This city was filled with many beautiful old churches that are being lost. Very sad to see my hometown burn😢

Your description tells the story. I wondered about the tactics of how the fire was being fought. The Pennsylvania folks or of us in Maryland are usually pretty on the ball. But considering the fact that the structure was not being used, I can understand the use of minimum resources. Smart choice, especially if there had been another fire in an occupied building somewhere. The footage at 14:50 was also a good use of scale with the FFs next to the big walls of the church and the surrounding foliage. Great perspective! And yes, at least 2 hydrants away! LOL (Been there).

Great job covering this fire Frank. The firefighters were at their best as they fought this massive beast. Many thanks to all of them. So sad to see a part of history burned to the ground. As a Pastor it breaks my heart, even if the church is not being used as a house of worship at the moment. Stay safe, and yes, good idea to park further away. lol

You could have a dozen deck guns and ladder trucks and the fire would just look at you and say "Yeah whatever". Amazing devastation.

I was thinking about that. Too bad that it was not being used, but very historic. I really hate when we loose such a big piece of history.

Once these old structures get going with a deep-seated embedded fire it is almost impossible to extinguish. Nothing these firefighters did wrong these fires are just difficult to manage -- especially with the water volume necessary to even control spread -- tremendous radiant heat too! Glad all firefighters were safe on this fire!

Totally agree. It looks tough on the outside with all the stone fascia and whatnot. But on the inside, you've got 200+ year old wood. That's a campfire waiting to happen. Definitely one to stand away from.

This is or was one of the last remaining beautiful churches around....Although not in service.
The Third Presbyterian Church was built as a memorial to commemorate the reunion of the Old and New School Churches.[6] It was originally located on the southwest corner of Twelfth and Upland Streets. The lot was purchased in 1871 and a brick building was erected as a mission Sunday school of the now defunct First Presbyterian Church.[7] A division in the congregation occurred and 42 members broke off from the First Presbyterian Church and formed the Third Presbyterian Church on October 16, 1872. In July 1873, the western end of the church was removed, twenty-five feet added in length and a recess pulpit added.[8]
Dr. Abraham L. Latham, the minister of the Third Presbyterian Church, was concerned about declining church enrollment numbers and the lethargy of the congregation. He designed the first bible summer school with a five-week program for four hours each day for young people on summer vacation. The first school opened in 1912.[9] At its peak, approximately 650 to 700 students participated in the summer bible school.[10]
Mel Trotter, the American fundamentalism leader, held a two-week church campaign at the Third Presbyterian Church in the 1920s which resulted in 400 conversions.[11]
The congregation peaked in the middle of the 20th century but began to decline as Chester experienced economic and demographic shifts in the 1970s and 1980s. The Third Presbyterian Church was unable to survive this difficult period and closed their doors in 1986.[12]
The Chester Eastside Ministries, a social service organization affiliated with the Presbytery of Philadelphia occupied the building next until 2013 when the building was found structurally unsound and too expensive to maintain. The Chester Eastside Ministries organization moved to St. Paul's Church across the street. A permit was submitted to the city for demolition, however the Chester Historical Preservation Committee intervened and in 2015 purchased the building for $1. The committee hoped to rent the Sunday school rooms as office space and use the sanctuary as a theater.[13]
The Chester Historical Preservation Committee worked with Partners for Sacred Places, the national, non-sectarian, non-profit organization whose mission is to support older and historic sacred places, to restore the Third Presbyterian Church.[12]

I could care less about the modern suburban "shoebox" type constructed places of worship going up, because they can always be rebuilt in less than six months - But a grand old neo-Gothic structure? That's something entirely different! According to the descriptive however, this building was no longer being used as a church and was vacant at the time... Probably squatters or vandals started this one... Sad!
