100 Years of Workplace Fashion | Glamour
in the 1940s, no hair was allowed to be out of the bandana, in case it got caught on hooks and ripped your scalp off, which actually happened. Also makeup wasn't allowed in the factories, in fears of it being flammable.
ofc haha
Charlotte Harrington I researched a lot about 1940s hair and i shake my head at all of the 1940s hairstyles cause they're so god-awfully wrong.
Rae Smith I love 1940s hair 😂
Ikr that annoyed me.....
This. I want to like these, it's such a cool idea, but I swear their research is an intern with Wikipedia.
even workplace fashion couldn't escape the 80's
Are you kidding? The eighties loved corporate/yuppie culture, workplace fashions would've thrived.
+M Fitzburger did you eat a burger today
Richelle Kurniawan the 80s was the best, delete this
Jakob Hopfer Don't get so salty about it, it's just a joke
Richelle Kurniawan lol true
2020, and workplace fashion changed drastically. Responding to global events, suits and shirts were quickly replaced by pyjamas, loungewear and onesies. The 'upper half' look is iconic of these pandemic years, with a smart shirt and hairstyle in front of the camera, and comfy pyjamas bottoms and slippers out of sight.
I hate how in these types of videos for 2016 there always has to be a phone and a selfie involved 😂
Hello Fellow amy
It represents reality quite accurately lol.
so true
It's to show the change in eras, today we use selfies as a way of showing style or anything really when it comes to social media. They're simply adding something of this time frame into the video. It doesn't state that everyone is doing it, it's using it as a way of showing how we have progressed.
yeah but phones are a huge part of 2016 and our generation today.
Guys, I need a little bit more time to read the stuff you put on screen. This is a video not a magazine, I don't want to have to pause every 5 seconds.
Same here. I kept pausing the video.
This was me: Rewind, pause, rewind, pause, thoughout the entire video! :/
totally agree with you.. grrrr..
Yessss!!! so frustrating
yep
Where are the power suits of the 80s with the huge shoulder pads?
Exactly! Those were a statement in the workplace
Ladolcevita-Not everyone in the 80's wore big or huge shoulder pads-Some did and some didn't
@@mikekaraoke Yes, but this video is supposed to sum up the main fashion influences by decade, and as we all know the comeback of shoulder pads as a sign of power was a big part of 1980s officewear.
Jesus slow down! there's not enough time to read the facts and appreciate the clothing at the same time
Kat Aguinaldo f'real tho, it's insane...
jam art you can pause the video 20 times but its annoying
Kat them pause
right? omg it was crazy
its not like one of those challenges womens fashion in under two minutes. Like we want to appreciate each one
I know it's 2016 and all, but jeans are not usually allowed in the workplace...
Can someone explain to me why? I've always been told to not wear Jeans to an interview, BUT why?
that's why it's "edgy"
I know many workplaces - also offices - where people are allowed to wear jeans. You just have to combine it in a suitable way.
Desiree May jeans wouldn't be acceptable at any type of interview imo. If/when you get hired at the company, they can tell you what their dress code policies are. Choosing what to wear when you're trying to get the job is TOTALLY different than dressing once you already have the job.
You always want to go to an interview and look nice, always take into account what the style of the place is, casual resturaunts can be casual dresses, NICE jeans and a very nice shirt But more formal places you should show up in a nice formal/semiformal outfit. Jeans are only acceptable when you find out what the dresscode is and if it allows or when youre go in as a customer.
I'm sorry but wearing jeans and a blazer is not "edgy"
haha ikr
Compared to the workplace wear of the other eras
hahahhahahahahha ikr
"Young girls 21-26 years old". Those would be women, lol.
Meghan Hirsh It would have been better to say young women 😂
It was common back then to refer to young unmarried women as "girls".
It's still that way with Asian airline companies, everything is about young and pretty. People who are afraid to fly don't want Hooter's in the sky, they want strong people who can save your life if anything goes wrong.
