Thank you, Dave! He really is a hero to me. I mentioned previously that he was in Corpus Christi at a Star Trek get-together... (no conventions then) and I remember presenting a model of The Enterprise that I had made out of popsicle sticks and toothpicks, for his inspection. He wrote, "Approved by Scotty" on the underside of the primary hull and gave me a huge bear hug. This man is the reason I worked so hard in science and became a teacher, then worked in disaster assistance. What's funny is he never imagined a day that real space agencies around the world would be staffed with people that were there because of his inspiration.

Imagine all the engineers who were inspired by James Doohan's Scotty. The show Star Trek inspired me to become an engineer and I do that kind of work. I won't live to see the future that Gene Roddenberry wanted for humanity but I am contributing to that future as are all the engineers.

I met Mr. Doohan at a convention in Des Moines Is. Though slowed by illness. He was an incredible speaker. And even though I couldn't have blamed him if he didn't, He signed autographs, spoke with everyone and posed for pictures. A Wonderful Man and I'm proud to say I Met Him. R.I.P..

I found an interview Jimmy gave, here on TH-cam, when he described his most memorable "Scotty" moment. He received a letter from a female fan that was actually a suicide note. Jimmy called her and told her to meet him at a convention he was going to and she did. He doesn't say what they discussed but she agreed to meet him again at the next convention. Evidently his encouragement worked because they met up at conventions for two years. Some years later, Jimmy got a letter from the very same young woman thanking Jimmy and telling him that she has just earned a degree in electronic engineering. Even though he was beaming with a huge smile, he had tears in his eyes, recalling the moment. That's the Jimmy I remember most.

I first saw Mr. Doohan in person when he spoke and presented the Star Trek blooper reel at a college some distance from my home town. This only solidified his status as my favorite Trek character. As a child, I had identified the most with Spock, since I felt like a half-alien outsider when other kids picked on me, while I admired Dr. McCoy’s compassion and understanding and wished I could be dashing and heroic like Captain Kirk.
But Lt. Montgomery Scott-“Scotty”-was my favorite and most beloved character, someone who I thought I could more realistically aspire to be like. So it was with great excitement that some years after Mr. Doohan’s college presentation I spotted a commercial on TV for his upcoming appearance at a relatively nearby Star Trek convention. The twist is that I was watching TV on my Apple Macintosh which had an internal TV card (perhaps a model Performa 630 or something like that), and so I took a screenshot of the commercial as it showed Scotty with the date information for the convention.
Come the convention day, there I was with my screenshot printout in hand, eagerly waiting in line for my chance at obtaining a coveted signature from Mr. Doohan. He actually recognized the screenshot as coming from the TV commercial for the convention, and gladly placed his John Hancock upon it. Later, I was able to speak to him at length and even helped him carry his things out to the RV with which he was traveling the countryside.
I always treasured this encounter, the day when a Hollywood star spoke to me like a regular person and showed me the importance of maintaining humility amidst stardom. I may have identified with Spock and aspired to be Kirk, but it was Scotty and Mr. James Doohan who showed me the kind of human being I needed to be.
Bless you, “Scotty Doohan,” and may you someday “beam me up” to the heavens through which you are no doubt enjoying a very well-deserved Star Trek!

At a convention he and De attended, Jimmy sang the tune Scotty sang in the snimated 'The Lorelei Signal'. I had noticed his missing finger and mentioned that my uncle Bob got his pinky shot off by himself when he put his hand in his pocket to pull it out and it went off. He laughed and said my uncle forgot something I knew already: the safety was off! I think his son Chris-having liked "Star Trek Continues-it was filmed in Ga. too-should gave been the one who played Scotty in the JJ Abrams movies, not Simon Pegg because his son knew his dad and chr. better. Chris also resembled his dad ALOT more than Simon Pegg did!

He hid the missing finger quite well on the show. He did a lot of the voices on Star Trek as well. Very talented. I just loved it when he was in command of the enterprise. Got to see him at a Star Trek convention in 1976 and he gave a talk at a university in Toronto a few years later. Got to meet him and get an autograph. A wonderful person and a hero.

When I was in middle school, I had the great fortune of seeing him at a convention in Detroit (technically Dearborn). My mother, who attended with me, was not a Trek fan but enthusiastically joined for my sake. I’d attend several conventions and see a lot of cast members, but Mr. Doohan was the only one she admitted being star-struck over and really enjoyed hearing him speak. He also kissed her hand while signing my autograph - man was a class act and true gentleman!

But I am also a huge WWII buff! I remember during his appearance he started telling an anecdote about sharing a train with a bunch of soldiers who had just been evacuated from Dunkirk. All the Trekies tried to steer the conversation back to Star Trek... but my friend & I were like 'No! Tell us more about The Blitz!'.

