Odd Jobs On My Off Grid Smallholding

- While I love to do the big projects they take up a lot of time. there are a lot of jobs that need doing that dont fit in to big project videos, so this week I just filled me catching up on some of the jobs I needed to do around the place.
Kris, You have been an inspiration to me and my 2 adult sons throughout the pandemic. when my sons found themselves unemployed back in 2020, I hired them to help me build a storage shed from the salvage left over from a remodel. We got permission from the owner of the empty lot next door to thin the forest. We borrowed a draw knife and a slick from an old man and followed your example. We honed our skills at mortise and tenon joints. We built a shed, 8 ft x 10 ft from logs, wattle and daub. We followed your example and made cordwood masonry on the lower half of the shed. It is almost done. We are applying the lime plaster now over the daub. We are using beer and wine bottles like stained glass over the doors and windows.
In the beginning, I built a pair of log saw horses like you did. But I am once again inspired by the wooden saw horses in this workshop. I am thrilled at your design, and I hope to copy it. Thanks. BTW, what type of wood did you use in the saw horses?
Those plants were horsetails- one of the oldest plant species on earth; they dominated the forests during the dinosaur era. They can actually be a real problem in gardens and allotments but do apparently have medicinal properties: good for connective tissue healing and kidney function- though I've no idea if this is actually true! And now there's another use for them - goose food!

They have mega mega long roots and like you say can be a problem for some! An absolute nightmare to get rid off.
Could be but not 100% sure.
I know them as Mares Tail. They were used on railway embankments to stabilise them many years ago. I had a front garden full and it took me over a year to dig them out..
We found fossils of them at an old open cast coal mine recently, 30 million years old, and they used to grow 20metres high back then!
'Adapt, overcome and improvise' 😁👍 you are just incredible. You see a problem, no idea how to fix it, deduce what's wrong and find your own solution. Montgomery Scott would be impressed. It is an absolute pleasure to follow this channel, to see you unphased by little inconveniences that would cost the rest of us a small fortune to fix. Where some mechanic would tear it out and replace with a new one, you make it work. FANTASTIC 👍 In awe.

What you do is so 'macho' in a way. And yet, the slow-worm is a 'beautiful little creature', and you note that it has had a wound at some time. This, and your obvious affection for your cat, and the chickens, show the other side of masculinity. Thank you, Kris, for showing what a man can be.
It's true masculinity, having the power and the knowledge but using it wisely and for good intent. It's why I never heed any of the nonsense about "Toxic Masculinity" and "White Supremacy" etc. All that stuff is just a ploy to bring what we have crashing down. Well we will not let them!
It’s all looking terrific Kris and maturing nicely. Yes the geese were feasting on Horsetail - they clearly love it! Puss looks fine, I hope Dot is well and that your very hard work and research on all things hydro electric is paying off. I’m sure it is.
Hey Kris’s, you should never look back. At the time it was worth doing and you did good. I always say should of,could of,would of but you can never tell the future,if you could we would all be happy all the time. I must say I’m not really a 🐈 person but I love the passion you have for your kitty and she is a darling little kitty. I’m so so impressed with what you have accomplished in the few years that you have been on the property,I’ve been watching from the beginning and I’m truly amazed. My wish would to be able to someday meet up with you,and living in Canada makes that all the harder.
My wife was born and raised in Yorkshire and d has roots in Ireland so you never know our paths could cross someday. Take care my friend and please take some time off to smell the rose’s. God Bess you both and give kitty a pet from me.
I just love your lifestyle.. this is how we should all be living... and the love you have for Dot and Big Girl fills my heart... just love everything about your videos...

I really enjoyed the random mix of stuff, thanks for bringing us along! On another note, I have a neck issue similar to yours, and happened upon a gonstead chiropractor who did some work on me but also pointed out some exercises and stretches I should be doing to restore mobility. It has improved to the point where when I can feel it coming on and stretch it out so it doesn't wreck my day, and happens less often than before. Just my 2 cents.

