Lucia di Lammermoor's mad scene, featuring real glass harmonica!
Diana Damrau, “the leading coloratura soprano in the world” in the words of the New York Sun, first sang Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Five years later, for this recording from Munich’s Philharmonie Gasteig, she is joined by two splendid singers from the Mediterranean: tenor Joseph Calleja as her lover Edgardo, and baritone Ludovic Tézier as her brother Enrico. Recorded live in concert in July 2013, this 2-CD set captures Diana Damrau’s first performances of Lucia di Lammermoor in Munich, the capital of her native state of Bavaria.

She not only performs with PERFECTION. She also acts each role she sings with PERFECTION. You don't get that in a lot of opera singers male or female.
I love Diana Damrau 🥰, the way each note is sung so precisely is amazing, god gave people voices shame!!!!!
I think Damrau nails it. Her "acting" is her style. It separates her from your run-of-mill, technically perfect soprano. Although her technical skill is nothing to sneeze at! She has amazing power and range. I find her very entertaining. And I love the over-the-top histrionics! This is what opera should be!
Good. It shows Diana's fans are watching music, not listening to music.
Sometimes she looks like she's orgasming while singing. Just watch her Arie di Bravura.
@@James-sh7kx Well, the “opera” is a comprehensive art.
Opera singers must act well, not only sing well.
Diana of course, she sings well, and her acting is impressing our fans.
I don’t know how professional you are in Opera music, but you need to think about that :)
Because I became an opera fan since I saw her amazing act in .
And of course I agree that there are some repatories which go well with her voice, and some others don’t.
But I love Diana, and you cannot say that simply about fans of Diana.
Every Aria is interpreted as the artist feels it. It's like a painting, opera is not just about singing it is about how you feel the piece she is drawing a painting with her voice, and she is free to do it. Once, you have such great talent you can do that. She must feel the music and one emotion is not like the other. I bet those people who come here just for the sake of critic don't even know how to apreciate a masterpiece.
It's not about emotion you tone-deaf moron. It's just we can all tell her so called "acting" is induced by her own laughable constricted vocal "technique". She literally sings every single aria in such manner.
Diana IS and will be remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of our time, very likely one of the best in history. Stop criticising her individual approach and personality. Her singing is superb and she's in command of her instrument and the performance
She tried to be something she is not. Her top is screechy and her middle is unattractive with a huge wobble. The entire instrument suffered.
Not only is she not one of the greatest, she was mediocre at best in her time. She is already quickly slipping into the past as someone who sang opera and not for any remarkable contribution she made to singing or opera.
Happy Birthday dear Diana !!!
I saw her years ago perform Lucia at The Met Opera. It was the most amazing performance I ever saw in my life (I also saw Natalie Dassey in this role live). Diana forever became my favorite opera singer, I still get goosebumps when I recall her incredible performance, her voice and acting.
Meravigliosa, unica Diana!
Perfection, as always. Thank you, dear Diana. 🤍
The only Lucia who can compete with Joan Sutherland - and this time with the original glass harmonica! Out of this world!
Beverly Sills is spectacularly better in this opera than Damrau will ever be. Sutherland had vocal power but mushed her way through many passages. No one had the heartbreaking articulation, speed and agility of Sills...plus the glorious beauty of her instrument.
HA! Silly person.
Manoli Stavrinakis Damrau has issues and many limitations.
Very nice, but I have problems with Damrau, all of which are on display here. Beverly Sills version is still the gold standard, Dame Joan
second.
Well I think music is on people’s taste.
You can say who is better in this repertory in technical way, but I hope you guys do not rank them.
All singers are best in their own way :)
Fantástico..obrigado.
lol, it's hard to not get into character while singing this one... Great fun, great performance!
wonderful!!!!
THANK YOU
Wundervoll.
I like her as the Queen of the night, there she is breathtaking!
Wunderbare Stimme.
sublime.
just amazing !!!
She has reinvented the definition of the word diva!
