In many Chinese eyes from the PRC, the CCP has tied Chinese nationalism to the CCP. Any criticism of the CCP is criticism of the Chinese people. Actually talk to Chinese in China, it's the same with the BJP in India, VCP in Vietnam, Trump followers etc.
The only reason why those in the West conflate the terms "ethnicity" and "Nationality"; is because unlike many other Nation-States, they aren't directly linked. ....only people in highly diverse countries identify as hyphenated-Citizens. I personally get upset being called Chinese-American. I am an American and a veteran..... who happens to be Asian. my university in west germany has stopped working with the konfuzius institute five years ago because of suspected propaganda work, actually quite relieved that people here are doing the necessary work to question chinese influences.
I'm natural from a southern Europa country and I lived in East Germany (Schwerin) for several years (that was 5-6 years ago). I studied there in a technik school and there were also many chinese students. They didn't interact at all: they had their own separated building for the classes, and they were also isolated in a big block were they lived together. Because I'm a musician, I got to know one of them while I was given the opportunity to participate in a cultural music exchange. He was a very shy but well educated young and could play many traditional instruments, we enjoyed being with him and despite of him being shy, I'm sure he enjoyed us also. Then one day he said he couldn't come that often with us. Didn't give any clear info why. We never saw him again.... except once on the street, but he didn't want to talk..... it got me worried about him. Now that I'v seen your video it's like it all makes sense. Poor Chang

The thing is is the CCP notifies one of their college students to spy then the student has to do it or they can’t go back to China.. sad

I wrote my bachelor thesis on the speech patterns of the Dalai Lama in English linguistics. My supervisor was happy with my work. Then, the person who was grading me was the person responsible for the relations between the university and China.... She said I had to rewrite the whole thing and choose another subject. Thankfully, in Sweden you can request someone else to double check. I didn't have to rewrite much. but it was a big mess within the department.

Not true. I own stock in Tencent. It is listed on the OTC. It has to adhere to the SEC rules and regs. I day trade it about every other day as it rises and falls. I call it "My Chinese Revenge". IF you mean that the Chinese companies listed on the Chinese exchange then YES, you would be right. There are many Chinese companies listed on the NASDAQ and the OTC that you can buy and sell everyday with no problems.

The reg statement detailed the ownership structure, & explicitly showed that US shares owned a Cayman Islands entity that did not own Alibaba - I think it was controlled by Alibaba, but it did not own Alibaba shares.

Winston, I truly appreciate your take on “the bubble” regarding Chinese students studying abroad. When I was in high-school about 15 years ago (I’m in USA), I had the opportunity to witness first hand how even from abroad, the Chinese students were encouraged to almost isolate themselves from the US students, not interact. I was lucky enough (as the captain of my schools varsity tennis team) to get to know 5 or 6 of these Chinese students very well. These kids were excellent tennis players, but so critical of themselves and refused to receive any complements. No exaggeration, it took some of them almost 3 years of knowing me well, spending 3 hours per day for YEARS with them for them to break out of that “bubble” and begin truly interacting with me, laughing, joking, being friends. I still keep in touch with 2 and I consider them 2 of my best friends in life 15 years on! Love that in all your videos you make a point to mention that these peoples’ feelings most times do not align with their government! I feel as if many Americans often forget this.
I always wondered why the Chinese exchange students at my college were so insular. I couldn't see the point in them even going there. Meanwhile I was making friends and chatting with Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and even an East Timorese student. I worked at the study hall as an English tutor and not once did a Chinese student come in to proof-read a paper. Maybe they all just had exceptional grammar, punctuation, and comprehension. I never would have known either way.
Americans do forget Chinese peoples feelings normally don’t align. That is because a lot of Americans believe every single word they are told by THE AMERICAN GOV about China. i went to a private christian highschool that had a small group of Chinese students studying abroad and i witnessed personally what this video showed and what you said first hand. Their bubble was very tight, but i became friends with one girl who wasnt very well liked by her peers and she was so incredibly sweet. I feel like if we lived in a situation like their’s we’d come out the exact same way, its very eye opening to think about. Due to health conditions her family had her sent back to China before i could really get to know her well. I think about her constantly and hope she’s doing ok, but in reality i know she’s probably trying to survive just like everyone else is stuck in mainland china. I hope she finds a way out someday soon
Amazon must be mandated by law to show the country of origin for all products listed on its website. In India it is mandatory. Buyers can make a informed decision. 😎
Great more regulation to hamper innovation and startups while securing the economic motes of large companies that can afford it (not that I really have anything against Amazon). It might not seem like this single law would be a big deal, but it adds up overtime and you make more and more laws that don’t seem like big deals. Plus there will probably be loopholes anyways. If anything start your own e-commerce business to do it yourself.
@@donsullivan6199 Almost all of the products on Amazon do, indeed, show the origin of the product. I always look at the origin because that determines 1. whether I will get the product at all 2 Whether it is from China. 3. It gives me an indication of the postal cost.