I was amazed that you were able to fully stand upright beneath the van while it was on the lift! As I watched you building the workshop roof, I thought that there was not room to do that---but you proved me wrong, excellent work well done.
I really enjoy watching how folks go about their 'everyday' stuff - sort of gives me a bit of a push to get of my backside and do the same 😊 Agree with Mathew Hawkins - that plant looks very similar to rock samphire.

Ever since you were my neighbour Kris. I have always thought I knew pretty much most things in DIY but you cease to amaze me with your intelligence and ability to overcome every problem in life. I was always impressed by what you know and am amazed at what you have achieved over the years. You are probably still suffering from that motorbike accident you had years ago and why you are having problems now. The body is a strange thing and manifests itself in strange ways. Even my dad watches your videos and is super impressed at your knowledge of everything DIY.

Hi Kris, glad to see you swinging the sythe (made my rheumatiz twinge a bit....): as a boy, i used to clear the grass around our house with one to keep the house cow from getting too close to the clothesline e.t.c.
I'm constantly learning the 'different terminology' for things that occurs in other countries; when you replaced the front & rear universal joints on your trusty Delica i was impressed by how you were unfazed by the indicator malfunction.
Things cost money--- paying someone to fix things cost money ---- so it's good to be able to D.I.Y. (I only recently found myself unable to do my car servicing & it stings when i see the receipt...).
Wind, water, solar! All the things you aimed to have are now there! Full marks!
Loved the "ducks-to-the-pond" part!
They are such characters! We had ducks (occasionally; hens (& a bossy rooster), house veggie patch etc.
You're right! They all take 'work' but they did feed us & i "get it".

It's field horsetail and it grows everywhere in my garden, too. It contains a lot of silica (~10%). I assume that's pretty useful for building feathers (like it is for building hair, bones, skin and cartilage) and maybe that's why the geese like it so much?
These little mini edits are great to watch. It's been awesome to watch you grow over the years, naturally learned experiences through trial and error and you post content that's enjoyable to watch

Great stuff Kris - sorry about your neck - I'm 73 and get all sorts of joint problems - some that just appear from nowhere... that's one of the reasons I enjoy watching you and the things you do. I especially enjoyed your "follow me to see the range of home jobs" it helps to see how much your place has changed over the years... I really loved your cat and the geese. Ian: I have accused Kris of helping build the Ark but he never confirmed one way or the other! Will keep a look see if he responds to your question. But, I am of the opinion that the answer, if he is honest with us all, would be a resounding NO!

Thank you so much for a 'maintenance' video. There are two other types of non-project videos I really enjoy: 1) touring your property a couple of times each year - with some aerial shots to see the relationship of the buildings, trees (how are they doing?) and pond to each other, now that you have a drone and 2) 'day in the life' videos seeing daily chores with the animals, garden, etc. and "checking in" on the round house.

Those vehicle repairs are exactly like those which I used to do at your age or older. You have a great eye for detail and the ability to see how things work.
You could put trolley wheels on the bottom of the toolbox bench in case you want to move the tools closer to what ever job your doing.

Hey Kris and Dot, I taught my geese how to swim by taking my kayak out into our pond. If they've imprinted on you then they will likely follow you right out, but you may need a little encouragement in the form of treats. After a few trips, the will likely start going out on their own when you walk them up. I read that they learn to swim from their parents, so if they never see y'all going out into the water they will be hesitant or unlikely to take the plunge on their own. Good Luck

I love these homestead updates!!! You amaze me with your variety of skills!!
You might need some new pillows on your bed Kris and make sure your neck is straight horizontally when you lie down. If you sleep on your side make sure the pillow is thick enough to support your head without your shoulders ending up in your ears, cos we subconsciously hunch our shoulders to support the head when we sleep then you get a pinching pain down one side when you get up in the morning.
Nice Video Kris nice to see the day to day stuff and not just the larger projects. You are so like my Dad he would have done what you did with the indicator, the amount of work we used to do on his old cars. He taught me lateral thinking and problem solving and once you have that mindset it stays and just grows with you. There are always lessons to be learnt when you do something like the clash between the toolbox and the vice. But the vice was useful and although not ideal it works and will no doubt remain until a better location offers itself.

