The way I understand it, this comes down to the way the two nations build their machine guns. German MGs tend to have incredibly high cyclic rates, meaning they put a LOT of bullets downrange in just a few seconds. Thus they developed the discipline of “burst firing” their MGs at individuals or groups to both conserve ammo and to prevent their guns from wearing out prematurely. American MGs tended to be slower-firing so they could operate for longer periods with one trigger pull. Thus the Americans tend to be more free with their burst times due to a slower cyclic rate and less overall stress on the gun. So this German soldier was trying to apply his discipline to an American gun which really didn’t require it. Or maybe we just like the dakka more and the Germans prefer efficiency. Idk. EDIT: I want to preemptively state that I made this comment before scrolling down and finding out at least 3 dozen other people already said the same thing.
In the German army we've been taught to do short bursts with short interruptions in-between when shooting a machine gun. Well, actually both, depending on what you are actually trying to achieve. Longs bursts are meant to suppress the enemies, not to actually hit them. But those should still be controlled bursts. Or you are trying to hit an aircraft (good luck with that one btw.). With short burst you can actually hit something. This was the preferred way, at least in my unit. I participated in a maneuver with a US Army unit. They were shooting with German weapons, and we with the American ones. I was also told to dump the whole drum in one burst with the M249... It is just spray and prey. You can't hit sh*t with that Minimi. I cannot imagine any situation I would actually do something like that in a real battle situation. But man, I have to admin, that was super fun, though! :D By the way, one of the US soldiers actually broke his collarbone while shooting the MG3. You shouldn't go into full auto unprepared with that beast :) However, long story short. I totally understand the German soldier receiving the permit to just go full burst mode with that .50 cal. That childish smile in his face is priceless! And again, doing that just for fun is absolutely nuts and I would really love to do the same. But in a real battle, most likely not :)
When you shoot weapons in the US military you need to expend all the ammo your commander ordered, if you return ammo that just means you won't be issued enough for the next training exercise.

Yes, that's the reason. To shoot more accurate, preserve ammunition and not to overheat the barrel. I was a Bundeswehrsoldier too and got trained to shoot in those short bursts.

We had mandatory conscription service in Germany a few years ago, so a lot of people, at least in Germany were Soldiers at some point, and nearly every German Soldier learns how to shoot the MG3. Not sure however about medics and musicians, but they are a minority.

I finally realized. The german soldiers are used to fire the mg3/mg42 with fast fire rate, that's why they used short burst. In this video, the machine gun isn't as fast so the german soldier only shoot 2-3 rounds and get confused until the us soldier tell him to stop bursting.

Overheating is not a problem of the MG3 - its a feature. When its hot enought you do no longer have to pull the trigger ^^

There are 2 modes on a machine gun.
1. Target fire, requiring short bursts.
2. Full auto, where most of the rounds pepper anything but the target.
Or the intended way, where the machine gunner uses long bursts to suppress the enemy so that the riflemen can place accurate shots.
