On y go! Did this in the same direction in the eighties in an elderly Avenger on the way to Wasdale. Bonnet blocked the view of the road going up Hardknott and then no brakes when I got down. Would love to do it on a dirt bike... Nice to see that downers still remember to give way to uppers.
I went through both passes about 10 years ago on my VFR 750... It was great fun but you have to keep your concentration. You certainly know how to manage a hairpin bend when you get to the top..
Recently cam across your channel and got to say its one of the best ive come across, many thanks for the time and effort you put into each of your video`s, you deserve alot more subs. Took the family over the passes a few years ago without there knowledge, got to say my hearing has not been the same since, 🤣😂
Thank you so much for your kind comments. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Those passes certainly polarise opinions - some find them great fun, whilst others are genuinely terrified of them!
I was a passenger in the backseat years ago, I imagine 10-13 and remember feeling as if we were completely vertical. Dad’s car damaged on the way down making room for another driver. An experience!
It’s hard to gauge the steepness in this video, I’ve never done this pass myself but from the video it doesn’t look very scary! Compared to Newlands pass, this looks like a gentle breeze. The land doesn’t seem to fall away steeply at any point. Have you attempted Newlands Pass near Buttermere? Now THAT gives me sweaty palms lol
Just got back from Little Langdale and stayed in one the first houses you drove past with the remote control bollards on the drive about 400 metres from the pub on the right. Walked a lot in the hills but now wish i’d gone up Wrynose and Hardknott 😩
i tried doing the Hardknott this summer on a pan european. the pass was closed due to an accident. now that ive seen clips im sort of glad. but i will definetly come back to the lake district
Did these two passes (started from Hardknott and came down Wrynose) a few years ago in a 12 year old Peugeot 406! Engine overheated on the way up and brakes started smoking on the way down... All my wife told everybody was that there were some amazing views. Didn't see much myself, too busy praying that nothing was coming the other way! Never again 😬
I drove this road a few decades ago, in a little Renault 19 hatchback, with the wife and 2 children in the back. Glad I did it, but-never again. I'm much too risk averse now
My husband and I drove these two passes in late August, these roads are death roads. Sure they look calming and exciting from watching a video, but in reality. It’s an entirely different experience. Wrynose was nerve racking and Hardknott puts the nerves on on a level you never knew you had. NEVER AGAIN shall we come across these passes. I could not see what was coming half the time as the bonnet of the car was in the way.
@cerimaffett1123 Far more accidents happen on your motorways and other roads than these two. Your level of concentration must be top notch. It is nerve-wracking, but I would do it again.
Did not look so bad in video but minute 8 to 9 were the scariest for me when went up in T6. Especially when met an idiot coming down who seemed to think it was ok for me to try and drive with left wheel over edge because he would not pull right up the side. (Not counting fact he kept on coming past to wide passing places.)
Thanks for the comment. No, the Three Shires Stone is not there at the moment. Apparently it fell in 2017, and is presumably still being repaired: www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/15460781.iconic-lake-district-three-shires-stone-is-toppled/
Sat Nav sent me this way on Wednesday..It’s not for the faint hearted especially with the sun shining in your eyes on the way up.I’ll never do it again that’s for sure.☺️
@Darren Lynch: Pro Tip from someone who drives for a living.... When in places like the Lakes don't set for shortest route on Sat nav unless you REALLY like driving.....fun in my 205GTi rather arse puckering when in my extended wheelbase Sprinter in the snow!..... Set for fastest route and you are usually safe (er).
No problem. They''re shot on a GoPro, which is attached to a sucker mount stuck to the roof of the car. Currently using a GoPro Hero 11, which has amazing stabilisation that takes out a lot of shudder. Hope that helps. All the best.
We did both of these passes many years ago in a Ford Mondeo. The problem on the way up was it was so steep, the bonnet of the car got in the way of the view of the road. On the way down we got minor brake fade! I fancy driving these again now we have an EV but I'm struggling to convince my wife that' it's a good idea. Is this filmed in an EV? There's a distinct lack of engine noise.
Great fun, I love driving these roads. The video doesn't do the roads justice as they look far steeper in reality. To a large extent the vehicle that you use can determine your enjoyment of these roads. Do it in something small, agile and with a good power to weight ratio, not a motor home or large lumbering saloon. Don't forget to show good manners and courtesy to other road users, especially important here as it involves safety.
Wrynose gives a false sense of security before... Hardknott horrors (pothole panic, single track terror, blind bends, hairpin hydraulics and burning rubber). 😲
I would love, love, love to drive this road. Though with my luck, I'd come up against an oncoming car at a place where neither of us could pull over, and I couldn't reverse out of it. (My reversing skills are, um, a little lacking.)
I must say this is the best video experience of this mountain pass like a 4k simulator roller coaster or something insaine Awesome ❤❤
Thank you - it certainly causes an interesting range of opinions! It's definitely not a road for everybody....
Yep, Hardknott makes the Honister pass and Belach na Ba in Scotland seem like a walk in the park! Awesome cheers👍👍
Thank you!
Did this drive yesterday. The most nerve racking I’ve ever done. Thanks for the video.
Thank you and well done!
Lovely Footage. Thanks.
Many thanks!
Thanks! Great fun and relaxation!
drove them both. And it was nothing less than epic
It’s an epic bit of road, all right!
I love the lake district. Nice video. I have visited 67 times since the late 1976. 1976 was a scorcher and I baked to death in the heat.
Thank you - by all accounts, a roasting year!

On summer evenings, the road out of Little Langdale is scented with the aroma of burned brakes and sizzling clutches!
All okay if you know in avance that you'll be brakeless...
Excellent video, thank you.
You were lucky not to see any traffic coming the other way 😉
Thank you! There are a few passing places, but it’s tight in places!

There have been a few closures due to accidents this year, but the Lakes are always worth a visit! Thanks for commenting.

Little Langdale often has the smell of burned-out brakes and clutches, so this sounds pretty familiar!

@@penhullwolf5070 just as well we dont live in an area where there’s death roads then.

Thanks for the fond memories. Didn't see the Three Shires Stone. Has it gone these days or did I blink and miss it?

Oof! That’s a pretty intense unexpected drive!
@@LakeDistrictFilms First time I’ve had an anxiety attack when driving😊

May I ask how you record these drives? Is there a particular device/gadget that you used? I’d really love to record some of my journeys like this!

At which point is the hardknott pass
Hardknott is the second of these passes - its summit is at 22:57 in the video. Hope that helps!
Just did these today...omfg what a nightmare

What is the river called that is on the right side.
The River Duddon.
You made it look easy , it truly was the worst day of my life .
Oh no!
Same! We had no idea the sat nav would take us this route….in a work van on a rainy day 😢

That happened to me...I dread to think how close to the edge I was
This is CGI right? But with pretend comments lol.
Cutting edge special effects!
