    In the spring of 1990, I was on a bus outside of Eddyville, Iowa that was going down a muddy back road and ended up flipping on its side. There was no top emergency exit, and the back door was blocked by trees. We were on the side with the normal door. The high school kids opened some windows and shoved the elementary kids (including me) on to the new top of the bus. The driver kicked out the windshield and he and the older kids went through there. Then some older kids (HS) walked to a nearby house to call the school and have them come pick us up.
    It was a long time before the district completely replaced all the busses like that one. So, yeah, some busses don't have an emergency exit....

    Ironically enough, the Wayne Lifeguard was one of the safest buses in the road for it's time. The bus was built with as little panel gaps as possible to reduce the chances of the bus separating on impact on a crash, therefore reducing the risk of child injury. In 1982, a Wayne Lifeguard was struck broadside by a fire truck at an intersection. The fire truck quite literally bounced off the side of the bus, thanks to the bus's one panel design. Only one student was injured in the crash.

    Even brand new buses in my district have no emergency exit windows. They're not required in my state. However, we do have emergency exit doors on both sides of the bus (or on the left side and the rear on non-rear engine buses) and roof hatches

    • @MobileTaz
      @MobileTaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a formula based on the seating capacity for the number and size of egress openings. It does not specify that it there needs to be windows, only that there is some combination of exits that adds up to the required openings on each side. It's up to the manufacturer and the buyer what gets built. Basically anything over 45 passengers requires 2 windows or a door (in addition to the rear door and kickout windows). Roof hatches are required on buses with a capacity over 63. Over 71 passengers requires an additional door or two windows and an additional roof hatch. So by federal standards, 2 doors and 2 roof hatches, as well as the rear exit, are fine. That went into effect for MY1995, So the Walker that Claw mentioned was probably a 1994.
      And that's just the bare minimum, they can be built with more. Our 84 passenger RE buses have 6 windows, 2 doors, and 2 hatches.

    Not in Kentucky. Since 1990 Kentucky school buses require 9 total exits. A rear, a side, two roof hatch, four emergency window, plus service door override, and window shield able to be kicked out.
    Air break is required only anti-lock required before federal mandate, air door, diesel engine, propane, only, extra caging around fuel tank, Kentucky school bus standards are higher than any other state, except West Virginia which is in line with Kentucky.
    It also takes 8 weeks of training, and yearly recertification to become a school bus driver in Kentucky.
    Kentucky has been a leader in school bus safety for more years then just about any other state.

    Where I live, I’ve ridden in a 1993 Carpenter school bus that had window and roof emergency exits a couple times in middle school. Now lap and shoulder seatbelts in school buses are pretty much the norm. I’ve ridden those seatbelt equipped school buses in high school and it was 2010 when I’ve daily ridden in those buses until 2013 and it’s nice. I missed riding the school bus since 2013.
