stand to be corrected); many of the poor all over the world are on vegetarian/vegan type diets - with subsidised, refined carbs at the base; this because of neccesity, not choice. Ignorance also plays a role, since the high carb narrative had been drummed into the populace over decades, and is still well established within RD circles? As you point out: Cutting out the cheap, processed, refind substances in favour of healthy whole foods is achievable though. By taking up regular fasting, and thereby saving some money, MD Jason Fung and Megan Ramos reports how their patients are then able to invest in more wholesome foods.
Treating them as rewards deals with delayed gratification. Use these food s as reward when you achieve something like completion of a task rather then using them as staple food. This in term reduce their comsumption. Junk food as a cheat day food rather than an everyday food
Thanks for sharing this! To add to this, while marketing makes you think brown sugar is more natural than white sugar, the only difference is that brown sugar is turned to white sugar by adding phosphate! And when it comes to gut health, brown and white sugar have similar effects!
If you liked this information, you may also want to know that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming no more than 25 grams per day (or 6 teaspoons) of added sugar. This is the amount of added sugar found in 1 cup of most orange juices, 1 container of yogurt, a 3 inch donut 2 tablespoons of honey barbecue sauce, or ½ a small brownie!
yeah i wonder if quitting sugar is like quitting dope. I have been really cutting back. I find that I get weak moments when I really just want to eat some kind of pick me up food. Then if I do, I bounce back, and feel a little too good. My brain rewards sugar ingestion a little too much. It's so addicting and available and processed for max effect.
After working around desserts for 15 years, there's no doubt I have a sugar addiction. This month im not eating any desserts, candy, soda, etc, and then im doing an extended Water fast, because I need to get control back and kick this addiction mentally and physically
Did the research showing lower levels of neurogenesis in rats following a high fat diet accurately monitor the quality and type of fat? Given that fats can be beneficial or damaging if this wasnt done it would call the results into question as other good research involving natural fats, unprocessed has demonstrated the opposite on multiple occassions.Other research has also, indicated that the ratio and quality and indeed the food window over a 24 hour period are all significant factors.I believe that emphasis on only one element and in a non specific manner is partly responsible for the high degree of confusion felt by the general public. It can be more detremental to public health to emphasise incomplete isolatory hypothesis as history has already proven.
Maybe she’s using a public speaking technique of focusing on the audience as just a random bunch of colours - this makes it feel like they’re by themself so they feel more comfortable
Been off sugar completely and consuming a better balanced healthier diet. Bloating problems gone, have more energy, less hunger, less food need to become full, can walk an hour straight without any weakness. Do not lose weight to become healthy. Eat healthier to lose weight. And also avoid sugar and any professed foods and sodas!
@@EvilZeroSc It floods your brain with dopamine, causing an increase in receptors. So the number of dopamine RECEPTORS increases too. Like a drug, it then takes more and more and more dopamine to satisfy the increased number of receptors to reach the same effects, and you become desensitized to larger amounts of sugar. Sometimes it really is a bit HD like, as the growing receptors let you take more and more dopamine in. The crash after that is not fun though
Putting sugar in its place gets easier with time. With the impetus of poor circulation, family dying of dementia, losing vision, limbs, heart attacks all from diabetes turning your cardiovascular system into a mind field of heart attacks and stroke. I could go on but I won't. And if that's not enough the food industry knows what they're doing to us. God forgive them or Curse them to many generations 😢

