I’ve had a lot of experience with Dell and after watching these, I’m convinced Dell has become rich because they cut corners everywhere they can even at the expense of the customer. Charging for a goddamn sticker on the computer?
Dell has always been this way... they get corporate enterprise accounts and make their profit there easily. No need to make good consumer level products anymore outside of laptops.
They didn’t bill the sticker, their invoices just list everything. If you pull the list for a Dell server it’ll be 80+ items.
I think Linus would be pissed about getting charged for a sticker. But he didn't, cuz it's a line item. Only exists for the bill sheet and inventory. Not actually charged
That's exactly how Dell got rich, ironically they started as a company who cut corners to make PCs more affordable, the problem comes when didn't stop cutting corners while still having a premium price
They don't charge for it, they just put it on the Bill of Materials to make sure you get the right sticker on the right machine.
Pro tip for the omen, that top panel can come off with a couple screws for a massive airflow improvement with no difference to anything else
Another thing with the omen: There's 4 panels in that top panel that'll pop out with some pressure, and 4 screw holes for a 120mm fan to mount to the system.

By the time of the third season Dell will completely stop selling PCs and focus solely on financial services and antivirus distribution. Mark my words.
Dell will actually TRY to cut more corners, flex on LTT just because they can and just don't care.

I've got that cyberpower case and it's pretty great with regard to airflow. I use the 3 included led fans for exhaust on the rear and in the top two rear spots. Mounted 3 corsair fans to the other side of that grill where there is very little gap between the fan and the side pane for more direct intake. NH-U14S instead of aoi.

Having spent money on an HP Omen, then ripped it apart and upgraded everything but the mobo and CPU...can confirm, very happy with it as a gateway drug to the PCMR
On the Cyber-power pc I bought 2 years ago it was about the same configuration. Ended up re configuring those side panel fans to pull air in, and added a fan for exhaust on top near the back with an intake coming in the front behind that panel, fixed my thermals.

@@billsoon8456 lol, having a credit card doesn't mean that you're or you will be in debt. As long as you keep up with paying it off regularly, you'll be fine.
In fact, any adult needs a credit card these days. Otherwise how can you preform a credit check if you wanted to buy a house for example? (unless you're a millionaire who can afford big purchases like this). Having a credit card, and using it responsibly, means that you can show that you're organised, diligent and trustworthy - you pay it off on time and can budget successfully.
Also, having a credit card is useful for when you shop, as it's an extra protection layer given by your bank (something you don't get with debit cards). So if you wanted to return something you bought at the shop but the shop doesn't deliver it or accept a return etc, or if you were scammed, it's a lot easier to dispute a transaction and the bank resolves the matter a lot more quickly. You also don't loose your own money out of your bank account, so it can't be drained by scammers etc.

Actually pretty happy to see the combo jack - don't know if it's just me, when my earbuds' microphone was just not able to work with my MSI case, that was frustrating! Will always have the rear IO for a proper setup and the cables are usually super long.

took apart in 2014 Dell systems with that same connector layout
As soon as I saw it, I thought "That looks like a cheaper low-end model server power supply, or maybe like one of those dedicated 12v ones we saw show up a few years back for crypto-mining rigs?" (I've used those to power LED lighting systems more than once, haha) Then Linus confirms it's a 12v only PS and... 80+ platinum on a 12v server power supply is... not very good. Don't even waste your time on anything under at LEAST 90+, if not 95+ or even 98+ at that point, as the cost difference on 12v supplies, unlike traditional multi-voltage ATX supplies, is a much smaller increase that is more than affordable once you're already in that price range and basing cost on %. It is nice to see that finally becoming a standard, though.
Edit: To clarify what I meant by that price range: 12v power supplies are cheap. REALLY cheap when compared to the traditional ATX ones. Need a nice top end 95+ rated 1200w power supply? How does $114 sound brand new? Sure, you could get the 80+ one for $100, but at that point you're not being efficient on just the added power cost alone over a few years.
Also... Platinum 80+? I've never seen that. Gold 80+ sure, but platinum I've always seen listed only on 85+ supplies...
If you watch close enough where Linus throws the Ram you can see it was actually the Ram that was trying to get away from Linus.

