    The added versatility of movement combos cappy adds is absolutely my favorite aspect of the game. I don't care if capture abilities return, as much as I'm enjoying sections where I need to control pokio specifically (to the point of can we get a bit of polish on Pokio's gameplay and a captain toad sized mid-range game with just that, please? Is that just me who wants that?) I just want cappy to stick around because of the additional movement options, and how much he improves Mario's move feel for me, he provides. Mario has always had good game feel, but the versatility of this moveset? Blows the previous Mario games out the water. I never want to go back to not having long jump into cap throw into dive to cap into cap jump into cap throw into dive for the longest jump I recall seeing in a 3d platformer outside of an actual hover or fly command. (Though I haven't gotten round to A Hat In Time yet, maybe the air dash and dash cancel shenanigans you highlighted in your video on that game acts an equivalent? Not sure I'll get chance to prior to Xenoblade 2, particularly with my focus at the moment being the board game Pandemic Legacy Season 2 and my wanting a palette clenser in video game form between 3d platforming games and my not being entirely done with Odyssey yet)
    Give us playable peach, luigi and toad again all with their version of cappy. Give us different one game gimmicks to the capture on top of this move set. But if variants of Mario 64's moveset are what defined the past two decades of 3d Mario, I want this as the base way I want 3d Mario to play for the next two. I never want to go back to 3d Mario without this ability set.

    Personally, one of my favorite things in this game is just watching the Odyssey fly from one area to another. The amount of detail they put into those transitions is just icing on the cake. It's especially noticeable in the last few levels, but the game does have a different set piece for that short scene for every level, even though most people will probably just skip through them anyway.

    My favorite thing about Oyssey is how it taught the player things without textboxes. Of course they do it often times at the start of the game but they aren't obnoxious about it. Sadly I don't remember any examples because it has been too long but I recall realizing multiple times how this game lets you play around with mechanics that are needed later without having to straight up tell you what to do. This game is designed to be accessible to new players like children or simply those who've never played a Mario game before, while also appealing to Mario veterans that can simply ignore the tutorial and discover new mechanics or abilities on their own.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I definitely agree! My one complaint is Cappy telling you your moves as you travel to new locations in the Odyssey, but luckily once you beat the game he stops doing that. They definitely let the reigns go compared to other Mario titles tho

    The thing about Odyssey that stuck out to me, that no one else seems to be talking about, is that it feels a lot more solitary than the previous few Mario games, and I don't mean that in a bad way. In the galaxy games you had so many other characters along with you on your ship that It just felt like one big huge party that everyone was in on, rather than the idea that it's just you and Mario on the adventure together, and honestly made me feel quite disconnected from the galaxy games as a result. Odyssey feels much more like the original Mario experience, where the focus is much heavier on Mario, and yourself for that matter.

    Super Mario Odyssey has design flaws with the moons. Either they're too easy (like the moon on the ledge in Lost Kingdom), too hidden (like all of the vibration moons and the dog moons), or wants to make us tear our hair (like the jump rope moon), or actually good, but good luck finding the latter category after you complete the story.

    I know this comment is coming a year after the majority of the others, but I feel too strongly not to comment anyway.
    One thing I love about this game that other people have touched on as well is the accessibility of it. I have a 3yo, and she loves this game. She can actually play, navigate, and find some moons on her own. There’s plenty for her to do and explore in the game that is entirely accessible to her as a brand new gamer (and I MEAN brand new...this game has literally taught her how to use a control stick and other buttons in conjunction).
    At the same time, it’s been a blast and a challenge for me to play too. I’ve enjoyed the platforming challenges and the myriad of collectibles all over the place. It’s quickly become one of my favorite games, and it’s one I’m going to enjoy playing for a very long time.
    I just bought a Wii the other day so I can play Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy 2, and those games feel so incredibly clunky and difficult now because I’ve spent so much time recently playing Odyssey. It’s crazy to me, especially considering Sunshine is another one of my favorite games of all time and one I’ve put a lot of time and effort into. Notably, my 3yo can hardly play them. The pointing mechanics of the Wii-mote are super difficult for her (plus the placement of the A and B buttons on the front and back of the controller), and the GameCube controller - which holds a lot of nostalgia for me - is very difficult for her, especially with both Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion’s intense usage of the R button. It’s just too many buttons in too many various places on the controller for her to really keep track of. In Odyssey, in the other hand, though she can’t do all the moves - she definitely can’t do the hat throw and dive combo, for example - she’s perfectly fine doing the basics, and the basics are perfectly fine for generally running around levels and collecting some moons and coins and things. It’s so intuitive for her on a level that astounded me, especially compared to her difficulty with other games.
    I really do think this is the best Mario game ever made, and I did not think that I would feel this way going in.

  • @jjtheenton

    I was never a huge fan of the previous sandbox Super Mario games due to two major factors: hub worlds and the lack of traditional platforming. I can't stand hub worlds in platformers (and this is unfortunately something that extended to every other sandbox platformer back in the 90's, which hindered my enjoyment of them, as well). I just want to move on from level to level, and they completely prevent that. In addition, what makes me love level design in platforming is getting from the start to the end of a linear segment of progressing challenges, and sandbox platformers just didn't provide that. They were collectathons that had you complete a given objective, and booted you out of the level upon doing so.
    Super Mario Odyssey, however, completely obliterates these two issues. Every level is its own sprawling world that offers both exploration and linear platforming segments, which flow together seamlessly. Outside of the main goals, you aren't told what objectives there are, rather you have to locate Power Moons with your own wit, much like Banjo-Kazooie, and the main goals are almost always purely linear platforming segments. The sheer amount of creativity and movement options added onto this make everything come together to form what is easily the greatest sandbox platformer to date, and the first one I've thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
    DKC: Tropical Freeze is still my favorite platformer of all time, but Odyssey sure gives it a run for its money.

