If searching up Chinese history has taught me one thing, it's that closing off from the rest of the world and saying that you're the best is a really bad idea.
It only works in the pre-internet era. Not now when everyone has the access of the internet. A North Korea style of internet ban in China is not possible. Xi has Microsoft and bill gates to blame.
It’s a terrible idea from the point of view of ordinary people. From the emperor’s point of view, absolute isolation is a great idea. In fact, the Qing dynasty fell only because of foreign influences: Yuan ShiKai, a warlord with German trained army; Sun Yat Sen, a foreign funded revolutionist, a revolution, that demands democracy and equality, those foreign ideas, etc. According to the ruling class in China, it’s the foreign influences that brought the dynasty down. Remember, the emperor can’t care less about the living conditions of his people, he doesn’t care if famines were to claim millions of lives. Nor does he care about wars against foreign countries which he may end up paying some compensations and lose some pieces land. It might be unpleasant, but he DOES NOT care. All he cares about is his throne. As long as he’s on the throne, he doesn’t care about anything else. So if absolute isolation means millions of death from starvation and stopping his people from those foreign ideas so that he can still be on the throne, why not? Look at North Korea, people starve to death all the time, Kim is still in power. No big deal. Let’s just close off from the world.
Unfortunately when people feel under attack or in trouble, they start retreating into their core / conservative identity. For China, that seems to be Mao's time instead of Deng Xiaoping's.
Great video. I'm one of these foreigners who started teaching first, then started my own "school" in shanghai which I continue to run since returning to Australia after COVID. We teach adults mostly so things have been OK for us, but we're anticipating trouble over the coming months. Scary times. Thanks for your hard work and continued effort to spread the word about what's really going on in China! We all appreciate it.

Taiwan, taiwan, taiwan! That's where the real Chinese culture still is. Yes, it doesn't have the diverse geography, but it still has the soul of the people and the culture. As a Chinese person, I say to any foreigners who want to learn Chinese language and culture, Taiwan welcomes you and will show you the best of what Chinese civilization and culture can create.
Recently I talked to some Taiwanese they weren't at all friendly. For some reason they deny being Chinese even though 95% of Taiwan is Han Chinese, the other 5% are natives and other groups. If Taiwan is the real China, then how come some Taiwanese pretend not to be Chinese? No, those in question with whom I spoke with weren't the native Taiwanese. It's not like you can just make up new Chinese and be that. The roots are Han, it is what it is.
@@neroarchangel What you're confusing is ethnicity Chinese and nationality Chinese. Even though those two are both called "Chinese" in english, they are different in Mandarin. 中國人 Is nationality Chinese and 華人 is ethnicity Chinese. You can say that “I'm a Chinese Malaysian" or "I'm a Chinese Singaporean" or even "I'm a Chinese Taiwanese", all meaning "My ancestors are from China, but my nationality is NOT China."
@@neroarchangel and if you insist that people ARE who their ancestors WERE, then judging by that logic, Americans would be called British, and Chinese people would be called Mongolians, and every person on earth would be called Africans
This is why I love channels like Winston’s, Matt’s, China Uncensored, China Observer, etc. because without them it would be literally impossible for us to have this kind of thorough insights on China and her Government. Thank you for your hard work Winston!
@Johndoe Manhole why? Their reports are pretty spot on, their interviews with people and specialists of all kinds of area and alignment are actually pretty great, and their insights on the inner workings of the CCP and its infighting are very precise as well. The only thing that matters to me is if somebody does a good job and reports facts correctly and with precision, and China Uncensored ticks that box like everyone else I named. I will evaluate them only on their WORK, and not on their “ideological purity”, dismissing them just because “they are partially connected to Falun Gong”.
I moved to China (Hangzhou) in 2014 and lived there until November 2019. I started watching your videos about 6 months before I moved there, after I had already accepted a job at a training center (a Taiwanese-owned small franchise, similar to EF in operation). Your videos on Chinese supermarkets, street food, and more were honestly the single most helpful tool I had in getting ready for such a big move. Your development of a deep love and appreciation for china, then more complicated feelings towards it, then a frustration towards it, and finally heartbreak and anger toward it, neatly mirrors my own experiences. After 2 years I moved up to a prestigious local primary school. That major upgrade in status, money, and scheduling allowed me to finally reap in those extra tutoring and private small class earnings you talk about in this video, and that better lifestyle and serious savings made me decide to stay for an extra 3 years or so. In the end, though, I saw the writing on the wall. There were more cameras on the streets every day. The air quality was actually improving- as was my ability to get around with translation apps/English- but the invisible walls of society were closing in. Police knocked on my door about once a month to 'check' my permit. My school was no longer allowed to celebrate Christmas. I got in trouble with my principal because I showed an animaniac cartoon from the early 90's that I didn't realize mentioned Taiwan and Tibet at 'countries' until after I had shown it. The 'rules' about how often you needed to go visit police stations (after coming back from a trip abroad, when you move, every few months, etc) were unclear and haphazardly enforced, but increasingly threatening. Getting money out of the country became harder and harder.Things were getting uptight, and it was time to move on. I was hoping to go somewhere else and continue to teach (now as a licensed American teacher), but then covid hit and I got stuck back home in the states, teaching at a title 1 school in a pandemic. Things aren't great, but I am not worried about losing everything b/c of visa restrictions or authoritarian policies, at least. Thanks for what you keep doing. I loved my time in China. Moving there was the best decision I ever made, so it's hard for most people to understand the conflict I feel when I criticize it. But i know you do. Let me know if you want some inside sources from Hangzhou. I still have a lot of connections. -James

