In this video we learn how to create a realistic flag waving effect inside of After Effects! This effect is easier than you think. After Effects has an effect called 'displacement map' that can help you achieve this effect in a fast and realistic way. Through this process we're going to be going over setting up a new after effects composition, creating a displacement map, and adjusting the map to give a desired effect. So let's dive into After Effects and learn how to get this effect!

Word to the wise: If your are going to do a tutorial, best thing to do is to offer all elements required for the tutorial at no charge. That way learners can do what they came to do...learn. You can then bait and switch them into buying your product. Otherwise, I'd highly suggest leading with "This is a paid lesson" so that people aren't turned off by you before they can even become interested in what you offer.

For a waving flag I attempted a method by automating a single Photoshop action to do a displacement map to the image, except it does it to any frame. So I just export the background composition to JPEGS and run the action, and VOILA. I thought it gave a very nice realistic look. Do you know if by doing one method over the other (yours, using only AE) that the end result is significantly different, or does this approach match a photo displacement map very closely?

Thats a very interesting question. We've actually never tried your method but it sounds like the result is very similar. I imagine without having tried it yet that the results would be slightly different. We are very interested to see though, we might check this out. Also interested if this takes more or less time.
