She just did a tour this month in China with four major orchestras (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, xiamen) and people are getting crazy about her. She outsold ALL previous opera artists, male and female, including Anna Nebtreko, Kaufman, Cecilia bartoli, Angela Gheoghui, Renne Fleming and Kathleen Battle, Jessy, Norman, etc., and broke ALL records in sales and LIVE broadcasting (1.5 millions viewers).
It puts things into perspective now that she has passed. This is not her prime singing, but it's amazing for a 70 year old, and we're lucky she was here to sing for as long as she was.

This is the BEST and better for Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland could have ever done, respectively, in their prime. As Jurgen von Kesting has concluded that Gruberoa was a "mistake" because she belongs to the Assoluta of 19th Century, not her 20-21 century.
Saw her in Budapest yesterday in her Farewell Performance as Lucia… still the incredible technique as ever. I owe that Lady more than 40 years full of incredible Moments at the opera (Lucia, Zerbinetta, Elvira, Donna Anna, Queen of the Night, Constanze, Linda, Amina, Lucrezia, Staniera, Elisabetta, Maria Stuarda, Rosina, Norina, Gilda, Violetta, Norma, Giulietta, Anna Bolena, Gretel, Adele … ) Seems like the last one of the last generation of opera singers has abdicated. She should continue singing if she wants to ! The decline is évident, but her performance is still amazing and her voice is still so beautiful and moving. Few singers nowadays can sing better than 70-year-old Edita ! Brava !

Not as good as she used to be, but still very beautiful and in tune It's the last 30 seconds of the video that's terrible. The last high note was terrible, sure. But everything before it was in tune and still very beautiful

Saw her sing it in 1986 with Neil Shicoff, in Chicago the top rang like a bell then and even here, at that age of 70, amazing, no wobble, she also made the Complete studio Rec. of her Lucia with Shicoff in the early 1990's as in her still prime, born in 1946,she has since passed away but rest her Soul, a wonderful voice and artist (from Bratislava .) RIP. Gruberova
I don't know of another soprano who can hit a resonant high E flat at age 70. Anybody else performing this at age 70 would almost certainly transpose it

Yes, it is time for retiring but she deserves respect for her magnificent career. The singing is far from perfect but many younger soprano cannot do what she did at 70. Fabulous.
Everything, but the last note, was beautiful! I've always been a big fan. She clearly can still sing very high, but she should find some new stuff that will make her look stupendous! Her timbre is still gorgeous! With the right repertoire, I think she'd garner critical acclaim!