So glad I left China this year. I was there since 2005, and spent the last 2 years basically heartbroken that the China I came to know and love no longer existed. I'm so much happier back home. I lived in China from 2001-2007. I occasionally go back, went to Zhoushan and Shanghai in 2019 and was SHOCKED at what happened to China. Some people no longer accepting cash, taxis rarely stop for you if you are not using an APP, went to Disneyland and couldn't get FastPass without smartphone, used my in-laws smartphone for FastPass, that lasted about 2 hours, park security busted me for using someone else's smartphone (they even had a pic of my in-law who legally owned the phone). Eff that. That place is dead to me. Oh, and the Xi JinPing posters everyhwere and I could feel the xenophobia creeping in....
Was there for 18 years and had a good time up until the Olympics, I feel that changed everything, at least in BJ. Stayed until 2014 and left. No regrets going there, no regrets coming home. When problems stated to appear with native language teachers in China the Taipei Times editorial suggested that foreign language teachers would get a far better deal in Taiwan an d basically invited foreign teachers to consider Taiwan. Also Taiwan has set a target to work towards English becoming an official language rather like in Hong Kong. Some of the young people are absolutely brilliant. I would be struggling with Chinese and some lovely young people would stop to help and were so good with English I felt ashamed.
Yes indeed the CCP would do well attend to their back yard first before harassing Taiwan as they don’t come close to the standard and quality of life that Taiwan has achieved. When I first went to Taiwan I was exceptionally well treated by one receptionist of a hotel where we stayed. She waited behind long after her shift had finished to say goodbye . I went to the Taiwan Diplomatic Office when I returned home and asked for help to have her recognised and commended for outstanding service. Imagine my delight when the Acing Representative offered to sent an official letter on my behalf to the Hotel’s CEO. Little did I realise that this would eventually open the door for us to return to Taiwan for a wonderful year.
Taiwan indeed is a wonderful place but I doubt English would become a lingua franca any time soon. Outside of Taipei basically no one spoke it which wasn't too bad because I was able to practice Madarin 🙂
Cost of living there is way too high for it to be lucrative, you would save way more money teaching in Vietnam for example since Taiwan doesn't pay foreign teachers much more than Vietnam, and in some cases basically the same amount.

The new regulations affect both Chinese and foreign tutors .It is not targeting foreigners, but targeting the system of overwhelming school students with extra work and homework in for-profit private tutoring sector. The international legitimate schools are not affected all.

If searching up Chinese history has taught me one thing, it's that closing off from the rest of the world and saying that you're the best is a really bad idea.
Absolute Isolationism is as dumb as the opposing extreame. All things in moderation.
@carl hartford What is this "historical mean" of which you speak. I couldn't find any info on it.
It's what the USA did before WW2; didn't really turn out bad for it.
As Chinese it’s rather depressing to see where China is going led by that Mao wannabe.
Unfortunately when people feel under attack or in trouble, they start retreating into their core / conservative identity.
For China, that seems to be Mao's time instead of Deng Xiaoping's.

Sure thing, as soon as the pandemic is over, I'm planning on going to Taiwan as my next vacation destination.
@@neroarchangel They say they are not "Chinese" so that people dont confuse them with PRC Chinese.

When I spent a year in China as a intern in 2003/2004, I befriended a young English engineer, working for a German company on the same site as me. He was really talented with languages, had learned German in no time and he was already telling jokes in Mandarin after 2 months in China, when I had just learned how to order food at a restaurant and read street signs and bus plans.
He dated a Chinese girl and fell in love and ultimately ended up quitting his engineering job to stay in China and become a English teacher.
I wonder what happened to him and whether he stayed in that career till now.

About 8 years ago, I was getting ready to graduate from college and I decided I wanted to teach English abroad. But I really didn’t feel comfortable living there, and I’d always been more interested in Japanese culture. Even though I knew I wouldn’t make as much money in Japan, I decided that was the best place for me to go, and I’ll always be thankful I made that choice.
