    This is one of the most valuable videos I have ever seen. You have so much depth. And I like many of the films you have reviewed.

    My friend and I shared this exact topic you expressed in this video. Granted my friend and I are good friends but it took us some fights to get to now. I indulge in conversations without using my device because it's respectful. This is where the issue surfaced with my friend and I he was always on his phone on social media you name it. Some people have serious issues regarding their phones and absolutely we are slaves to our devices. I had to somewhat teach him to be aware of his surroundings and put the phone away and pay attention to your environment, engage in conversations etc. Hes better now but with that being said it makes me so ecstatic there is someone as yourself out there. I've recently found your channel and watched a few of your series toned videos and I can absolutely relate to my own depression my anxiety and how my mind is wired. I feel alone in today's society but I've learned to be ok with myself and everything you described is what I've gone thru struggling with my demons. I love feeling all of the emotions balanced in a healthy way. Nothing feels so extreme anymore I might have surges of happiness and deep depression but it's not as horrible as it used to be. If you ever stumble upon this you have my support and I like you! I am a cinefile myself so it's always nice to hear someone else's passion towards film. I hope you're having a amazing day! And thank you

    You're very intelligent and I very much agree with your view that human beings are doing everything they can to avoid loneliness and boredom. Today's technology promises us instant and constant sense of connection but we all know that loneliness is inescapable, and furthermore loneliness should be embraced however traumatic or undesired we think it is. It is a place where great art and ideas come from and where we can come to terms with our own mortality and the transience of life.

    You hit the nail on the head, it is scary thought exactly how much we could eventually let ourselves be controlled by technology, especially for our children's futures, my sister has four girls and although the eldest (nine) does not own a mobile or smart phone yet, it makes me think if most of us are like this now, just think what the next generations are going to be like and social media itself, what with occulus rift and all those eventual successors - it will go even further.
    I want to try meditation myself because i believe you when you say it can help alot, Ive looked into it abit and makes total sense, because you are kind of excercising your brain. And psychedelic experiences, I could see how they can work immensly, but as you have said, only for certain people, cause we're all different and our bodies and minds work completely different too. Also about what you said to do with missing opportunities, this is what I just wish many people on social media could realize themselves, hooked up to so much like, overload of information, completely agree with you that it can just be totally overwhelming, and again I think you have hit the nail when you said its partly the cause of so much anxiety in many of us today, thats totally true, I'd like to think doctors and medical professions realize this but also as you said, what do they seem to carry on doing? prescribing us more anti-depressants and they so do not help. They do suppress our problems of anxiety and only in many instancies lead to addiction. But yes more of us need to get out there because you just dont know what opportunities can arise, how much we are exchanging in information, communicating through social media, but then how much we are missing out there in our real world, so yes it is kind of getting a balance right as you have explored.
    Lastly again completely agree, art is our natural expression, in whichever form (music, drawing, dancing etc). I myself have recently got back into drawing (after a massive spell of depression), and I have found it so very thereputic, I like to draw famous and iconic scenes from movies and films, Ive recently been working on the burly brawl scene from Matrix Reloaded movie. So yes I think this is a very good thing to get into, just any form of art, you know its funny but many people seem to follow the kind of status quo, they never really discover they may have somekind of hidden talent, because many of them just dont venture outside of their kind of comfort zone, or try something new.
    Thanx for exploring this and sharing your insight :)

    Hey, new subscriber. I'm an avid concert goer and I can vouch for everything you're saying. People would rather experience the show through a 5 inch screen than actually experience what's going on in front of them. Put the damn phones down.

    I only carry a fliphone. People think it's weird, but I'm stopping myself from spending all day online...It's just too tempting. Plus it's cheaper.
    I'm addicted to media in general. I've got a TH-cam queue, a TV show queue. There are films coming out every weekend I want to see. There are more films on disc I'm trying to get caught up on. There's no end to it and it's taking over all my free time.
    I've never done meditation before and I stopped using psychedelics almost 20 years ago. But I do like to get outside...when I can tear myself away from the flatscreen or laptop. I worry about what I'm missing.
    I know this isn't precisely what you talked about in your video, but it struck a chord with me. Thanks for bringing up this issue...thinking about this stuff has actually forced me to stop watching video for about 20 minutes!
    BTW, a friend of mine has had a lot of his videos go out of sync with the sound in much the same way this one has. Any idea what's causing it?

    • @deepfocuslens
      @deepfocuslens  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not seeing any sync issues from my end. Everything looks okay. I used to have those issues back in the day but I was using a different camera. Not sure why that is.

    • @shakestopher
      @shakestopher 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't be the only one seeing this...the video starts off fine, but then the open few seconds of video repeats with the audio continuing on normally. And so nearly the entire video is out of sync with the sound.
      OK, now I'm watching for a second time and everything is normal...do not know what gives.

