Watching the video and pausing it for a moment.
I am really happy that you made this one. I only discovered these channels of you and laowhy86 several months ago (half a year maybe? Been watching every video since then and also watched most of the older ones) and even though it's pretty clear that what you guys talk about clearly are true and important, I never understood the focus on China (even though you both lived there for so long) and your determination to show the world what's going on there.
I never understood why this all is so absolutely important to you both, even though several topics clearly do affect the rest of the world.
I hope to get wiser from this video.
Continuing watching the video now. :-)
Sorry for the weird formulations; I'm not entirely sober anymore at this moment. :P
Edit: God dammit! @5:11 I was just taking another shot right at that moment! :D

Korea get along with Japan economically, but not all the citizenry have warm and fuzzy feelings about Japan. I don't think that's even a CCP condoned thing either. Abe and XI actually got along well, and Xi issued condolences upon his death. Yeah, doesn't mean much in politics, but still, it's something, and yeah, you'll still have the CCP kicking up anti-Japanese sentiment over the disputed islands and territorial waters.

If you give up your means of self defense the government can do what it wants and you have no way to fight back. A lot of Americans think we should all give up that right but they only think that because times are relatively easy and peaceful. If times were tough like in your country or other countries they'd be glad to have a means of self defense. I pray one day the Iranian people will live free and peaceful. It goes deeper than that too. The entire Chinese perspective is baffling. If you go on say, Quora, you can interact with the Chinese public phase pretty heavily. Serpentza discusses well how it is in China, but one also must see how China views the rest of the world. They extrapolate the concept that you can't criticize China but also, that any country that does criticize or disagree with them is actually a puppet of China's enemies. What this indicates is that China does not believe in the sovereignty and agency of other countries.

My day-to-day life wasn't really affected by the government, just a few "eye-roll moments"....T.I.C!

Leaving hurt. I loved my city, my job, my relationships, and the memories.

He went there and at every historic place where he went to, he got elbows against his chest or belly from people who wanted to get inside there before a foreigner (which feels similar to my own experiences with chinese people on vacation in Asian countries like a very old tiny Chinese woman who pushed me back into the elevator because she wanted to get in when I was trying to get out.)
At some point he was just tired and thirsty and wanted to get a drink. He was aware of all the scammers and just decided to ask an old lady who was sitting at a street if there was a reliable place somewhere where he could get a drink.
The lady did speak English and in a very friendly manner she pointed him to a pub closeby.
My brother went inside and said that he did not need a bar lady, he also didn't want a special seat; he just wanted to sit at the bar and have a simple drink.
"You go sit there!", the bar lady said, and pointed at some seats in a corner.
      - "But I don't want to pay for sitting there!", my brother said and after being reassured he went to sit there.
A bar lady came and hit him softly on his shoulder and said: "You buy me a drink!!!"
He clearly said he wasn't interested, and after multiple hits on the shoulder and the same line again, he told her clearly that he was not going to buy her a drink, so she just sat next to him, very grumpy.
(I will cut the story here because on TH-cam, long stories often get deleted. Will continue quickly.)

      Continuing!
So my brother got his simple drink (cola or whatever it was) and he really felt something was wrong.
The bar lady started again to harrass him for buying her a drink and he just decided to pour down the drink down his throat as quickly as he could and he jumped up asking for the bill.
Th bar lady pulled him down to his seat and told him to calm down and sit with her for a while.
He smelled trouble and got up again and wanted to get away, but she pulled him down again for another drink.
This went on and on for a while and at some point he started to feel a bit dizzy.
      Was he poisoned or something?
And then he got the bill. I forgot the exact amount but it was several hundreds of dollars, maybe close to a thousand!
He shouted at the tiny old female owner (who was standing in front of him) what the efffff this was all about and saw in the bill that it was for the drink, the service of bringing the drink to him, the seat, the company of the bar lady, the mandatory drinks that he had to buy for the bar lady etc etc etc.
(Cutting the reply again because I'd hate it if everything would get deleted.)

We had an ethics component in nursing school because so many of the cadavers sent to the college from countries like Pakistan were murdered older relatives who wanted the money paid for the corpse. One of the subjects we covered were the selling of organs taken from political prisoners in china without the use of anesthesia. You can't take an organ from a dead person. They need oxygen to be useful, so the donor has to at least be breathing. Is it ethical to receive organs taken from living political prisoners in chana? No. After I graduated there was this traveling show from china of real bodies that had been plasticized. They were bodies of young people in different positions with their skin removed and all organs and muscles plasticized with glass eyes. I didn't go to see them even though friends told me it was interesting because all I could think was, "are these political prisoners who've been plasticized and sold?" It's heartbreaking. In china the very citizens themselves are a commodity, a resource to the government.

