  • The Aqua Sphere Alpha Fins are some of the best triathlon swim fins available today. These swim training fins are made of EVA Foam so they're much lighter than fins like the TYR Crossblade fins and they're buoyant.

    Well, the Aqua fins, the biggest difference with them compared to the others is that they more closely resemble our human shaped feet, which are 3 dimensional rather than flat like frogs or ducks. Ideal foot position for the flutter kick and dolphin kick is being pigeon toed, some where between about 20 to 40 degrees. This allows you to use the whole side of your feet which generates a lot more efficient. The holes are in them because if they are not there, you get a vacuum seal on your foot and that makes them even more difficult to get off and on. Main problem I had with them is that I could not get my feet into them. I went to the next size up, and had the same problem. I cut out about 1 1/2 inches in the foot cup, and still had big problems getting my feet into them. I also think they are made up side down. The ribs on the bottom of the fins are what the water flow pattern is like if you are swimming slightly pigeon toed. I prefer the Positive Drive fins from Finis. I believe Arena also makes a slightly off set fin, but don't have them yet.
    Side note, you have really bad foot position in your kicking, which to me is 'runner's foot'. I see this in the pool a lot. Your ankles are bent to about 30+ degrees on the down kick. This actually creates more drag than propulsion. Just sitting on the floor, or I like to do this with butt close to the wall, and legs pointing up, and slightly spread, do a gymnastic toe point. Then turn your toes in tin that 20 to 40 degree range and see what happens. When swimming, it does not hurt to have a separation between your feet, unless you are going wider than your hips. Drag increase is minimal to non existent. If your foot is bent down that much while swimming, that is like dragging a 8 or so inch diameter parachute behind you as you swim. Having pointed toes is a huge drag reducer.
    Another note, sprinters use a 6 beat kick, distance swimmers use a 2 beat kick. With the 6 beat kick, the #1 kick is the power kick, with 2 and 3 being weaker, but still contributing to propulsion. This is do to linking with the body rotation. With a 2 beat kick, the same thing applies, with that kick being the power kick. This basically means that it takes less power output to generate thrust with that kick than it does with the other 2 kicks in the 6 beat kick. This is kind of a reflex action if you don't pay attention and just let it happen.

    Thanks for a very good video. I liked you said about how the fins help you feel what good kicking feels like but how you also shouldn't just rely on the fins to do the work if you want to improve your kicking.

    What is the difference between these and the MP Alpha Pro Swim Fins? Are they a different size? Or, just a name added to the product and a different color.

    Hi what your feet size, from your video I saw you get the S size which is US 6-8 (EU 39-41). Just would like to know so that I have a referent point to what should I be getting.
    My feet is EU 41 right on the edge of size S and size M, should i get the bigger size M instead?
    Thank you for the fantastic review.

    Solid video. I'd like to see more gear reviews like this. When i bike, i attach a bluetooth speaker into one of my water bottle cages instead of headphones for safety, but any more cool reviews would be awesome. I'm always looking to improve my training gear, either for effectiveness, or fun, or comfort.

      Which of the DMC fins would you recommend?

    • @gibbethoskins8621
      @gibbethoskins8621 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keithtse6834 For the pool the Elite Max seems like the best but there are some good description vids on youtube from the company going into details on different models. I have the Repellor model as I mainly body surf and they are better than any fins I've ever used, because they are so soft you can kick with more speed and i find that gives way more propulsion and a more natural fluid kick feel compared to stiffer fins. The edge of the fin kinda flexes out like a squid when you kick which feel awesone. Michael Phelps uses them.

    If kicking only contributes 0 to 4% of propulsion for a triathlete, then why bother with fins and/or any type of kick training?

    • @nolanvini
      @nolanvini 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because a good kick is essential to a good body position, you never know when you might need to kick in a race, it is great for cardiovascular conditioning and leads to a better all round swimmer.

      I was quite interested in this as it seemed counterintuitive, but a quick scan of the literature suggests 15-30% in crawl stroke.

      @@jamesbuckle6077 yeah...maybe for elite swimmers with ultimate ankle flexibility. For lousy age groupers that are here watching and learning from TT, nowhere near that...nor should it be if you are actually a triathlete!