The bit about the Confucius Institute really caught me off guard. My old uni has a pretty large Chinese student population, being a fairly high ranking one in England (University of Liverpool) and the study abroad programme being at a partner college in China. I've wondered why the Chinese students keep to themselves. This is scary and honestly disgusting that the CCP has influence within universities even outside of China - of course students should have cultural celebrations and stuff but being spied on in a foreign country is unacceptable. Thanks Winston. I don't agree with all of your takes, but your story of initial fascination with Chinese progress and the sadness at seeing it all go to shit with the CCP is a real one. There’s people that just can’t make friends even in US culture in college. imagine coming over when no one is like you, for some Chinese students the Confucius institutes is an escape. It’s kinda sad.

My old university closed it Confucius school back in March of this year. Citing the "National Defense Reauthorization Act" from the Department of Defense, that limited their ability to recive research grants. Saying this "made continuing the Confucius Institute unfeasible."

You don't do that in a free market. The US does not practise the free market the leaders claim they practise. China sent in a team of competent crisis managers to immediately liquidate the company's noncore and noncritical assets after due diligence and to pay off suppliers so that the projects could continue and the property buyers would be the least affected. Investors were also paid where possible. The regulators have gone one step further now, They have urged the Evergrande founder to tap on his personal wealth to pay the company's debts. This would be an unthought of suggestion in the West, where taxpayers' funds would be used to routinely to keep the company afloat, on the premise of the risk of a contagion that could cause hundreds of thousands to lose their jobs. China is taking a different route., one that will make the other owners of huge companies to think twice about the way they are managing their companies. Once again, the West have failed to understand China. And how her socialist principles have continued to value the welfare of her people instead of bowing to the pressure of the huge corporations that is so evident in the West.

I am an eBay seller in Australia. Sending an watch band within Australia costs me AU$2.20. The same item sent from China cost less than AU$0.80 to be sent from China to Australia. Impossible to compete other than the time to arrive. All to do with the International Postal Agreement where China claims to be a developing country so it gets cheaper postage.
And remember, the true shipping cost for all that chinese crap is paid by me and you. This has been a major nuisance where I live, where the national mail service had to increase their prices to offset the cost of shipping chinese packages around the country. Fortunately, this was addressed in media and so at least people were informed about the situation.

CHINA now is manufacturing AI products, robotics, precision tools, batteries n parts for electric vehicles, wind, solar panels n other stuffs that you don't see but use the final products daily. I'm a driving instructor and had the privilege of teaching these two to drive in Canada. out of nearly 400 novice drivers I assisted, these two were the only ones who showed me genuine gratitude. The young lady was the only one who who, with tears of joy, gave me a big hug! What did I do for them to deserve this, except simply building their confidence in their own ability to learn?
Winston is correct about the Chinese students being kept in a "bubble" concept! The sad thing is, a lot of these really nice students come to experience Western culture while they study abroad but never really get to "live" the experience because they're kept in these "bubbles," usually run by these social clubs etc. Hence, they rarely get to mix with people outside their Chinese groups. Some may want that for comfort and that's ok but for those who want to have their own experience, only some probably break away at some point but most end up stuck until they have to fly back home.
The fact that they come and experience but still goes back without being brainwashed the western way should tell you they are comfortable with Being Chinese.
If they feel there is an element of "Western brainwashing," then why ever go to any Western country for schooling or education? This comment contradicts itself. People who are prepared to travel abroad should always keep an open mind, no matter where that may be. ;)

I love my city of Prague, our mayor is very anti China and for the last 6 years we have small public exhibitions about tiananmen square massacre on many squares from 15.4 to 4.6 (or if you’re an American from 4/15 to 6/4) with messages how important it is to fight against communist tyranny in English,Czech,Russian,German and in both traditional and simplified Mandarin, since we have many chinese tourists for some reason.

I buy lots of tools and automotive stuff in Canada, and have started using Princess Auto instead of Canadian Tire. Princess Auto sources a lot of their stuff from Taiwan, whereas Canadian Tire is pretty much entirely China.

But I avoid it as possible. my worst case is using something from Taiwan otherwise local/original part from the manufacturer. It is not xenophobic it is a matter of saving my (and others) lifes. I have changed my purchasing habits during covid - I shop local, and always look for US made products. If I cant find a US product, I then question if I really need it. I also have cut out nearly all social media and woke anything with a dash of more self reliance and reasonable preps.

I no longer have a cell phone. I have never had an Amazon account. I haven't shopped at Walmart since they went from "Made in the USA" to "Falling Prices", in other words "Made in China". When I buy something on eBay that shows up from Amazon (never intentionally) I complain to eBay and they are now listening. Plus I will soon be selling my own Made in the USA guitars, I've invested around $25,000 to do so. Fender, Gibson, Ibanez and the others have all sold out to the communist. But the bigger problem is our Federal Reserve. They took us off the gold standard in 1971 and have printed money ever since. THIS IS WHY things are so expensive. The more dollars they print, the bigger supply, the less the value. In other words printing money weakens your buying power. Yes, but the mainstay of guitar manufacturing is indonesia and south korea, with "World musical Instrument Co." in south korea, that manufacture: B.C. Rich, Chapman, Dean, Gretsch, esp LTD, Line6, PRS SE, Schecter and more.., And CORT in south korea and indonesia similarily catering to many brands, both not in china. Fender did have some manufactured in China, but that was like 3 years ago. Cort and world musical instruments co. manufacture most, with reasonably good to very good quality. China never will.
you're 100% right, I would also like to add that the fiat money is not the only reason why our economy has fallen so much (its for sure a huge problem, but its not that alone). I was never pro Communist, even when it was "in" during the 1970es and 1980es. Controlling how people live, think and spend their money is ugly no matter where it takes place, and Communism is all about control. My host-country (a country in Scandinavia) doesn't allow its citizens identity protection, so I will not tell you my exact age, I'll just say that I'm in my 60es, and I appreciate that while negative tendencies seem to be on the rise around the world, it is good to find there are people who are willing to stand up and invest in trying to prevent damage and help make things better by sharing awareness and knowledge.