Ouch! It’s totally awful and disgusting, what they do to their own people in China. There’s a interview on TH-cam, from a Chinese surgeon, who in the late 90s. He was forced to do organ harvesting in a small town. Outside of the prying eyes. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into. Until it was too late. And he couldn’t say no. It traumatized him. That he finally fled China. He now lives in the UK. Being like a taxi driver, or something like that. And he says he doesn’t regret it still. That shows, how horrified he truly was. It’s horrifically sad. This needs to be spoken out loudly, and not covered up by China’s force onto our countries. China bullies, all of the western countries, to be quiet. Unlike China, you can criticize your country and government in America and most other Western countries. No country is perfect and that includes America. America could not get to where it is today without the countless critics over the centuries being heard. Even the most patriotic "Proud to be American" individual has plenty of criticisms of America. Chances are, if you have something to criticize about America, you're probably not the only person with that criticism and although not every criticism will be heard and lead to change for the better in America, you at least have a chance to voice it and hope it'll lead to something better, unlike in China.

"Unlike China, you can criticize your country and government in America and most other Western countries."
You can criticize China as long as you keep it your private opinion. But as soon you go public with your private opinion you will get yourself into trouble. So, you can have wonderful discussions about politics, human rights, religion and things more like that with friends and family. But don't do that in a public space e.g. as a teacher at a school.
"You at least have a chance to voice it and hope it'll lead to something better, unlike in China."
That is true! As said: as soon as you go public (= voicing it) you will have to face the consequences in China. Those won't be severe from the start, but as often as you repeatedly keep on going public with your critics the more severe the consequences will become.

On my first of 2 trips to Tibet we were invited into local homes. I was surprised to see an enormous photo (wall sized) of Chairman Mao. Each home was required by law to have this in their home. Also, if any items showing the Dali Lama were found they would be severely punished. This was 100’s of kilometers from any large city. I questioned ‘how would they know’? And was told periodically send out squads even to remote areas to check. Also, in Lhasa, we were constantly followed by secret police. They are ridiculously obvious, but we were warned to watch what we said. This was in 2006 & I think it is much worse now with AI recognition.

My nephew has a similar story. Worked in the food business in China, and taught English (he was fluent in Chinese) in addition to his “day” job primarily exporting food to the US. He absolutely loved his time (13yrs in country), however approximately 2 years prior to the Beijing Olympics, he and a friend were walking by the Birds Nest and he took a photo on his iPhone and quite literally was deported on the spot. He was advised don’t even think about returning until after the Olympics. He left with his girlfriend who was a high powered CEO of a German clothing company with access to exceptional counsel, to no avail. They tried returning a week later from Thailand and we denied entry. My nephew and his boss in Beijing were somewhat well connected here in the US and even the state department failed to gain entry. It’s been many years and he’s not returned since that episode. He loved all the good things you speak of, condemned the bad privately for his protection. All that for 1 simple picture, but they must have been paranoid about any disruptions at the Birds Nest.

I'm not a youtuber or anything, but I am a guy that moved to China and fell in love with it much in the same way that I think Winston did. I want to touch on something that I suspect is true for many people who felt forced to leave China for their own safety. My life in China was amazing. It was so different than growing up in small town America. So many new experiences, every day truly feels like an adventure, even after years of living there. I initially went for a year just for the experience, but I so fell in love with the country and the life there that I wanted to make it my home, I wanted to settle down there.
Amidst all those adventures there were horrors, tragedies, injustices, mostly not happening to me but around me. You turn the blind eye to it initially, because hey no place is perfect and this is just the ways that China needs to improve, right. You can tell yourself that for years, you can truly make yourself believe it. Then one day it will come for you and those you care about. At that point you really only have two choices. You can deny reality and continue on living a lie hoping for the best, or you can accept that the Chinese people as a whole will never see you as Chinese and accept you fully as a human being as a result, and that you are constantly one step away from imminent peril as a result.
I never wanted to leave China, I built a life there, a home, the beginnings of a family, and I had to make the terrible choice to leave it all behind. Honestly it broke me, I felt that my entire life was stolen from me, robbed from me when I did nothing wrong, in fact when I thought I was doing things right. I wasn't lucky enough to get my family out, I truly lost everything i'd been working for. It hit me so hard that here I am years later still not really recovered from it. It broke something inside me that can't be fixed. Going through an experience like that, the trauma it imbues on your heart and soul, it removes any remaining veil you may have had towards the CCP and what they do and stand for. It's just such a great sadness, knowing my own experience and being fully aware how much worse the Chinese people themselves are treated, people I loved and cared deeply for. I will speak out against the CCP for the remainder of my existence for my own personal loss and the awareness of the loss of so many others.