Grandiosa !!!
wow shes gotta be the best soprano for many years...im stunned by her
MARAVILLOSA EJECUCION
love this! ;)
glorious
Fantastic interpretation from Diana. Beautiful voice, as usual.
Fantastic ✌❤❤❤❤
So awesome. It's beautiful.
👏👏👏👏❤️
Vivat Romania 😉! from Estonia!
Beau Mont why?
It's part of the current way of approaching opera that everybody needs to show how hard they are acting. I can't help feel that this is a bit overboard for Lucia's delirium, Lucia is supposed to be mad but she imagining what a joy her wedding should have been. This is just a bit too laboured. Calleja is the star for gripping the drama in that long last scene after Lucia has finished going bonkers and died.
She sings like this in every single aria, even "Caro Nome" trollol. Leave opera if she really is so into Hollywood.
James she acts this way and how could you sing this aria staying stiff?
The vocal line must come first. Pedantic histrionics are useless and it's why only the greatest singing actors are celebrated as such.
Her voice and technic are un comprable. Perfect crescendo and amazing pianissimos.

Anyone knows the instrument with glass tubes and wine glasses?
yes
@Jacinta Acon It's a glass harp
As @Angelauska said, it's a glass harp which serves a specific function in this scene. Not only does it have an eerie sound but glass instruments were said to induce madness in both those playing and hearing them. (Some suggest this may be because glass used to be produced with lead which can poison and irrevocably damage your brain.) That's why it is heard when Lucia di Lammermoor has completely lost her mind after murdering her husband
Great singer- but- i agree- it's a little like … Offenbach operetta...
SUBLIME AUSSI CRISTALINE QUE LES VERRES §§§
brava
considerably good
Give it up--No one can compete with Dame Joan.
finalmente il glassofono
Lovely voice, but that tempo seems very slow to me.
Bill Carr Because she is heavy and has no agility.
+Bill Carr Actually, that part isn't supposed to be fast. The original glass harmonica is a rather sensitive instrument, and the virtuoso parts were not sung as fast as today in the time. This is why today most conductors choose a verrophone instead.
+Henrique Pinto I am sorry, no agility? Have you listened to her CD Arie di bravura? This is I think the greatest show of her agility. The arias there are practically all passages, coloraturas, staccato... How could a voice with no agility sing those? You need help, sir.
I didn't say it was supposed to be fast, just not as slow as she's singing. But it's a matter of taste, and I'm accustomed to hearing Sutherland so no one matches her. BTW, rabid Callas fans, don't bother......
@@krowapaulinka4351Listen to real coloraturas: Hoch, Peters, Oropesa and Damrau's faults will be abundantly clear
Nice - with misgivings - Sills is better and far more heartbreaking.
You're generous. I wouldn't even call it nice.
Di solito Lucia è più dolce e tenera, la pazzia è più incentrata sul matrimonio.
With a voice as ugly as that what is there to expect?
OMG! Not the best by a country mile!
Seems everyone commenting on this thread ie. her voice knows nothing about opera.
Lach hat leider nicht die Stimme dafür
¡OH NO!, DESTAZÓ A LUCÍA D:
Completely!
what remarkably bad influence Natalie Dessay has been to opera, every Lucia now has to "act" crazy, and this is only a concert I can only imagine the circus atmosphere of Damrau on stage. In opera it's the voice that tells the story and there should be very little distraction. And it's not even good acting, as a matter of fact it stinks. As for the voice, it's there but why all this scooping? I hear very little precision and lack of focus.
tklogan t What is she supposed to do then? Stay as a wooden doll? Of course she acts. Your opinion of opera is very old fashioned.
tklogan t Lol, How is it Dessay's fault that others can't act?
@Caracol Col Col lol,be careful to your grammar, both of them have beautiful voices but different type of voices
Why trying to make it so intense, all is in the music already! She doesn't sound mad, she sounds like the doll in the Tales of Hoffmann. Pity, right voice, wrong interpretation.
She's always intense in every single aria. It tells you it's more than just so-called "acting". It's her vocal-tensing issue.