A few months ago I was thinking about this and decided to go through my things and see how many things I owned were made in China. I was stunned to find that it was hard to find something NOT made in China.
It's very difficult to find electronics that is not made in China. Especially computer parts. Best you can hope for is Taiwan. Taiwanese stuff is way better anyway, but the problem is all these Taiwanese companies like Asus, Acer, Gigabyte, MSI etc. manufacture most of their products in mainland China. Which is very weird, since China wants to occupy them, so they are basically funding their future occupation. Anyway, I was prepared to pay double, but even the high-end (which would be overkill for my purposes) stuff is still often made in China. Frustrating. What's worse, many online shops don't really show the country of origin of the product, so you often find out it's made in China when you receive it. I don't care about Chinese brands - I don't buy their stuff since COVID anymore. But Samsung or many Japanese or even European brands - they all make their stuff in freaking China! I even wrote an email to Noctua (Austrian company!) urging them to move manufacturing back to Taiwan. I think the more people do this the better. Maybe they will eventually get the message and move their factories to Vietnam or other Asian countries. Maybe even to their home countries...
My local grocery store had a new brand of canned fruit on the shelves. It was really cheap. I read the label, saw it was a product of China, and put it back. I bought a product from South Africa instead. Walmart sells a lot of canned goods sourced from China. Take a second to check the label! I need to chat with my investment manager and see where my money is going.
Yeah its pretty much impossible to avoid. Almost everything is madebin china these days. The best you can do, like winston said, is to just buy non chinese brands so most of the money goes to the brand. Its what ive always tried to do.
I only ever buy from western, Japanese, and Korean companies. However, buying from those companies that manufacture in Southeast Asia, or their home countries is definitely an added bonus.
@bin I don't think China can forbid companies from sending their wares to the US or other developed nations who manufacture in SEA. As more countries become wary of China, so too do they become less influential in the world. Why do you think there is a restructuring of the global supply chains? At the end of the day China can only bitch and gripe, they will never change and they should focus on themselves and their shortcomings instead of messing with other countries. Look at Australia as an example, China forbade the import of beef, coal, and barley. Now, they have to contend with rolling blackouts, and a food shortage. What did Australia do? They found other markets like Japan for instance. China is replaceable as a market especially after considering how costly it is to deal with them. It's simply no longer worth it.

I do try my best not to buy "Made In China" goods, but at times it's damn near impossible with some items. Especially when it comes to electronics. However; given the choice I always pick Canada first, USA second, then anything except China.

I try to find brands that are unaffiliated with China, and stick with them as much as possible. I don't trust Chinese companies at the best of times, and the way the CCP is acting these days I'm staying as far away as possible.
Taiwan makes some good computer hardware, but as far as China I stay away from their cheap trinkets they seem to mass produce and sell at the dollar store.

I never thought I would take pride in buying products made in Vietnam, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India or other Asian countries. Now I am happy when I see 'Made in' (any country but China). Last year I bought a very nice pair of Merrell hiking boots (made in Vietnam) that have comfortably taken me up and down three mountains and on other hikes. My experience with Chinese-made products has been very shay at best, and low rent at worst. Of course I would prefer things made in the USA, and will continue looking for them. But, especially since COVID-19 and watching the P.R.C.'s growing hostility, I strive to avoid the "Made in China" label at all costs. Thank you for your very informative video...
I have brought clothes and I found out they were made in Indonesia and a couple other countries that we’re not in China in that region and they were so nice and Chinese made products are so cheap and awful but they’re not cheap monetarily

You forgot to mention the seafood situation. STOP BUYING CHEAP IMPORTED SEAFOOD!!!! Support local, ethical sourced seafood! The Chinese fisheries are demolishing the environment all for cheap 20$ sushi plates. They will never stop until they get every last fish.
I would suggest buying seafood from community supported fisheries. They buy directly from the fisherfolk at a fair price. Prices similar to supermarkets, but you know what you are getting.
it's ironic because China still has to import a lot of seafood, including things like Cornish crabs from the UK! I remember Rick Stein tucked into a delicious crab on his trip to China and was surprised to find it was from home! Buy local UK seafood.

Over 20 years ago my favourite chinese restaurant closed. It was part of a chain which closed all of its restaurants at the same time. This happened because they were discovered to be a Chinese Government intelligence operation. Nowadays I suspect the governement would just let them continue.