ANY day! I attended this very LUCIA of Edita's, having just days prior heard Peretyatko's LUCIA in Vienna ... (*if one could call it a Lucia*) - EASILY Gruberova even at 72 sang a better performance... The Viennese who grew up on Edita's Lucia were not having it, she was booed wildly and justly! I was so thankful to cleanse my ears with Edita. Granted, it was NOT (quite) the Lucia I heard her sing in the 80's - but damn close and certainly better than *most* of today's "stars". The final note obviously not pleasing, but I can agree in the acoustics of the house live (where she always shined better than recordings) it wasn't as bad as here recorded. R.I.P.
I think she is still quite okey. Ask any coloratura who are currently at their 50s, e.g. Damrau, to sing, would that be better than this? Seriously doubt.
But then again, to name a couple of coloraturas from yester-year, that FAR exceeded this when they were in the 70s: Lily Pons and Roberta Peters. But they both had the wisdom to change their repertoire!
It's impressive that she retained that bright ping in her voice at this age. I've no doubt that she still had the high E flat too, though probably it wasn't as easy as it once was, and - on this occasion - it was a wee bit flat.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but ... I feel Ms. Gruberova is doing herself a disservice. Moreover she's competing with her younger self. The camera here, in this snippet, is way too close for comfort. The facial distortions are painful to watch and the flat notes cannot be ignored or explained away. It is what it is ... Ms. Gruberova and I were born in 1946. We have grown old "together". I have experienced her beginnings at the Vienna State Opera and was most happy with her success there and her success in other opera houses. I own wonderful recordings of this singer. But it pains me to observe her recent activities. There comes a time in every artist's life when they have to realize that enough is enough. Yes, she still has adoring fans. And these fans are probably celebrating the what has been and not the what it is now. Please, Ms. Gruberova, bow out as gracefully as you can muster.
A year ago I kinda felt the same thing. But I think part of the reason why it sounded so BAD is because some stupid people on youtube keep posting her videos. With terrible sound quality. Anybody who has heard Edita live knows she sounds way better live than on recordings, where the timbre of her voice gets distorted to the point where it becomes irritating. Not to mention listening to her on recordings done using hand-held cameras and phones like this one. I think people should just stop posting her videos unless its actually filmed properly
+Bravo Luca - Please a little more respect... this is one of the legends of Bel Canto. I agree that it is perhaps time to retire, but people adore here (me one of them) and although she may not be singing in god form ... the audiences adore her.... but I do think now is the time to retire gracefully ... when she eventually does, I hope that she gives masterclasses.... I feel that Gruberova should have either moved on to new repertoire, singing wonderful recitals and less vocally demanding music, or... follow the precedent of say, Sutherland, and do a victory lap and bow out respectfully
Problem is, by now its too late for her to bow out "respectfully". Since she has drug this thing out for sooo long now, if or when she ever does retire, people will just think "Thank God! Its about time!"
Why can't these once top artist not stop, when the decline starts to be hearable? Why have they to go on and on and ruin their reputation? Gruberova once was a goddess on opera stage, but this here is nothing else but a screeching old woman. And as a former Gruberova fan, I take this amiss!
Because she is 70 ! And I also thought it was time for her to renounce to reach those very high notes...until I heard her Sonnambula aria in Wien almost two years later: not only does she reach several times the E flat in the right pitch, but she attacks the note directly, without sliding up. Conclusion: she naturally can't be always at the top, as all of us; but she still has good days with super form. And now she has proved it, she also has announced her retirement for the next year. Some will say "at least", others will cry. C'est la vie.
+Bruno PICAUDE I mean that not just at the age of 70, but all through her career she slides to the high notes ... it’s not a criticism, but perhaps it is a stylistic thing. I think she is absolutely tremendous and has done so much fior Bel Canto. One of the greatest coloratura sopranos EVER! I mean even at her age, she is singing roles that the younger, less able generation of sopranos, can only dream to sing!! And still she drives the audiences insane. I hope that once she retires she starts masterclasses... she is a living compendium of Bel Canto
She has been sliding into the notes above the C all her life. I remember her early recordings, and that was the one thing I didn't like about her singing...not hitting high notes dead on.
I've always been a great admirer of Edita Gruberova. Having said that, some artists should adjust their repertoire as they get older or retire from singing all together. Sad to hear her sing like that.

Gruberova is physically too old to sing Lucia (and made her farewell to a role she had been famous fo yesterday) but anyhow if Peretyatko (ridiculous Soubrette) or Netrebko are paid to sing roles they never had any ability to try to you better comment on doing injustice to the audience. After all Gruberova is an artist, Netrebko has a decent spinto but Peretyatko may have oral skills which have nothing to do with performing on stage

Maybe her upper arms are not pretty but compare her to far younger singers like Peretyatko, Netrebko or Damrau who cannot sing at all (and have no arms pretty enough to cover that fact)

I don't mean to be disrespectful but ... I feel Ms. Gruberova is doing herself a disservice. Moreover she's competing with her younger self. The camera here, in this snippet, is way too close for comfort. The facial distortions are painful to watch and the flat notes cannot be ignored or explained away. It is what it is ... Ms. Gruberova and I were born in 1946. We have grown old "together". I have experienced her beginnings at the Vienna State Opera and was most happy with her success there and her success in other opera houses. I own wonderful recordings of this singer. But it pains me to observe her recent activities. There comes a time in every artist's life when they have to realize that enough is enough. Yes, she still has adoring fans. And these fans are probably celebrating the what has been and not the what it is now. Please, Ms. Gruberova, bow out as gracefully as you can muster.
A year ago I kinda felt the same thing. But I think part of the reason why it sounded so BAD is because some stupid people on youtube keep posting her videos. With terrible sound quality. Anybody who has heard Edita live knows she sounds way better live than on recordings, where the timbre of her voice gets distorted to the point where it becomes irritating. Not to mention listening to her on recordings done using hand-held cameras and phones like this one. I think people should just stop posting her videos unless its actually filmed properly