I don't get this effect when eating junk food. I never really want it. I love my coffee in the morning, but I'd never ever be able to stomach a donut. I do get the dopamine rush when I exercise, though.
'Use sugar as a reward?' what a load of rubbish. Its what got us into this mess in the first place. Well I can see shes keeping her options open for future funding from the food companies.
well, ive been consuming lots of sugar on my diet.... therefore, my memory span is always undermining me. Thanks for letting me know how I can restore my memory capacity.
I am having difficulty with my short term memory although I had times when that wasn't a problem at all, and recently i have been eating lots of fruits in my diet. And i am having trouble to concentrate on doing tasks like answering language learning related questions.
So, if as a result of overconsuming sugar, our brain creates more dopamine receptors, what happens when we stop eating sugar all together? Do we get depressed?
When we consume sugar, our dopamine receptors downregulate. What this means is it will take more sugar to give the same level of happiness/pleasure, or in other words, the same amount will not make us feel good anymore. This downregulation what leads to the feelings of dissatisfaction or depression. When we stop eating sugar, our dopamine receptors can heal. So healthy coping mechanisms and positive things in life make us feel happy again, and we won't need an ever higher and higher dose of sugar to maintain our happiness.
I have to disagree with what she said at the end. I don't think desert should be a reward. You can eat whatever you want, everyday. It's the choices you make. Food is just food. Feed your body what will nourish you, not just what will make you skinny. Also, you won't be a slave to food when you feed your body what it needs. Get out of the diet mindset and into a healthy lifestyle.
I was eating a icecream Snickers bar while watching this. Now I feel guilty. But not TOO guilty, because icecream Snickers bars are REALLY good. Plus, I only have them every so often. . .
sugar is amazing. keeps my fitness on another lovel. keeps you moving. what about all the africans and asians eating lots of carbs and using white sugar in their tea. lean and healthy am I wrong?
First time i watched it 2 weeks ago, I immediately ordered lots of junk, I had a bad impulse to just eat whatever I wanted. Then 2 days after that, I watched a similar talk and again ordered, but this time, I didn't really know what to order. After thinking hard, I ordered 2 chicken burgers. I remember what changed was that I got sick of feeling low energy, I now eat for nutrition or nourishing my body and thats so easy. I remember the feeling of opening the app and thinking - because I had a choice to eat anything - that finally 2 burgers and I'm like thats it.. I actually don't want it. Since that day, I've cut all junk, no sugar. Just on a low carb plant based diet & I love it. The message I wanna say is there probably is a timing, an impulse which wants to be served, once you've that choice that I can have it, but I don't wanna feel that way plus the vegetables taste so good. Believe me vegetables are sweet too, once you cut out sugar. So really, watch these videos, let us see a day where you actually confront yourself that yes.. it's over.. this food isn't actually a big deal, so I'm gonna cut it and start with a healthy lifestyle diet.. Hope you have the patience to test yourself daily.. I'm swinging for the fences.. probably one year of no sugar or gluten. Thank you

It's hard to resist, perhaps, but not impossible. Better to give it a pass. I have, since March 2016. I feel so much better.
Simple fix; switch to a rice based diet.
@@glensmall9194 brown rice.. Precisely
Lynne Jackson.. When ever i crave for sugar or sugary foods.. I eat dates or jaggery.. And trust me.. It works.. Everytime 😊
vistagraphsnet meat is good for you as long as it’s organic and pasture raised.
Snake diet!!!
@@arimonL
Agree with you about people being lazy, and therefore making unhealthy dietary choices. However, with few women at home; with no home-ed classes in school, and no example to learn from; many do not know how to cook anymore.
Lean meats are not healthy to consume.
Yes, fasting is the best and easiest way to clean out and reset the body - taste buds included - at no cost.
According to SCIENCE OF FASTING documentary, there now are fasting clinics in Germany.

sugar is poison
Its toxic😵
no better way to state that
when i was a little girl my dad would say that sugar is a toxic material, I sure wish i would have listened. He was beyond his years and they didnt have google back then.
@Piercing Light oh it is! Big time
*Added refined* sugar is poison
I agree 100%. That was exactly the transformation I went through, 2.5 years ago.
I remember not being able to resist any sweets or junk food as a child. I would eat ALL of it...fortunately the control has improved with age even though it is still challenging.
It's not the brain that controls our behavior; It's what we eat. What we eat controls the brain.
Our microbiome communicates what they need.

Practical Keto addresses this and so much more.