It's awesome how current the 70s outfit looks.
yeah i know right, you could get away with wearing it today, and it wouldn't so costume like.
you can make anything look like its not a costume if you style it right
the 80's model's shoulder pads were surprisingly understated.
I guess the facts they wrote were not supposed to be read..
Angelina Frank right?
constantly have to pause it to read it lol
vid was moving too fast, I have to pause it for me to read the sentences.. grrr....
Ikr
It is annoying..grrr
The 80's outfit should've been done better... they had really awesome and colorful power suits back in the day with skirts and cute heels
Ikr lol.
Classy Chic and her hair and makeup look like she is going to a nightclub. Should have looked more like Working Girl
Classy Chic Wearing pants in the office was a huge step in the 80s. I'm glad they put her in pants
The 80's had a lot of sleek, classy 40's inspired suits too that were really cool, and jewel tones were all the rage.
Classy Chic and shoulder pads. Cant forget the shoulder pads
the girl in the 40's is so pretty
Aviya Chemla you know I was a great way to
Yes...and I love her bandana style😍
Factory workers in the 40's wouldn't have had much of their hair out, or worn any jewelry as both were safety hazards.
Oh my god the 80's lady was killin it XD
My favorite is the 1930's model and fashion!!! Super cute
I love the 80s power suits and the workplace look, and every time I watch a show like Matlock, it always makes me want to be like Michelle Thomas.
2016 is the best fashion age.....u can sport any style u want....or make ur own...😘😘😘😘😘😘
totally agree
Mimi Singha That's what they say about EVERY fashion age. In a decade or two everyone will think our fashion was drab because you can pretty much sum everything up into skinny jeans the way most people figure neon colors was a casual thing in the 80's.
i would love to see 40's hairstyles come back though, if enough people did it, it would come back but everyone relies on celebrities for fashion now
Anja Pajari You should do it anyway, let ppl copy you. If you are confident you can do anything!!!
i do, i tell myself so i dont feel weird "if enough people do it it'll come back." and it helps
Totally sounds like The Sims 1 soundtrack at 1:00.
I thought the same :DDD
Sim nerds unite!
devilmaycry1337 it reminded me of The Simpsons, for some reason...
i like how style use to be by the decade, now its october 3rd 2016, october 4th 2016, october 5th 2016! it changes so dang much i dont know whats in or out anymore!
It's still by the decade, things have always gone in and out of trend every year, it's just the main staples that remained throughout the majority of the decade that get mentioned in these videos.
I love the styles in 1950s, 1980s and 2016 and just realized that it was the same model haha
I love the 1980s hairstyle they used
That was not a 1980s hairstyle. Go watch Designing Women
me too
the 1920-50s are just so cute ugh 💕
I can't read the text! It is going to fast
Sam EXACTLY!!
Even though I generally don't buy my own clothes, it's fascinating how women's fashion has evolved over the last hundred years!
Omg the first one was so cute and vintage she looked like a little doll!
Yo you gotta slow down the time the text is up. You put one up for 1:45-1:47 people can't read that fast
I could read it and I'm not even a native speaker.
Ya at least two seconds
I was able to read it
Totallybull I can
I can
Okay but the 80's😩😩😩😍😍 usually that era always looks crazy but not this time
Please start these in the 1910s!
Adelaide Beeman-White Not many woman worked.
Kat Hayashi most working class women did! Though I understand their way of dressing was less interesting to see
But yes they did, especially in the lower classes. They were the Gibson girls.
Tiffany Schmidt During WW1 a lot of women became volunteers in red cross, so they actually worked
Take me back to 1950s please!
noura, you're in the middle east you're still in the 1800's
+- meanwhile, your mentality is still stuck in the middle ages whoops
Unique Nebula I'm not mentality stuck in anything, I wouldn't mind the fashion in the 1950s, never said anything about the lifestyle.