Wrong voice period. As soon as she started singing I cringed
@@davidalbro2009 Same
@davidmarlboro or however uncall urself. So y the F listen and watch? Get a life.
Doesnt do anything for me. After Callas nothing does....
wackadoodle ...
A ridiculous singing and acting in a Concert Hall !!!!!! Even with STAGING the Mad-scene is never done this way!!!! Facial expression would have been enough ! There is NO italian tradition, No SENSE in what she is doing! I cannot find adequate words for this Mickymaus performance! A remarkable Coductor would have NEVER gone on stage with her....I know that times have changed..for the worse...and some audiences are applauding such singers like her and Netrebko and Co... because some really cannot identify anymore between GOOD and BAD.. All is PR...and Self-Show.. POOR DONIZETTI.......
Bibi Johns
Bravo for your comment!
Bibi Johns i like her voice but you are right!
+Bibi Johns I don't much like her voice or her version of this either.
honey, when you learn the aria you learn the mimic too, and of course this is the song of a mad person, you are seeing a neurotic crisis. Her voice is amazing, you can enjoy or not mimics but to say this is bad....you have no idea my dear
Who are you to tell the masses what's good or bad? Yes things can change, it's called Evolution.
Chi l'ha consigliata?Tutta calante.Terribile.
Moving her arms shoulders and head is detrimental. The vocal line must come first and if you can't feel the role in that alone all other histrionics are pedantic nonsense.
It's good. But Lucia is grieving and angry. This sounds a little like "oh look, Lucia's lost her marbles." Diana is a wonderful soprano, but she puts to much pressure on the emotion of the song. Tone it down...just a little.
tasteless like always. and top note screamed.
I take it that you are extremely jealous!
If you dont like a meal in a restaurant are you jealous? What a stupid suggestion...I guess surchoix has more idea of opera than you. Thats it.
@@vitabella6481 start chewing with real teeth, then you will taste good food instead of your denture paste! Best wishes to you and surchoix! 😊
Thank You! Damrau is a relentless screamer and so many people love it!
On second - and third hearing - it's actually a little boring.
I'm just not feeling it. Diana's one of the best sopranos, but not suited for the role of Lucia.
This fach was her whole career. 😂 If she can't sing this well she can't sing anything well.
(Surprise, surprise she can't.)
I am embarrassed for her .
Did you see the comment above about "maybe one of the best of all time". 😂 At best she was mediocre for her own time
sie mag eine gute Technik besitzen; ist aber(auch ohne sie anzusehen)so unfeminin,so "powerfrau, dass ich bei ihr keine zarte Gefühle endecke
Her technique is awful. Just listen to her voice. (And you can see the ridiculous constrictions in her face which destroyed the whole apparatus)
Какой кошмар
Bibi Johns : Thank you for your comments.
Why ? Why these very distracting concert histrionics ?
I saw a soprano do a "cartwheel" after singing an aria during a CONCERT.
Conductors are definitely guilty for letting this happen, but the audience that reinforces this embarrassment with not only applause but "Bravos".
( It's worse than "booing"! )
You can't understand? Its just because you are totally out of place.
@@MrGottlanze ~~
Oscar, may I use "Oscar" ?
You're right ! My opinion _is_ out of place ; out of time, space, era.
People are accepting the lesser of opera, like the lesser of two politicians ::
Good, youthful looks from the singers, but not necessarily great voices.
Heavily microphoned singers.
Extreme histrionics as a diversion from not-so-great vocalism. ( Beyonce :: great light-show ; costumes ; dancing ? or just hip-gyrations ; background voices & dancers -- all a distraction from a "mediocre", microphoned voice. )
Technology & techniques to dazzle, bewitch, bother & bewilder.
_It's all working !_
Ridiculous overacting (as always by Damrau) with no contribution to what’s the dramatic content of the scene is. She has a better voice than many contemporary sopranos, but a lack of melodic flow in the high notes. Here it isn’t actually Legato, but in general Legato certainly isn’t her strong side