Thanks Amy for sharing this important information...
Everything was good until her last sentence about using/thinking of these foods as a reward...really don't think that plays well into this at all.
SecretSqrlGrl007 i thought it was fine - confusion. It was appropriate.
I agree. Sugar is not a reward.
I agree completely as per my comment
sugar as a reward , meaning sugar when taken from natural sources, such as fruits and unprocessed foods, then yes, it must be considered as a reward...
I was thinking once a year in the form of birthday cake.
It's great when you give up carbohydrates altogether. It does wonders for your health and we don't all eat junk food.
Hahaha, good joke. And nobody responded yet! Yes, give up all carbs completely...and you'll have no worries about anything, ever again!
It depends on how intolerant you are to carbs, and also on one's age? Finances also plays a role.
@@toni4729
According to my limited knowledge (stand to be corrected); many of the poor all over the world are on vegetarian/vegan type diets - with subsidised, refined carbs at the base; this because of neccesity, not choice.
I have started to no longer eat processed or added sugar. I’m only eating natural sugar that is in fruits. Hopefully I can stick to it.
In moderation is key word.
its so odd to me that as a society we look upon poor choices in food or other things as a "reward"
Damn that’s deep

How long after we stop eating sugar can the inflammation process wear off?
I loved this Ted talk! Thank you for presenting to us!
Just what I needed to hear tonight! Thank you!
Treating them as rewards deals with delayed gratification. Use these food s as reward when you achieve something like completion of a task rather then using them as staple food. This in term reduce their comsumption. Junk food as a cheat day food rather than an everyday food
BLESS you ALL
Thanks for sharing this! To add to this, while marketing makes you think brown sugar is more natural than white sugar, the only difference is that brown sugar is turned to white sugar by adding phosphate! And when it comes to gut health, brown and white sugar have similar effects!
Excellent point. Treating junk food as a reward, just like our brain treats them, as opposed to a major part of our diet.
Very interesting information. Thank you, Amy!
I went zero carb 8 months ago. It was harder than quitting smoking, alcohol, or caffeine (which I all did in the past)
yeah i wonder if quitting sugar is like quitting dope. I have been really cutting back. I find that I get weak moments when I really just want to eat some kind of pick me up food. Then if I do, I bounce back, and feel a little too good. My brain rewards sugar ingestion a little too much. It's so addicting and available and processed for max effect.
Excellent, Bravo!
Interesting with all that she said and how harmful sugar is to the brain, poison food should be considered a reward?
Great talk , well delivered and very interesting
It's a big myth that healthy food doesn't taste good...I am a vegan and I eat a variety of tasty and healthy foods daily... 😋😊
After working around desserts for 15 years, there's no doubt I have a sugar addiction. This month im not eating any desserts, candy, soda, etc, and then im doing an extended Water fast, because I need to get control back and kick this addiction mentally and physically
I got rid of sugar and I feel better
I could have given you the right answer but today I am too tired

sugar is used to make products have longer shelf life also its like cocaine so yeah.
Its further worse actually

The fault is not sugar. Same as cigarette and alcohol. The problem is addiction.

I'm avoiding white rice and white flour.
Surely the number of dopamine receptors decreases with sugar addiction? Not increases?
Exactly, it decreases not increases. The more they increase, the more our perception of the world becomes HD like.
Thanks
Putting sugar in its place gets easier with time. With the impetus of poor circulation, family dying of dementia, losing vision, limbs, heart attacks all from diabetes turning your cardiovascular system into a mind field of heart attacks and stroke. I could go on but I won't. And if that's not enough the food industry knows what they're doing to us. God forgive them or Curse them to many generations 😢
Does this include sugar from fruits as well and carbohydrates?

Not eating sugar never anymore
seems like this is one of the first TED talks with so many negative comments. disappointing
follow up question: how often should we reward ourselves with a sugary snack? does non sugar "junk food" have the similar effect on the brain?

well, ive been consuming lots of sugar on my diet.... therefore, my memory span is always undermining me.

I remember what changed was that I got sick of feeling low energy,
I now eat for nutrition or nourishing my body and thats so easy.