Very informative ... two things ... Those Chinese institutes on campus are there because of some "deal" ... Universities are greedy and all they need to be told is that we will steer away rich kids from your school if we can't be allowed to function on campus. Pretty simple really. The other disturbing thing I heard from someone in India directly that deals with Chinese manufacturers is that some of them will now literally print whatever country you want to say as a MADE IN on the box / label. You want it to say Made in Thailand? Made in Vietnam? ... no problem ... its that how low some of them are sinking. It's a big country with a lot of mouths to feed and the scars are showing.
Way back in the late 80's when there was a bit of a pushback against Chinese made goods, I bought a toolkit that was in a box labeled "made in USA" . Opened it up and all the tools were manufactured in China, only the box was "made in USA"

If you can't find a non-Chinese product, buy used until you can. The CCP doesn't get a dime from you this way but you will have what you need, at least until it breaks anyway.

DO NOT 100% TRUST CULTIVATE!!! This app is a great idea, but has a lot of flaws still. I've been using their addon for a while, and it does not always work. Its a sort of algorithm its uses that gets confused when its a CCP made product but sold by an American seller (which is almost everything on Amazon). It also does not know how to catch the "assembled in" lie. For example, if a product is mostly made in the CCP, but they install some part or package it in the USA the label will say either "Made in China and the USA", or "Made in China Assembled in the USA". Cultivate does NOT catch that.
I always enjoy your videos. I lived in China from 1999 to 2011. I too have a Chinese wife and Chinese family in China. My wife and I live in British Columbia Canada. During my time in China I lived in several cities and travelled to others.
Realistically speaking, we aren't ever going to completely separate economically from China they are too damn big. But we need to reduce how much of our supply chain for various goods comes from there and start building ties with India and Europe and Canada and South America. We also need to reduce the number of Chinese students at our universities. At the University of Washington they made a deliberate choice to take foreign students who pay more than in state to pay for rising expenses. But if you buy a house (which the Chinese have done in cash( and reside for 9 months you aren't out of state you pay in state tuition. And we need to build economic ties with Africa. I just researched The Confuscious Institute in Washington state and unlike other states it's organized at the state level not the university or college level. Why it was done this way I'm not sure but at the time of its set up Gary Locke was our governor (first Chinese American governor in the US, later Ambassador to China) Maybe it gives us more control over the organization?

Yes we have the brains, we too have sent rovers to Mars and Moon.. a lot of top tech companies the world over are headed by Indians, but we don't have the money and until we have that money we will be a developing country. It is the sheer amount of population that India and China has and also the fact that we have been looted of trillions of dollars by the British puts us in this position.

I bought a 12,000 watt generator from Viet Nam this year. I bet it was just assembled there. Could have bought a Kohler. BUT $4,000 for the generator and transfer switch and another $3,000 for installation and permits. I just use 4 extension cords and roll it out of the garage. So far used it 3 time this year. But the olde lady fussing about the noise and cords on the floor is almost as bad. A very good reason to get a Kohler get for her convenience. Most of the convenient disposable items we go through are from China.

I avoided buying anything shipped from China mainly because of shipping and how long it takes, and often stuff get lost midway. Though, as for branding goes, even name brands have their stuff made in China, so it's hard to avoid China completely.
I was in China for eight years (3 yrs Thailand, 8 yrs China), and one would think it's become almost cliched and stereotypical to view the Chinese as unpleasant (whether that applies to the majority, minority, or either or because of the influence of the CCP, who knows). I very sincerely am one who looks at life with an open heart, unjudgmental and accepting attitude, but will say without a shred of doubt, and as a blanket statement (barring the hospitable, sincere, compassionate and educated one's) that the ingrained stereotype of the country that we've put into a little corner and become far too comfortable with, by far underestimates the egregious and harrowing state of the country. I don't want this to come across as excessively ''wordy'', but it truly is the only way I can describe my experience. Aside from the agonizing torment inflicted upon innocent animals, the government's ruthless imprisonment of it's citizens behind the ''great wall", the indoctrination branded into their psyche from kindergarten - quite literally a patriotic salute in allegiance to a ''superior country'' in all respects - manipulates them into accepting a distorted reality where suffering is hailed as life's grim pinnacle. This merciless ''life'' betrays the very essence of human dignity, plunging a nation into a nightmarish abyss of perpetual despair, regarded as the norm. It's absolutely heart-wrenching, to an almost visceral level.
In the U.S. it is often very difficult to figure out where products come from. Often the label will just read, "Distributed by" with a company address, but you have no idea where something was manufactured or produced or where the parts came from. I have even seen a product that was marked USA, but further down on the label it said, "Assembled in and with parts from China". I would like to see laws demanding transparency. I believe consumers have the right to know.
There was a Confucius Institute in my college, packed their bags and went off for good after the facility couldn't take it any longer 😂. Don't know if there is still a Confucius network been re-established again.