Cyberpower usually used a Vacuum Draw for cooling. all fans push and the PC draws in from the Bottom filter. Actually works pretty well, my sons running the same PC as the one they ordered and it has great thermals

12 days! Back in 2007 I ordered a.new HP laptop on Christmas Eve. It shipped from China and I got it December 26. I've had the same insane shipping from Japanese ebay sellers. Order Wednesday morning and get the item Friday.
I love that a couple of them included installation CDs, yet don't have a single 5 and a quarter inch bay on the case.

Many years ago, we had a small computer shop here, where you basicly ordered from a PC partpicker style site, and then a week later you got to pickup your built system for the price the site gave you for the parts.
Basicly the income was whatever rebate ha managed to get ordering the parts, and for that, he built it too.
He even had a small bench where you could sit and test the computer, and always a free coffe too.
He was also keen on getting people to try out Linux, so whatever flavour you wanted, he made you a CD for free.
Good old days, he sold his buisness and moved, and the new owner run it to the ground.
I'd assume with that the new owner looked at revenue and their eyes bulged, then they tried to run it like a business. Sounds like that guy had a real passion for it, he wasn't making much money but loved doing it. Always a shame when you lose those sort of things, like all the little local hardware and fishing stores. Always full of people that love their craft and will chat for hours.

I worked for a small store like that back in the day. Margins used to be good enough to buy components and build every machine, but prices and labor costs made that impossible by the mid-90s. We generally had pre-built machines available from a local OEM and only did custom/boutique builds by request and for extra cost. Our "value add" over going to CompUSA or Best Buy was that every new machine was tested before delivery (you'd be amazed at how many defective machines showed up) and we took care of migration from a customer's old computer. If the customer purchased any peripherals with the system (printers, etc), we would set them up and test them as well.
@@NJRoadfan Yeah, he had no labour cost except for his own, and he probably valued being his own boss higher then a high salary, although he did make enough to drive nice cars and buy a house (the house he had the store in) before selling and moving.
I met him years later and he was an employee on a big chain store, he didn't seem happy...

As a customer service/support rep, I would be VERY interested to see the manufacturer's responses to seeing all of this. Like I'd legit like to see reaction videos of them watching their own segments and trying to defend all of the things these guys pick apart. I think it would be fantastic.

Interesting to compare to my pre-built Lenovo, the cardbord was super thick as well as the foam, very thick and dense. Your vid makes me wanna open up the computer and inspect it, but I will have to rely on the paper specs. And it suppose to have a fan and intake in the back and intake and a fan i the front, wich seems so be good, judging from this vid. I think I made a good choice with it and I works better and quiter than I thought it would. Thanks for your entertaining and informative vids!
I've seen the CyberPower warehouse here in socal, and those computers are stacked, on pallets, on top of each other, about 8 pallets tall. They really don't seem to care about shipping damage whatsoever.
Also, I had a computer repair with one of their units shipped with a case just like that, with an RX580. CPU and GPU thermal throttled during gaming. turned those side fans around and brought temps down a bit.

I had an Omen really similar to the one you guys got in this video, the GPU brace gave me so much trouble when I tried to take it apart to upgrade. It was screwed to the motherboard with the tiniest little screws that stripped just the instant you put a tool to them... My friends called me nuts but I took a driver drill to them and that was the only way I managed to get the brace off.
My friend works for HP and was involved in revamping the customer support process. She is so excited to see how well they've done! Thank you Linus for making her day multiple times now by doing this.

