I am from Atlanta, GA like Joe (Rest In Song dear Joe!!). I was 14 when that song was a hit! Truly an amazing person, Joe took "The Atlanta Sound" to a respected level!!! His songs meant a lot to me as a geeky kid that other kids made fun of! I met him when I was 15 and he treated me nice and with respect!!! One of my heroes! Thank you for playing his songs!!!
Not just a great song writer , that him on the intro to Aretha Franklins “Chain of Fools” and being from South Atlanta my self he makes me proud to be home folks
Joe was a much in-demand session guitarist in the '60s. He played bass on Dylan's Blonde On Blonde album, guitar on Simon & Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence album, and, most famously, played the lead guitar lines on Aretha's "Chain of Fools." He wrote hits for Billy Joe Royal (Down in the Boondocks), Deep Purple (Hush), Lynn Anderson (Rose Garden) and others. Thanks Phil and Harri.
OMG Harri you're bringing it all back to me now!!! Games People Play-another huge song by this guy! I really never appreciated this guy fully until this show-thank you Harri and uncle Phil!!!
Joe South in this song reminds me so much of John Fogerty. Someone please remind me to listen to these lyrics while looking into a mirror; for full effect ... Great job Phil n Harri.
Wow uncle Phil and Harri-you guys have sure landed a jewel here! Haven't heard this song since I was a young teenager in the early '70's when my mother was bringing in all of these great albums and records! This is indeed a memorable one-has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard! Thank you two so much for making this show happen!!!
AMEN!! I was 15 in Atlanta when it became a hit! Joe South was (Rest In Song Joe) so nice to me when I would show up at his local gigs! An amazing soul. I am glad we have his works recorded!!
Thanks for the reaction. Joe South was a singer/songwriter that has been forgotten by many. His life was derailed by drugs after a family member died. He added electric guitar to “The Sound of Silence” by the producer’s request after it was released because it was floundering on the charts and needed something to make it a hit. He also played guitar for Aretha Franklin “Chain of Fools.” Check out his catalog and enjoy his music.!
Haven't heard this song in ages. I was 7 when this came out and I clearly remember the main chorus line...never listened to the rest of the words. Great song...thanks for bringing it back! Your friends from northeast Florida
Superb Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist who wrote a number of hits for others as well as for himself. Elvis covered his music on stage. Check out Joe's gorgeously sentimental "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home" from 1969.
the most beautiful thing about music in the 60s and 70s, was the songs that had truly important messages.... add to this song, "he ain't heavy, he's my brother," "inner city blues," "war," "imagine...."
"Down in the Boondocks" is a song written by Joe South, and first recorded by American artist Billy Joe Royal as his debut single. It was a hit in 1965, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the UK, it hit No. 38 on the Record Retailer chart.
Who can see a band like the Hollywood vampires and Johnny Depp with his cool and beautiful singing voice ..cover this it would be just as good as Joe South's..or someone like josh turner or Randy owens from Alabama cover it 😊
Joe South, Tommy Roe and Billy Joe Royal were all from Atlanta, and appeared together on The Ed Sullivan show. He worked with Jerry Reed and Ray Stevens early in his career, aside from all the songs he wrote and performed, which I'm pretty sure others have mentioned. A very talented, underappreciated guy.
well i just have to post this famous inspirational quote: "“Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you'll be a mile from them, and you'll have their shoes” ― Jack Handy
I always liked this song. I believe I first heard it in 1970 when I was only 10 years old. Later in 1970 Elvis did a great cover of it when he was in Las Vegas. I also like Joe South's song "Games People Play".
I was just thinking of asking, Harri how are we gonna ever save this world?, then you stopped the music and said, maybe if we print the lyrics and put them on the door... Appreciate ya Brotherman
Great song, Games People Play by Freddy Weller formerly of Paul Revere and the Raiders is a good one also from around the time this was out, please react, great reaction
God I forgot about this one. The message should be spread far and wide in today's turbulent times. It's realizing we are all the same and should be treated the same. Don't we all bleed red?
It took me a moment to recollect where I knew this song from, but it was Bryan Ferry who did an excellent version of it on his Another Time, Another Place album back in the seventies.
Wish I could connect with Nico and Vinz and ask them to cover this song. They've done other covers; the spiritual message fits with their vibe really well. But you'd be hard pressed to beat this original, no matter who you are. This song has soul. Really deep soul.
good one harri, also dont miss "dont it make you want to go home" you won't believe he has another one near as good as this one...Dan Maines, Washington state.

Ray Stevens (The Streak, Games People Play, etc.) also recorded this song and released it in 1970, one year after Joe South.
I was good friends with Jan and Joe both. They were good people. I sure do miss them.

We could use more songs like this now days.
This song rung true then, and it rings true NOW! Thanks!❤❤
Joe South is one of the most underrated singer songwriter ever. So many hit songs he wrote.

All God's children get weary when they roam.
Great request! What a great song. Wonderful reaction Harri!
Joe certainly had his spirituality down tight at a young age. Love it.
And you’re right Harri, this kind of song brings people together.
the most beautiful thing about music in the 60s and 70s, was the songs that had truly important messages.... add to this song, "he ain't heavy, he's my brother," "inner city blues," "war," "imagine...."

This is good, but I much prefer Elvis's version. You should check it out!😀
I still have this 45. It will always be relative, no matter how old it gets.

Good morning I love your channel you have a great energy all my best 😊❤❤❤
As a child, I was told that the native peoples said to say " walk a mile in another man's moccasins before
you criticize him."

Thanks Harri and Phil. Just another suggestion for Joe South would be 'Children' - absolute gem. Cheers ✌

🎶🎶🎶 I was probably 14 the last time I heard this song - and I still remember it. Musical memory is amazing. 🎶🎶🎶
Geez been a while. Going to learn this one again. Thanks Harri.
Never seen that video. Always like me some Joe South tunes.
Elvis had a great version of this song. You can find the long version on Elvis on stage album.
I was just thinking of asking, Harri how are we gonna ever save this world?, then you stopped the music and said, maybe if we print the lyrics and put them on the door... Appreciate ya Brotherman

On the line of Games People Play
Joe South was a seriously great song writer. Checkout his song “Gabriel”.
South Atlanta home boy so much more than just a few songs the intro to Aretha s chain of fools is him
Joe South was the Best!
Great song and so true. BTW, another Macca song you will like is Beautiful Night, I'd love to hear you cover that too. Listen for Ringo at the end.
this was one of elvis biggest songs, infact the album walk a mile in my shoes
Even "The King" covered this one.
It also has a killer groove!
Wish I could connect with Nico and Vinz and ask them to cover this song. They've done other covers; the spiritual message fits with their vibe really well. But you'd be hard pressed to beat this original, no matter who you are. This song has soul. Really deep soul.

You should react to Judy Collins - Send in the Clowns.
There is only one true Bible and it's the Holy Bible , which is the word of God. Just saying. Love your reactions Harri!!!
Elvis presley also sang this live