(How do I say this...) 'Handle' us... Cause I've heard stories about how my seniors would literally take advantage of the staff's gullibility and flunk class, skip assignments and tests and yet manage to get passed after which the staff got punished by the management as students didn't learn Chinese... Then in my batch when I took Japanese as foreign language I would literally hear my batch mates cussing and planning to teach a lesson to the Chinese staff as they were unreasonably mistreating the students in class.... It was in the end of my 6th or7th semester when I last saw the last Chinese "professor" Pack up his bag with a wide smile exiting the hostel, told me that he was so happy to go home but he's also sorry his stay in a Democratic country wasn't as pleasent as he'd hoped would be. {we were friendly cause I was literally the only person to speak friendly to him (he said that) and we only meet to fill up our water bottles (by coincidence) in the evening (that's literally the only situation I would ever see him) and I mistook him for a North Eastern Indian guy and made small chat, that's it} Bottom line:- I think the cultural differences is giving Indians a passive immunity to the CCP's global propaganda i.e Confucius institutes, cause we have seen a lot of political stunts from our own politicians and we really don't care about semantics. How many such Chinese institutions are active in India? In my opinion not many. The only tangible threat these Institutions can pose is by creating an underground network of Goons and money laundering Loan sharks. Have seen a lot of digital loan sharks somehow converting Chinese Yuan to Indian National Rupees (INR) and trapping low income families into a vicious debt spiral. Buying local journalists to spy on Indian Army Cantonment camps and Ammunition depots. The real threat is not subversion or control, it's leaking compromising National secrets!

Tip: Don't use "Made in USA" as a guide. It's perfectly legal for a company to buy and "almost finished" product from China or anywhere, ship it to the USA, and "complete" the product here and still call it "Made in USA".
I literally just bought one of those power banks last week. Wish I would've waited til' I saw this video because I too am interested in buying domestically but the extent to which I scrutinize the product has only amounted to where the product is shipped from, not where it was created. I'm always careful where the item Im buying is made but what about the US companies that moved their manufacturing to China? They need to look for alternative manufacturing locations too. They have just as much if not more responsibility as the consumer.
They will only move away from China if consumers demand it. Otherwise there's no incentive for them. Look how easily Western corporations adopt positions on social issues. Why? Well because they will be cancelled if they don't. People need to vocally oppose buying from companies that employ slave labor or operate in authoritarian regimes. If enough people can do this, and show that they care about where there goods are produced, then even if they do not completely boycott CCP products it will still drive a lot of change.
Greed, cheaper labour means bigger profits and bigger bonuses. The people that make these decisions are the bosses and they're the ones that get those bonuses. The chinese offer access to a market of 1.2 bn customers but at a price, they have to toe the party line, have a chinese company as a partner and allow access to their intellectual property.

Being critical of the CCP does not equate to hating Chinese people.
In many Chinese eyes from the PRC, the CCP has tied Chinese nationalism to the CCP. Any criticism of the CCP is criticism of the Chinese people. Actually talk to Chinese in China, it's the same with the BJP in India, VCP in Vietnam, Trump followers etc.
The only reason why those in the West conflate the terms "ethnicity" and "Nationality"; is because unlike many other Nation-States, they aren't directly linked.
....only people in highly diverse countries identify as hyphenated-Citizens.
I personally get upset being called Chinese-American. I am an American and a veteran..... who happens to be Asian.

my university in west germany has stopped working with the konfuzius institute five years ago because of suspected propaganda work, actually quite relieved that people here are doing the necessary work to question chinese influences.
I'm natural from a southern Europa country and I lived in East Germany (Schwerin) for several years (that was 5-6 years ago). I studied there in a technik school and there were also many chinese students. They didn't interact at all: they had their own separated building for the classes, and they were also isolated in a big block were they lived together.
Because I'm a musician, I got to know one of them while I was given the opportunity to participate in a cultural music exchange. He was a very shy but well educated young and could play many traditional instruments, we enjoyed being with him and despite of him being shy, I'm sure he enjoyed us also.
Then one day he said he couldn't come that often with us. Didn't give any clear info why. We never saw him again.... except once on the street, but he didn't want to talk..... it got me worried about him. Now that I'v seen your video it's like it all makes sense.

I wrote my bachelor thesis on the speech patterns of the Dalai Lama in English linguistics. My supervisor was happy with my work. Then, the person who was grading me was the person responsible for the relations between the university and China.... She said I had to rewrite the whole thing and choose another subject. Winston, I truly appreciate your take on “the bubble” regarding Chinese students studying abroad. When I was in high-school about 15 years ago (I’m in USA), I had the opportunity to witness first hand how even from abroad, the Chinese students were encouraged to almost isolate themselves from the US students, not interact. I was lucky enough (as the captain of my schools varsity tennis team) to get to know 5 or 6 of these Chinese students very well. These kids were excellent tennis players, but so critical of themselves and refused to receive any complements. No exaggeration, it took some of them almost 3 years of knowing me well, spending 3 hours per day for YEARS with them for them to break out of that “bubble” and begin truly interacting with me, laughing, joking, being friends. I still keep in touch with 2 and I consider them 2 of my best friends in life 15 years on! Love that in all your videos you make a point to mention that these peoples’ feelings most times do not align with their government! I feel as if many Americans often forget this.
I always wondered why the Chinese exchange students at my college were so insular. I couldn't see the point in them even going there. Meanwhile I was making friends and chatting with Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and even an East Timorese student. I worked at the study hall as an English tutor and not once did a Chinese student come in to proof-read a paper. Maybe they all just had exceptional grammar, punctuation, and comprehension. I never would have known either way.
Americans do forget Chinese peoples feelings normally don’t align. That is because a lot of Americans believe every single word they are told by THE AMERICAN GOV about China. The amount of people that legitimately thought Covid didnt come from China was insane. Literally China saying it DIDNT come from Wuhan made me think it DID come from Wuhan😂😂
i went to a private christian highschool that had a small group of Chinese students studying abroad and i witnessed personally what this video showed and what you said first hand. Their bubble was very tight, but i became friends with one girl who wasnt very well liked by her peers and she was so incredibly sweet. I feel like if we lived in a situation like their’s we’d come out the exact same way, its very eye opening to think about.
Due to health conditions her family had her sent back to China before i could really get to know her well. I think about her constantly and hope she’s doing ok, but in reality i know she’s probably trying to survive just like everyone else is stuck in mainland china. I hope she finds a way out someday soon