      @snomangaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That is a really interesting take on hub worlds, I always felt like it was an additional world to play through since it always had secrets as well. It's like the world that you learned like the back of your hand because you visited it so much, and added to a lot of games' theming, while also feeling like a safe break after the regular stages. But hey, to each their own, and I'm glad Odyssey has given you that reprieve. I liked that there wasn't a hub here either, it fit better into this game for sure :)

    • @jjtheenton
      @jjtheenton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      snowmaN Gaming
      I'm glad that others can enjoy hub worlds, but they've always felt like nothing more than padding to me. They were mostly large, empty space that had little-to-no connection to the themes of the levels (though Banjo-Kazooie and Conker certainly did a better job at the latter), and they arbitrarily blocked your progression with doors that needed a certain amount of collectibles to progress. That's also something Odyssey alleviates: awkward progression. Needing to power up the Odyssey to move on to different kingdoms provides an in-game reason as to why you need to collect Power Moons, which is something I didn't even think about until typing this comment.
      If there's one thing I can say, though, it's that A Hat in Time managed to not irritate me with its hub world, due to its small size and heavy connection to the various level themes, transitioning into them nicely. It's very refreshing to have enjoyed sandbox platformers so much for the first time in such a short time span within just one year.

      Gokou Blacc I like all the points you make but I absolutely cannot stand linear games at all. Also, I think delfino plaza was genius because it somewhat connected the theme of the levels (Gelato Beach on the beach, blasting to Pina Park) and you could see all of the levels from different parts of the world. Also, delfino plaza was smaller and easier to traverse than banjo Kazooie and it DP had tons of secrets

    Though I thoroughly enjoyed Odyssey, I feel the need to play a bit of devil's advocate here. The positives have been discussed to death at this point.
    Maybe Galaxy just spoiled me, but I feel like the camera could have been better. And this isn't just a linear vs. pen world thing. Much of the time it made automatic adjustments against my wishes. And the lack of separate inversion setting for first and third person views made aiming the tank gun really unintuitive for someone who inverts third person because they think of the controls as moving the camera. Breath of the Wild has a very similar camera that never makes any movements unrelated to the player's direct input. It also doesn't have the inversion problem because it aims in an over-the-shoulder RE4 style.
    Mario himself feels a bit stiff. He starts and stops with such ease that it kills the sense of momentum 64 and even 3D Land had. The stiffness was especially difficult to get used to in the 2D sections. Seeing the original SMB sprite with such little momentum is jarring. And this might just be down to the joycons, but it was very difficult to move Mario slowly. There was very little space between running at full speed and not moving at all. The lack of octagonal grooves on the thumbstick doesn't help matters either. The camera always seems to wind up directly above Mario because of this.
    Drastically reducing the penalty for death caused a few issues too. While it allows for a more difficult game and encourages risk taking and exploration, it also excuses poorer conveyance sloppy play.
    But my biggest gripe comes down to the button selection. I understand the choice to use only 3 buttons, but I really think the game would have benefited from separating the Cappy button from the run button. The biggest problem with this is that Mario doesn't require holding Y to run (except in 2D) but nearly every other controllable entity does. 600+ moons in and this still messes me up constantly. Mapping Cappy to X would have alleviated this problem, as well as others, and freed up the shoulder buttons to be used while possessing things. It took me ages to get used to diving because the input was changed from the intuitive SM64 method to a more contrived method reminiscent of a Mortal Kombat special move.
    That said, it's still a 9/10 for me. Those are just the reasons it wasn't a 10/10. Mostly the last one.

    hey snowman, i would like to see you make a video about kirby star allies... and how they looked at coopritive AIs and took that, and re-worked it to be better. like, i love how there is a notification thing when the AI friend is about to do something, it adds some notice to an otherwise random looking action.

    One thing I hate though is the fact no matter what hat you wear when you capture an enemy it is always wearing Mario's iconic red cap

    100% agree, it's an awesome game .. and it gets even better the more you play it, since it's more fun the more you understand what moves and shortcuts are actually possible :D

    Peaches castle. The MARIO 64 hommage blew me away. To see that same land in high def was definitely a TREAT!!! And how much bigger the grounds than MARIO 64 was just the cherry on top :D

      peachy553 I liked it too as I thought the game didn't have anything left to show me (how naive), but I actually enjoyed the Super Mario World homage more (yoshi's house with the fireplace)

    The depressing thing is how it's so linear compared to 64 and I can't explain how

      I feel the opposite personally: Odyssey if anything is the most open moving 3D Mario since 64. Sunshine came close but is restricted in that you MUST do all the Shadow Mario sections to progress, and the Galaxy duo opted for a middle ground approach of 3D movement but with set courses/routes like the more classic games.

    I honestly found the capturing aspect a bit underwhelming. I thought it would be more universal, but instead you can only really capture very arbitrary specific things, which are usually placed in exactly the right place for you to use them. The end result kind of feels no different from power ups in previous games, rather than being a new mechanic that you have to use in clever ways.
