  • The TRC Classic Freedom... a Knife i've had for literally over a year yet never yet spoke about. However, it quickly became one of my favourite knives ever! It's very light, super slicy, awesome edge retention and heat treatment and yet strong enough to baton. It's basically the ultimate EDC Knife!

    and 58-59 HRC(ofc true fultang) , should i be afraid of using it to batoning batoning some not very big pice of wood like... lets say 6 milimeter thick ?

    I was about to write a river of words, but I will be quick I guess.
    Beautiful knife, very good steel, hardness in the upper limit of what it can be hardened and tempered to, OK, but I got to think about this common issue in yt knife testing.
    Apparently, most people are concerned about breaking their big €€€, and I understand that, but knife companies as a result are making all their grinds thicker and thicker, their edges more obtuse, reducing the cutting ability (I mean, a knife is primarily to cut, do you agree?) and boosting the blade resistance to breakage... For what?
    For people expecting a knife to cut bricks, metal, batoning enormous twisted grain logs?
    Is like building a Ferrari to be able to climb on trees, the point is completely missing.
    No matter the steel, hardness, geometry is what makes a knife able to cut stuff.
    It's not about this particular knife, is more about this kind of testing.
    That the knife didn't survive a shot is a proof that a knife cannot survive a shot, who ever does this? Knives are to cut, and to cut well, not to be a thick, indestructible cold chisel disguised as a knife.
    Sorry for the rant, it was a bad day I guess

    M390 heat treated to 62 hrc ment to be optimized for slicing, the downside of which - increased brittleness. Lower hrc to 59-60 and you'll have a hard time breaking this knife with the fart gun you using, despite the blade thinness. TRC should've used elmax or sleipner on such design, before sending
    it to dbk.

  • @pioneer540

  • @charliemcawesome5012
    @charliemcawesome5012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Well, honestly I look at the act of shooting the knife as an indication that the knife was heat treated properly. If it wasn’t it would bend and not break. It’s supposed to be 62HRC damnit!!! It better break!

    • @Temporalplace
      @Temporalplace 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      M390 should't brake even at 61-62HRC , why use M390 if u can heat treat 1095 to 62HRC and it will break the same as M390 at that HRC ? The thing about M390 and such steels is that u can heat treat to 62HRC and still keep toughness as with other steels using 59 HRC

    • @vagabond4576

    I've had a Classic Freedom for a while now and I agree with Maarten, it's a wonderful knife for just about everything you could reasonably ask a small knife to do. I like mine enough I've gone and picked up the bigger brother, the "This is Freedom". Unfortunately there's very few steels out there that can pack everything M390 has along with massive impact resistance (especially at 62hrc), it's just a tradeoff. And for most people, I do believe the benefits outweigh the cons by a long shot for a knife like this (pun intended, lol). And damn it guys, making me all hungry and stuff, haha. Great job as always.

    • @nrcha
      @nrcha 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which one do you like better - the Classic Freedom or its bigger brother?

    • @RenoLewis
      @RenoLewis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nrcha That's a difficult question, they're both great. I really enjoy the compact nature of the Classic Freedom, but I think I prefer the larger This is Freedom. It feels like a slightly more substantial knife, fills my hand better, but doesn't lose much of the finesse of the smaller one. Time will tell of course, but I can see myself wanting to grab for the larger of the two just due to it feeling better in my hand.

    • @nrcha

    Great video as always but one recommendation from my side: don‘t do destruction tests with a rifle anymore. The reason is that the knives often break and this is totally devaluating other peoples hard work (knifemaker). It's good to see you break an expensive knife. I've seen a lot of people debase "Chinese" D2 and heat treat or the like whenever you hit a cheap knife and it snaps. The reality is that harder and more stainless knives are just more brittle no matter where the knife is from. And that certain kinds of high impacts and stresses will break them.

