Apple should start providing the 16 inch with the normal M chip from the next generation. It’d be great to have that option for 1800. The normal chip is fast enough now for most people
For this to be a real test of the M4 and not just a test of the RAM, you should have done an M3 with 16gb. Lots of other tests out there showing that 8gb slows down even synthetic CPU and GPU tests, and much more with "real world" situations like video exports from FCP or Premiere.
Whilst I completely agree with you, I still think that a comparison of BASE models is still valid as they are a price to price comparison. Still would be good to see a 16gb version in there too.
Woah improvement on the encoders is unexpected. From my findings, the M2 Max has been the king for a while now, allowing for more streams but the M3 Max onwards seems to work best for higher resolution. I need to test this for OBS!
I believe it's because the M4 completes test early and sits idle waiting for M3 to complete the test. M4 might draw more power during the test, but it sits completely idle later on, so that might be it.

The "faster encoders" tracks on the M4 Max Im testing too (given everything equal, all rendered; any rendering increases the lead) but this is likely a function of RAM speed improvements not the engine itself. I am seeing about 25-30% faster renders overall vs the M3 Max; 15% if all is rendered before export to HEVC,

The 16GB Ram M3 MacBook Pro is not the base. It’s been replaced with the M4 16GB. The M3 MacBook Air is the new model with the 16GB base Ram. Although that is not a competitor for the Pro lineup. similar chipset, but totally different target audiences. The Pros are meant to be pushed to the max. The airs, not so much. More productivity and school related machines. Not heavy tasks like photoshop for longer durations.
Great comparison, thanks. What is better to take M4 pro 12/16 cores 48 unified memory or 14/20 cores 24 unified memory. The price for these 2 models is almost the same, but which will be better?

I feel so mixed with these results. On one hand the performance is incredible, no doubt about it that these M4's slap. The mixed feeling comes from the noise. I hate, absolutely hate fan noise. Seeing the new base M4 max out the fan, and do it so quickly is a bit disappointing. Like sure, I can have this machine do some heavy lifting, but I may not want to be in the same room while it lifts... On that same note, I feel like this will be a sign of things to come with with the M4 Pro and M4 Max MBP, and that the new MacMini may sound pretty loud under a large workload. It really makes me wonder if the M4 Max and Ultra may be the first Apple SoC's to make the Mac Studio break its silence streak. Very impressive performance, little disappointed on the fan noise.
and I want a Miata to tow a 40 foot boat @ 75 mph. =) You have options. M3 MBA, no fan less performance (you can do the thermal pad trick for better performance). MBP Pro with 2 fans, but more $$. Seems pretty simple.... just pick one. But if you are already in a position where you are gonna have a laptop do heavy lifting on the regular...
These are the most informative reviews out there. All the other big channels have gotten so lazy they barely show you anything. They'd say "the new mini has a much better speaker" but would never let you hear it yourself! Come on.
I wanna ask that should I go with A. MBP M4 PRO with Desktop (mac M4 mini) Or B. MBP M4 pro with ipad air Or C. Desktop (mac M4 pro mini) with ipad air Or D Ipad air with MBP M4 pro with desktop (mac M4 mini) A,B,C or D
The GPU max frequency went up just like the CPU max did. That's where the GPU perf bump comes from. And, that's why they use more power: P = CV^2f (Power equals capcitance times voltage-squared times frequency. Capacitance is determined by the process technology and the design).
Unless the encoders are designed by Apple to do every single bit of encoding and computations without interaction with the regular CPU core, then it is entirely possible that the encoders on the M4 aren't faster per clock than the M3, but rather that the main CPU core is the constraining factor in doing its part of the work. The ideal encoder scenario would require only setting up hardware registers to point to an area of memory for input and output and to have it report back when it is done, but reality is a bit more involved in practice.
Great video @MaxTechOfficial but the chart at 1:05 is a bit deceptive. You can now get the M3 base MBP for $1099 when it’s on sale. The old price will make it seem like this is a fair comparison, but it’s really not. Hope you’ll consider this!
Apple has certainly delivered with the M4. It's not just simple clock bump but also significant improvement to the SoC architecture. Definitely a good reason to upgrade, however the main shining star of the M4 Mac lineup is definitely Mac Mini👍
My God! This is insane! The manufacturing power of a true TSMC 3nm node meets the impeccable design skills of Apple's engineering! Man, I was planning on getting the first MacBook Air with an OLED display which was rumored to come out in 2027 but now it seems that Apple is pushing it to 2028 & I'm not willing to wait until then, so I'm going for the 2026 M6 Pro Tandem OLED 16" MacBook Pro! It will be the first ever MacBook model with OLED and the first MacBook with TSMC's 2nm architecture! I believe you're waiting for the same one, Vadim? I'm hoping for a slightly thinner & lighter design (without impacting the battery life or heat dissipation), no notch, & Face ID support!
@@R1L1. Haha, well I follow trusted analysts with accurate & proven track records with regards to Apple leaks & rumors; people like Ross Young, Ming-Chi Kuo, Mark Gurman & Jeff Pu. When more than 1 of them reports the same thing, it tends to come true. Ross in particular has a very high accuracy rate when it comes to displays in specific since he works as a display supply chain consultant, so his word means something. He gets to see future plans & reports on them. I like to follow such news because it helps me to better plan & time my purchases.
Max I am a developer and use a lot of Docker containers locally. I am trying to decide to get a great deal on a 16 inch M3 Max with 48gb and 40 GPU or a new 14 inch M4 Max with 36gb and 30 GPU. My budget is limited to $3300. The screen size is not a huge issue either way to me I have used both and it is a trade-off but like both sizes.
If you just use the base m4 MacBook Pro for light tasks, writing, surfing the internet, would the fan be loud like the stress test? And would the MacBook itself last a few years?

