If I was in that movie (and no signs of any death wishes), I would carefully treat Billy as if he's real while handing him to his "mother". In fact, I would even do the same for Brahms... I'll be like, "Okay, I'm just going to follow the rules so I won't die."
Something interesting about this considering we don’t get to know for sure if Billy was alive or not, is looking at Mary herself in this scene. Even if we believe that a ventriloquist could definitely speak at the same time as her figure like this, she does sound actually a little distressed the more she argues with him. Could be acting of course but still, and then when the audience starts clapping, look at her face and the way her eyes dart around for a moment. It’s like she’s a little shaken by the moment and is taking in the fact the audience thinks it’s part of the act before composing herself. I feel like regardless of what the writers have confirmed or denied outside of the movie, if we leave it up to interpretation that would be a point in my book towards Billy being alive or possessed. To me it makes sense that her line afterwards was a sort of warning like “How dare you make me almost expose my secret”. Of course there’s good evidence supporting the other way around too and both theories make sense/are very interesting.

I know this is an old comment but had to answer. As far as I’ve seen, nope. You’d have to have some extreme skills to be able to produce two different tones of voice at the same time let alone being able to make them work at different speeds and have your mouth form two sets of words at the same time. Most really good ventriloquists just get excellent at switching their voice SO quickly that it gets as close as possible to sounding like an overlapping conversation

I imagine that Billy was a bit like Pinocchio. Until that kid made him feel less like a real life thing and a puppet. So he turned into a more dapper Chucky. Movies must have great atmospheres and they truly accomplished that here. Which is also why I loved it.