    Scrapping a ferro rod...really? Ever hear of a lighter?
    Remember these are the guys who said that the average person who gets lost will be found in under 3 days.
    So they said, Why get a blade of softer steel that can be easily re-sharpened in the field, rather than a harder steel like 3v, that keeps its edge for 3 days? Cause you will be back home with your fancy sharpening tools in 3 days, so you need only survive for 3 days.
    YET they say you need a knife with a 90 degree spine to scrap a ferro rod, why?
    A lighter will last 3 days, just like your harder steel's edge, and they are much easier to use to make fire.
    So why carry a ferro-rod rather than a lighter?
    Grab a bunch of small 9'-12" sticks.
    Hold them in your hand with the ends sticking out of one end of your hand. Hold the lighter under the stick ends and wait for them to all catch fire. No tinder needed, no feather sticking needed.
    And there you are, a burning torch of sticks to start your fire.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd recommend to carry at least 3 ways of making fire she. You go out somewhere where shit might hit the fan. A lighter could be busted before you're even lost if it gets soaked.
      I'd take a lighter with me but not as the only means to make fire when I'll go hiking or whatever

    If corrosion resistance did not factor into the knife's properties... M4 would be a better steel for this design. That said... In TRC's description, it says a bunch of BS about Hemingway, hunting and fishing. However the design hype is neither optimized nor versatile suitability for any of that. It is at best given a no BS description akin to city-slicker-special and the reasoning behind steel selection for EDC use. Toughness and stability are lacking with this design using that steel selection at specified RHC. Using M4 will likely change this, provide chipping resistance, enhance withstanding of lateral breakage, and no practical lag in edge retention. I'd wager another 'test-shoot' same knife with M4 steel. Only downside of going M4 is enduring corrosion issues. Food for thoughts DBK & TRC.

    I bought a Ka-Bar wrench knife for work, but like Marten , I keep finding myself taking it as an EDC because it lacks a real handle and is so thin. I think that is what makes a good EDC knife, apparently, overall thiness and about 7.5-8" for a fixie so it slips right in a pants pocket.

    Another great vid. What do you guys think of the Mora Eldris? Sometimes I carry that instead of a folder. A review video of that would be cool.

    How about a comparison with the LionSteel M4 that you reviewed Sep 20, 2016
    ? Same steel but a different design and $100 less. Asking for a friend. :-)

    BOIS. YOU ARE IN HOLLAND, MAKING VIDEOS ABOUT KNIVES. Do you not think you could have cut slices of smoked gouda rather than used shitty pre-sliced american cheese??

    Thank you for reviewing this TRC blade. There are also the other models: K1-s, South Pole, Mille Couri, M-1XDP, Speed Demon and the Mini Tanto. Would be very cool if you can get a hold of one of them and test it. ;)

    Let me start with the superlatives:
    Production content excellent.
    Video production excellent.
    Music excellent.
    Cooking skills excellent.
    Knife destruction shooting $250 kinife, eh...not so much.
    Overall effect PRICELESS!
    Good job boys.

    First off, I always get hungry watching your videos as of late and really want to try what you make!! HAHA! Secondly, I really don't care for the rifle test. The impact you get from that pellet is way above anything you'll get in the field. I love destruction tests but This one really seems like over kill and just keeps destroying perfectly good knives for no good reason. But that's my opinion. Do what helps your channel or what makes you happy.

    hi, guys could you try and do a stress test on cudemans bowie KNOIFES, firstly maybe its because id like to buy one and i want to know if the knife is good, second of all is that they seem to be affordable bowie knives. then comes the second question, are you familiar with Molybdenum Vanadium steel, is it good iv seen that it's often compared to VG10 and seems comparable with VG10.
    BTW that hamburger looks freaking awesome

    Stupid Destruction of such a beautiful knife, there is a big amount of craftsmanship in it.
    It was obvious, that at 62 HRC and such a thin stock it would break. You FOOLS!

    Listen smart pants , I have a Wusthof knife which is 58 HRC and is difficult for me to sharpen it .A 62 HRC one would be a nightmare .You need professional tools to do it and a lot of experience and skills so , you can keep it .Yes is a great knife but is expensive , hard to sharpen and I don't need it .

    Nice video again gents! I'm thinking what would have happened if Marteen shooted at the edge, and not the blade's side. I'm confident that this blade would split the projectile in half, no problem (so if you still have a knife left...)