Watching this as I unbox my base m4 mini and pro coming from m1 mini and air m2 and i think im good for next 5 years. Love this channel ❤
Should've tested 16gb m3 MacBook pro as that's the base model now
Did you mean the MacBook Air?
The 16GB Ram M3 MacBook Pro is not the base. It’s been replaced with the M4 16GB. The M3 MacBook Air is the new model with the 16GB base Ram. Although that is not a competitor for the Pro lineup. similar chipset, but totally different target audiences. The Pros are meant to be pushed to the max. The airs, not so much. More productivity and school related machines. Not heavy tasks like photoshop for longer durations.
Were they 16gb option for the M3 MBA before this? By the way, they will make another video comparing them later likely
No it’s not. They don’t sell it anymore lol
@@tanveer9251it would be more apples to apples comparison if both had 16gb of ram
Great comparison, thanks. What is better to take M4 pro 12/16 cores 48 unified memory or 14/20 cores 24 unified memory. The price for these 2 models is almost the same, but which will be better?
great review
When is the 16 inch MacBook pro max coming. Would love to see the internals and battery placement . We also need those CPU and GPU benchmarks
So should I upgrade to M4 MacBook pro from 1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 1536 MB 8 GB ram. Is it worth it?
I hope the m4 max have better encoders also for rendering in davinci resolve compare to m1 max. We will see in the next few days
Help! 🙏🏼… I found the M3 MAX 🟡 (14 CPU, 36 GB RAM, 30 GPU) … at the same price as … the M4 PRO 🟣 (24 GB, 20 GPU, 14 CPU, which Mac should I buy? 😩
Considering that the CPU speed of the M4 Pro is a little bit better than the M3 Max.
I’m thinking the same thing. I’ve heard the M3 Max might run hot and loud under load. Might be better with the M4. I’ve seen the M4 with 512 and the M3 with 1 tb ssd.
Come on.
Great video. But, FYI, the slide that you show for Geekbench multi-core mistakenly says “Single-core” in error.
I wanna ask that should I go with
A. MBP M4 PRO with Desktop (mac M4 mini)
Or
B. MBP M4 pro with ipad air
Or
C. Desktop (mac M4 pro mini) with ipad air
Or
D Ipad air with MBP M4 pro with desktop (mac M4 mini)
A,B,C or D
M4 MacBook Pro vs M3 Pro MacBookPro please! They are similar in price now and interesting spec comparison.
Should I buy M3 Pro or M4 because they both are listed at same price right now please suggest something
Just having the extra port makes the base M4 a must over base M3. The real dilemma is between M3pro & base M4 bec they are the same price after sales.
Could you do a video comparing M1 to M4 macs. Would be interesting to see the improvements for people holding off.
Just check scores on previous videos for those tests :)
Same heat issue was spotted with the regular M4 Mac Mini when pushed to limits. The pro version was fine.
M3 Pro or M4? I have m3 pro now but I can return. I do like the extra fan and 2 gb more of ram
Should have measured loudness, great review though.....thank you :)
If the fans are getting maxed out in the pro, then how will they run the M4 in the macbook air?
Hotter than M3, which already has problem. They will need to add some larger heatsinks - M3 air just gets too hot too quickly compared to M1.
I can personally attest to tomtoc products. Own a laptop sleeve and backpack from them - high quality stuff.
New upgrade the bezel has became more thicker on m4 series😂 9:21
black vs silver, it's the same...
I'm hoping for a slightly thinner & lighter design (without impacting the battery life or heat dissipation), no notch, & Face ID support!
lol bro knows the future up to 2028 good for u.
@@LeonardoAlexivery helpful! So no 120hz on MBA for a few years still?
Max I am a developer and use a lot of Docker containers locally. I am trying to decide to get a great deal on a 16 inch M3 Max with 48gb and 40 GPU or a new 14 inch M4 Max with 36gb and 30 GPU. My budget is limited to $3300. The screen size is not a huge issue either way to me I have used both and it is a trade-off but like both sizes.
hey! do not sleep! make more!😂❤
If you just use the base m4 MacBook Pro for light tasks, writing, surfing the internet, would the fan be loud like the stress test? And would the MacBook itself last a few years?
Buy one and find out
Yes get it it will handle everything you can do times 3
So Apple were not bluffing when they said 8GB Ram is all you need. Didn't see massive difference between 8 and 16gb Ram here
I suspect that companies shorten the battery life of previous models to make the new ones seem much better
So is it just more wattage push or an actual upgrade?
which one should be best for me who will be doing programming video editing also light designing and gaming keep it up for 5 to 6 years. is it m3 air 16/1tb or macbook pro m4 base model or should i wait for m4 air? hope you'll reply my comment.
4:29 should say multi core instead of single core
Nice job!