    Psychedelics? I think this can mess with people's well being if they are not mentally or emotionally fit. but I think all things have a place if there is education and it is used properly.
    one thing that helps boost my mood is to really think and to say out loud what I am grateful for. having a sense of appreciation of day to day life and knowing why I am doing something is always a fresh reboot.
    you mention, many seek a remedy vs a cure. this is normal I think. the cure is always harder and majority of individuals want a quick fix. look at all of the weight loss supplements, self help fads, etc.
    pareto's law of distribution helps me not be so angry at others, not understanding whey people do things, take short cuts, etc. 80% live in the past or future, 20% live in the now.
    great vlog I loved your reviews, each movie I saw was great. thanks once again!

      answers don't arrive quickly, many come to a conclusion with not enough info. Hence, the answer is invalid.
      sometimes gathering the information or facts is the most difficult part to analysing a question. especially ones about life and how to further grow emotionally and spiritually

    I use public transport a lot and I’ve made a point of always having a book with me just so I’m not another person with their phone out.
    The whole phones and social media thing is so much worse with younger people. I remember in my last year of school only one person in my class had a phone. It was only when I was well into college the phones became a thing. It was fine when everyone had a nokia or a motorola. Smart phones is what made things the way they are now.

    I did a lot of LSD and Peyote in the 70's, so I fully understand and can relate to your experience... in the 90's I got into meditation... a lot of the realizations that LSD and Peyote showed me, were reconfirmed during meditation.

    I appreciate the sentiment for sure. I went to a Disturbed concert back in March and everyone around me was filming it the whole time. When you think about it, it's kind of ridiculous. They must be thinking "I've got to record this so I can watch it again with crappy audio!" Why bother? How much more fun they could have if they were 100% focused on the concert itself. Thankfully, I'm not big on social media and don't have many friends (lol) so I've got no reason to be on my phone all the time.
    Not that I'm saying I'm superior for being an introvert, not true. I miss out on a lot of things. I'm kind of a loser, to be honest. My point is, the key is to find a medium.

    • @rsmlinar1720
      @rsmlinar1720 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. At Rammstein concerts the band asks the people to put down their phones and enjoy the concert. Not everyone listens

  • @McLarenMercedes

    "I go to a lot of music festivals and I go to a lot of music concerts." That's common sense and a virtue as far as I'm concerned. I just record a few seconds to *prove* to people I saw this and that artist. Ok, so maybe I'm proud and count those as important experiences in my life. Many of those I see are either cult artists or those who don't tour as often anymore.
    Interesting point about social media and loneliness in our modern world. As for myself: I feel little joy knowing a generic comment of mine got 271 likes in an hour on Facebook whereas something more profound or valid barely got noticed. But that's me. I discovered that saying the "right things" can make somebody like me, who never has owned a particular, desired object, get five to ten times more thumbs up than people making comments who actually speak from their own experience having this thing. I can't believe people are that easily swayed.
    When it comes to mean comments I have a golden rule. "By the third ad hominem I'll go Sigmund Freud on your sorry ass." I think I'm fairly fair.
    Number 1. Wine is fine.
    Number 2. I don't believe that anti-depressants have magic abilities myself and I'm in med school. Besides, most of us are well aware that pharmaceutical companies pitch their happy-pills and their "proven abilities" so I always hold back as much as I deem reasonable. Also, they have a nasty habit of becoming addictive sooner or later. Number 1 works too.
    Number 3. Who brags about their personal happiness on Instagram or Facebook?? Must have blocked all those long ago. :)
    I like the tone of your voice.
    One of these day I might ask you a few questions on Facebook. Don't care about Twitter.

      deepfocuslens That's cool that you know about him. Was it the "Death and the Present Moment" talk? That one is his meditation intro for a lot of people.
      Anyway I only ask because you mentioned artificial intelligence. Sam and some other prominent thinkers are actually worried about the prospects of AI in ways that are somewhat surprising (i.e. not the typical Terminator/Matrix sense). Anyway if you want to check it out I promise you will find it fascinating: www.ted.com/talks/sam_harris_can_we_build_ai_without_losing_control_over_it

    Any recommendations for a type of meditation or a place to start? Not long into fatherhood and realize I won't have much opportunity for psychedelics as I use to which helped dust the cobwebs a bit and I'd like to try something else.

    The Internet has, without a doubt, made things worse for me. It has caused me to stay up very late, sometimes until sunrise. Given my current economic situation, it is very difficult for me to get out of the house, further isolating me from the world. I read and see so many opinions, that I start to feel sick. Despite the fact that I have written several books, the act of writing has become intimidating for me, like every sentence has to be better than the last. When your mind is full of so many ideas, combined with increasing isolation, it can be difficult to appear happy, let alone content.

    A very interesting video; but I think it's a bit bold to label psychedelics as "curing" depression. They can, I'm sure, help you through it, much like medication, but that's not quite the same thing. Depression really doesn't have a "cure" in the normal sense, to be honest.