@Daniel Appleton Picard was the wise veteran commander when he met Scotty, and as such he identified very readily with Commander Scott. Remember Scotty had been frozen in time so he would have been close to Picard in age and experience. Geordi saw Scotty as kind of a relic. I noticed his missing finger and he told me what happened. I told him my Uncle Bob accidently shot off his own pinky by putting his hand in his pocket to get his gun and it went off. No honourable act, of course, but it didn't stop him from playing a muzette in a Shrine Oriental Band to raise money for crippled kids. He said "Now, that's honourable" and smiled. He also sang the song he did in one of the animated episodes at this convention in Atlanta. I was sad when James died in 2005. I was glad to see that his son took a role in the first Abrams movie and then when he played his father's role in "Star Trek Continues". I think he should've played Scotty in the Abram's movies because he knew his father's role better than Simon.

If you watched "Star Trek:SFS", when he was handing some bolts or whatever to Dr.McCoy ("From one dr.to another"). You can see he's missing his finger and also when The crew is later standing on Regula-while the ship is going down-Scotty's hands are down and you can see a missing space where his middle finger would be.

Great job on this. As a veteran, I learned from my experiences, that “brave is brave” and that “it isn’t what’s on a soldier’s chest that makes them a hero, it’s what’s inside it”. But of all the soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coasties, I’ve always held in awe, the tremendous courage it took to exit a landing craft on D Day across the Normandy Beaches, in the face of hellish enemy fire, and fly combat missions in aircraft that held little or no protection. I sat in the seat of a similar B17, that my father occupied in 33 missions over Germany in WWII, and couldn’t believe how close my face was to the windshield, and how thin and unprotected the cockpit was. It was a feeling of nakedness I never felt sitting in a Huey. God a Bless those great men and women, and “Scotty” . And thanks for recognizing them.

" Compuutuhh" Lol That line is one of the main ones I think of when I think about Scotty, I am glad you mentioned it!! I think the only member of the original Star Trek show that I don't really like is Sulu. For some reason I just never cared for his character and George Takei is really not a good actor, in fact I think Takei was the weakest link in the star Trek chain. I know , I know a lot of people will disagree with me and that's OK because even though I feel that way, there still is no one else who fits the role of Sulu better lol. Scotty never changed during the TV show run and throughout the movies and I think that is what made people love his character. Let's face it, even with Kirk's ability to get through any situation, Spock's super intelligence and amazing neck pinching abilities along with Bones's way of always being that old country doctor but in a space ship - NONE of them would have gone anywhere, or have been able to escape the numerous life threatening situations with without that one MAIN character - the USS Enterprise and who made the Enterprise the awesomeness she was? That's right, our man Scotty! Despite taking multiple crippling shots from a Klingon bird pf prey, despite going through various electrical disruptions that left her seemingly crippled, who was it that got the old girl up and running every single time? Montgomery Scott, that's who. Heck Scotty was darn good he could even manage to get whales on board a hijacked Klingon Bird of Prey all the while without being able to even read Klingon! So Kirk,Spock and McCoy may have been the main stars of the series, but they would all have been wiped out after the first attack had it not been for Scotty.
"Computuh", "Cap'n there be whales on board", "I'm givin her all I got Cap'n" and of course " aye cap'n" - all phrases forever solidified in our collective memories by one of the most iconic characters of all time who was not only the hero in multiple fictitious situations, but was also a real life war hero to boot. RIP Mr. Doohan

He had the audience laughing of what differant alternative Scottys could have sounded like. Very interesting man. I'm glad I got to meet him.

Jimmy Doohan deserved and still deserves all the love and respect. He was meant to survive WWII because the universe had a purpose for him. And thank god he found it and embraced it. Not only did he entertain people, he INSPIRED people. All across the world. How humble he was also shows this story about that girl who sent him a suicide letter to which he responded and told the girl that he'd be on a Star Trek convention soon and he wanted to see her there. And that went on for a few times and he actually talked her out of that suicide thoughts and she found joy in life and a purpose. He actually saved her life. And he himself claims it being the best thing he ever did in his life. Even thinking about that story brings tears to my eyes… James Doohan was a true gift of a human being. 🖖

I still have an autographed photo of James Doohan that he signed for me at a Star Trek Convention many years ago. Showing my age aren't I? Probably worth a bit now but I ain't selling. I've been a Trekkie since the original show aired. (I think I was about six years old) I used to make "Tribbles" for friends from synthetic fur fabric and draw the "Enterprise" on the chalkboard before class at school. Later when I was a teen I got to meet Mr. Doohan, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Walter Koenig and Gene Roddenberry at various conventions. ( I was such a Spock nut) Ah the memories!

I saw Doohan in Miami back around late 1980s for a Star Trek convention. The man was full of life, and funny. I mean insanely hilarious. I remember on a talk-radio program in Florida, he was really hating on Shatner, along with George and Nichelle (who also disliked Shatner). That said, at the convention Doohan got drunk, and the drunker he was the funnier he was. Just an amazing person. RIP

I even heard it again on tv before it went off air ( which it did in the old days lol ) though I cant recall what program it was it was a uhf channel. For every geek or nerd the two shining examples of their differences could be seen with Spock and Scotty.