    • @fs5775
      @fs5775 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I am so sorry for your traumatizing experience. You chose the noble path and owned up to reality like Winston did. I also fled China but during the Shanghai lockdown last year. I hadn't made such connections there, though I loved teaching my university students there and was sad to leave them. Leaving China forever after having been locked down like an animal for months was an incredible feeling. The US felt soooooo *gentle* and *humane* in 2022 after China. I am soooooo grateful for my homeland and the rights that I have. Rights that I never genuinely appreciated before. What a gift that I wish more Americans would recognize and appreciate. God bless you and good for you speaking out against the CCP.

@@LaNina_DJ I've always been a devout believer in tough love. It was something I learned as a child through the whole 'give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him forever' story. I used to love life, I used to really enjoy other people, I used to look at a new day as a new adventure. Now i'm a coward, too fearful of loss to engage with people and form meaningful relationships, in fact I actively push people away. I can go days, sometimes even weeks without speaking to another human being. I both fear and long for my dreams because they are the only opportunity i'll ever have to see the love of my life again, but most of them turn into nightmares that are quite unsettling to put it mildly. I'm not even a functional human being at this point, at least to my standard of what constitutes being human. I don't say these things because I want or expect your pity. They are just simply my reality, and that's ok. I can accept that and exist until I don't. At least I got to be truly happy at a point in my life, and heck maybe that's enough. Ultimately it's entirely my fault that I was in a situation where I could lose everything so easily. Twas a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. I take full ownership for putting myself in this position.
All that being said for a bit of context, I can tell you with confidence that I do not feel remotely grateful for being broken. I left the best parts of myself half a world away and that's not something i'll ever celebrate. I don't know that i'll ever get them back. Perhaps a stronger man could, but I've discovered the hard way that i'm not that guy. On a bright note though i've learned something from pondering your message. Tough love is just not the fix for deep-seated trauma. I don't know what is, but that's not it. I need to be more mindful of that when I interact with others. Thanks for that.

@@fs5775 I appreciate your perspective, but please don't think that i'm noble. I'm not noble. There is no honor in running away and leaving the love of your life, that which you should covet and protect above all else, behind. I'm glad to hear that you have a newfound appreciation for how special America really is. This is a time when that ideal is very much under assault, and we need voices of wisdom and conscience to speak up and be heard so that we don't allow the things that make America so special to be lost.

@@rebekahchalkley3252 Thank you for your kindness. You are right actually, it's really not easy to be gentle towards yourself. It's so true that we are our own worst enemy. It's easy to deal with bad things happening to me, at least for me. The hard part is coming to terms with the fact that my own foolishness put me in a situation where I lost so much, and that's a very bitter pill to swallow. It is what it is though, lol.

Even staunch nationalists in western countries will criticize their governments. It leads to improvement. If you have a loved one, who is doing badly, you want to explain to them what the issue is, and help them to get better, because you love them, and see their potential, but if you can't criticise them, and point out what's wrong, they'll continue down a path of self destruction.

"You may choose to ignore politics, but politics will not ignore you..."
A valuable lesson I wish more people could learn.
"If there is a problem, we talk about it. It may not be resolved, but it will never be if no one talk about it..."
This is something not just China, but alot of Asian like myself never thought about it. To most asian, especially chinese. We will have this mindset of, "If we don't talk about it, then it never happened" or "We don't talk about it,let someone else solve it". Unfortunately, these has become a bad trait for us Chinese/Asians. And even if we came to realize it was a bad trait, we get put down by those who surround us immediately. Because "A nail that sticks out, will be hammered".
However, I'm a lonewolf anyway. If I let those who surrounded me, decides who I am and what I am not. Then I am no longer me.
And thank you @serpentza for choosing not to ignore what CCP/CPC has done, and speaks out for those who couldn't. Stay awesome~👍

America has changed too. Our freedoms are being slowly taken piece by piece with amendments here and there and slight rule and law changes. People are idiots not paying attention. Actually even if they're not idiots they are still oblivious to it because they are being kept so busy working and handling family lives etc. Basically always busy. Keep them busy and they won't notice the hanging noose being tightened around their necks.
