Watching the video and pausing it for a moment.
I am really happy that you made this one. I only discovered these channels of you and laowhy86 several months ago (half a year maybe? Been watching every video since then and also watched most of the older ones) and even though it's pretty clear that what you guys talk about clearly are true and important, I never understood the focus on China (even though you both lived there for so long) and your determination to show the world what's going on there.
I never understood why this all is so absolutely important to you both, even though several topics clearly do affect the rest of the world.
I hope to get wiser from this video.
Continuing watching the video now. :-)
Sorry for the weird formulations; I'm not entirely sober anymore at this moment. :P
Edit: God dammit! @5:11 I was just taking another shot right at that moment! :D

It goes deeper than that too. The entire Chinese perspective is baffling. If you go on say, Quora, you can interact with the Chinese public phase pretty heavily. Serpentza discusses well how it is in China, but one also must see how China views the rest of the world. They extrapolate the concept that you can't criticize China but also, that any country that does criticize or disagree with them is actually a puppet of China's enemies. What this indicates is that China does not believe in the sovereignty and agency of other countries.

Eh...I mean, if you know the history between the two countries(Rape of Nanking) and all that, it isn't too surprising. China and S. Korea get along with Japan economically, but not all the citizenry have warm and fuzzy feelings about Japan. I don't think that's even a CCP condoned thing either. Abe and XI actually got along well, and Xi issued condolences upon his death. Yeah, doesn't mean much in politics, but still, it's something, and yeah, you'll still have the CCP kicking up anti-Japanese sentiment over the disputed islands and territorial waters.

We have lost our civil rights to protest here in Russia.
The court have awarded me with severe fines twice for publicly criticizing Russian army, and I am afraid to speak more, because the next case would be a criminal offence with a possible jail time, not just a fine.
Sad times have came to Russia. We had rights to speak openly during the 1990s and 2010s after the terrible USSR has collapsed, but not anymore. The feeling is like the modern variation of USSR is slowly taking its grip over Russia and Belarus...

On my first of 2 trips to Tibet we were invited into local homes. I was surprised to see an enormous photo (wall sized) of Chairman Mao. Each home was required by law to have this in their home. Also, if any items showing the Dali Lama were found they would be severely punished. This was 100’s of kilometers from any large city. I questioned ‘how would they know’? And was told periodically send out squads even to remote areas to check. Also, in Lhasa, we were constantly followed by secret police. They are ridiculously obvious, but we were warned to watch what we said. This was in 2006 & I think it is much worse now with AI recognition.

      Sure!
He went there and at every historic place where he went to, he got elbows against his chest or belly from people who wanted to get inside there before a foreigner (which feels similar to my own experiences with chinese people on vacation in Asian countries like a very old tiny Chinese woman who pushed me back into the elevator because she wanted to get in when I was trying to get out.)
At some point he was just tired and thirsty and wanted to get a drink. He was aware of all the scammers and just decided to ask an old lady who was sitting at a street if there was a reliable place somewhere where he could get a drink.
The lady did speak English and in a very friendly manner she pointed him to a pub closeby.
My brother went inside and said that he did not need a bar lady, he also didn't want a special seat; he just wanted to sit at the bar and have a simple drink.
"You go sit there!", the bar lady said, and pointed at some seats in a corner.
      - "But I don't want to pay for sitting there!", my brother said and after being reassured he went to sit there.
A bar lady came and hit him softly on his shoulder and said: "You buy me a drink!!!"
He clearly said he wasn't interested, and after multiple hits on the shoulder and the same line again, he told her clearly that he was not going to buy her a drink, so she just sat next to him, very grumpy.
(I will cut the story here because on TH-cam, long stories often get deleted. Will continue quickly.)

      Continuing!
So my brother got his simple drink (cola or whatever it was) and he really felt something was wrong.
The bar lady started again to harrass him for buying her a drink and he just decided to pour down the drink down his throat as quickly as he could and he jumped up asking for the bill.
Th bar lady pulled him down to his seat and told him to calm down and sit with her for a while.
He smelled trouble and got up again and wanted to get away, but she pulled him down again for another drink.
This went on and on for a while and at some point he started to feel a bit dizzy.
      Was he poisoned or something?
And then he got the bill. I forgot the exact amount but it was several hundreds of dollars, maybe close to a thousand!
He shouted at the tiny old female owner (who was standing in front of him) what the efffff this was all about and saw in the bill that it was for the drink, the service of bringing the drink to him, the seat, the company of the bar lady, the mandatory drinks that he had to buy for the bar lady etc etc etc.

Don't worry mate. I spent nine years in 3 provinces (Guangxi, Guangdong, and Fujian), I left in July.
I knew Chinese history and what had been done, but I thought that was in the past.
My day-to-day life wasn't really affected by the government, just a few "eye-roll moments"....T.I.C!
But slowly...a drip, drip, drip of mean, illogical, xenophobic policies handed down from the central CCP started to push into that life.
Leaving hurt. I loved my city, my job, my relationships, and the memories.
But the longer I stayed, the more I felt like a "mafia wife" (I know my husband does bad things, but I shut up and take the money)
Now working in Vietnam (authoritarian I know), but I don't need a VPN, Google APPS work, I haven't seen a camera or a cop in a month, and loads of Korean and Japanese products are available in the shops. Importantly, the people here are friendly, appreciate my help in developing their country, and don't treat me with suspicion.