Like the way that lots of different stuff around the homestead was covered. Lots of stuff often gets done on a farm on a day to day basis. Not many people get to see that sort of work. Thanks for taking the time Kris....

I did enjoy this video. Small projects are good too! Not many people build their own wind turbines, but then not many repair their own indicator levers and u-joints either. Good stuff.

For your neck, consider an exercise/stretch I was taught from my neck injury years ago:
Move your head as far as you can to-
Look up, then down 5x.
Look left then right 5x.
Touch your ear to your left then right shoulder 5x.
Tuck in your chin 5x.
Do this 3x a day
Go slow, don’t hurt yourself, and stretch your neck as far as you feel comfortable.
Another neck/shoulder stretch is to open your arms, elbows bent like wings, across a doorway, then lean in and stretch.
Raise your arms, then lean in and stretch again-and higher, until your arms are over your head.
I hope you feel better!

Thanks for sharing your daily chores so to speak video. We all need days like this one to get things cleaned up and looking nice. I can believe those geese would not go in that pond. Were they concerned about alligators or something very odd though. Cant wait to see the garden expand we are in the process of expanding ours next year. I have a sawmill coming in August that hopefully will keep me busy in the fall milling out timber frame beams for my sawmill shed building. Looking forward to your hydro building which I believe you did the stone portion of a few videos back.

Loving your videos Kris. I have only been watching for about a month and i find them inspiring and motivating. Since watching your videos its made me want to start new projects of my own and has made me enjoy focusing on completing projects rather than wasting money going out drinking lol. I am investing time building my own beer garden with a bar its going to look nice and for the family to enjoy. Thanks for these videos mate they really make people focus on being more productive and shows what you can archive with hard work :)

Busy week. Lovely video. Would suggest you keep your green spuds for seed potatoes to use next year. Rather than just cut the green off and use them. The solanine that is in green potatoes will be in the hole potato not just the green bit. It is the solanine that can upset your stomach as it is a toxin to humans. So best avoided. I’m sure you have already eaten them and been fine but would not advise future consumption. We don’t want you getting sick.

Really enjoyed that one Kris. I love just pottering about and getting those odd jobs done. I did think you might loose a window on the van when you fired up the flail by the workshop 🫣🫣. Those plants are rampant in my garden. They grow quickly so I'm constantly clearing them. I thought they were something only in Japan, because I never saw it back in the States. If I could pack it up and send it to your geese, I would hahaha

The whitetail plant is high in minerals and silica, the roots go down as much as 3 meters could be more, they draw those minerals up into their leaves.
In the spring the female shoots are edible but the plant also makes an incredible plant feed and is an effective fungicide against blight and some other fungus diseases. I believe they are good for finding your hair as well.

It's called field Horsetail. You can make tea or nice salat from it, for most people its pest in their garden but it's an old medicinal used plant. it's really cool, no wonder the geese are loving it.
Yay for the scythe appearance! I got myself a left-handed blade and peening jig. Also got myself covid though, so haven't picked them up yet. Nice little vid.
Its been a while since I've watched your videos I've just caught up on all of them and to see the progress you've made is amazing the last video I watched was when you finished the green house! Keep it up and love to see where your channel goes!
Things can just amaze you, I have a story for you I had one of the first Barbie dolls and a dog we had at the time shewed it’s fingers well the doll turned out to be worth thousands!
I'm intrigued by the difference in land management strategies due to the difference in climate between the UK and Australia. On our property we have to maintain a balance between habitat and vegetation growth due to the danger of bushfire. Like you we don't like clearing large areas where there is no reason to do so but we have taken great care to remove the non indigenous weeds and replace them with natives that are drought and fire tolerant. Oh how I would love a tractor to move large logs around. Because of very hilly terrain we move these large logs with winches attached to long straps and chains.
I like to see the choring videos, it gives a nice perspective on some more of the day to day of running your own place.