+Noura R. I am so sorry if there was some kind of misunderstanding here so let me make myself clear. I wasn't replying to you but to the ignorant earlier in the comment section who attacted you and made some pretty false conclusions. I absolutely love 1950s fashion and the whole aesthetics of that era! Once again, sorry for the confusion!
Unique Nebula shutup i'm arab lol i'm just stating facts. i hate white people who cant stay in their lanes
i love 1980s look!!!!
I think it would be nice if in general people dressed up, more professional for jobs, like they did in the past.. Business casual, tends to be business sloppy now a days.
Tracy Edmonson depends, everyone's age or standard of style is different
most people want to feel beautiful and be well dressed and there's people that don't feel that way in certain clothing
Tracy Edmonson normally if you dress pretty or nice you don't look like a slob. You look presentable
+Tracy Edmonson
I agree with you. Even during the Great Depression, when no one had any money, people took pride in their appearance. Any picture of a random city crowd at that time will prove it.
They may not of had many clothes, but they made sure they were carefully laundered, mended, pressed and fit well. They also made sure their hair was styled and the rest of their look was put together.
People are total slobs now. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it has become cultural.
shutup old hag
In general the US has gotten really sloppy with how we dress. I live in a very white trashy town, and to give you an idea, people of walmart doesn't shock me because it's actually what my entire town looks like all the time. And speaking of walmart, a coworker of mine once asked a manager at our walmart why they don't carry the more sophisticated clothes like what they have online and the answer back was because no one in this town buys anything "nice".
I get weird looks and asked why I'm dressing up if I wear a blouse and nice shoes. Not even heels. And I know this isn't the only place in the country that is like that.
Why am I getting questioned when I'm trying to treat myself nice and dress to make myself happy? Why do I have to lower myself and make myself as ugly as possible to be "normal"?
This is incredibly unrealistic.
because you were born in the 20'...obvs
Sophie C They do have photos of regular people back then, though.
Mary-Jane Watson Exactly. It's likely that most people just went with was comfortable, affordable, and considered appropriate. The stylists definitely put aesthetics over realism/accuracy.
M Fitzburger
As women, comfort and affordability weren't an option. They had to be "lady-like" and appropriate, like you said.
Mary-Jane Watson Maybe it was about comfort in some decades more than others, but people have limited budgets, so affordability always has to be an option. You can't just spend money you don't have.
I love these outfits but did the Modern part have to include a selfie?
probably, since internet & social media careers are booming right now.
I know right, that part annoyed me.
unfortunately the boom is making most people even more self obsessive. lol
just a tip: the texts could last longer and there could be like a last loon at the outfit at the end cause i have no time to read AND look at the outfit
80's electromusic has always intimidated me 😂
***** Thanks pham
Hi Pham.
1:13 “slender around the hips” 😂
this is the most accurate time/fashion video I've even seen in my life literally...my whole life
+Anne point them out because the outfit must've been to cool I forgot to notice
does anyone notice that in a way the 70s returned in 2016. They both seem quite familiar
Crazy how far we've come.
I cant wear jeans to the office tough :( ,but the outfits were cool
I love the hair style the used for the model in the setting of the 1980’s.
If I were to be reborn that the hairstyle I going for.
Take care everyone and stay safe out there.
there was the time period in 2013 I think where girls wore suits like guys except for fitting for a womans figure that made them look pretty badass and it didn't look masculine on them either. also they had the skinny ties xD
❤️❤️1930s 1950s 1960s 1980s 1990s 2000s 2016❤️❤️
no shoulder pads in the 80s? ._.
Pachmintleaf-I know you posted this a very long time ago now-But not everyone wore shoulder pads
Shoulder Pads Only For dress
Such beautiful women but there's not too many corporate offices that would allow jeans as part of the daily uniform x
1960,1990 and 2000 and 2016 are my favouritr
how could you leave out victory rolls....... they were invented by the women in the working force as a way to look pretty and keep their face out of their face and machinery when working and it inspired so many glamours looks..