We had an ethics component in nursing school because so many of the cadavers sent to the college from countries like Pakistan were murdered older relatives who wanted the money paid for the corpse. One of the subjects we covered were the selling of organs taken from political prisoners in china without the use of anesthesia. You can't take an organ from a dead person. They need oxygen to be useful, so the donor has to at least be breathing. Is it ethical to receive organs taken from living political prisoners in chana? No. After I graduated there was this traveling show from china of real bodies that had been plasticized. They were bodies of young people in different positions with their skin removed and all organs and muscles plasticized with glass eyes. I didn't go to see them even though friends told me it was interesting because all I could think was, "are these political prisoners who've been plasticized and sold?" It's heartbreaking. In china the very citizens themselves are a commodity, a resource to the government.

Ouch! It’s totally awful and disgusting, what they do to their own people in China. There’s a interview on TH-cam, from a Chinese surgeon, who in the late 90s. He was forced to do organ harvesting in a small town. Outside of the prying eyes. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into. Until it was too late. And he couldn’t say no. It traumatized him. That he finally fled China. He now lives in the UK. Being like a taxi driver, or something like that. And he says he doesn’t regret it still. That shows, how horrified he truly was. It’s horrifically sad. This needs to be spoken out loudly, and not covered up by China’s force onto our countries. China bullies, all of the western countries, to be quiet. Yet they attack us all the time. And we do nothing about it and allow them to do it. it’s total BS!

The other thing that used to really bother me was the ..."You think you know China better than Chinese people!". Quite frankly, in many ways I do. America could not get to where it is today without the countless critics over the centuries being heard. Even the most patriotic "Proud to be American" individual has plenty of criticisms of America. Chances are, if you have something to criticize about America, you're probably not the only person with that criticism and although not every criticism will be heard and lead to change for the better in America, you at least have a chance to voice it and hope it'll lead to something better, unlike in China.

"Unlike China, you can criticize your country and government in America and most other Western countries."
You can criticize China as long as you keep it your private opinion. But as soon you go public with your private opinion you will get yourself into trouble. So, you can have wonderful discussions about politics, human rights, religion and things more like that with friends and family. But don't do that in a public space e.g. as a teacher at a school.
"You at least have a chance to voice it and hope it'll lead to something better, unlike in China."
That is true! As said: as soon as you go public (= voicing it) you will have to face the consequences in China. Those won't be severe from the start, but as often as you repeatedly keep on going public with your critics the more severe the consequences will become.

My nephew has a similar story. Worked in the food business in China, and taught English (he was fluent in Chinese) in addition to his “day” job primarily exporting food to the US. He absolutely loved his time (13yrs in country), however approximately 2 years prior to the Beijing Olympics, he and a friend were walking by the Birds Nest and he took a photo on his iPhone and quite literally was deported on the spot. He was advised don’t even think about returning until after the Olympics. He left with his girlfriend who was a high powered CEO of a German clothing company with access to exceptional counsel, to no avail. They tried returning a week later from Thailand and we denied entry. My nephew and his boss in Beijing were somewhat well connected here in the US and even the state department failed to gain entry. It’s been many years and he’s not returned since that episode. He loved all the good things you speak of, condemned the bad privately for his protection. As a human being living in this beautiful planet, we'd better showing more welblessings to the other people, less curses or hatreds.

@@xbender521China has far better infrastructure and security? Really? Explain why the chinese haven't moved into these tall buildings? Over 300 million can move into yet they can't. Explain why these buildings are falling apart? And about the better security. Its a communist totalitarian country. CCP invested billions upon billions to monitor, control, watch, and dictate its people. I already hear chinese rich moving its money out of the country and hundreds chinese illegally entering the US. Why? Because they know mainland China sucks!
What bullshit saying "china has better infrastructure and better security". When you see buildings, roads, and bridges falling apart after 3 years being built. And better security when I hear thousands of chinese escaping to the west especially rich chinese finding ways to move its money out of China. I seen the videos, heard the witness. Yet this bullshitter spewing lies. Be lucky I dont meet you in person. I hate CCP supporters.

@@xbender521haha that is the biggest load of crap ever, China has the worst infrastructure in the world, it's unbelievable and quite frankly stupid how people believe the bs, U can look and research for yourself as it's all easy to find information from different sources including the ccps own information. The propaganda the CCP put out about their world leading cities is so retarded and believed only by the retarded. The laughable infrastructure is useless ie major drainage systems that are all show and not connected to anything, building after building collapsing due to the rampant coruption that goes along with every new construction therefore instead of appropriate building materials for projects inferior materials much much cheaper are used so that more officials get more bribes and bridges roads footpaths along with countless other amenities are so poorly built with substandard materials with the inevitable outcome of failure and unfortunately for the poor citizens death, a very common outcome unfortunately but U can guarantee no official who took bribes or any party member for that matter and party members are the most corrupt of them all as the construction companies are all state owned but even when kids die like they did recently due to a roof collapsing no official was even reprimanded as usual in these common situations anyway don't try to make out China has good infrastructure as everyone already knows that is laughable

I enjoy your content, very thought provoking. I am an immigrant-turned-citizen in the US, and you are entitled to criticize legitimate concerns. I totally understand the expectation of the Western folks to just be able to freely stand and voice your discontent. It isn't like that elsewhere, and I don't fault the Westerners for their expectation at all. I came from the post Soviet space and there was little civility there and what you say about China was a similar circumstance in Russia.

They taught and encouraged kids to be hateful against those they don’t like. Love the truths you revealed. Love the freedoms we have. People need to stand up for their rights or they will be living in the prison all their lives so their next generations. Support you always!
