If you inserted a dowel or pin in the centre hole on the first/bottom layer, you would have had a perfect alignment guide for the subsequent layers. There would have been no need to eyeball it.
I’ve tried that before and a few things happen. The dowel or pin can either be loose or too tight causing the next layer to shift around as it’s being placed or the dowel being glued into the finished piece. Maybe I just need to finesse it a bit and figure out a good pin and size.