The bit about the Confucius Institute really caught me off guard.
My old uni has a pretty large Chinese student population, being a fairly high ranking one in England (University of Liverpool) and the study abroad programme being at a partner college in China.
I've wondered why the Chinese students keep to themselves. This is scary and honestly disgusting that the CCP has influence within universities even outside of China - of course students should have cultural celebrations and stuff but being spied on in a foreign country is unacceptable.

My old university closed it Confucius school back in March of this year. Citing the "National Defense Reauthorization Act" from the Department of Defense, that limited their ability to recive research grants. Saying this "made continuing the Confucius Institute unfeasible."

China sent in a team of competent crisis managers to immediately liquidate the company's noncore and noncritical assets after due diligence and to pay off suppliers so that the projects could continue and the property buyers would be the least affected. Investors were also paid where possible.
The regulators have gone one step further now, They have urged the Evergrande founder to tap on his personal wealth to pay the company's debts. This would be an unthought of suggestion in the West, where taxpayers' funds would be used to routinely to keep the company afloat, on the premise of the risk of a contagion that could cause hundreds of thousands to lose their jobs. China is taking a different route., one that will make the other owners of huge companies to think twice about the way they are managing their companies.
Once again, the West have failed to understand China. And how her socialist principles have continued to value the welfare of her people instead of bowing to the pressure of the huge corporations that is so evident in the West.
The only solution is to get a giant fishing flotilla, paint every ship like Whinnie the Pooh, and sail triumphantly into the South China Sea

My experience with one young couple who were studying in a local university.
I'm a driving instructor and had the privilege of teaching these two to drive in Canada.
out of nearly 400 novice drivers I assisted, these two were the only ones who showed me genuine gratitude. The young lady was the only one who who, with tears of joy, gave me a big hug!
What did I do for them to deserve this, except simply building their confidence in their own ability to learn?
Winston is correct about the Chinese students being kept in a "bubble" concept! The sad thing is, a lot of these really nice students come to experience Western culture while they study abroad but never really get to "live" the experience because they're kept in these "bubbles," usually run by these social clubs etc. Hence, they rarely get to mix with people outside their Chinese groups. Some may want that for comfort and that's ok but for those who want to have their own experience, only some probably break away at some point but most end up stuck until they have to fly back home.

I love my city of Prague, our mayor is very anti China and for the last 6 years we have small public exhibitions about tiananmen square massacre on many squares from 15.4 to 4.6 (or if you’re an American from 4/15 to 6/4) with messages how important it is to fight against communist tyranny in English,Czech,Russian,German and in both traditional and simplified Mandarin, since we have many chinese tourists for some reason.

But I avoid it as possible. my worst case is using something from Taiwan otherwise local/original part from the manufacturer. It is not xenophobic it is a matter of saving my (and others) lifes. I have changed my purchasing habits during covid - I shop local, and always look for US made products. If I cant find a US product, I then question if I really need it. I also have cut out nearly all social media and woke anything with a dash of more self reliance and reasonable preps.

I no longer have a cell phone. I have never had an Amazon account. I haven't shopped at Walmart since they went from "Made in the USA" to "Falling Prices", in other words "Made in China". When I buy something on eBay that shows up from Amazon (never intentionally) I complain to eBay and they are now listening. Plus I will soon be selling my own Made in the USA guitars, I've invested around $25,000 to do so. Fender, Gibson, Ibanez and the others have all sold out to the communist. But the bigger problem is our Federal Reserve. They took us off the gold standard in 1971 and have printed money ever since. THIS IS WHY things are so expensive. The more dollars they print, the bigger supply, the less the value. In other words printing money weakens your buying power. Yes, but the mainstay of guitar manufacturing is indonesia and south korea, with "World musical Instrument Co." in south korea, that manufacture: B.C. Rich, Chapman, Dean, Gretsch, esp LTD, Line6, PRS SE, Schecter and more.., And CORT in south korea and indonesia similarily catering to many brands, both not in china. Fender did have some manufactured in China, but that was like 3 years ago. Cort and world musical instruments co. manufacture most, with reasonably good to very good quality. China never will.