There is no way to check out the clothes and read everything. Slow down!
30's and the 50's styles were the best
70's My Fav 😍😍😍
80's and 2016 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
OMG FOR 2016, I HAVE THAT BAG
Bushra Aziz Where did you get it? haha its cute!
I’m surprised the power suit wasn’t featured in the 80s.
spot on with 2016
I can’t believe the 80s look is my favourite.
I love 50s look! The model is very beautiful!!! 😍
Slow down the captions a little I'm feeling like an idiot not reading fast enough 🙄
My favorite was 2000's.
I love the last outfit!
Loved the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s
I think they should point out that UK employers can still legally make female employees wear heels even if their job requires standing all day, or if the women doesn't want to wear heels.
I think we should start making men wear heels, maybe it'll make them shut their pie holes.
I think it would be more fair to just retract rules about women having to wear heels. Inflicting pain on men is just going to make them resent us... which doesn't end well for any of us.
Rachel Childs why do we have to be scared of their resentment? who cares if they resent us? We are women, and we have rights. Id file a complaint. and do an online protest. Who wants to wear heels 9 hrs a day.
Sara Johnstone ew
Anna Dawson boi.....
My favorites are the 20's, 50's, and 70's.
I thought the average women in the 20's didn't wear makeup
Angela Solomon some did, some didn't
Angela Solomon the 20's? Boi, that's when makeup became way more popular(although flappers were frown down upon, but still seen as somewhat innocent)
The '80s hair. Yes.
2000s my fav
Does anyone know the name of the music in the 2016 era?
The 2000s model is so beautiful!!
I read each of those comments on each area perfectly and interpreted in 2 seconds , this comment section reminds me of all the highschool kids who clearly been schooled the same amount of years and spoken English all their lives , but can't read the simplest of words fast nor perfectly without stuttering ,
1:53 That 80's power hair tho!
Gloves are awesome!
Could you PLEASE edit your videos so the text stays on screen longer? It really kills the whole point of the video if you can't even read the facts.
Bravo Glamour!!!! Spot ON!!!
finally found a good look in 1980s
Favorite magazine ❤️
I wish we still dressed like in the 40s
01:07 I hear Sims like music and I'm loving it. :)
ok I love clothes outfit I never know it can be part of the history I learn new thing . I respect them all. and this is true
50. 70, 80 and 90's is a vibe
Why are these videos starting in the twenties? ARE WE IN 2020?? I dont think so. XD i wanna see victorian stuff still XD
women hardly had jobs in Victorian times though hahahah
they did if they were poor.
doylescordy If they were poor back then, their working clothes were the clothes they wore all the time, because they couldn't afford anything that wasn't functional.
Kate Lala yes they did....
Hexx yes they could, you have a working dress and a nice dress for church and special occasions.
"todays workplace fashion combines classical, comfortable, and edgy pieces" Yeah, gotta admire those working ladies in their togas.
Everyone was so put together back then look at us now
the text is too quick for me to read!
My most favorites are 30s, 50s, 60s, 80s, 2000s, and 2016.
The blonde woman is definitely Madonna's long lost sister! :O
Love the 70s.
Do you guys really not care if I'm able to both read the descriptions and actually see the look? I read the descriptions as soon as they pop up, I speed read, barely finish it (if I do), and miss the look entirely.
slow the speed
Guys it's a video, you can pause it to read the text you know.
I really loved this video
Jeans? At the office? When? 😮
I love the 70s look. I'd wear that
The last fashion style is EXACTLY my counselor's style xD
I like very much this video.
Faves: 60s, 80s, 90s, 2016
I love 70s! and of course 2016
I reaaally like those trenchcoat overalls
They missed the best 1940s fact! Women would usually wear their husband's clothes when they worked in factories, and they would tailor them to fit properly. When the men came back, a lot of the men were mad that their clothes no longer fit!
MnMsandOreos I mean I would too....lol
I wish you guys would do one of 100 years of nurses fashion