@@keaganmckay8229 HP was the one working from home with the chickens. Not a perfect experience but the customer thought the chickens were hilarious so still a good thing. So I must disagree with them being horrible.

perfect example of someone in engineering recommanding "we need plastic stickers" and then someone in purchasing going "but paper ones are $0.03 less per 1,000"
These shitty stickers should be illegal, the suck balls.
paper stickers are the way to go to cut the plastic waste - the glue was the issue here.
Our company is selling accessories for hair and body. Lately they had the idea to bring out big plastic panels to advertise our products better. Not a bad idea.
However, they took some photo they already had and pasted a hair clip with paint on it. We are the biggest company in the country and we do such a thing.

My mother used to work for cyberpower, and we'd go to the christmas parties every year. The owners of cyberpower and ibuypower are actually very good friends, so they could very well have gathered some good "inspiration" fron each other.

Oh... That I/O sticker hurt. I was coming into this expecting to trash talk the Dell but that sticker was my least favorite part of this.
I know right, I normally just include a quick start guide with like 3-4 steps, photos of the actual machine they ordered and arrows pointing to where you plug things in.
Recently though I did a house call for a 9 month old machine with "fans turn on but no display at all anymore". Tried remote tech support first but silly me being used to highly complex problems, forgot to ask the most basic ones first. He had tried different HDMI cables, swapped monitor with his housemate, I even walked him through a CMOS clear just in case it was a booting issue or OC instability, but not wanting to leave him without the ability to game over the weekend I decided to pack some spare parts for testing and head over.
Before I even dropped my bag of spares on the floor I saw the HDMI cable poking out the top half of the case... the motherboard port, on a Ryzen system with no iGPU
We had a good laugh about it afterward, but it did remind me that I should step up my "user friendliness game".
So now I'm thinking of printing out some low tack vinyl stickers (NOT paper, and like 10 cents added cost per machine, oh no :P) to more easily highlight packing materials which need removing, where to plug things in, and maybe a small one that totally blocks motherboard video out if the CPU doesn't support it.. still easily removable if they want to of course, but which can be left on without blocking any other ports.
But they saved almost an 1/8th of a cent buying those cheaper stickers!! :D
@@_Piers_ If these decisions were down to cost rather than just stupidity, you would think they could ask the customer "Do you want a complimentary basic keyboard and mouse?". Even if only 10% of responders say no it would save more than the cost of switching to vinyl stickers.
I mean, the boutique builders have nicer everything.. more powerful parts, better quality cases, better cooling, and they still make enough profit. With lower sales numbers too.
I don't want to believe they'd do something so stupid in the interest of cost savings.

The company I work for is pretty big and has different locations all over the city. I was located in the PC building (and ordering) location for some weeks. We literally "shipped" 1200€ PCs in the way of putting them on cheap and old transport trolleys and rolling them around the streets till we arrived at the destination. If anything wasn't as ordered, we put the PC back in the bux and pulled it back to the office where we fixed and and pulled it back.
It may have recently become an official standard to be used, but Dell has been using those proprietary PSUs in their business PCs for some time now. A part of my job involves refurbishing old PCs. And, OptiPlex machines dating back to the Core2 era tend to use these weird, proprietary connectors for basically anything they can get away with. Even going as far as fans. In fact, I have three OptiPlex 780ies that I've made work in every way....outside of waiting for more defunct machines like to come through for me to take their intake fans from.

I would think you would want a filter on the top exhaust vent to prevent dust from falling into the PC when it's off.

FYI: afaik this isn't DELL using the "new" 12V power supply standard, but DELL just using their proprietary own 12V standard they've been using for years.
For example the Dell Poweredge T20 also only uses 12V from the power supply and that came out Q1 2014 afaik.
I thought it was a redundant module from an industrial PSU.
On the hp omen, an exhaust fan can be added to the top. 120mm. plugged into the liquid cooler header on the motherboard. The top bracket has four rectangle sections that pop out and a fan can be mounted to this. Also used for a single aio.
15:18 well, dust tends to collect on top of things, so there'll probably be less of it falling into the PC when it's idle.