A few months ago I was thinking about this and decided to go through my things and see how many things I owned were made in China. I was stunned to find that it was hard to find something NOT made in China.
And even the things not made in China contain materials manufactured in China.
It's very difficult to find electronics that is not made in China. Especially computer parts. Best you can hope for is Taiwan. Taiwanese stuff is way better anyway, but the problem is all these Taiwanese companies like Asus, Acer, Gigabyte, MSI etc. manufacture most of their products in mainland China. Which is very weird, since China wants to occupy them, so they are basically funding their future occupation. Anyway, I was prepared to pay double, but even the high-end (which would be overkill for my purposes) stuff is still often made in China. Frustrating. What's worse, many online shops don't really show the country of origin of the product, so you often find out it's made in China when you receive it.
I don't care about Chinese brands - I don't buy their stuff since COVID anymore. But Samsung or many Japanese or even European brands - they all make their stuff in freaking China! I even wrote an email to Noctua (Austrian company!) urging them to move manufacturing back to Taiwan. I think the more people do this the better. Maybe they will eventually get the message and move their factories to Vietnam or other Asian countries. Maybe even to their home countries...
My local grocery store had a new brand of canned fruit on the shelves. It was really cheap. I read the label, saw it was a product of China, and put it back. I bought a product from South Africa instead. Walmart sells a lot of canned goods sourced from China. Take a second to check the label! I need to chat with my investment manager and see where my money is going.

As more countries become wary of China, so too do they become less influential in the world. Why do you think there is a restructuring of the global supply chains? At the end of the day China can only bitch and gripe, they will never change and they should focus on themselves and their shortcomings instead of messing with other countries. Look at Australia as an example, China forbade the import of beef, coal, and barley. Now, they have to contend with rolling blackouts, and a food shortage. What did Australia do? They found other markets like Japan for instance. China is replaceable as a market especially after considering how costly it is to deal with them. It's simply no longer worth it.

I never thought I would take pride in buying products made in Vietnam, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India or other Asian countries. Now I am happy when I see 'Made in' (any country but China). Last year I bought a very nice pair of Merrell hiking boots (made in Vietnam) that have comfortably taken me up and down three mountains and on other hikes. My experience with Chinese-made products has been very shay at best, and low rent at worst. Of course I would prefer things made in the USA, and will continue looking for them. But, especially since COVID-19 and watching the P.R.C.'s growing hostility, I strive to avoid the "Made in China" label at all costs.

I would suggest buying seafood from community supported fisheries. They buy directly from the fisherfolk at a fair price. Prices similar to supermarkets, but you know what you are getting.

Over 20 years ago my favourite chinese restaurant closed. It was part of a chain which closed all of its restaurants at the same time. This happened because they were discovered to be a Chinese Government intelligence operation. Nowadays I suspect the governement would just let them continue.

Very informative ... two things ... Those Chinese institutes on campus are there because of some "deal" ... Universities are greedy and all they need to be told is that we will steer away rich kids from your school if we can't be allowed to function on campus. Pretty simple really.
The other disturbing thing I heard from someone in India directly that deals with Chinese manufacturers is that some of them will now literally print whatever country you want to say as a MADE IN on the box / label. You want it to say Made in Thailand? Made in Vietnam? ... no problem ... its that how low some of them are sinking. It's a big country with a lot of mouths to feed and the scars are showing.
Way back in the late 80's when there was a bit of a pushback against Chinese made goods, I bought a toolkit that was in a box labeled "made in USA" . Opened it up and all the tools were manufactured in China, only the box was "made in USA"

On a side-note, years ago when I started teaching, I applied to a Confucious Institute in Canada. I had no idea at the time; thank God I took another job instead.
DO NOT 100% TRUST CULTIVATE!!! This app is a great idea, but has a lot of flaws still. I've been using their addon for a while, and it does not always work. Its a sort of algorithm its uses that gets confused when its a CCP made product but sold by an American seller (which is almost everything on Amazon). It also does not know how to catch the "assembled in" lie. For example, if a product is mostly made in the CCP, but they install some part or package it in the USA the label will say either "Made in China and the USA", or "Made in China Assembled in the USA". I always enjoy your videos. I lived in China from 1999 to 2011. I too have a Chinese wife and Chinese family in China. My wife and I live in British Columbia Canada. During my time in China
I lived in several cities and travelled to others.
Realistically speaking, we aren't ever going to completely separate economically from China they are too damn big. But we need to reduce how much of our supply chain for various goods comes from there and start building ties with India and Europe and Canada and South America. We also need to reduce the number of Chinese students at our universities. At the University of Washington they made a deliberate choice to take foreign students who pay more than in state to pay for rising expenses. But if you buy a house (which the Chinese have done in cash( and reside for 9 months you aren't out of state you pay in state tuition. And we need to build economic ties with Africa.
I just researched The Confuscious Institute in Washington state and unlike other states it's organized at the state level not the university or college level. Why it was done this way I'm not sure but at the time of its set up Gary Locke was our governor (first Chinese American governor in the US, later Ambassador to China) Maybe it gives us more control over the organization?

@@andrewchristie2970 As an Indian, I can tell you India is a developing country too. Yes we have the brains, we too have sent rovers to Mars and Moon.. a lot of top tech companies the world over are headed by Indians, but we don't have the money and until we have that money we will be a developing country. It is the sheer amount of population that India and China has and also the fact that we have been looted of trillions of dollars by the British puts us in this position.
Isolationism is the answer, the US needs to eliminate its dependence on other countries.

