I fixed The Land Rover And Then It Broke Again!

  • I have had nothing but problems with vehicles for the last few weeks. my Delica van broke down on the motorway. I got the Land Rover working right and then on its maiden voyage the clutch went. I had a feeling the clutch would not last long because I could smell it in the engine bay but I thought it would last a little while at least. I got Raf over to help and over two days we fixed it.
I also installed a new head on the Delica van but its still has some major problems. I think the engine needs to come out and have a rebuild. That might be a winter project.

That is a seriously nice Landy and you've obviously invested a lot of time, effort and money into it. Your foresight in investing in the lift and multipurpose workshop is also inspiring. Good job. Re the van, sit on it for a while and see what the universe provides. It may be worth dropping the sump and observing the bottom end.

Check the PCV system if it has one. might be clogged. If your new head came with a new valve cover makes sure it actually has a breather or PCV fitting! Compare the old head gasket with the new one, and the old head with the new head to make sure all opening line up and exist on the new head.

Without spending money and assuming worst case it is already dead, if you can spare the time drop the sump, take the head back off and bring a few pistons out - might be a ring/piston problem although the good compressions make that less likely. Whatever you do - don't give up until you can see the cause of the problem - you can do it !

Your efforts are compounding, the repairing of the LandRover in your new workshop would not have previously been possible without your foresight and effort. It looks to be serendipitous, that this happened now, but it's an earned opportunity that you were able to capitalize on because of your previous efforts and vision. it's super rewarding to see you materialize this progress.

I love your video's Kris. You live the life I wish I did, but as a 60 year old I may have missed my bus. I have always been a trouble shooter, and in my younger days it was all ice engines (now its computers), so I REALLY felt your elation when you had the timing issue fixed (I had a similar issue in the early 1980s with a Datsun 180B timing chain, but once I worked out what was wrong, the feeling of winning was super), so I truly congratulate you, you not only see that there is an issue, you then feel it, and then use logic to find the answer. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw you find and then fix the timing issue. Well done and congratulations, keep up the great videos, I'm excited about your hydroelectric setups.😄

I recommend changing the winch wire for a synthetic rope for safety and handling. I have a lot of winching experience as an off roader I have seen both fail. Steel wire will whip dangerously when it fails but synthetic rope will just drop to the ground. Synthetic rope is far easier to handle and it is stronger at the same diameter so if you go narrower and you can gain reach. Finally it can be easily field spliced if necessary.

The big 'issue' with running on veg oil is that it cleans all the crap. When I went over to veg oil on the T4, doing nothing more than simply using veg oil rather than diesel, the main issue was th filter clogging up quickly, which, to change on a T4 is a pain , so I simply added some cheap replaceable inline filters and all I did was filter waste oil through a j-cloth and as winters are harsh here, I would add a half a litre of white spirit to stop the oil gelling.

  • @jamesward5721

The clutch release bearings in these are weak - as are the clutch release arms - they will wear & then start melting the plastic (on the back of the bearing) with the heat generated which is the stank you usually smell. They do a stronger release arm & it's well worth going for when you replace the clutch/bearing.
    Great catch on the timing.

Go onto a good Landrover forum, there will be plenty of professional and diy mechanics that can help you with information and what to look out for. You should drop a dial indicator probe into a cylinder to find TDC unless you have a mark on the flywheel or other. Marks on the chain don’t mean much unless you can line it up with other locations.

Drove a Landi in Tanzania and Kenya for eight years. Cannot beat teh. The sound alone does things to my heart.

I love the sound of it, the turbo spooling is music to my ears.

    Hello Kris,
I am pleased to see the Land Rover is up and running, well done... Shame about the Delica van as it would be great to have a spare vehicle for your hydro business.
    Take care.

Another great video. I’m surprised that you haven’t installed locking/unlocking hubs on the front axle. It would save a lot of wear & tear on the front axle shafts and improve fuel economy.

Nice rig you got here! Glad your sorted out the timing. It's seems odd that bottom end is damaged, could it be just wear out crank seals due to overheating ? A leak down test could be helpful. Cheers