+Bravo Luca - Please a little more respect... this is one of the legends of Bel Canto. I agree that it is perhaps time to retire, but people adore here (me one of them) and although she may not be singing in god form ... the audiences adore her.... but I do think now is the time to retire gracefully ... when she eventually does, I hope that she gives masterclasses.... She represents a generation of great singers who have become legends and who today’s bel cantists aren’t a fraction of what she ir.

I feel that Gruberova should have either moved on to new repertoire, singing wonderful recitals and less vocally demanding music, or... follow the precedent of say, Sutherland, and do a victory lap and bow out respectfully
Problem is, by now its too late for her to bow out "respectfully". Since she has drug this thing out for sooo long now, if or when she ever does retire, people will just think "Thank God! Its about time!"
She is not Callas, the singing has issues even at her prime.

Why can she never got a high note without sliding up
Because she is 70 ! And I also thought it was time for her to renounce to reach those very high notes...until I heard
her Sonnambula aria in Wien almost two years later: not only does she reach several times the E flat in the right pitch, but she attacks the note directly, without sliding up. Conclusion: she naturally can't be always at the top, as all of us; but she still has good days with super form. And now she has proved it, she also has announced her retirement for the next year. Some will say "at least", others will cry. C'est la vie.
+Bruno PICAUDE I mean that not just at the age of 70, but all through her career she slides to the high notes ... it’s not a criticism, but perhaps it is a stylistic thing. I think she is absolutely tremendous and has done so much fior Bel Canto. One of the greatest coloratura sopranos EVER! I mean even at her age, she is singing roles that the younger, less able generation of sopranos, can only dream to sing!! And still she drives the audiences insane. I hope that once she retires she starts masterclasses... she is a living compendium of Bel Canto
Her 80's Der Hoelle Rache is sung as written. It is written with pinpoint staccati. So it must be, as you say, a stylistic thing.
She has been sliding into the notes above the C all her life. I remember her early recordings, and that was the one thing I didn't like about her singing...not hitting high notes dead on.

I've always been a great admirer of Edita Gruberova. Having said that, some artists should adjust their repertoire as they get older or retire from singing all together. Sad to hear her sing like that.

L'acuto finale è venuto malissimo, era stonata...chissà come ha cantato Spargi d'amaro pianto? Speriamo vada presto in pensione, invece temo farà come Domingo. Grandi artiste come la Simionato, la Tebaldi e la Gencer si sono ritirate quando ancora erano "in bellezza", perchè erano grandi artiste.
She does show great technique....but it is way past retirement time; I adored her in her younger days.
Ditto! Edita: follow the examples of Callas, Sutherland and Sills and RETIRE gracefully NOW. If you must sing, choose new roles like the Countess in Nozze di Figaro.

Gruberova is physically too old to sing Lucia (and made her farewell to a role she had been famous fo yesterday) but anyhow if Peretyatko (ridiculous Soubrette) or Netrebko are paid to sing roles they never had any ability to try to you better comment on doing injustice to the audience. After all Gruberova is an artist, Netrebko has a decent spinto but Peretyatko may have oral skills which have nothing to do with performing on stage

This is very sad. A 70 year old trying to play a teenager. She is wearing sleeves so her aged upper arms don't keep time with the music. Plus, she looks like singing is very painful and judging by the last note, it is. It's time, darlin'.
Maybe her upper arms are not pretty but compare her to far younger singers like Peretyatko, Netrebko or Damrau who cannot sing at all (and have no arms pretty enough to cover that fact)