@@zeze3305 It has not been easy but I have managed to find what I need from countries like Taiwan, Japan, Brazil, India and Ukraine. The products might cost a little more sometimes but it is worth it if you ask me.
I bought a 12,000 watt generator from Viet Nam this year. I bet it was just assembled there.
Could have bought a Kohler. BUT $4,000 for the generator and transfer switch and another $3,000 for installation and permits.
I just use 4 extension cords and roll it out of the garage. So far used it 3 time this year.
But the olde lady fussing about the noise and cords on the floor is almost as bad.
A very good reason to get a Kohler get for her convenience.
Most of the convenient disposable items we go through are from China.

I avoided buying anything shipped from China mainly because of shipping and how long it takes, and often stuff get lost midway.
Though, as for branding goes, even name brands have their stuff made in China, so it's hard to avoid China completely.

I was in China for eight years (3 yrs Thailand, 8 yrs China), and one would think it's become almost cliched and stereotypical to view the Chinese as unpleasant (whether that applies to the majority, minority, or either or because of the influence of the CCP, who knows).
I very sincerely am one who looks at life with an open heart, unjudgmental and accepting attitude, but will say without a shred of doubt, and as a blanket statement (barring the hospitable, sincere, compassionate and educated one's) that the ingrained stereotype of the country that we've put into a little corner and become far too comfortable with, by far underestimates the egregious and harrowing state of the country. I don't want this to come across as excessively ''wordy'', but it truly is the only way I can describe my experience.
Aside from the agonizing torment inflicted upon innocent animals, the government's ruthless imprisonment of it's citizens behind the ''great wall", the indoctrination branded into their psyche from kindergarten - quite literally a patriotic salute in allegiance to a ''superior country'' in all respects - manipulates them into accepting a distorted reality where suffering is hailed as life's grim pinnacle. This merciless ''life'' betrays the very essence of human dignity, plunging a nation into a nightmarish abyss of perpetual despair, regarded as the norm. It's absolutely heart-wrenching, to an almost visceral level.

In the U.S. it is often very difficult to figure out where products come from. Often the label will just read, "Distributed by" with a company address, but you have no idea where something was manufactured or produced or where the parts came from. I have even seen a product that was marked USA, but further down on the label it said, "Assembled in and with parts from China". I would like to see laws demanding transparency. I believe consumers have the right to know.
There was a Confucius Institute in my college, packed their bags and went off for good after the facility couldn't take it any longer 😂. Don't know if there is still a Confucius network been re-established again.

@@felixandersen3815 naah! my college's Chancellor is apolitical, they don't get involved in any such politics. Just that the Chinese staff weren't English educated enough to.... (How do I say this...) 'Handle' us... Cause I've heard stories about how my seniors would literally take advantage of the staff's gullibility and flunk class, skip assignments and tests and yet manage to get passed after which the staff got punished by the management as students didn't learn Chinese...
Then in my batch when I took Japanese as foreign language I would literally hear my batch mates cussing and planning to teach a lesson to the Chinese staff as they were unreasonably mistreating the students in class....
It was in the end of my 6th or7th semester when I last saw the last Chinese "professor" Pack up his bag with a wide smile exiting the hostel, told me that he was so happy to go home but he's also sorry his stay in a Democratic country wasn't as pleasent as he'd hoped would be.
{we were friendly cause I was literally the only person to speak friendly to him (he said that) and we only meet to fill up our water bottles (by coincidence) in the evening (that's literally the only situation I would ever see him) and I mistook him for a North Eastern Indian guy and made small chat, that's it}
Bottom line:- I think the cultural differences is giving Indians a passive immunity to the CCP's global propaganda i.e Confucius institutes, cause we have seen a lot of political stunts from our own politicians and we really don't care about semantics.
How many such Chinese institutions are active in India? In my opinion not many.
The only tangible threat these Institutions can pose is by creating an underground network of Goons and money laundering Loan sharks. Have seen a lot of digital loan sharks somehow converting Chinese Yuan to Indian National Rupees (INR) and trapping low income families into a vicious debt spiral. Buying local journalists to spy on Indian Army Cantonment camps and Ammunition depots.
The real threat is not subversion or control, it's leaking compromising National secrets!

Tip: Don't use "Made in USA" as a guide. It's perfectly legal for a company to buy and "almost finished" product from China or anywhere, ship it to the USA, and "complete" the product here and still call it "Made in USA".

I literally just bought one of those power banks last week. Wish I would've waited til' I saw this video because I too am interested in buying domestically but the extent to which I scrutinize the product has only amounted to where the product is shipped from, not where it was created. I'm always careful where the item Im buying is made but what about the US companies that moved their manufacturing to China? They need to look for alternative manufacturing locations too. They have just as much if not more responsibility as the consumer.
They will only move away from China if consumers demand it. Otherwise there's no incentive for them. Look how easily Western corporations adopt positions on social issues. Why? Well because they will be cancelled if they don't. People need to vocally oppose buying from companies that employ slave labor or operate in authoritarian regimes.
If enough people can do this, and show that they care about where there goods are produced, then even if they do not completely boycott CCP products it will still drive a lot of change.
They can very easily move manufacturing to neighbouring democracies like India...

Greed, cheaper labour means bigger profits and bigger bonuses. The people that make these decisions are the bosses and they're the ones that get those bonuses. The chinese offer access to a market of 1.2 bn customers but at a price, they have to toe the party line, have a chinese company as a partner and allow access to their intellectual property.
